Our Vision

Manhattan Country School envisions its students as future leaders whose shared experiences in learning and activism inspire them to champion excellence and justice, compassion and peace, and the rights of all people to racial, economic, gender, environmental, and educational equity.

Our Mission

Reflecting the vision of the Civil Rights movement, Manhattan Country School teaches students in a community with no racial majority and broad economic diversity. Our goals for students are academic excellence, intellectual freedom, social awareness, self-confidence, and firsthand knowledge of the natural world. MCS is unique among NYC independent schools in having a 180-acre working farm in the Catskill Mountains that is integral to the curriculum and a sliding scale for tuition.

Message from

Director Michèle Solá As the 2013-2014 school year came to a close, I was reminded of just how important Manhattan Country School’s mission continues to be. Founded in 1966 with a vision of educational equality for students from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, MCS continues to serve as a shining example, even as the country’s demographics change dramatically and longitudinal research at UCLA validates our mission. Today, an MCS education, grounded in the principles of justice, equality, and nonviolent resolution of conflict feels more and more essential as we witness communities near and far pulled apart by racism, economic inequalities, youthful migrations across U.S. borders, climate change, and historic divisions that have never been resolved. Thankfully, times like these also highlight the values and skills we teach about making change, building bridges, and finding a common ground. I see these values and skills at work as 4-5s make trips to classmates’ homes to discover different cultures and ways of living, and as 7th and 8th graders travel to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of injustices such as the troubling school-toprison pipeline. MCS has a trained faculty and a time-tested curriculum, building on the diversity of experiences MCS students bring through the courtyard doors and consistent with our democratic purpose. As we grow closer to our 50th anniversary, MCS is executing a strategic plan to ensure that the impact we’ve had for nearly five decades endures. In 2016, we will be moving into a bigger building and will begin the four-year process of doubling enrollment. The MCS experience can be shared with twice as many families. To design our new space, we’re working with architects who are experienced in schools. We’re also engaging faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and others in the MCS community for suggestions on how to ensure that what makes MCS so rich carries on to our new home. This ambitious plan to move and grow wouldn’t be possible without the diversity, wisdom, philanthropic support, and engagement of people like you in the MCS community. This annual report is our way of acknowledging and thanking every person who has helped us along our journey. Your contributions support our commitment to progressive education and an equitable tuition program that fosters unparalleled cultural and economic diversity. Gratefully,

Michèle Solá

At a time when New York City has the most segregated schools in the country, Manhattan Country School continues to be one of the most racially and socioeconomically diverse.

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:

Racial & Economic Diversity Since its founding in 1966, Manhattan Country School has been committed to educating a student population that reflects true racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity. This diversity is sustained by going beyond the notion of financial aid to offer a sliding-scale tuition policy that is rooted in the idea that a family’s financial commitment should be equal to its financial resources. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund supports: • A sliding-scale tuition policy that makes it possible for families to pay tuition based on their means—which is a critical component of our mission and underwrites the rich diversity of our community. • A deliberate curriculum that takes full advantage of the school’s racial, cultural, and economic diversity. • Diversity that provides the basis for exploring multiple perspectives throughout our curriculum. • MCS’ position as an example for other schools interested in supporting student diversity through a sliding-scale tuition model. Our school is sought after by school founders and board members as well as economists and policy makers across the country for guidance in this area.

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:

Progressive Education/ Teacher Training Manhattan Country School has been in the vanguard of progressive education since 1966. Each year, as part of our public mission in New York City and at the MCS Farm, we train student teachers from the city’s top teaching schools, such as Bank Street, Teachers College, Sarah Lawrence, and City College. Over the past 48 years, MCS has trained more than 900 teachers and attracted nearly 5,000 educational observers and visitors from across the country and the world. Our legacy of developing curriculum that addresses diversity, sustainability, social justice, and partnerships with public schools earned us the designation of host of the Progressive Education Network’s national conference in 2015. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund helps our teachers to: • Enhance curriculum, creating a richer academic program for students. • Lead professional development workshops and conferences. • Train future teachers to design and teach innovative curriculum rooted in the principles of progressive education, multiculturalism, and social and environmental justice. Student and assistant teachers who train at MCS gain unique experiences and then go on to work at public, charter, and independent schools in New York City and across the country.

Our legacy

of developing curriculum that addresses diversity, sustainability, social justice, and partnerships with public schools earned us the designation of host of the Progressive Education Network’s national conference in 2015. 7

“[MCS Farm] is not just a dairy farm, not just a vegetable farm. We produce all our own power via solar, and all our spinning and weaving is done with fleece from our sheep’s backs.” –John McDaniel, MCS Farm Program Director

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:

Sustainability “No matter where one resides, it is important that we understand the connection that we have to our natural resources and to advocate for the protection of those resources so that society can continue to sustain itself and to thrive for many, many generations to come.” –Aimee Arandia Østensen, MCS Farm/School Coordinator of Special Projects Through activities in the classroom and at the Farm, MCS students gain awareness of the interconnectedness of the MCS community and the impact of the school on the earth. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund helps our sustainability education program to: • Teach students invaluable lessons about community and interdependence, nature, and the sustainable production of food, energy, and fiber. • Model sustainable living and learning through composting in the rooftop garden, school-wide recycling, solar panels at the Farm, and using farm produce and meat for lunches. • Support our teachers through continual professional development as they re-envision curriculum with sustainable principles in mind. • Build partnerships with mission-driven organizations, such as the Green Schools Alliance, Catskill Watershed Project, GrowNYC, and more.

