one mann’s opinion
Before we get into my note, I’d like to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.
Our cover this month is Oz Pearlman and the relationship I have with him has been greatly built over the years. About 15 years ago I met Oz in TBar with my wife, Annie. At our first meeting, he performed mentalist tricks on my wife and me, and ever since then I recommend Oz to everyone I know. I knew our relationship would grow from there.
His name grew rapidly and worldwide from that moment on. My wife and I have been proud to watch Oz through every accomplishment from being on ESPN, NFL, ABC, CBS and more. He is an amazing person and an even better friend. If you haven’t seen it, make plans to and thank me after.
As we transition to the cooler months, my wife and I will be spending more time in Palm Beach with the other snowbirds. While I go back and forth during the week, I trust my Mann Publications team to keep on top of everything through phone calls instead of Zoom.
The stream of Hamptons events has now transferred to Palm Beach and rest assured we will continue to feature the top events. As the lead promoter of Mount Sinai Concierge Care in Palm Beach, we are proud to see the success of their new endeavor.
With this month’s cover on Oz Pearlman, we are in the planning stage of holding an event in conjunction with the one we held with Kavita Channe. We hope to hold more events in the future.
Each month with do diligent research on fabulous articles for our readers. Some of the features I’d like to mention are the Arts and Affairs on Jewish artists influencing modern art, and the Health and Wellness feature on Dr. Lyle Leipziger. My editor Alex who I’m very proud of, and I work very hard to bring everyone the best features.
Happy New Year and enjoy our October issue.

Social Network SohoMuse teams with Multi-Grammy Winning Producer to Create Groundbreaking Show at the Guggenheim
Grammy-winning producer Emilio Estefan united during New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with Consuelo Vanderbilt’s trailblazing social network, SohoMuse, to present the groundbreaking show “Latin Ignition – The Magic of Art.”
Hundreds of notable attendees gathered at Manhattan’s landmark Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum to witness the incredible platform along with Estefan Enterprises, Inc. to present the thrilling work of designers Alvin Valley, Laura Garcia, Nabys Vielman and César Galindo.
The collections hit the runway in the hallowed
halls of the art institute as Los Rabanes and DJ Hex Hector performed before a captivated audience.
Latin Ignition showcased a movement that highlights the work of some of the most prolific Latino artisans, as the Latin American market comprises 18% of the population of the United States and is therefore a significant proportion of the country’s creative energy. Uniquely, the producers took measures to appropriately make sure that each worker – not just designers and models, but also behind-the-scenes hair and make-up artists were financially compensated for the show. Highlighting a deep appreciation for the art world and fashion industry, Estefan
and Vanderbilt set the agenda during NYFW that will ripple positively around the globe to highlight the need for inclusivity at all levels.
Sponsors of the event included Family Office Association, Keystone National Properties (KNPRE), Known Holdings and JP Morgan Chase & Co.
Notable Attendees included: Emilio Estefan, Consuelo Vanderbilt, Alvin Valley, Laura Garcia, Nabys Vielman, César Galindo, Los Rabanes, DJ Hex Hector, Natasha Bedingfield, Downtown Julie Brown, David Belafonte, Malena Belafonte, Maureen Reidy, Leesa Rowland and Mariebel Lieberman.

Retro Stage Highlights ‘30s and ‘40s Styles in 20th-Century
Fashion Collections
Iconic American fashion brand Anne Klein marks an impactful year with the debut of its new Fall/Winter 2023 fashion campaign featuring supermodel, entrepreneur and new mom, Jasmine Tookes and the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) event in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Versailles, which brought American sportswear to the forefront of global fashion.
Anne Klein played a powerful role in the American triumph of the Battle of Versailles and remains the torch bearer to this seismic event that shifted not only American culture, but changed the way people dress around the world. To mark the anniversary, on September 11th Anne Klein partnered with NYFW: The Talks to produce a panel discussion entitled “Battle of Versailles 50: The Making of Fashion History.”
Tookes moderated a distinguished panel at Spring Studios that included those who were originally part of the historic Versailles event:
• Designer Stephen Burrows, the last surviving designer from the original ten (10)
• Donna Karan, the right hand of Anne Klein at that time. Anne was the sole female designer of the original ten (10)
• Trailblazing models Alva Chinn and Pat Cleveland whose legendary modeling styles revolutionized the catwalk
Although Klein founded her eponymous brand in 1968, forever changing the way women dress, the Battle of Versailles emphatically turned the spotlight on American Sportswear giving it equal footing among the leading French fashion houses. Its universal appeal today is wardrobe staples to buy now and wear forever.
“We take immense pride in honoring Anne’s legacy and keeping that flame alive,” said Jameel Spencer, CMO in Residence for Anne Klein. “The Battle of Versailles not only presented Anne Klein’s work on a world stage, but it was the impetus for social shifts, racial awareness and American magic. As we celebrate multiple milestones this year, on what would’ve been our founder’s 100th birthday, we are thrilled to partner with Jasmine Tookes to recognize the strength of diverse women impacting the world in positive ways and doing it with style and grace as only women can.”
“I am thrilled to be a small part of this storied brand founded by a powerful woman,” adds Tookes, “I’d like to think my power as a woman is my positivity and being able to be a role model for mothers and businesswomen managing it all with grace and style.”

DOMENICO VACCA
As a period piece, the costume design by Sydney Maresca is outstanding and the lighting by Jiyoun Chang captures the very heart of the play. Under the glam lighting, it brings great attention to the excellent scenic design by Paul Tate dePoo lll. Between the three, the cottage is really a lovable place, and the lunatics inside of it make it a must-see!
For the most part, Jerome Butler as dialect coach does a particularly good job as most of the actors capture the accents and the cadence of this British play. The only two problems that I saw with this play were the casting of Lili Cooper as Marjorie. I thought Cooper’s accent, her movements and her “business” were not sufficient in her role. Whereas the other five actors were spot-on in their roles, I thought Cooper was an anchor around the rest of the cast. Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) too, as the director tried too hard for too many laughs. The play on its face is very funny, however, Alexander tries to be overly ridiculous when he doesn’t need to be. Sandy Rustin in her Broadway debut has a winner, the laughs are aplenty! The plot is very creative and keeps the audience fixated on the next shoe to drop. For two hours, evenly spread out over two acts, we are fully entertained with this creative play.

