Merging the worlds of fashion, art, real estate and philanthropy, Mann About Town delivers cutting-edge lifestyle content to New York and beyond.
Photo courtesy of Hotel JoaquinHi all and welcome to our double issue of Mann About Town.
As we roll into summer, events are in full force and as always, we look forward to attending and showcasing them. In this issue, we have the 10th annual Sam Waxman luncheon that took place in New York City. We are big supporters of the foundation as I attend all the events. The foundation and Mann About Town are both affiliated with Mount Sinai, which is very near and dear to my heart. We look forward to being the sponsor at the 20th Annual Hamptons Happening event.
Speaking of sponsors, we are also sponsoring the upcoming Delivering Good event taking place on June 5th. Delivering Good is an organization in the fashion industry that brings goods to individuals in need to countries all over. I have been involved with this organization for many years with friends Allan Ellinger and Marc Heller. I am also very close to the new President, Matthew Fasciano and wish him the best with his new endeavor.
Quickly coming up is our 30th anniversary of our Mann Charitable Foundation Golf Outing. This year, we are honoring Marc Grossman and Jamie Litvack. Mann Charitable Foundation donates to Alzheimer research, geriatric diseases, Crohn’s and colitis, breast cancer and liver diseases as well as to lymphoma and macular degeneration. I am also involved in many other charities outside the foundation and will continue to do so. We look forward to seeing everyone at the outing this year.
A big thank you to Liza Anderson and her team at Anderson Group Public Relations for the work they do. We worked with them for our cover on Glynn Turman this month and it’s a very interesting story. With Western film and TV on the rise, his acting career and hobbies fit right into the theme.
In our Philanthropy section this month, we showcase the Mark Schonwetter Holocaust Educational Foundation. The foundation provides Holocaust learning materials to school programs and we are honored to feature it this month.
We have magazines all over Southampton this summer with back to back events. We are currently in the process of putting together a party this year and we are excited to see everyone there.
“We are not put here on earth to play around. There is work to be done. There are responsibilities to be met. Humanity needs the abilities of every man and woman.”

Since 1976, SWCRF has invested more than $120 million towards collaborative, cross-institutional research, supporting more than 200 investigators around the world.
The SWCRF philosophy of collaboration has led to breakthrough discoveries such as a treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), developed in collaboration with researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Hematology that improved the survival rate to 95% (APL had an 80% fatality rate). Most recently, research funded by SWCRF led to an FDA approved medication shown to reduce lung cancer tumors by up to 50% by targeting the KRAS protein, helped develop an innovative two-drug therapy to better treat brain tumors which are often difficult to target, and studies exploring how aging impacts the spread of ovarian cancer in older patients. Several other studies are in clinical trials.

The Luisa Diaz Foundation celebrated a milestone 10th anniversary black tie MAG gala at The Plaza Hotel. The annual event this year honored a decade of changing lives in communities across America with 2024 focusing on two organizations - Safe Passage Heals and Sanctuary for Families. It was a grand “Celebration of Kindness” attended by important international changemakers from across the globe and underpins the organization’s motto that “kindness is cool.”
The survivors surprised Luisa with a proclamation from the New York State Senate recognizing the work she is doing with survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking as well as living up to her overarching theme of “Kindness is Cool” by proclaiming May 15th “Luisa Diaz Day.”
Last year Mayor Adams proclaimed May 18th (the date of the gala) as “Kindness is Cool Day” in NYC forevermore.
An all-star lineup of presenters and performers dedicated the night to honorees and the organizations that are collectively shinning a light on the dangers of human trafficking and sharing support for the fight to help domestic violence survivors. The subjects are often not focused on,
and this event hopes to spread much-needed awareness.
The night started with an introduction from special host Consuelo Vanderbilt, the Runway of Hope show featured the survivors as the focal point of the evening. Pamela Morgan, star of her one-woman Broadway show sang and after dinner the celebrations were put into high gear by singer and DJ Chloe Jane. Eyewitness News Kristin N. Thorne introduced the charities that were beneficiaries of this year’s Gala.

But we didn’t want to ‘shrink and pink’ our existing products; we wanted to create something authentic and considered. This is why we dedicated additional resources to bringing on designers with extensive expertise in women’s apparel to create items that are both fashionable and functional, and equally at home on the street or in the clubhouse. We have had our eye on entering the women’s category for a long time, and we are thrilled to bring this to life in our fi rst collection,” said Olajuwon Ajanaku, Eastside Golf co-founder and creative director.

“Suff s” at The Music Box Theatre is a history piece set to music. Based on the suff ragettes in the early 1900s, the musical fi rst opened at The Public and it is written and starred by Shaina Taub as Alice Paul. In fi rst seeing Taub on stage she reminded me of Lila Taylor as Valerie Solanas in “I Shot Andy Warhol” Gruff and ruff around the edges, she spares no prisoners in trying to get woman to vote. Going against the grain of the older, more genteel ladies, Paul is bare knuckles to the point where she ends up in jail.
