BREEDER PROFILE willOw rock angus - dEVON bOITSON Anola, Manitoba.

Why did you choose Angus Cattle for your program?

My dad (Craig) started breeding Angus cattle before I was born, Angus cattle is what I was raised with. But after years of observing and learning from producers of all breeds of beef cattle, I have decided Angus is the breed I want continue to build our program around. Over the years I’ve seen good cattle from every breed, but in my opinion, Angus cattle bring the most amount of desirable traits into one package, and as a breeder, that is my goal: to bring as many desirable traits as possible into one animal. Selling bulls with multi-trait excellence leads to not only customers making more money at selling their calves, but also producing functional replacement females that will raise a calf every year for over a decade. I feel choosing the Angus breed will allow our operation to breed cattle that will make the lives of our customers better financially without the extra work.

YEARS INVOLVED IN THE ANGUS BREED?

Growing up, the majority of my dad’s herd was commercial with a small group of registered Angus cows, and selling a couple of bulls every year. But as I got more involved, I helped incorporate AI and embryo transfer into the herd to help multiply our number of registered Angus cows while also outsourcing some Angus genetics from different Angus breeders.

INVOLVEMENT in Local Ag Groups, 4-H or in the Manitoba Angus Assoc?

-8 years with the Broken-Spring 4-H Beef Club -Currently serving my second year with the Manitoba Angus Association

What are Some Traits of the Angus Breed that you have Incorporated into your Program?

Based on the traits listed on the MB Angus website, I would say almost all those traits are in some way being incorporated into our program, some more than others. In my opinion, its all about balance and equilibrium. Trying to incorporate as many desirable traits as possible without losing any along the way. Commercial producers need to sell calves in the fall that weigh up and are desirable to backgrounder/feedlot operations. But they also need to have sound functional cows that can calve every year for a decade or more. These are two goals, that can make a commercial cattlemen profitable. We strive to incorporate traits that will lead to these goals, not focusing on one more than the other. We focus on how producers can be most profitable and incorporating traits that lead to that.

What would you like to see done in the Angus breed?

There are a few things that I want to see done in the Angus breed. The first I believe is that there is too heavy of a reliance on EPD’s when selecting cattle, I believe using your eye to observe the phenotype of an animal and knowing how to critique an animal phenotypically is much more important in selecting an animal than using epds. All of our replacements and herd sires are observed phenotypically before we decide to incorporate their influence into our herd. The second thing I have noticed about the Angus breed is that the Angus industry is starting to use Angus cattle that have too long of extended growth periods leading to too large of frame cattle. This is great if all your calves are sold for beef but keeping reliable replacements is much more difficult with cattle that have extended growth periods. I believe that selecting bulls with extended growth periods and too large of frame as mature bulls will in future years lead to infertile and unproductive daughters that are retained in the herd. I believe that keeping cows moderate and easy fleshing leads to higher producing cows that will make your operation more money. Continued on Page 5

Editor’s Corner

Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick

Well as I am writing this we are getting our first rain since September 2nd and it is very welcome! In this crazy world we are living in, there is always something to be thankful for. Farm families are so lucky to have the wide open spaces, the comradery of fellow cattle people and their animals. As we move into fall, the routine on the farm hasn’t changed. Weaning weights, sales and preparation for winter. The sales have presented some interesting challenges this year with the new health guidelines and recent changes across the Prairie Provinces. Please check the website for updated information about all upcoming events. Calf sales have held steady thus far and we hope to see that continue. It is always rewarding to see the Angus calves come in looking so good with increased weaning wts. on a dry year. We only hope that everyone manages to get enough feed for the winter. Some ranchers will get creative with feed sources as they have in the past. There is an article in this issue with some helpful hints about maintaining good nutrition for your cattle. As you may have noticed on the front that this is the 30th Anniversary of our Manitoba Angus Newsletter. It all began in 1991 when Ruby Simpson who was on the board at the time decided they should have an outlet to keep the breeders up-to-date on the events around the province. There have been several editors over the years and all have worked hard to keep the Manitoba Angus Outlook