The Sunshine State Swing: Exploring Florida’s Top Golf Courses
BY JORDAN FULLER
The Sunshine State is aptly named, and its sunny disposition makes it the perfect place for almost any outdoor activity! And if you’re a golfing fan, exploring Florida’s golf courses is an excellent way to make the most of that stunning weather!
Picking the best ones can be tricky because Florida boasts over 1,000 courses. Every golfer will have their favorites, and with the sheer number of spectacular venues, we can’t disagree with any of them.
Here are our picks for Florida’s top golf courses. Whether you’re in the sunniest state for business, pleasure, leisure or to escape the cold, take the time to pick one and play a round… They’re all bucket-list-worthy!
Trump National Doral: Blue Monster
You can’t trump this one! Trump National Doral has hosted PGA Events for the past 55 years, so you know the famed Blue Monster is a fantastic quality course and has been for decades. Despite its tropical atmosphere, the course is no walk in the park, so bring your A-game and your best golf clubs if you’re planning on playing a round here.
Water hazards abound, as do deep, ball-swallowing bunkers. At 7,600+ yards, it’s a long and arduous course, which adds to its challenge. This isn’t a course for the faint-hearted, even though it’s completely flat, so don’t let the lack of elevation changes fool you.
The fairways are pristine, but it’s your short game that’ll matter. Well-designed greens that
are firm and just right top each hole with a pinnacle challenge. Wind is always a possible factor in Florida, so keep that in mind as you strategize your way through the Blue Monster. It’s better for experienced golfers and open-minded intermediates who like a fight!
Streamsong Resort: Red Course
Streamsong Resort offers a unique golfing experience, and is surrounded by wide-open, rugged land that makes you feel like you’re playing on another planet. The Red Course regularly wins accolades and mentions as the best in Florida, and it’s not hard to see why.
The layout is varied enough to keep you on your toes throughout your round. Some holes are links-style, rough and rumble. Others are epic target holes with water hazards to add to the test. Overall, the Red Course sticks to the basics of architecture and layout well on their fairways, but the real wham comes in on the creative green complexes.
It opens with two long, hard holes that immediately show you the quality and challenge of the course. With links-like terrain throughout, clever bunkering and always-interesting greens, experienced golfers should enjoy the round but be prepared for a couple of unexpected obstacles along the way.
World Golf Village, King & Bear Course
This resort is the home of the World Golf Hall of Fame, so it’s worth a visit if you’d like a bit of a cultural experience as well as a great round of golf. Its unique name comes from its two architects—Arnold Palmer, nicknamed the King,
and Jack Nicklaus, the Golden Bear.
At 7,279 yards from the tips, it’s a long play, but you can choose from five different tee boxes. You’ll be swinging your clubs amongst pretty trees, making you feel like the stresses of life are far away for the hours you’re on the course.
The wide fairways are expertly landscaped, and the greens are large but might be a little deceptive, so keep your cool and play carefully. You’ll also likely have to contend with wind at some point, so a low, powerful drive is essential to have in your arsenal.
Sarasota National Golf Club
Sarasota National is an Audubon International Certified Signature Sanctuary, so you can expect magnificent beauty along your round as well as good golf. Surrounded by wetlands and scattered with an abundance of trees, including the typical Florida palms, pine trees and oak trees, it’s a haven for native flora and fauna.
Adding to its natural beauty, water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes, but nothing too serious and with no forced carries from the front few tees. You won’t find hectic elevation changes, but be aware that the fairways house subtle curves that can change your course in a matter of seconds.
You’ll have a chance to stretch your arms and show off your swing with one 560-yard par-five and two stretching to over 600 yards. Keep your focus and play true, though, because 88 sand traps await to snatch your ball away from the green.

Blu on the Hudson: Manhattan Skyline with Good Eats
Blu on the Hudson brings a New York City-style dining experience to the waterfront in Weehawken, New Jersey. With stunning views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline, land and sea come together at Blu on the Hudson not just as a view but on the menu as well, with seafood-forward options accented by a top-flight steak program, homemade pasta, a one-of-a-kind cocktail program and soon-to-come rooftop event space.
The concept was created by Blu Hospitality Group, led by Kosta Gianopoulos, who collaborated with Designer Peggy Leung, whose previous projects include Tokyo Disney Sea and being one of the lead designers of TAO Las Vegas, to fill the expansive 30,000-square-foot space, designing a dining environment generally reserved for Manhattan. The sprawling interior has a cozy lounge with a large fireplace and reception, segueing into a spacious main dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide views of the Manhattan skyline. Centering the room is an elegant rectangular white marble-topped bar where artistically crafted cocktails are served. Behind the bar is an array of dining alcoves with green tropical-inspired walls. Beyond that are two private dining rooms with a beautifully curated wine wall. Separated from the main space by sliding glass doors is Blu Sushi Bar, marked by red wallpaper depicting cherry blossoms, natural wood tables and an elegant marble sushi bar.
To undertake the massive project, Blu Hospitality assembled an all-star cast of industry veterans to bring it to life: Executive Chef Juan Carlos “JC” Ortega (BR Guest Hospitality’s Blue Fin, Blue Water Grill and most recently Catch Steak); Beverage Director Jeremy Le Blanche (Thyme Bar, The Gibson, German Gymnasium) and Sommelier Adam Greer (Dovetail, Chestnut).
Chef JC has brought his years of experience working
with seafood and steak to create a menu composed of simple, clean ingredients that elicit complex flavors by drawing on a variety of influences from the Mediterranean and beyond. His cuisine is elevated yet remains approachable, offering selections for every diner to enjoy.
The menu begins with a Raw Bar and Crudo that includes: a Haute Caviar program, one ounce of caviar (28 grams) served with crispy potatoes, brioche toast points and quail deviled eggs; and Dressed East Coast Oyster, with pickled jicama, salmon roe and Meyer lemon.
Appetizers highlight: Shrimp, Basque-style shrimp in a pil pil garlic and chili sauce served with a toasted baguette; Rice Cakes topped with spicy tuna, tobiko and avocado; and Spanish Boquerones, imported white anchovies on pan con tomate, with green olives.
To create the Homemade Pasta, Chef JC collaborated with Chef Alberto Reyes, who worked under Chef Scott Conant as a butcher and pasta maker. The selections include Gemelli with braised veal shank, Grana Padano and basil; hand rolled Gnocchi in a spicy vodka sauce with local ricotta; and a vegan option of Spinach Radiatore in zucchini-basil pesto with pine nuts and vegan feta cheese.
Main courses are dubbed Land & Sea: Chicken served piccata style with baby spinach Whole Branzino for Two, baked and served with bearnaise sauce and charred lemon; and Head-on Shrimp and Diver Scallops with chermoula, lemon and herbs.
Blu on the Hudson’s world-class steak program highlights Midwest Prime Steaks, Australian Wagyu sourced from Westholme and Japanese A-5 Wagyu from the Kagawa Prefecture. Headlining the program is an exclusive Wagyu Skirt Steak, sourced from Westholme and only available at Blu on the Hudson, as well as a mouth-
watering 16-ounce Delmonico.
Desserts were created by Pastry Chef Erika Martinez. She is inspired by classics and presented with a twist, like Classic Tiramisu, with a semi-liquid top that is poured over the dish tableside; Gala Apple Pie Profiteroles with almond crackling, whipped Greek yogurt and bourbon caramel sauce; and Flourless Chocolate S’mores, gluten-free graham cracker with chocolate mousse and marshmallow.
Blu Sushi Bar, just off the main dining room, serves sushi as well as izakaya-inspired cuisine with flavor profiles similar to those in the main dining room created by Chef JC in collaboration with K Dong, who owns Hinoki Greenwich and MIKU SUSHI in Greenwich, Connecticut. The concept is meant to be more casual, offering creative dishes as well as lunch and takeout service.
To create the cocktail list, Beverage Director Jeremy Le Blanche drew from his experience in working at the best cocktail bars around the world to create a program that while unique, is still accessible. His drinks substitute fussy ingredients in favor of theatrical presentations and uncommon garnishes to retain their familiarity while creating a memorable experience for each guest.
The Wine Program was built by Sommelier Adam Greer, who worked with Chef John Fraser at Dovetail and received much of his early wine education from Michael Connolly while working at Chestnut on Smith Street. He has curated a global wine list, with strengths in Bordeaux and Burgundy that features lesser-known wines for a great value relative to their plus quality alongside legacy producers.
Blu on the Hudson is just minutes away from Hoboken and Jersey City by Light Rail, and a picturesque six-minute NY Waterway ferry ride from Manhattan.