The musical for the most part is enjoyable with a few exceptions. The show is a bit preachy, condescending at times. The staging is a whole lot better than when it played at The Public; cheap steps are replaced by mahogany paneling. Riccardo Hernandez did a brilliant job staging this big musical. Paul Tazewell’s costumes are fi rst rate and Lap Chi Chu supported the show with some deft glam lighting. Director Leigh Silverman has some good moments and some that are not so good. The plot goes from sensational to slow all throughout the two hours and 15 minutes. The all-woman cast goes at a sprinters pace from start to fi nish, leaving the audience wondering when it will level off. Taub never has us happy for the woman, rather she has them off starting the ERA right after they have been granted the right to vote.
Combining health and luxury, Equinox has been nicknamed “the fittest hotel on Earth.” From its beautifully-designed rooms and facilities to its dynamic Rooftop Terrace restaurant and fitness center and spa, Equinox Hotels was created for those who rest and play as hard as they work. equinox-hotels.com/nyc
This part of the show is confusing because why not end the performance after the 19th Amendment has been passed? It weakens the plot by having the woman not satisfied with this huge victory, it comes off as thankless.
As some songs are resonant “Let Mother Vote,” “The March” (strong), “Show Them Who You Are,” “The Young Are at The Gates” and “Finish the Fight,” others are weak and fall fl at. The choreography by Mayte Natalio is never that noticeable; more bland than anything, we are never awed by the dancing here.
As an all-woman cast both Grace McLean as Woodrow Wilson and Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone are never believable as men. As a period piece (Hamilton comes to mind), Shaina Taub cannot handle the lead. Unlike Manuel who wrote and starred in Hamilton, Taub never overwhelms us with her acting, singing nor dancing. The book, music and lyrics were all written by her, but she should have yielded the lead to someone who could have carried this musical to the fi nish line. Like “Funny Girl”, this show will be much stronger when she exits the show as the lead.

Every season calls for a different perfume scent. While each bottle is an art of its own, Scentbird curves the need to buy full size of each new trendy scent. Originally created as a scent recommendation platform in 2014, Mariya Nurislamova and co-founders switched up their idea after people asked for fragrance samples. A recommendation platform then became a 30-day supply for your fragrance of choice.
Regarding the brand name, Mariya wanted something short and sweet. Mariya knew she wanted “scent” within the name, and looked to keep the end one syllable, which brought her to wanting “bird” as the second word. While “Scentbird” took less than a minute to name, it’s known to everyone.
Scentbird was born out of passion. Although Mariya already had a large collection of scents, she found herself shopping at department stores for more. Mariya had hope creating a scent recommendation platform would take away the stress people feel while shopping for perfume. Scentbird’s subscription eliminates the old perfume bottle sitting on your shelf after one-to-two uses. Mariya gave shoppers the chance to sample, discover and experience all on one platform.
With more than 800 fragrances to choose from, Scentbird’s business development team maintains relationships with hundreds of heritage and indie fragrance brands. With their scent quiz, customers are able to input what they like to find their best selection from 100% authentic perfumes. Questions ranging from your mood, energy and gender preference will take you to a selected scent catalog tailored to you.
In the past 12 months, the most popular female fragrances have been: Ariana Grande Ari, Versace Bright Crystal Absolu and Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. The most popular male fragrances have been Versace Eros, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Pour Homme and Sexual Noir Pour Homme by Michel Germain.
Each subscription includes an 8ml fragrance that has about 130 sprays total. With an option to get one or three fragrances to test, Scentbird gives you a variety of subscription preferences. With the niche fragrances and subscription services only found at Scentbird.com, you can discover endless scents without paying full price for bottles you may not love.

Niacinamide has become the skin care ingredient du jour, with Vitamin C following close behind. Labeled the “it” ingredient by influencers, Niacinamide formulations have jumped more than 220% in recent years. Vitamin C has also experienced a resurgence, as evidenced by elevated sales and Google searches. In fact, both Niacinamide and Vitamin C consistently rank in the top five searched skin care ingredients on the Internet.
Admired for their complementary tone-evening and brightening powers, it might be assumed that using Niacinamide and Vitamin C together provides enhanced benefits. However, Niacinamide and Vitamin C are a controversial pair. Over time, some have claimed that combining the two ingredients can neutralize the effectiveness of each—or, worse yet, create a substance that reddens skin.
With sunspots and age spots ready to pop up under the summer sun, we were eager to learn more about these ingredients and how they might help (or hurt) our brightening routine. For answers, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.
The newest innovation to emerge from Roth’s lab is Potent-C™ Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment.
Here, Roth reveals the science behind this breakthrough formula and settles the Niacinamide and Vitamin C debate once and for all.
What do you think about pairing Niacinamide and Vitamin C?
Go for it! The idea that you can’t combine these ingredients is a myth. It doesn’t matter what order you apply them, it’s more about the product formulations.
A general rule of thumb is to apply skin care in order of thin to thick, using the thinnest product fi rst and the thickest product last. For example, if you have a Vitamin C serum and a Niacinamide cream, you would apply the Vitamin C serum fi rst.
