Our Mission Reflecting the vision of the Civil Rights Movement, Manhattan Country School teaches students in a community with no racial majority and broad economic diversity. Our goals for students are academic excellence, intellectual freedom, social awareness, selfconfidence and first-hand knowledge of the natural world. MCS is unique among New York City independent schools in having a 180-acre working farm integral to the curriculum and a sliding scale for tuition.
Our Vision Manhattan Country School envisions its students as future leaders whose shared experiences in learning and activism inspire them to champion excellence and justice, compassion and peace, and the rights of all people to racial, economic, environmental and educational equity.

Message From
Director Michèle Solá 2014-2015 was full of poignant moments where Manhattan Country School’s history, rooted in the Civil Rights Movement and progressive education, provided meaningful context for the massive demonstrations and civil unrest our students observed on television, in social media and in the world around them. Last fall, the People’s Climate March drew hundreds of thousands of people to New York City, while the United Nations convened a Climate Summit. The global resolve of diverse communities to steward the Earth’s resources in ways that promote environmental justice made an impact all year. The value of an education where seasonal trips to the MCS Farm and daily explorations of urban communities and Central Park are routine was palpable. MCS classrooms filled with questions about climate change, activism and human rights. Black Lives Matter marchers filled the streets of New York City (and other cities across the country). Our school community proved to be a safe place to deepen our understanding of racism and continue the tradition of youth effecting change. Morning meetings and research projects, assemblies and activism campaigns all played a role. Parents and administrators gathered, too, starting a new chapter in ongoing conversations. By April, a forum with parent panelists Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jason Moran and Judy Pryor Ramirez and MCS alumnus Debo Adegbile ’80 exploring the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act and the current state of civil rights filled the Music Room with students, parents, faculty and trustees. Activism, social justice and progressive education have been core to our mission since our founding in 1966. However, none of the important work we do would be possible without the support of our donors. This Annual Report is our chance to acknowledge and thank our generous (and growing) community of volunteers and contributors. (Last year, we celebrated record attendance at both our annual community fundraisers—Farm Festival in the fall and Big Night Out! in the spring.) MCS’ 50th anniversary is on the horizon. In 2016, our anniversary year, we will move to West 85th Street and over the next five years gradually add additional classes, with the goal of reaching an enrollment of 400 in 2020. This ambitious plan and our ability to continue to sustain the mission and program of Manhattan Country School is only possible with the diversity, creativity, engagement and philanthropic support of our community. Thank you for your continued generosity! Sincerely,
Michèle Solá

Diversity Racial, socioeconomic and cultural diversity has been a cornerstone of Manhattan Country School’s mission since our founding in 1966. As a result, our student population has no racial majority and reflects broad socioeconomic diversity. This diversity is supported by our sliding-scale tuition program, which goes beyond the notion of financial aid to ensure that a family’s financial commitment is equal to its financial resources. During the 2014-2015 school year, generous contributions to the Annual Fund supported: O The 4-5s home visits program, which allows children to become budding anthropologists, learning about each other by taking field trips to one another’s homes and exploring the commonalities and differences in how their families live. O Our continued role as a model for sliding-scale tuition. This year, we hosted dozens of independent schools from across the country, providing tours of the school and explaining how we leverage our sliding-scale tuition program to sustain student diversity. O Our administrators and teachers as they presented at education conferences, explaining how we tap into the diversity of our families to enrich curriculum and build a strong, engaged and philanthropic community.