As the summer comes to an end, stop by Lulu Kitchen & Bar in Sag Harbor before heading off to a new place for warmer days. Sit down with Managing Partner Steven Jauffrineau and Executive Chef Philippe Corbet and learn more about the fusion bistro.
Where did the Lulu name come from?
The idea behind Lulu was to create a convivial, casual and welcoming environment where people could dine regularly without feeling guilty about their repeat visits. Lulu is your second kitchen of sorts. We needed a name that reflected that. It seems everyone has a “Lulu” in their lives. It’s a nickname, someone’s pet, someone’s long-lost cousin or college roommate. It seems most people can relate to the name, so Lulu was perfect for our restaurant.
What was the inspiration for Lulu Kitchen?
Lulu is inspired by all the good, quality neighborhood restaurants that you can find all over Europe, all the time.
How did you get into the restaurant business?
At 17 years old, I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain about my future path. The opportunity arose to become an apprentice at a Michelin-starred restaurant right in my hometown, and it was an instant love affair. The culinary artistry, the meticulous approach, but most profoundly, the tight-knit camaraderie among the staff members made me feel like part of an extended family; a bond that was undeniably strong.
My guiding philosophy, both then and now, has been to master the finest techniques, to illuminate the essence of each ingredient while keeping the approach down-to-earth and uncomplicated. I believe in the power of creation and learning from others, in mentoring, and in demonstrating the passion that drives us.
We are sensitive to the needs of our guests and committed to a culture that sets us apart and reinforces the fundamentals of good hospitality. At the core of this culture is honesty, integrity and fairness.
What is the concept and cuisine of your food?
The culinary concept I envision is a harmonious fusion of Mediterranean flavors and the inviting charm of a European bistro, with a special touch drawn from a memorable trip to Israel. This unique blend creates a dining experience that exudes warmth and familiarity, akin to a cherished neighborhood gathering spot.
At the heart of our kitchen lies a wood-fired grill, infusing each dish with a distinct smoky essence. This elemental cooking method adds an extra layer of depth to our offerings, enhancing the natural flavors of the ingredients. The wood fire grill serves as a centerpiece, where our dishes are charred to perfection, adding warmth to each dish.
In keeping with our neighborhood-oriented ideals, we strive to cultivate an atmosphere that feels like an extension of home. Our establishment is designed to be an inclusive space, where locals can gather, share stories and savor exceptional food in a relaxed and convivial setting. Our aim is to create an environment that feels like an extension of the community itself.
What are some crowd-favorite suggestions or signature dishes on the menu?
Whole Roasted Cauliflower, Whole Roasted Branzino with tomato Provençale, wood-fired Pizzas and our specials.
Where do you source your ingredients? Do you use local foods?
We take pride in sourcing ingredients from around the world, but our heart belongs to local farms. Balsam Farms, Sagaponack Potatoes and Iacono Farms are just some we work with. Their top-quality produce consistently elevates our dishes, enriching the dining experience for our guests.
What is your chef’s name and background?
Chef Philippe Corbet embarked on his culinary journey in France, where he honed his skills and earned a culinary degree. He further refined his artistry at several Michelin-starred restaurants. Following a stint at Bouley in New York City, Chef Corbet discovered his passion for the exceptional produce and captivating scenery of Long Island. This newfound love led him to venture out east, where he now brings his culinary expertise to life.
What was your imagination for the complete menu?
Our menu was created to harness the captivating flavors of the wood-fired grill and draw inspiration from diverse corners of the globe. Designed to delight and entice our guests on a regular basis, it offers a dynamic and ever-evolving dining experience that is both familiar and exciting. We pride ourselves on a seasonal menu rotation, with our signature dishes remaining as a mainstay.