Why do you think some people believe you can’t mix these two ingredients?
There are outdated studies from the 1960s that combined unstable forms of Niacinamide and Vitamin C at extremely high temperatures. When you use stable forms of these ingredients, the results are actually quite impressive! I’m always looking to innovate and take things to the next level, which is why I took my cult-favorite Pro Strength Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment and added THD Ascorbate Vitamin C. Unlike the traditional Vitamin C that was used decades ago, THD Ascorbate Vitamin C is not only ultra-stable but also 50 times more powerful.
Tell us more about your new Potent-C™ Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment.
I’m all about helping my customers to achieve clinically stronger results! When my Pro Strength Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment fi rst launched, it was a viral sensation—everyone loved it and kept coming back for more. I packed the formula with a 15% Brightening Complex of Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin and Pentapeptide, and the results were out of this world! My new Potent-C™ Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment has the same 15% Brightening Complex, plus THD Ascorbate Vitamin C for an even stronger brightening solution. Entering a new generation of restaurants reimagining Cantonese cuisine, YAO, by Chef-Owner Kenny Leung and Co-Owner Thomas Tang of the acclaimed August Gatherings, is an evolution of the beloved dishes cultivated there over the years, along with new creations and their unparalleled dedication to culinary excellence and service.
Chef Kenny’s journey began at the tender age of 15 when he immersed himself in a government culinary program in Canton, China, delving deep into the artistry of Cantonese cuisine. His formative years were spent honing fundamental skills, complimented by an apprenticeship in Canton Culinary School. After graduating, Chef Kenny flourished at Canton’s prestigious White Swan Hotel and Restaurant, an institution revered for its Cantonese gastronomy; it was the only restaurant to earn a Michelin Star when Michelin Guide graced Guangzhou, China. There, he collaborated with acclaimed chefs from diverse provinces, exposing him to various cuisine techniques. In 1988, he moved to New York City, venturing into the bustling culinary landscape and further enhancing his culinary repertoire. In 2015, he co-founded August Gatherings with Tang.
Tang has been immersed in hospitality since he was a child. He grew up as the son of one of China’s top chefs who catered for regal events. Thomas shopped in the local markets with his father for the best ingredients which were used in the elaborate banquets that his father would prepare for his clientele. As he matured into an adult, Thomas moved to New York City to set his own course in the culinary industry. He met Chef Kenny while working together in the original location of August Gatherings. The two became fast friends and decided to join forces to purchase the Canal Street location of August Gatherings and have been partners ever since.
For YAO, Chef Kenny and his team of 20 cooks are creating a canvas that showcases the past, present, and future of Cantonese cuisine. Center to the YAO’s ethos are the crown jewels of Cantonese cuisine, abalone, sea cucumber and fi sh maw—textures less familiar to the American palate—emphasizing their gelatinous, chewy nature and remarkable nutritional value.
Chef Kenny’s modern innovations and standout signature dishes include the Traditional Chinese Salt-Baked FreeRange Chicken. Although Chef maintains the tradition of the dish, he modernizes it by air drying the chicken, then wrapping it in parchment paper and manually basting it in an old and new salt combination (the old for smokiness, the new for saltiness) then slow baking it for one-and-a-half hours, producing a bird that is tender, moist and rich in fl avor. It is presented to the diner in an ornate clay pot, then cut and portioned by the server. The Fusilli with
Wild Octopus and Bone Marrow is a nod to the chef’s admiration for Italian cuisine. The dish is innovated by braising the noodles instead of frying them. He creates a tomato-based sauce made with fresh Chinese salted fi sh instead of anchovy giving it an umami fl avor. He then adds a cilantro and oyster sauce made from dried oysters and bone marrow, enriching the depth of fl avors into the noodles. For the Fried Rice with Roasted Eel, Chef Kenny wraps the rice in an egg wash so the rice adheres to the grain, creating a soft texture. This technique was used for the kings of ancient China. Chef Kenny uses a long-grain Jasmine rice from Thailand and a short-grain rice from Japan. Dry-Aged Tomahawk Steak, a classic Western dish that has a Cantonese twist by using black salt to harmonize the richness of the steak. He then creates a special sauce infused with red wine and hibiscus, combining traditional techniques with modern fl avors. The Portuguese Egg Custard Tart, the chef’s gem, is a very sentimental dish to Chef Kenny, as it brings back childhood memories. It takes eight hours of preparation to hand-kneed the dough into more than 20 layers. For the egg preparation, he uses fresh, local milk and farm raised eggs to prepare the perfect custard and is then caramelized Portuguese style. August Gatherings sells more than 500 tarts daily.
