October 2022, the Board of Manly Golf Club appointed Craig Parry Design.

“The initial brief was a general review and recommendation of the course, incorporating recommendations with regards to fairway bunkering.”

“Consulted on aspects of course design and playability from time to time where input is required, with the intent and brief to retain the established design intent where practical from Thomson Perrett.”

It is a privilege to be asked to provide you with feedback in relation to fairway bunkers at Manly Golf Club.

The golf course has stood the test of time. However, it still has many untapped opportunities for improving the golf course for the future as well as keeping the WOW factor that you already have.

My design philosophy is to keep the golf course in the same style that exists, whilst making small strategic changes to allow golfers to be rewarded for hitting a well-placed shot.

A majority of golfers have a fear of bunkers and especially fairway bunkers. Low handicap golfers don’t have this fear as they rarely visit the bunkers in comparison. With the removal of unnecessary fairway bunkers and strategic placement of new fairway bunkers will test everyone’s game. The low handicap golfer can be assured that they will be tested more than exists today.

Touring and playing different golf courses all over the world has given me the experience and understanding of how golf courses should be designed both aesthetically and functionally. With this knowledge on how to develop a more playable, appealing and maintainable course.

I believe these simple improvements to the course will give a feeling of satisfaction to the membership.

BRIEF AS OUR PER MEETING ON 13TH MAY 2022 1. 27 Fairway bunkers, bunker strategy plan.

2. Native grasses and encroachment into playing areas.

VISION 1. Having the double bunkers or more on holes 2,3,5,6,8,10,13,17 & 18 does not make a great deal of sense. Reducing the amount of fairway bunkers and maintaining a championship course is paramount.

2. Removing lomandra from playing areas of the golf course would be welcomed by all golfers.

Propose remove both fairway bunkers and re-level fairway using sandstone blocks before the riparian zone.

3rd hole par 5 461m 445m 412m 348m Current tee shot is too narrow at the end of the fairway. Reshape fairway bunker and widen fairway tempting golfers to hit the tee shot as close as possible to the hazard. This will give an opportunity to possibly reach the green with the 2nd shot for the longer hitter, whilst also giving more options with the 2nd shot layup with the removal of the left fairway bunker 45m from green.

3rd hole approach shot.

Propose removing the left-hand side fairway bunker at the end of the fairway and reshape with soft undulations. As it is not visible from tee side of the fairway. This will give more options on playing the hole and bringing the hazard more into play. Right fairway bunker top edge tongue to be reshaped.

Propose reshaping both fairway bunkers to entice players to use driver from the tee. This will give a wider landing zone for all golfers. Possibility to lengthen hole by 10m.

Propose removing both fairway bunkers and reshaping with soft undulations.

This will encourage golfers to play a longer club from the tee. Green side bunker poorly positioned, consider relocating closer to the green.

Propose adding a fairway bunker on the left-hand side for hole strategy, encouraging golfers to hit the tee shot short of each of the bunkers. This will stop golfers walking to the practice range via the 10th hole fairway. 1st righthand side bunker removed. 2nd right-hand side fairway bunker reshaped.

Reshape first two fairway bunkers. Giving golfers a clearer indication of where to hit the tee shot. Further bunkers on left reshaped into soft undulations.