How Mentalist Oz Pearlman Caught the Magic Bug
BY ALEX BAUMBUSCH
COVER FEATURE
So, what is mentalism anyway? Is it some sort of superpower, psychic ability masquerading as science or run-of-the-mill sleight of hand? According to Pearlman, it is a skill, and just like any other skill, it can be learned, practiced and in turn perfected over many years given the right level of dedication. Yet innate talent plays a huge role in determining the heights you might reach as a performer, in the same way being 6’8’’ isn’t a requirement, but certainly helps one become a good basketball player. Almost all mentalists start out initially as magicians; he told me to think of it like taking pre-med courses prior to getting your doctorate and then eventually becoming a specialist.
The initial spark took place when Pearlman was 13, catching the “magic bug” as he puts it, while on a cruise ship with his family. That chance encounter helped define the rest of his life, as it so often does for people when viewed in hindsight. A magician picked him out of the crowd to assist with a trick known as the sponge balls. Pearlman looked down in shock and awe as little red balls appeared, disappeared and multiplied in his own hands and an obsession instantly took hold. Once back home in Michigan, he checked out every book in the library related to magic, consuming them cover-to-cover. Next up were the tricks of the trade…literally. You need to find magic stores that offer up elaborate decks of cards, gimmicks both colorful and invisible, and a variety of other gadgetry only available within this secret society.
Pearlman was born in Israel and moved to the USA at age 3, with parents who instilled in him a strong work ethic, the result of living in a young country with compulsory military service. To ensure this was not simply a passing phase, Pearlman’s mom said that moving forward he would need to earn the money he required to buy more tricks and books himself, which got the entrepreneurial juices flowing. He walked to the nearest fine dining restaurant and managed to sweet-talk the manager into hiring him to perform for their patrons weekly on their slowest night. Going table to table with close-up magic, Pearlman learned the ropes of how to disarm and entertain a crowd. The natural jump was then to perform at kids’ birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs and eventually corporate events; ultimately paying his way through college at the University of Michigan with this side hustle. Having earned a B.S. in engineering, he followed the

As I sat down for lunch across from the man considered by many to be the greatest mentalist in the world, the thought suddenly struck me… does he know what I’m thinking right now? Our waiter approached and Oz Pearlman nonchalantly looked down at the menu, then over to me and asked, “Are you ready to order?” to which I replied, “Not quite yet, let’s chat for a bit first.”
“When asked what’s next on his busy calendar, Pearlman says he is only getting started and plans to keep pushing the limits both mentally and physically.”

traditional path of working a corporate nine to five, moving to New York City and working for Merrill Lynch. This paid the bills but didn’t seem to satisfy his soul, so he continued performing on the side and slowly but surely building a reputation and name for himself in the big city. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years when a sign from the universe came to Pearlman in the form of an off-handed joke from the CFO of his company. He had been hired to entertain senior leadership of Merrill Lynch and all assumed he was a professional performer. At one point after turning five dollars into five one-hundred-dollar bills, James Gorman who is this? exclaimed, “We need to get you working here mate,” to which Oz replied, “I actually do work here, sir.” Immediately James said, “What are you doing working here?” That question cut to the core of Pearlman’s psyche, and he asked himself truly, and deeply, “What am I doing working here?” A few weeks later he put in his notice and decided to chase his dream.
The old adage that it takes ten years to become an overnight success proved true, almost to the day. A decade after leaving his job on Wall Street, Pearlman had a huge break when his audition on “America’s Got Talent” aired. He captivated the nation week after week with never-before-seen mind-reading stunts and won over not only the judges, but also the entire country, eventually finishing in third place out of thousands of acts. This was the jet fuel needed to propel his career to new heights and become a mainstay on television, appearing on “The Today Show” over 20 times and then all the daytime talk shows.
In 2018, Pearlman joined a very elite and exclusive club, including the likes of David Copperfield and David Blaine, to have their own network TV special. “Oz Knows” aired nationally on NBC to rave reviews and later that year it won him an Emmy Award.
As Pearlman continued to build a name for himself as a mentalist, his other passion for running long distances started to take center stage and almost eclipsed his professional acclaim. He has always believed strongly in giving back to others and felt compelled to act when the war in Ukraine started. Pearlman decided to raise funds and awareness for Save the Children’s Ukraine Fund by trying to break the record for most loops ever run around Central Park in a day. On April 8, 2022, he embarked on this challenge, running 6.1-mile laps around the park repeatedly. Oz shattered the pre-existing record and ended up running 116 miles in just over 18 hours while raising over $116,000 for charity.
The story caught the public’s imagination and made its way around the globe, as it was featured on the front cover of the “New York Times,” the second page of the “Wall Street Journal,” along with “Reuters,” “Runner’s World” and numerous other global publications. The excitement continued when Pearlman broke yet another record on August 4, the single hottest day of the summer. This time he ran 130 blistering miles from Montauk to Manhattan in 21 hours, thus becoming the fastest person ever to traverse Long Island on foot. The focus required for getting inside other people’s heads during his “day job” served as a secret weapon for getting inside his own mind to achieve seemingly superhuman feats. When asked what’s next on his busy calendar, Pearlman says he is only getting started and plans to keep pushing the limits both physically and mentally.
The waiter seemed to materialize out of nowhere, again asking if we were ready to order. I’d been completely engrossed in our conversation, so a frantic assessment of the menu was suddenly underway, my eyes jumping from item to item. My right hand scratched my chin nervously and my brows lightly furrowed as I prepared to speak. Pearlman interrupted with a knowing smile and all too casually said, “I know you’re torn between the chicken club and salmon but trust your heart and go with the French dip.” He was right, and at that moment, I had officially become a believer.

Born in London, the pioneer aviator landed the first ever plane in St. Barths in 1946 into a field full of livestock that would later become the island’s efficient airport now named “Rémy de Haenen.” The island’s magnetic allure and high-brow visitors, including David and Peggy Rockefeller and part of the Rothschild family, inspired him to purchase land including the rocky promontory that jutted out into St. Jean Bay. In 1953, Rémy set about transforming his home into what would become the islands’ first bed and

breakfast to welcome his friends and family. In the 1960’s and 70’s his glamorous guests included the likes of Greta Garbo, Howard Hughes, Gore Vidal and Robert Mitchum, with a number of them and their friends also buying houses locally and accelerating the lively property market which exists to this day.
The Matthews Family: Preserving the Legacy
After Rémy de Haenen retired from the project, David and Jane Matthews decided to purchase the property after viewing it from a sailboat in St. Jean Bay and falling in love with it, despite having no hospitality experience. The Matthews family agreed to keep most of the original Rémy objects and heirlooms - including examples of Mr. de Haenen’s Father’s artwork - while mixing it with modernity and contents from their home.
In 2014 the Matthews family invited Oetker Collection and the Oetker family to co-invest and partner. Ushering in a new era, the hotel underwent a complete renovation in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. In 2019, Eden Rock –St. Barths reopened its doors to guests following a multi-million-dollar renovation that unveiled new and redesigned suites and rooms, a gym, spa and pools. Today, Eden Rock – St. Barths continues to nurture the freedoms and the fun, continuously seeking new ideas and then investing in the delivery of the best of them. Whether it be Chef
Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s gastronomic creations, the commissioning of new works by established and emerging artists, innovative exclusive capsule collaborations or the expansion of Eden Spa and Eden Rock Boutique, the hotel continues to evolve for its ever-loyal guests and friends.
Rates for Eden Rock – St. Barths start from €1,450 (currently approx. $1,554) per night on a B&B basis. For more information, visit oetkercollection.com/hotels/eden-rock-st-barths/