Chef Kenny has added a seven-course tasting menu, named “Jia Yan,” a Chinese word loosely translating to “a celebratory family gathering” or “banquet.” The tasting menu begins with Deep Fried Hokkaido Scallop followed by Shikoku Bamboo Shrimp Dumpling. The banquet continues with Gold Leaf Wrapped Fried Abalone, sustainably sourced grade-6 wild abalone from South Africa is deep-fried, sitting atop of a crispy wonton skin wit house made sauce, encased in edible gold leaf. One of the main stars of the progression is the Alaskan King Crab Wensi Tofu Soup, which Chef Kenny uses immaculate knife skills to create razor-thin slices of tofu, taking hours of preparation, producing 800-1000 identical slices of tofu in each portion. Grilled Angus Short Ribs, tenderized with kiwi, drizzled tableside in a pear and oyster sauce. The next course follows with Snow Pea Shoots in chicken broth. The fi nal course is Wild Octopus, from Spain, slow cooked for six hours; it is then laid on a bed of Hong Kong style longevity noodles. Seasonal signature desserts include a warm Deep Fried Mochi Sesame Ball fi lled with Red Bean Paste served on top of a homemade seasonal fuji apple sorbet, providing a contrast in fl avors and temperatures as well as a Pumpkin Cake fi lled with custard.

Heritage Grand Bakery, Grand Restaurant & Pizza Bar was opened by maverick restaurateur, Lou Ramirez, of Maison Kayser, Fig & Olive and former president of Le Pain Quotidien. Ramirez’s partners Luc Boulet, a Master Baker and fourth-generation bread artisan from France who opened 80 Maison Kayser bakery-cafés across 14 countries, and Alex Garese, founder of Wolkonsky Bakery, are all experienced veterans in the world of bread, pastry and restaurants.
Together, they had a vision of opening a bakery and restaurant that reflected their dedication to Ancient Grains and Artisanal Milling Techniques, with menu items that would showcase their unique grains, grown before the introduction of intensive, scientific plant breeding in the mid-1900s.
The 4,500-square-foot space is divided into two distinctive operations, Heritage Grand Bakery which opened in December 2021 and Heritage Grand Restaurant & Pizza Bar, which opened in April 2023. The 1,500-square-foot bakery is where the imported ancient grains from owner Garese’s farm in Europe, comprised of 17 varieties, are combined to create Heritage’s proprietary grain blend called Population Wheat.
Harvesting Practices: To harvest these grains, the restaurant is dedicated to employing regenerative farming practices, most notably, crop rotation. Crop rotation is the method of growing a series of different crops in the same area in sequential growing seasons, improving the nutrients in the crop. It is also a useful method for preventing soil diseases, weed problems and infestation of insect pests, as well as building healthy soils.
In turn, these Heritage grains contain an accentuated value in lipids and carotenes, which give the bread a cream color and offer a signature aroma, as well as making it optimized for baking and pastry making. Eating these “ancient” varieties offers several benefits, such as high nutritional value, ease of digestibility and low allergenic potential.
Heritage Grand Bakery bakes a variety of fresh breads daily. Executive Head Baker Mark Fiorentino (formerly of Daniel, Café Boulud) and his dedicated team of bakers arrive throughout the middle of the night to mill the wheat grains into flour, mix and roll the dough, and expertly craft the fresh bread each morning. Highlights include their proprietary Population Wheat made of 17 varieties of ancient grains that they import from Europe and mill on site. Heritage’s Hudson Valley Sourdough is made with locally grown wheat practicing similar traditions used for ancient grains from New York’s Hudson Valley.
Executive Pastry Chef Damien Herrgott (formerly of La Goulue, Bosie Bakery) curates and executes Heritage Bakery’s menu of delicious baked goods, including viennoiseries, cookies, cakes, pastries and desserts. Highlights include Pistachio Cruffin, muffin shaped croissant dough filled with pistachio pastry cream; Plie au Chocolat, buttery, flaky croissant dough folded and filled with vanilla pastry cream and dark chocolate chips; Meringue, sweetened egg whites with almonds; Apricot Danish, croissant dough filled with a mixture of pastry cream and apricots.
Heritage Grand Restaurant & Pizza Bar: is the adjacent 3,000-square-foot elegant dining room. The restaurant offers cross-utilization of ancient grains and population wheat in their Mediterranean-inspired dishes and pizzas.
Helming the kitchen is newly appointed Executive Chef Steve Pereyda (formerly of Aureole Restaurant, Rouge Tomate), showcasing a menu of wood-fired entrées and pizzas, made in dual wood-fired ovens, which are the heart of the restaurant; Grilled Octopus with smashed fingerling potato, roasted onion, olives, capers and parsley; Heritage Meatballs, beef & pork with pomodoro, ancient grain breadcrumbs and ricotta; Branzino topped with a generous portion of pistachio chermoula, served with a side of haricot vert and charred lemon, Ancient Grains Spaghetti—a vegetarian option— population wheat pasta with roasted mushroom and garlic, sprinkled with rich Parmigiano. Pizzas and flatbreads, Moroccan Spiced Lamb Flatbread, spiced ground lamb, pickled shallots and a drizzle of citrus labneh on a thin, crisp flatbread made from 100% population wheat; Thin crust Diavola pizza with spicy soppressata, fior di latte, tomato and drizzled with chili oil.
