5. BALLSTON METRO STATION

allston Station area comprises approx. 250 acres of land surrounding the Ballston Metro station within the Sector plan, the station area is discussed in terms of the

three sub-areas shown in map below. North Ballston- predominantly residential Central Ballston- proposed mixed use development, office & residences West Ballston- predominantly residential High density office and residential development opportunities are provided immediately surrounding the metro station. These high density uses and a regional shopping facility form the major focus for a new downtown Central Arlington. North of the metro station, the plan supports apartment development and townhouse infill and reinforce existing residential development.

This research focuses on the principles of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and the method how to improve the ridership of a transit station. Delhi Metro consists of eight active lines namely, Red, Yellow, Blue, Violet, Green, Magenta, Pink, and Airport Express line. The Red line being the oldest. Delhi Metro has spread its fingers across Delhi and at any point in the National capital a metro station is maximum 15 minutes away. Based on the latest ridership data it is seen some stations exhibit healthy and good ridership compared to some which seem to underperform. On the Blue line Janakpuri West exhibits healthy ridership, similarly Green Park on the Yellow line. I selected three case stations based on socio-economic profile on the three oldest lines namely Red, Yellow and Blue. The stations were Seelampur (a socio-economically backward locality of Delhi), Green Park and Janakpuri West. I