Embrace the Chill Inspiring Winter Destinations in Europe
As the days grow shorter and a crisp chill fills the air, Europe transforms into a magical winter wonderland. Snow-covered landscapes, festive markets and cozy atmospheres make it an ideal destination for a winter escape. Among the many enchanting places to explore, Zurich, Stockholm and Innsbruck set themselves apart. Embark on a journey through these three European cities, each offering a diverse and memorable experience.
Nestled at the heart of northern Switzerland, Zurich is a vibrant lakeside city bursting with urban sophistication and natural beauty, making it an excellent choice for a winter escape. From December through February, Zurich undergoes a stunning transformation where snow glistens the landscape, captivating locals and visitors alike.
• Zurich’s Celebrated Christmas Markets: The city’s nine Christmas markets are a true extravaganza of holiday tidings and cheer. Stroll through the Niederdorf section of the old town to experience the city’s oldest market and immerse yourself in a joyful wonderland, with twinkling lights, charming stalls and the scent of mulled wine, fondue and roasted chestnuts filling the air. Christkindlimarkt is the largest indoor holiday market in Europe, located in the central train station. It is particularly famous for its spectacular 50-foot-tall Christmas tree adorned with Swarovski crystals and many stalls showcasing handmade crafts and delicious treats.
• Alpine Day Trips: If you are a winter sports enthusiast, Zurich offers easy access to some of Switzerland’s best ski resorts, such as chic Davos-Klosters, beautiful Arosa Lenzerheide or the family-friendly Flumserberg and Andermatt. Enjoy an exhilarating day on the slopes and return to Zurich for a cozy evening.
• Activities on Lake Zurich: Bundle up and take a scenic stroll along the shores of Lake Zurich. Weather permitting, you might even catch a glimpse of the Alps in the distance, creating a stunning backdrop for your winter adventure or take a boat tour of the lake where you can visit the endearing town of Rapperswil.
• Traditional Swiss Delights: Hearty Swiss cuisine tastes its best in the winter. Visit one of Zurich’s traditional restaurants, Kronenhalle, and indulge in a signature dish of tender veal cooked with mushrooms, cream and wine, served with a side of tasty rösti. Warm up with a traditional Swiss fondue. Melted cheese, crusty bread and a cozy atmosphere are the perfect combination in winter.
Stockholm, Sweden’s vibrant capital, takes on a special appeal during the winter season. Known for its rich history and thriving culture, Stockholm does not slow down in the winter, and snow-draped streets transform the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods into scenes from a fairytale.
• Visit the Old Town: No stay in Stockholm is complete without a stroll around Gamla Stan. Its cobblestone streets and colorful 17th and 18th-century buildings shine in winter. One of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities, you will find pleasant bistros, cultural sites, diverse shopping and a handful of hip cocktail bars.
• Take a Boat Ride: Stockholm is comprised of 14 islands and can be seen by boat even in the winter. Take advantage of the city’s hop-on, hop-off boat operators for a unique way to visit Stockholm’s top attractions, such as the VASA Museum, the Royal Palace and the city’s idyllic neighborhoods.
• Day Trip to Drottningholm Palace: The royal family’s home is just a short

distance from Stockholm. This wonderfully preserved 16th-century palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its grounds and large portions of the palace are open to the public.
• Nordic Winter Swimming and Saunas: Partake in the Nordic tradition of cold-water swimming followed by a sauna. This beloved tradition is part of the culture, and there are plenty of opportunities to dive in and spa like a local.
• Explore Local Gastronomy: Seek out the city’s food markets and introduce yourself to fresh, local delicacies. Visit the Östermalm district, where you will fi nd one of the world’s best food markets, Östermalm Saluhall, featuring some of the best seafood, produce and meat products. At the same time, Söderhallarna features a fantastic cheese shop and a world-class fi shmonger. For something more structured, plenty of local food tours focus on local purveyors of typical food and drink choices.
Tucked away in the Tyrolean Alps, Innsbruck, Austria, is a delightful winter destination that combines its long cultural history with the ways of Alpine life and world-class winter sports facilities.
• Skiing, Snowboarding and other Winter Adventures: Innsbruck is a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. Surrounded by terrific ski resorts like Nordkette, Patscherkofel and Axamer Lizum, you can hit the slopes regardless of your ability. Access to the Olympic Bobsled tracks is also a popular attraction for thrill-seekers. The city hosted the Winter Olympics twice for a reason.
• Stroll Altstadt: Innsbruck’s Old Town, lined with pastel-hued buildings, is a testament to the Habsburg Empire and is still magnificent today. The area is bustling with restaurants and boutiques, and getting lost on its cobblestone streets is easy. Here, you will also fi nd much of the city’s cul-
tural heritage, such as the iconic Golden Roof and one of Europe’s famous Christmas markets.
• Savor Local Cuisine: Tyrolean cuisine offers hearty fl avors and is still heavily influenced by traditions. Be sure to try Tyrolean specialties such as Käsespätzle, egg noodles combined with local melted cheese, onions and fresh greens, or Kaspressknödel, traditional cheese dumplings topped off with a glass of Glühwein, a typical regional mulled wine served during the winter holiday season. Opt for a slice of Sachertorte at Cafe Sacher Innsbruck or Apple Strudel at nearby Strudel Cafe Kroll for a decadent treat.
• Nordkette Cable Car: Nordkette is often called the Jewel of the Alps. For a truly exceptional winter experience, take the cable car where you ascend Alpine peaks and will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the snow-covered Alps and the city below.
• Visit Historic Palaces: Just outside the town center is Ambras Castle, a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture and the former home of Archduke Ferdinand II. The majestic Hopfburg, a former royal palace, is one of Austria’s three most notable buildings, and it now houses an impressive art museum. For winter sports fans and modern architecture enthusiasts, do not miss the Zaha Hadid-designed Bergisel Ski Jump, built in 2001. It stands tall over Innsbruck and offers panoramic city views.
Europe in winter is a magical destination, and Zurich, Stockholm and Innsbruck offer unforgettable experiences that capture the season’s essence. Whether you seek the charm of Christmas markets, the thrill of winter sports or simply the beauty of snow-covered landscapes, these cities have it all.