Dessert highlights are warm Toffee Pudding Cake served with vanilla ice cream; Orange Passionfruit Cheesecake made with cream cheese mousse and orange marmalade atop Ω`a graham cracker crust; Orange Olive Oil Cake with aromatic spices, drizzled with golden honey and served with vanilla schlag crème.
The bakery’s impressive Coffee Bar serves their exclusive signature roasted blend and single original beans from across the globe. Hot and Cold Teas are sourced from historic tea-growing regions in direct collaboration with the farmers.
The restaurant also offers a sophisticated beverage menu featuring a well-curated global wine list comprised of red, white, rosé and sparkling options, along with draft and bottled beers and creative cocktails.

Glynn Turman’s journey reads like a love letter to the city that never sleeps. Raised amidst the vibrant tapestry of Manhattan’s West Village, Turman’s early years were infused with the rhythm and soul of New York City. While his path to stardom may have begun in the shadows of skyscrapers, it was in the spotlight of high school where his true talent blossomed. Now, with over six decades of captivating audiences across screens both big and small, Turman stands as a towering fi gure in the world of entertainment. A master of his craft, he has seamlessly transitioned between acting, directing, writing and producing, each endeavor a testament to his boundless creativity and unwavering dedication. Yet, amidst the glitz and glamour, Turman’s heart remains fi rmly rooted in the streets that raised him, a testament to the enduring spirit of a true New York native.
At 12 years old, he stepped onto Broadway’s illustrious stage, a star in the making, in “A Raisin in the Sun.” But behind the curtain of his early success lay a journey riddled with unexpected turns. Growing up, Turman’s aspirations mirrored the grit and determination of his idol, Jackie Robinson, envisioning a life on the baseball diamond. It took an encounter with a mentor to see his true calling, leading him to the High School of Performing Arts, where his talents found fertile ground to flourish. As he traded in his glove for a script, Turman’s academic struggles dissolved, replaced by the soaring grades that mirrored his newfound passion. With his mother’s support and a newfound clarity of purpose, he embarked on a trajectory that would see him become a luminary of stage and screen.
“I had been bitten with the acting bug as a child. It didn’t take effect until after high school,” Turman said.
From there, Turman started his career wherever acting took him- from on and off Broadway to regional theaters or shows in small houses with low pay. In taking what came along, Turman landed a movie role alongside James Caan and Robert Redford. “It was quite thrilling,” Turman said. “We were all pursuing careers at the same time together.”
From low pay projects to now, Turman has been a part of hit series like “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Suits,” “Criminal Minds” and “Fargo.” Some hit movies include “Bumble Bee,” “Race,” “Takers” and “Rustin”
In a motion picture fi lm, one of Turman’s favorite roles was Leroy “Preach” Jackson in “Cooley High,” a now iconic American classic. As a coming of age story, this role was something Turman himself could easily relate to. “People in Chicago to this day still call me Preach if they see me walking down the street. I always respond to it,” Turman said.
Another favorite role of Turman’s is Moses Wright in “Women of the Movement.” The powerful and challenging role still lingers with him.
While some roles are a favorite to play, Turman appreciates others for how viewers respond to them. The popular sitcom, “A Different World” reunited and is now touring across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) 30 years after the show came out. “I give props to that
show and our characters because they say we’re responsible for black students looking to pursue the HBCU experience,” Turman said. “I was able to put that on the list of accomplishments through my profession.”
In his years of acting, Turman has played and embodied dozens of characters with multiple personalities between each role, with some having a big impact on people. While it depends on if it’s a fi lm, series or stage, different roles are his favorite to take on.
When Turman fi rst lands a role, he starts by reading the script in order to understand the story, what his character contributes to the story and what his character’s job is in telling the author’s story. To memorize his lines, Turman will read them over and over again, putting them into his subconscious before bed, then fi rst thing when he wakes up.
For Turman, the hardest part about getting into character is keeping himself out of the way when developing the character. Recently, he worked on “Horizon: An American Saga,” a fi lm from his favorite genre, Western. While in wardrobe, he came across a cowboy hat he wanted to pick for his character to wear but stopped himself. “I realized that it was me, Glynn attracted to the hat, whose ego was great enough to wear it. But my character has an ego that wouldn’t let him wear it,” Turman said. As far as movie sets go, “Horizon” was amongst his favorites, enjoying himself around the horses, cattle and the mountains in Utah.
Turman spends a good amount of time behind the camera as a director as well. Although he prefers to be in front of the camera, his most memorable time directing was with the Wayans Brothers. For Turman, directing allowed him to be in a different world from what he’d been used to.
To celebrate the hours of acting Turman has done, he’s grabbed nominations and won awards including a few NAACP Awards, Ovation Awards and Emmys. He’s most proud of his Emmy award for the series, “In Treatment.” “They’re on my mantelpiece, I’m so proud of them all,” Turman said.