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:
Progressive Education and Teacher Training Manhattan Country School has been a leader in progressive education since 1966. We have a rich legacy of developing curriculum that incorporates diversity, sustainability and social justice. Our academic program thrives because of the dedicated, skilled and passionate teachers in the classroom. Each year, we support these educators by funding professional development opportunities. In addition, as part of our public mission, we train student teachers from New York City’s top teaching schools, including Bank Street, Teachers College, Sarah Lawrence and City College. During the 2014-2015 school year, generous contributions to the Annual Fund supported: O The training of 20 student teachers who join the more than 900 educators we have taught since we first opened our doors. O Professional development opportunities for teachers to study new classroom approaches to topics such as climate change, immigration, math and farm-based education. O Our teachers’ participation as presenters at education conferences from Wonderplay in New York City to Rethinking Our Practices in Pasto, Nariño, Colombia. O Our role as one of the host schools for the 2015 Progressive Education Network Conference in New York City. The theme of the conference—“Access, Equity & Activism: Teaching the Possible”—is highly reflective of our mission and approach to education.

Farm-Based Education and Sustainability “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” It is with this belief that we dedicate a significant portion of our curriculum to educating children about their connection to the natural world and the importance of being environmental stewards. Through multiple trips to the MCS Farm each year, students learn invaluable lessons about community and interdependence, nature, and the sustainable production of food, energy and fiber. This learning is supplemented with complementary lessons in the classroom and the rooftop garden on 96th Street. During the 2014-2015 school year, generous contributions to the Annual Fund supported: O Our seventh- and eighth-graders’ participation in a campaign to reduce the use of landfill-clogging plastic shopping bags in New York City. O An Earth Day celebration in honor of former MCS science teacher Helen Ross Russell, which featured activities ranging from nature walks, tree studies and bird watching in Central Park to the examination of the environmental impact of pollution on New York City’s Upper East Side. O Our teachers’ ability to share some of MCS’ sustainability curriculum with educators across New York State as co-hosts and presenters of The Climate Change Exchange conference in the Catskills.

YOUR SUPPORT AT WORK:
Social Justice and Activism Beginning in the 4-5s, Manhattan Country School students learn about the importance of justice and equality. Through our rich social justice curriculum, students are able to find their voices, stand up for their beliefs and work together to effect change in their school, their community and society overall. During the 2014-2015 school year, generous contributions to the Annual Fund supported: O The 6-7s’ participation in the Common Cents Penny Harvest program, a national drive to collect pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and turn that change into grants and service projects to better their community. O Our seventh- and eighth-graders’ powerful activism campaign to educate peers about healthy relationships and to lobby Congress to put laws in place to make college campuses safer. O The 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March. This year our eighth-graders tackled challenging topics including police brutality, environmental racism, bullying and income inequality. O A spirited panel discussion about the current state of civil rights and voting rights featuring MCS parents Ta-Nehisi Coates, national correspondent, The Atlantic; Jason Moran, artistic director for jazz at The Kennedy Center; and Judy Pryor-Ramirez, director, Office of Civic Engagement and Social Justice, Eugene Lang College, The New School. MCS alumnus Debo Adegbile ’80, a partner at WilmerHale, also contributed to the discussion via pre-recorded video remarks.

Volunteerism and In-Kind Giving One of the most important ways that families and friends help support the MCS mission is through volunteerism and in-kind giving. To those who served on a committee, prepared food for an event or contributed an item or service or time, we humbly thank you. The passion, creativity, generosity and community spirit you contribute is critical to our success and is profoundly appreciated. The Impact of Your Support Manhattan Country School is committed to economic diversity three times greater than the average independent school in the United States. As a result, only about 70 percent of our annual operating expenses are covered by tuition revenue. We rely on a combination of revenue streams to meet our budget each year. These include gifts to the Annual Fund, income from annual community fundraising events and MCS’ investment fund, and revenue from renting our 96th Street facility and the MCS Farm. MCS endures because of the continued generosity and support of dedicated parents and grandparents, alumni, former parents and friends. Thank you to everyone who made a gift; participated in an online auction; or attended, contributed to or volunteered at a fundraising event during the 2014-2015 school year. Through the help of your gifts and support, MCS teachers and students are able to receive the resources and opportunities that support the important work of making change, building bridges and finding common ground that is so vital today.