Is Boca the Nation’s Newest Hotspot?
BY MARGARET BASTICK LUCE / MEG SHEA, COPY EDITOR
The roar of the crowd was louder than anything ever heard on campus. Fans were screaming out of their dorm rooms, loud cheers at the TV, seemingly the whole university and the entire nation had their eyes squarely fi xed on Boca Raton, Florida. More specifi cally, the idyllic palm-tree-lined campus of Florida Atlantic University, which is known as its fi rst and largest of the university’s campuses.
The FAU Owls basketball team, not known to many before a few months ago, soared to the prestigious Final Four. However, the real victory has come not just for the Owls but for the city that houses them, Boca Raton. This was the fi rst time sports fans and even non-sports fans looked at a city they had only heard joked about during “Seinfeld” as a real, full-fl edged and very attractive place to live.
The truth is even before the Final Four, Boca was
already well on its way to being a tech hub, with both established companies and startups moving into the city in recent years. To grasp the whole story, you need to look at the numbers and not just the number of residents. The Boca real estate market is booming with new apartment complexes, condos and brand-new developments. Bonnie Heatzig is the director of luxury sales for Douglas Elliman and has specialized in luxury homes in Boca for more than 20 years. She said that every day, she is seeing more people move to Boca Raton. Some are heading to Florida for lower taxes, and others are seeking a better climate. She’s seeing new buyers from New York, the Midwest and more recently, an influx of new residents from California.
“Some of the wealthiest and most established people from those states are calling me and asking me to fi nd them homes in Boca,” said Heatzig. Even Heatzig’s Instagram page shows the hustle of Boca. “I could be out every night in Boca try-
ing a new restaurant or dining at restaurants like Trattoria Romana or New York Prime, both top restaurant choices. Days can be fi lled by taking in the wide selection of special exhibitions at one of Boca’s premier art galleries or taking a break from showing properties on a Saturday morning to play a round of golf at The Boca Raton. It is no exaggeration that there is now so much to do here for all ages and interests,” Heatzig said.
What makes this place so hot? Exactly that, the heat. “Many of the families moving here want the year-round warm weather. I am moving people to Boca every single day,” said relocation expert and owner of Good Greek Moving Spero Georgedakis. “The truth is, all of Florida is hot right now, but Boca might be growing the fastest.” So, while the FAU Owls will try to make the Final Four again next year, the seeds have already been sewn for Boca’s success. The city has found a winning combination that many locations can only dream about.

AshramHigh Above the Pacific
BY MARGARET BASTICK LUCE
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Oops, I forgot my bathing suit!” Swimming among other Ashram guests, Yarrow, one of the guides says, “Hey Margaret, you’re at the Ashram, no worries!”
Putting on an oversized vintage shirt, I jumped in. Yarrow was the quintessential ambassador of California with a beautiful, coconut tan and an energy that could calm the ocean. Surrounded by newfound friends, both teams knew I had a sporty spark. After a minor tussle, I chose my team. Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” bumping competitively loud, we played with childlike enthusiasm for the win.
Reflecting on my very first trip to the Ashram some ten years ago, it was clear that I wasn’t looking for a fluffy place serving cocktails by the pool. My flight from Florida to LAX was a breeze and getting picked up by my long-time friend was a treat. Hopping in the passenger seat, I shot a quick “Thelma and Louise” glance indicating my readiness for this adventure. Intentionally planning the afternoon and night before my inaugural Ashram stay, we checked into the lovely Beverly Wilshire Hotel, a wise choice. Bags were thrown down and we went straight to their fantastic steam room to shed the layer of grime collected from a long flight. A little tip...this is always a great spot to check into when arriving in Southern California.
The next morning after some yummy coffee and a stop at our favorite juice spot, we headed to The Ashram in Calabasas. It was an easy, scenic drive with a hint of anticipation. A lovely spot nestled in the hills, we took a stroll about the property and my accommodations for the week. After meeting a few of the staff, I bid my friend goodbye with a turning stomach and sheepish grin. I will never forget the laughter that poured out of my copy editor and friend, Meg when I announced, “I feel like I am being checked into rehab.” She assured me I would survive and likely want to come back for more.
In the words of the founders, “The Ashram was founded more than 50 years ago by Swedish health and wellness pioneers Catharina Hedberg and Anne-Marie Bennström. From the very beginning the vision was to introduce healthy eating, physical exercise and a connection to nature in order to cleanse the body, still the mind and nourish the soul. It was the first ‘boot camp’ retreat with a simple but effective formula that has kept its essence throughout the years while still continually progressing to provide guests with a fun, challenging and innovative experience.”
The Ashram has continued to be my go-to spot in California. Whether looking to shed that extra six pounds that showed up uninvited or delve deeper into the journey of a lost loved one, the care and love I have received are hard to put into words. Spending time with my Swedish sister and founder, Cat is always a bright spot. Her compassion, choice of words and calmness are the essence of the experience. Born with the genetics of an athlete, I have always known I would get bored sitting around.
Mental health, knowing what I need and my visits and conversations with Cat have provided growth. Whether it be frolicking, taking in a hike or sharing a conversation that lands with deep meaning is the love that you experience from the guides, each bringing their unique gifts and light. What happens in the mountains, stays in the mountains, which is a metaphor for life. With every step you take and every mile you cover, you move through your afflictions, those known and unknown.
Movement is not about avoidance but a conduit to healing because God, guides and the universe walk with us; they have us. During my stay at the Ashram, I recall the words my friend once said to me: “You have always magically moved through pieces.” Without a need for more words, we both acknowledged it is easier to move forward than stay stuck.
Joy, laughter and sacrifice are all a part of this adventure. Please leave your negativity at the door…or ask me and I will share some recommendations for the mere mortals. The luxury of care and compassion supersede the luxury of amenities that some may rattle on about. When you feel loved and cared for, there can be no price.

Top New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lyle Leipziger
Opens Park Avenue Office
After over 20 years of being named by Castle Connolly Private Health Partners, LLC (CCPHP) as one of America’s Top Doctors, and by “New York Magazine” as one of its best plastic surgeons, Dr. Lyle Leipziger has finally opened an office in NYC in addition to his state-of-the-art Great Neck, Long Island practice.
It is, of course, impressive for a doctor to head a division in a top hospital, but presiding at two institutions carries major gravitas. Dr. Leipziger is chief of plastic surgery at both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. His surgical skill, artful eye and ability to significantly transform patients with enough subtlety for results to look natural have earned him a reputation as a “go-to’’ esthetic doctor on Long Island. Now, the board-certified plastic surgeon, who also offers non-surgical options to combat aging and improve his patients’ appearance, is available to city dwellers, including those who have previously trekked east to his flagship office. We caught up with the esteemed surgeon and asked about the expansion.
What made you pick this time to open in Manhattan?
I’ve considered opening in Manhattan for years, but it came to a point where I had so many people driving in from Manhattan, as well as long-term patients who became empty nesters and had moved to the city, that I was being asked continually about a New York presence, so I felt the time was right.
How has the response been?
I was surprised at how quickly we became busy with existing patients as well as new ones. People who used to take car services out to the office were so pleased at being able to stroll to the new office at Park and 66th Street, as many live nearby.