Although Turman has been in the industry for years, he notes that the hardest thing about the job is making it look as though you aren’t actually acting. “The actor’s job is mastering your craft,” he explained. When Turman fi nds himself having difficulty in a role, he relies on what he learned in training and surrounds himself with opinions he respects. “If something comes up that I question, I get another actor’s opinion or the director’s take on it,” Turman said. One part of a director’s job is to get through the difficult choices they’re making for their characters.
To take a step back from the industry, Turman falls back on being an equestrian. He has been a professional rodeo cowboy for more than 30 years and owns a small ranch outside of Los Angeles where he raises and trains horses with his family. “It’s my other passion and how I divorce myself from the industry, so to speak,” Turman said.
In a hard, competitive industry, values must be kept in order to continue pushing on and Turman lives by a few.
“Be in it for the love of it. Not for fame or fortune,” he said.
For people getting started in the industry, Turman says to use the tools available in a very competitive business. “That expertise, that craftsmanship will secure you a space as you go along in your journey as a performer,” Turman said.
To catch some of Turman’s recent and upcoming shows, check out “Percy Jackson’’ now on Disney+ and “Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1” in theaters this June. You can also currently stream “The Big Cigar’’ on Apple TV+. To learn more about Glynn Turman and the life the accomplished actor has lived, watch his excellent documentary, “The Legend of Glynn Turman’’ on Peacock, Tubi or The Roku Channel.

After searching for perfection, co-founders Frank Schilling and Gabi Petrylaite created a rosé that found them. Aphrodise, a luxury Greek sparkling rosé, was created through late 2022 and officially launched in the Cayman Islands in the summer of 2023.
Schilling is an artist, musician and entrepreneur while Petrylaite is a digital marketing agency founder and an International Brain Education Olympiad medalist and ambassador. Pre COVID, Schilling and Petrylaite were traveling in Greece tasting lots of wine and found the Xinomavro grape varietal. “The grape varietal is special and has distinctive characteristics in relation to how the wine makes you feel, especially within a sparkling format,” Petrylaite said.
Although both founders didn’t know much about rosé before entering the scene, they had a tendency to over-consume some lower quality varietals. “When we first tasted Aphrodise, it really broke the spell,” Schilling said. The hardest part for co-founders felt like all of it. From discovering the grape in sparkling form, to perfecting the brand and packaging then showing others its special attributes.
“It has been so incredible rewarding seeing the joy in people’s faces glass after glass,” Petrylaite said. “Aphrodise brings celebration and happiness along with it.” Seeing the product grow makes it worthwhile for each.
With so many kinds of wine, Schilling and Petrylaite were drawn to rosé after realizing how they felt after drinking the Xinomavro grape, a black grape that gives a beautiful rose color. Back in the day, you
had to be “important enough” to consume Xinomavro grapes, which are often regarded as the “Most Noble” grape of Greece. Consuming large quantities of this grape were kind to both the mind and the stomach. With the use of this grape varietal, Aphrodise can stand out from their competitors using other grapes and production methods.
When growing anything, an optimal climate is needed. For the best quality Xinomavro grapes high-altitude arid, sandy soil is needed. In Greece, the viniculture is more respectful to the grape and the land it grows on than other wine regions. “Everything Greece does to cultivate their grapes and the land is sustainable,” Schiilling said.
For Aphrodise’s unique bottle, the idea was to have a glass that protected the grape from outside light and a dynamic brand motif that didn’t evolve much overtime. “Our stylized Shield with its distinctive letter ‘A’, stands for the category “Afrodis” (Greek for Xinomavro Bubbly),” Petrylaite said. With the shield and stylized letter as brandmarks, Aphrodise sets the standards for other companies and future products. “Our slogan, ‘The Season That Never Ends’ is the mood I was hoping to capture,” Schilling followed with.
As of now, Schilling and Petrylaite plan to stick with the Xinomavro grape for its exceptional characteristics though they are currently developing a Brut Blanc using the same vineyard. Aphrodise is special because of the grape used. As Schilling and Petrylaite say, “Never leave the good time you’re having for the good time you wish you were having.”
At this year’s Met Gala, themed “Garden of Time,” Bad Bunny turned heads and sparked conversations with his avant-garde look from Maison Margiela. Known for his fearless fashion choices, the music superstar delivered yet another unforgettable ensemble that perfectly encapsulated the night’s motif.
Adorned in a seemingly unfinished Maison Margiela suit, Bad Bunny’s outfit played with the concept of time itself—unfinished yet timeless, much like a garden perennially in mid-blossom. The stark, chalk-like stitches against the dark fabric echoed the meticulous rows of a gardener’s planting, suggesting growth and evolution, while the suit’s raw hems and loose threads whispered tales of a process still unfolding, a masterpiece still emerging.
But what truly tied Bad Bunny’s look to the “Garden of Time” theme were the delicate black flowers adorning his ensemble, a nod to the enchanting yet thorny narrative of “Sleeping Beauty” and
the mystical flax plant. These floral accents did more than just embellish; they spun a narrative of beauty born from darkness, of blooms that thrive at midnight, lending a gothic yet romantic allure to his modern-day troubadour persona.
