MANI HOTA DESIGN PORTFOLIO

2019-2023

B-Arch 4th Year

One of the first few things that one learns about architecture is scale, as everything must be to scale. It determines one’s building type- from monumental to miniature and everything in between. Even an incremental shift within the scale can lead to massive differences, each with their own implication. The projects covered in this portfolio each correspond to a different scale, ranging from the built (urban) to a unit (a room), each with their own prerequisites and set of criteria that had to be fulfilled. Thereby elucidating the multiplicity of design and the range of possibilities it beholds.

The only constant amidst this chasm of possibilities and its ever changing dynamic is none other than the human, who is often lost in the splendor of design. By bringing ‘the human’ back in our plans and designs, we create much more sustainable, holistic, sensorial and habitable spaces.

Type: Sub-arterial Road (30m -80m)

Width: 42m (Right Of Way, ROW)

Speed: 50km/hr (HMV)

Length of segment: 2km

Landmarks: Sachdeva Public School

The goal was to document both LHS and RHS of the segment, which involved a series of site visits to conduct on-site stakeholder interviews, do activity mapping, safety audit, and finally propose interventions to make it more accessible and pedestrian friendly. A series of guidelines like UTTIPEC, RCI, ITDP were referred for the interventions proposed.

CHITTI GREEN HOMES

ALWAL, HYDERABAD

Site Area: 1200 sq.m

Permissible Ground Coverage: 25%

Permissible FAR: 1.25

Permissible Height: 18m

Achieved Built-up Area: 1500 sq.m

This is an ongoing project in Hyderabad by a start-up company, ‘Chitti Green Homes’, that is built using primarily mud blocks and RCC frame structure. The developers are also incorporating waste management techniques that include compost pit and treatment of sewage water for recycling purposes. Given Hyderabad’s water problem, the building also houses a rainwater harvesting system. As the graphic design intern, my role was to make the seemingly new project at the region, more aesthetically appealing to the masses for marketing purposes. Also, I would often go for site visits and shadow the project manager to learn more about site planning and management.

THE VILLAGE SCHOOL

MEWAT, HARYANA

Site Area: 25734 sq.m

Permissible Ground Coverage: 35%

Derived Landscape Area: 7618 sq.m

Permissible FAR: 1.5

Achieved Built-up Area: 20407 sq.m

The project aimed at designing a Net-Zero school in collaboration with Orphans In Need (NGO). Mewat lacks access to education (indicated by the high drop-out rates of girls as the nearest school is at least 10 km away) and healthcare. The school was designed to foster such community needs, conveyed through its design and material language. The school would accommodate student capacity of approximately 2000 including additional 100 faculty and admin staff.

Designing for the school was a team effort wherein my contribution (primarily) was landscape design.

03

Landscape of the site was designed holistically. The aim was to maintain the ecosystem of the site, by planting all local species, keeping in mind the birds, insects and animals of the site. This ensured a symbiotic relation between all inhabitants of the space.

Permissible Ground Coverage: 55%

Permissible height of the structure: 16m

Permissible FAR: 1.5

Achieved Built-up Area: 11775 sq.m

This architectural design project, a team collaboration, consists of a banquet hall with provisional lodging, accompanied by a Quick Service Restaurant. It provides indoor and outdoor areas to host various events catering to different occupancy capacity and ambiance. The varied program brief arrives from the client’s requirement of ensuring 300+ days of revenue generation through business ventures housed on site. Therefore the model focuses on ensuring continuous activity through various business schemes like QSR, subletting hotel rooms when not in use, cloud kitchen etc.

SUPERNOVA PENTHOUSE

The goal of this project was to design the interiors along with all the necessary services for a luxurious penthouse at Supernova for a family of four. The aim was to meet all the criteria set by the client and stay under budget, all the while developing a working knowledge of different materials and services of a building. It was a team effort which came with long discussions on design decisions, calling vendors to formulate BOQs and making the required GFCs and plans.

STUDIO ACOUSTIC DESIGN

The aim was to provide the studio with acoustic treatment which falls under a budget of four lakh INR. The acoustic treatment had to take care of both sound absorption as well as reflection, while minimizing sound transmission. Especially since the closest neighbors reside approximately 10 meters away from the studio. The acoustic treatment was carried out using corner bass traps, ceiling mounted traps as well as flat acoustic panels (diffusers and absorbers) for the walls. A combination of reflection and absorption panels was implemented to fulfill the requirements of the studio.