What about your approach is unique, or sets you apart from your colleagues?
I’m dedicated to the entire process with a patient, from an initial consultation to at least a year post-op. It’s a journey that we take together with very specific goals, and I see them more than some people feel is necessary, but my staff and I have a real focus on attention to personal detail, so everything is individualized and nothing is cookie-cutter. I’m meticulous and never leave the operating room until I am completely satisfied with the results. I want every case to be my best one. I also haven’t jumped on the social media bandwagon because my strong practice is built on word of mouth, loyalty and trust.
Is there anything new in plastic surgery that you are excited about?
There are always new ideas, but I don’t jump on every one of them until I’m convinced of their effectiveness. The latest techniques need to be vetted and tested before I implement them because safety is paramount while achieving optimal results. I like fat grafting and think it will become more and more common as the techniques are fine-tuned. Almost every face-lift I do has fat grafting to balance out volume loss, and because of its potential effect of boosting the quality of skin.
Any new non-surgical techniques or procedures that you are using?
I like things that help maintain and amp up the results of surgery. We employ both ultrasound and radio frequency devices to tighten patients’ skin. These treatments are particularly effective on the lower face. For fine lines and wrinkles, we use laser technology and have an array of fillers and neurotoxins. All of these non-surgical techniques can also be used to improve the appearance of patients who are not yet ready for surgery.
What do you like to do in your leisure time?
I visit museums, both locally and while I’m traveling. I have always been intrigued by sculpture, and I spend so much time focusing on the structure and appearance of faces and bodies
Where do you get your inspiration?
My patients themselves inspire me. Each has a unique story, and there is nothing more satisfying than making a significant change in their lives that, in turn, improves their quality of life and increases their self-esteem.

Bombay Sapphire announces the continuation of the brand’s “Saw This, Made This” campaign by partnering with legendary fashion designer and creative visionary Christian Siriano to create a cocktail couture collection. Renowned for his boundary-pushing designs and inclusive approach to fashion, Siriano took inspiration from iconic Bombay Sapphire gin cocktails to create a French 75-inspired haute couture gown, which took center stage at the brand’s Spring/Summer 2024 NYFW show at The Pierre Hotel in New York City, as well as a gin cocktail attire capsule collection to release in time for the holiday season.
Siriano’s French 75-inspired gown was designed with flourishes that transmute the celebratory cocktail’s zip of bubbles, the tang of lemon juice and bright notes of gin. Created from champagne-tinged accents and with Bombay Sapphire’s iconic, blue-tinged bottle in mind, the gown is infused with custom Bombay Sapphire-dyed fabrics and harkens back to the color profi le and effervescence of the Bombay French 75.
To bring the ethos of the collection to everyone and inspire people to experiment with their own creativity and style, Siriano will be releasing a limited-edition capsule collection to follow the French 75-inspired gown. Literally and fi guratively embodying cocktail party couture, the capsule collection will take inspiration from three iconic gin cocktails - the Bombay Sapphire Gin & Tonic, Martini and Collins - and be available just in time for the holiday season. The perfect gift for fashion and spirits lovers alike, the collection will be available to purchase this autumn on ChristianSiriano. com.
Marking the continuation of the Bombay Sapphire “Saw This, Made This” campaign launched by acclaimed fi lm Director Baz Luhrmann last year, the cocktail-inspired collection is designed to push the boundaries of fashion and encourage people to see the creative inspiration that exists all around them.
As the newly appointed creative catalyst of the campaign, Siriano stated, “As a designer, I fi nd endless excitement in exploring disruptive ways
to construct garments and challenge myself creatively. Partnering with Bombay Sapphire for the ‘Saw This, Made This’ campaign has allowed me to design a collection that transforms classic cocktail culture into fashion. By continuing to explore my creative boundaries and fi nd inspiration in the unexpected, in this case, the silhouette of a French 75 cocktail, I hope to inspire others to discover uncharted territories of their imagination.”
“As a brand that has always championed all forms of artistic expression, we’ve loved working with Christian to unlock a new form of creative inspiration for his designs,” said Jaime Keller, brand director of Bombay Sapphire. “‘Saw This, Made This’ has always been about fi nding new and unique points of inspiration and Christian has shown that imagination shows no limits and that visual prompts can turn into tangible, beautiful creations. With the release of this partnership, we hope that audiences will tap into their own creativity and uncover the inspiration that permeates the world around them.”