With his signature boldness, Bad Bunny didn’t just wear an outfit; he wore a statement. Through the interplay of an undone suit and the dark florals, he captured the essence of the gala’s theme—highlighting the beauty in the unfinished, the strength in vulnerability and the perpetual cycle of decay and rebirth found in both nature and fashion.
This look stands out not only for its conceptual depth but for its audacity to redefine masculinity within the frames of high fashion. It’s a reminder that in the garden of time, every moment is a seed from which new possibilities sprout, and Bad Bunny, much like the blooms on his suit, continues to evolve, pushing boundaries and defying expectations in both music and fashion.

Sisters Ann Arnold and Isabella Fiske co-founded the Mark Schonwetter Holocaust Education Foundation (MSHEF) in honor of their father, with their mission being to provide funding for teachers across the country to include Holocaust education in their lesson plans, as well as empowering educators to teach anti-hate initiatives and cultivate a schooling environment founded on equality, kindness and respect. The funds can be used for purchasing educational materials, subsidizing field trips or covering the costs of speakers, assemblies and programs. Since its founding in 2019, the MSHEF has granted over $293,000, reaching over 114,000 students across 31 states.
Mark Schonwetter was only five-years-old when the Nazis invaded his home country of Poland and he was forced to flee with his mother and younger sister. They spent months in a nearby ghetto, until they were forced to hide for three years in the Polish countryside. By the end of the war, Mark was one of only a handful of surviving Jews from his town. He moved to Israel with his mother and sister in 1957. In the 1960s, he immigrated to the United States alone, where he found work in a jewelry factory. Ultimately, he purchased a different jewelry company and remained in the industry until his retirement in 2018. Along the way he met his wife of 59 years, Luba and had his two daughters, Ann and Isabella.
In 2016, Ann published “Together: A Journey for Survival,” a book retelling her father’s story. “We grew up hearing bits and pieces of my dad’s story,” Ann said. “In 2009, we went back to Poland and it was such a life-changing experience.” This trip inspired her to share her father’s incredible story with the world, first through blog posts, which then turned into her full-length book. After the book’s release, Mark and his daughters began sharing his story with students and adults throughout the Northeast. “The book ushered him into this new chapter and sparked all the speaking engagements, and now, the foundation. It’s all a continuation,” Ann explained.
Ann’s book is also required reading at some schools Mark visits, leading for him to become akin to a celebrity in the hallways. “You would think Beyonce walked into the auditorium with the way kids cheer and stand and clap. It’s the sweetest thing. That’s when you see the effect that this story can have on children,” she said.
Ann and Isabella, after the initial speaking engagements, discovered even affluent school districts weren’t receiving proper funding for Holocaust education, which sparked the idea for the non-profit. “My sister and I wanted to do something for our dad, and we wanted to do something that was meaningful and that was needed,” Ann said. Today, there are only 27 states that mandate Holocaust education. However, mandating and funding are two entirely separate entities. “In the same state, one school district may learn about the Holocaust in a single 50-minute period, and then in another school, they have a wide range of programs and bring in speakers and supply further educational tools. We started the foundation to hopefully bridge the gap,” Ann explained.
How to Support: Creative Initiatives
There are several ways to support the foundation. One of the most
impactful ways is through financial contributions. By donating, individuals can directly contribute to the foundation’s ability to provide grants to schools and educators in need. Additionally, individuals can participate in fundraising events and initiatives organized by the foundation, such as “Journey for the Living,” a virtual fitness event where participants can choose to walk, run or ride 15 miles either in a day, every week or throughout the month. The 15 miles is a tribute to the distance Mark and his family walked in one night to escape their hometown in Poland. MSHEF is also an official charity partner for the New York City Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, November 3.
A recent feat for the organization was at the 36th Annual Teen Symposium for the Holocaust in Pennsylvania, where Holocaust education is not mandated statewide. This year’s event had a surge in attendance, with 1,650 students coming together to engage over two days filled with speakers, historical films and educational workshops. This uptick in attendance directly correlates with MSHEF’s work, as they gave out grants which funded 600 of the student’s experiences. Another notable success story stems from their outreach in Michigan, where their efforts led to a significant increase in grant applications, from just three to 91 in one year. MSHEF’s primary goal is to expand Holocaust education funding to all 50 states, ensuring widespread awareness and access to resources, by annually fundraising 2.5 million dollars.

Art has always been a place of breaking the rules. As Tiffany Dubin who has also curated “Sculpture to Wear,” an exhibition of artist made jewelry at the Sotheby’s Gallery on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, pointed out recently in her lecture the Museum of Arts and Design: “Art jewelry is a form of expression. It’s not about precious stones. It’s not about platinum or gold,” Tiffany explained. “It’s about alternative materials, found objects - they tell stories.” Cases in point included in Tiffany’s lecture were a gold necklace that looked as though it was made of cardboard and glowing gem colored paper earrings. MAD curator Barbara Paris Gifford elaborated, “It’s all about exploring connections and boundaries.”