9

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:

Social Justice & Activism From mountaintop removal to the National Student Bill of Rights to the school-toprison pipeline, Manhattan Country School students are speaking out about issues impacting their peers, their school, their community, and society overall. Our social justice curriculum prepares students to be agents of change, who bring compassion, perspective, and intellect to solve the world’s problems. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund supports: • Our students as they discover their voices, stand up for their beliefs, and work together to impact change. • Engaged citizenship among students who are aware and act upon the inequities they see in the world by involving students early in the concepts of social justice and activism. • Community involvement beginning in the younger grades as students discuss the value of work and workers by studying the post office, collecting pennies for the Penny Harvest to fund grants and service projects, and studying equal access to clean air and healthy food in other parts of the world. • Leadership training for 8th graders as they organize the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March and deliver public speeches on current civil rights issues.

Our students, as they discover their voices, stand up for their beliefs, and work together to

impact change.

I Support MCS Mike Arons

MCS Trustee MCS Parent (David ’83, Jennifer ’86) MCS has a unique commitment to economic and ethnic diversity in the context of progressive education. It continues to graduate committed and savvy students. Our country needs more of them.

Roxanne Elings

MCS Trustee MCS Parent (Altana ’12, Roscoe ’15) I support MCS because families deserve to have the choice of a compelling educational opportunity represented by MCS’ model of real diversity, social justice, education, and sustainability curriculum.

Sharon Phillips

MCS Trustee MCS Parent (Zackary ’15, Jory ’18) I support MCS because of its extraordinary inclusiveness that nurtures kids who are proud of where they come from, but are not defined by demographic characteristics. MCS cultivates people who want to make the world better, and know that they can.

Stephanie So

MCS Trustee I support MCS because of the truly innovative model. The theme of social justice and activism that founded the school and the blending of city and farm are unique and unmatched. I see MCS as a special place for children to learn, but also a forum for educators, leaders, and activists to draw inspiration from. I’ve learned so much from the school and the community, and will continue to support MCS in its mission and growth.

Elsa Wentling

MCS Trustee The sustained ambition of a community-centric school based on the principles of the Civil Rights movement – what better way to shape the future?

Sarah Beck

MCS Trustee MCS Parent (Oscar ’19) I support MCS because I believe that MCS offers a uniquely compelling model of education for social justice.

Stephen Trowbridge

MCS Alumnus ’74, MCS Trustee MCS Parent (Jack ’17) I support MCS because this school has had a more fundamental impact on my education than any other school, by far. It was here that I learned the critical values of human equality, social activism, and support for others.

Tom Grattan

MCS Trustee, MCS Faculty I support MCS because of its commitment to racial and economic diversity, its work in modeling progressive teaching practices, its inclusion of activism in all grade levels and subject areas, as well as its dedication to place-based and sustainability education both in the city and at the MCS Farm.

Paul Williams

MCS Trustee, MCS Faculty I’ve worked in many different schools over the years and they all had mission statements. MCS is the first school that truly, deeply, lives its mission. Each conversation, every project, every gathering of students and teachers, is infused with what MCS is all about. As a faculty member, I am amazed at the level of discourse, and the steady undercurrent of heart, and faith, and intellect I witness in each of my colleagues every single day.

Caitlin Naidoff MCS Trustee, MCS Alumna ’00 I support MCS because I have never experienced another community that so effectively fosters curiosity, respect, and commitment to social justice.

Liam Pleven

MCS Trustee, MCS Alumus ’79 MCS Parent (Lillian ’18, Maeve ’22) I support MCS because it has always been committed to making the world a fairer and better place, because it has already made great progress toward that goal, and because there is still so much good work for a place like MCS to do.

Caroline Cotter

MCS Trustee I want more communities to be like MCS: a place of joyful learning and authentic integration of backgrounds, perspectives, and opinions. I support MCS so that it can have a wider impact on children, teachers, our city, and the field of education.

Brian Abell

MCS Trustee MCS Parent (Emma ’18, Josephine ’20) MCS is a school that not only emphasizes social values, these values are the fabric of MCS life. The school lives them, in the way teachers teach and the ways students and teachers interact. It is a great progressive school, but much more than that it is a community – of educators, students, and parents – thinking together about how to make a better world.

Miche‘ le Sola’

MCS Trustee, MCS Director I believe in small schools that start with Pre-K and go through 8th grade. Manhattan Country School’s academic program, diverse community, commitment to equity and justice, and the Farm are valuable pieces of a defining experience that impact our graduates for life. The school’s longstanding commitment to making that opportunity possible for a wide range of children inspires me to be a donor director.

Volunteerism and In-Kind Giving One of the most important ways that families and friends help to support the mission of MCS is through volunteerism and in-kind giving. To those of you who served on a committee, prepared food for an event, or contributed an item or service or time, we humbly thank you. The passion, creativity, generosity and community spirit you contribute is critical to our success and profoundly appreciated.

The Impact of Your Support Manhattan Country School is committed to economic diversity that is three times greater than the average independent school in the United States. As a result, only about 70% of our annual operating expenses are covered by tuition revenue. We rely on a combination of revenue streams to meet our budget each year. These include gifts to the Annual Fund, income from annual community fundraising events and MCS’ investment fund, and revenue from renting our 96th Street facility and the MCS Farm. MCS endures because of the continued generosity and support of dedicated parents and grandparents, alumni, former parents, and friends. Thank you to everyone who made a gift; participated in an online auction; or attended, contributed to, or volunteered at a fundraising event last year. Through the help of your gifts and support, Manhattan Country School teachers and students are able to receive the resources and opportunities that support the important work of making change, building bridges, and finding common ground that is so vital today.