Sleepwear Made Luxurious by Gazalli
FASHION SPOTLIGHT
Photos courtesy of Gazalli
In the world of fashion, where trends come and go like the seasons, Gazal Nissar, the visionary founder of Gazalli, dared to dream differently. With no prior experience in the fashion industry, she embarked on a remarkable journey to create a sleepwear brand that transcends fashion trends, offering timeless elegance and unparalleled luxury. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, inspired by her mother’s unwavering support and encouragement.
Nissar’s path to founding Gazalli began during her international career in HR, as she traveled across Europe and Asia. These experiences ignited her desire for sleepwear and loungewear which encapsulates her belief in the power of relaxation and self-care. Cherishing moments of retreat from the daily hustle, Gazalli was born with a mission to infuse everyday life with a touch of luxury, making bedtime a dream and lounging an art form.
In 2019, Gazalli’s vision took shape, driven by a commitment to prioritize people and the planet over profit. Gazal embarked on a three-year journey of self-learning with challenges abounded, from sourcing fabrics to convincing manufacturers to collaborate
with a small start-up. Her amateur sketches served as a starting point to transform dreams into reality, all while navigating the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, Gazal resilience and unwavering faith prevailed.
Tragedy struck when her beloved mother fell critically ill and passed away before Gazalli’s launch. Gazal contemplated burying her dream but instead chose to honor her mother’s legacy by bringing Gazalli to life. It became more than a brand; it became a tribute to strong, selfless women who inspire generations.
Every Gazalli creation is crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail in the silk haven of Suzhou, renowned for its silk production. This commitment to quality ensures that every piece exudes comfort and luxury. The design process, however, takes place in the heart of Sydney, keeping the brand both local and sustainable, while offering truly versatile and multi-purpose garments.
One of the brand’s signature pieces is the iconic Malka Reversible Robe. Versatility is at the heart of this design. On one side, it embraces you in Gazalli’s signature print, a mesmerizing blend of floral fantasies and subtle hues that exude timeless charm. Flip it to reveal the enchanting sapphire blue satin finish, a symbol of sophistication and allure. The Malka Reversible Robe is a testament to Gazalli’s dedication to making women feel not just comfortable but also effortlessly stylish. For those seeking the epitome of indulgence, there’s the Coco Robe.
Another standout piece in the Gazalli collection is the Dee Camisole Set. Crafted from the finest silk, this set is a masterpiece of both style and comfort. The camisole, adorned with sensuous back straps, allows for an array of different styles, adding a touch of sensuality to the design. The matching shorts provide a perfect balance between allure and relaxation. Whether it’s worn as sleepwear or as a luxurious lounging set, the Dee Camisole Set embodies the Gazalli ethos of blending elegance with comfort.
Beyond comfort and style, Gazalli believes that even garments that feel liberating should also be conscious of their environmental impact. That’s why their nightwear is handmade and produced in limited quantities, reducing waste, carbon footprint and exposure to harmful chemicals.
Gazalli’s commitment to making a positive impact extends beyond fashion. The brand donates 2% of its total sales to support organizations dedicated to empowering women and children through sustainable social and educational initiatives, fostering independence and creative skills. The Jewish Influence of Art in the Early 20th Century
BY ALEXANDER HANKIN
82 MANN ABOUT TOWN • OCTOBER 2023 ARTS & AFFAIRS
Standing in the Musee Nissim de Camondo recently, I couldn’t stop thinking of the Jewish family who built this collection. The Camondo family was dedicated to French patronage and demonstrated this through their collection and valor in the First World War. They devoted themselves to France and the country’s ideals of equality and freedom. A nation, that in the end, would hand them over to the Nazis. The Camondo were not alone in their advancement of art patronage in the early part of the 20th century. Jewish families like the Reinarch, Ephrussi and Rothschilds contributed to France and left great collections for future generations. The early 1900s also saw the rise and contribution of post-impressionist and modern art masters who were also of Jewish descent.
Amedeo Modigliani, a counterpart of Picasso and Cezanne, was one of the great expressionist painters of the early 20th-century. Modigliani started painting at a young age, and unlike many Jews living in Eastern Europe, his family, having settled generations earlier in Livorno, Italy, faced little antisemitism. His first real success was “The Jewess,” (1908) which had similar melancholy themes to that of Picasso’s blue period works. Modigliani’s style quickly changed after moving to Paris, abandoning his early work, and trading his bourgeois upbringing for a bohemian lifestyle. Modigliani’s work falls into two categories, nudes and portraits. His style became known for its melancholy nature and elongated features, most notably the necks and masklike faces, as seen in “Portrait of Lunia Czechowska” (1919). Even with these vanguard features, Modigliani was able to capture the expressions of his subjects. His nude work was a departure from classical and mythological paintings and contained the overt sexuality of his subjects, like in “Reclining Nude” (1917). His work with nudes was thought to be salacious and scandalous. Modigliani’s heavy use of drugs and alcohol aided in his succumbing to tuberculosis in 1920 at the height of his career.
Chaïm Soutine came from a shtetl in what is present-day Belarus. A great expressionist painter, Soutine often looked to Rembrandt van Rijn and other well-known old masters as references for his work. Though many historical references exist, his has a more personal emotional factor than his predecessor’s work ever did. Having experienced persecution growing up as a Jew in Eastern Europe, Soutine’s work had a deep, personal and often darker tone than many of his Western European contemporaries. Soutine’s paintings of animal carcasses are some of his most emotionally laden works. “Carcass of Beef,” (1925) was inspired by a work of Rembrandt, but in Soutine’s work, you feel the emotion of the work, a crying out of pain that comes from the slaughtered animal that only Soutine’s mastery was able to portray. During the Nazi occupation, Soutine went into hiding to escape deportation. Unfortunately, due to health complications, he left the safety of his hiding place to seek medical attention and died during surgery in 1943. Soutine’s life and career were cut short.
Marc Chagall grew up in the Russian Empire. Because Jews were denied education in Russia, he attended a Jewish school and learned Hebrew. While many Jewish artists were encouraged to hide their Jewishness, Chagall embraced his faith and identity, making them the central theme of his work. His style had elements of both expressionism and cubism. His work soon gained prominence for his portrayal of Jewish life, both in the biblical nature and depiction t of the life of Jews in Eastern Europe, like in “The Drover and The Cattle Dealer” (1912). Though a celebrated painter, the rise of Nazism in Germany caused his work to be slowly discredited with only the help of the Museum of Modern Art was Chagall and his family able to escape Nazi-occupied France. After the war, Chagall returned to France and continued making art until he died in 1985. At the time of his death, he was the last remaining artist of his generation, outliving all his contemporaries.
Modigliani, Soutine and Chagall remain some of the greatest examples of Jewish artists who shaped the early 20th century. They embraced movements that were initially closed off to Jews and expanded their art form, paving the way for generations to build upon. While so many Jewish collectors shaped the art landscape of this time, it was these artists who had a lasting impression and were at the heart of this time in history.

Hagari is an award-winning artist whose works have been shown in prominent museums around the world. At the center of his project is an expres sionless protagonist shown from the back of his head — which is shaved — and a projected face void of all facial features. His attire is worn frontside-back, and his movements are reversed.
“The scenarios portray a mundane existence in a world whose marks have been erased,” Hagari said. “Books have no titles or words; photographs are blanked out; labels are removed; we are left with data. It generates a binary structure: backward and forward, front and rear, serious and funny.”
The video project is shot entirely in New York City as the Tel Aviv artist was isolated and stayed in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The character, constrained by limited expression and space, continues to navigate daily routines. The faceless protagonist found new relevance with ev eryone around wearing masks, concealing their faces and, inevitably, their facial expressions.
ZAZ Corner features a digitally activated screen with a rotating series of images and videos that in dividually morph, bringing the art to life for public street viewing. The “In Between” series will fea ture a rotation of artists and themes that are interspersed between commercial messages every two to three minutes.
“Although New York City has been in a shutdown mode due to the pandemic with galleries and museums closed to visitors, ZAZ Corner continues to bring digital art to the public for viewing safely while social distancing and wearing a mask,” Charney said. “The ‘In Between’ collection will feature artwork on a continuous, ongoing basis with inspiring themes and images. Even though museums continue to be shuttered, our intent is that the show must go on and the art can never stop.”