Appreciative members of the audience, eager to start their own explorations included Roberta Amon, Jeffrey Banks, Phillip Bloch, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Pat Cleveland, Cece Cord, Will Cotton, Barbara de Portago, Lauren Ezersky, Han Feng, Barbara Flood, Michele Gerber Klein, Barbara Hoffman, Gemma Kahng, Harold Koda, Martha Kramer, Sally Lee, Laura Lobdell, Fern Mallis, Marsy Mittlemann, Tinu Naija, Katrina Pavlos, Emma Snowdon-Jones, Benny Tabatabai, Kay Unger Pitman and Barbara Winston.
Nicole Kidman, stunning in a black-and-white silk-and-feather confection by Balenciaga, provided the major movie-star energy at this year’s Met Gala, dubbed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Before Kidman and her husband
Keith Urban joined the fun, the ex-wife of Tom Cruise received the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in LA. At the Met, Kidman confided she was thrilled with the award but emphasized “I’m not done yet!” Also on the AFI red carpet were Jane Seymour and her pal, author Christy Cashman, talking about producing the screen adaptation of Cashman’s novel “The Truth About Horses,” which just won three literary honors at the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards.
Top male charisma at the Met came courtesy of Chris Hemsworth, who, along with Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Anna Wintour, co-chaired the benefit. The iconic gala, AKA the Party of the Year, has raised over $223 million under Wintour’s wings. This year’s tickets clocked in at $75,000 each, making it the most expensive and exhilarating night on the town.
This year’s theme was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s story “The Garden of Time.” Standouts included singer Tyla, who wore a Balmain dress made of sand with an hourglass serving as her purse. Zendaya fi rst appeared as a woodland creature in a custom Maison Margiela by John Galliano peacock frock and then reappeared for round two in a floral headdress and black gown from Galliano’s tenure at Givenchy in 1996. The evening drew a dazzling crowd of A-listers from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez to Tom Ford. Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute said, “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion.”
The exhibition is an exploration of fashion’s evolution, blending historical garments with cutting-edge techniques. Over 250 rare items from the Met’s permanent collection were on display from 17th century bodices to contemporary acquisitions by such designers as Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney. Every fashion legend of the 20th century is on display, including Dior, Chanel, Schiaparelli and Charles James, who was represented by his classic black Tulip and Siren dresses. Central to the exhibition are the “Sleeping Beauties,” historical garments that have been preserved over the centuries and are shown laid fl at in glass cases because they are too delicate to be hung on mannequins.
Through an array of sensory experiences, including scented displays, video animation, light projection, sound scaping and AI, visitors are immersed in the stories behind each garment. Max Hollein, the Met’s director said, “‘Sleeping Beauties’ will heighten our engagement with these masterpieces of fashion by evoking how they feel, move, sound, smell and interact when being worn, ultimately offering a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty and artistic brilliance of the works on display.” TikTok is the exhibition’s lead sponsor, with support from Loewe and Condé Nast. This blockbuster runs until September 2, 2024. metmuseum.org

FKA Twigs hosted her Met Gala afterparty at the Boom Boom Room. Guests included Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon, Tessa Thompson, and Camilla Cabello, who carried a block of ice with a copper rose frozen inside as her purse. Another conversation piece was designer Helen Yarmak’s gold Kama Sutra necklace that features all 64 positions depicted in the notorious, ancient Hindu text. Goldie Hawn was the fi rst to wear the necklace, and now Yarmak has released a set of earrings, rings, and bracelets in both gold and sterling silver bedecked in diamonds and coral. The designer’s fans include Rihanna, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga . helenyarmak.com
John Paulson and his amaretta Alina de Almeida, Dana and Bob Kraft, Audrey and Martin Gruss, Andrea and Steve Wynn, Kimberly and Neil Bluhm, and Eleanor were among the rich and richer at fi nancier John Phelan’s 60th birthday party in Palm Beach. Phelan’s wife Amy, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, created the Rock the Casbah themed event. The 400 glamorous guests all dolled up in Moroccan styled outfits and dined and danced into the wee hours. The party was held in an Arabian tent behind the couple’s art-strewn house and garden. The Phelans were named to ARTnews’s Top 200 Collectors list in 2023 with a collection that was described by a Christie’s auction house curator as “brave…a celebration of the sexual side of life with a sense of humor.” Their collection, which is also on view at their Aspen, London and New York estates, includes pieces by Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Jenny Holzer and Marilyn Minter.
Suzanne Somers’ widower Alan Hamel, who runs her legacy company Suzanne Organics, says he has a system for going out with women to avoid talk that he has a girlfriend. “I only go out with two women at a time because I don’t want people to think I have a girlfriend.” He added, “Ever since my daughter-in-law Caroline Somers told friends at Suzanne’s celebration of life, ‘Alan is ready to start socializing,’ my phone hasn’t stopped ringing. I like going out and all the ladies are friends, there’s nothing romantic going on. I enjoy their company and we all have fun together.” Somers died of breast cancer six months ago, the day before her 77th birthday. suzannesomers.com