Newsletter informative for the membership and commercial producers. Ruby Simpson produced the Newsletter from 1991 –1996. Krista Bouchard took over the production and did an excellent job until 2005 when life got too busy and she decided to retire from the position. In January of 2006 , the MAA board decided to hire someone outside the board and change the name of the Newsletter. It became the Manitoba Angus Outlook. Grant Moffatt was hired for the job as editor in 2006. Grant sadly went missing in September of that year. Arlene Kirkpatrick and Lois McRae So for the November 2006 issue Arlene & Lois volunteered to put out a shortened version. We enjoyed doing it and decided to stay on, when the board hired us. The rest as they say “is history”. Even though we are now living in a digital world, we know there are still many people who like to sit down with a magazine in hand to read. We are striving to make the Outlook interesting and current The Manitoba Angus Outlook is celebrating 30 years since its inception a real accomplishment for Manitoba Angus Association!!!!! MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Well as I write this, I think everyone would agree it has been a great harvest season. It would now definitely be nice to see some moisture. The fall calf run is well underway with prices seeming to be steady. Ag Ex 2021 is right around the corner, Oct 27-30, with the Angus Show on the 28th. In other news, the Keystone Klassic will be held on Dec.4/21. For the first time in the long history of this event, due to the current Manitoba Health regulations, the Sale Management Bohrson Marketing has made the decision that the Keystone Simmental Association Sale & Keystone Klassic will be joining forces to combine two of the longest running purebred Sales in Canada. This was a near unanimous decision by the consignors of both breeds to make this event happen. We have yet to make a decision on how we will go about hosting our annual meeting, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated on whether it be in person or by zoom. Please check the website at www.mbangus.ca for details on the AGM and any other Angus events. See you down the road. Dallas Johnston - President Manitoba Angus Association Breeder Profile continued from page 3>>>

Do you use the Angus green tags and how do you market your Angus cattle? Yes we use green tags, anything that doesn’t make the cut as a breeding animal (we are very critical as to what makes the replacement pen) gets shipped to auction. Do you have any new techniques used on your cattle farm example verified beef , grazing or any other comments on your program. We do our best to treat our cattle like commercial cattle, feed our cattle adequate quality hay along with straw or harvested ryegrass. We want to raise our cattle similar to how our commercial customers will raise them. Anyone is welcome to visit our farm anytime, we want our cattle to speak for themselves! Canadian Directors Report What a nice fall it has been! With a bit of rainfall and some cooler temperatures, it is giving us a break from a terrible summer. I hope everyone is finding enough feed and can make it through these tough and uncertain times. I recently attended our fall board meeting in August. The meeting was held in conjunction with a technical day where Myles and his team highlighted some of the items the Association is working on. The recording of this event can be found on YouTube under the Angus Broadcasting Canada. One partnership that I am very excited about is our involvement with Onecup AI. This company uses camera technology to measure and record phenotypical data on things like feet and legs or udders. It can also aid in general production practices like calving, heat detection, and overall health of the animals. Canadian Angus was directly involved in helping develop the standards around the data collected and will be using the data to future develop our EPD’s. Please check out the website for more information www.onecup.ai. I am glad to see that there will be multiple fall shows this year. Even though there will be some extra hoops to jump through it will be worth it. I want to give praise to the organizing committees for taking on the challenge of making these events happen. We need to remember that many of these organizations are only following the rules that are laid out before them and they are doing their best in the present situation. The Association is once again in a good over all position and the board is continually looking for ways to add value to the membership and the beef sector. There are many exciting opportunities in the works and I am very excited about the future of our Association. As always please feel free to give me a call to discuss ideas or concerns. Thank you, Past President Shawn Birmingham Being on the Canadian Angus Board: As some of you might know my term on the board comes to a close this June. So, it is time for one of you to step up and take on the challenge. Being on the board is a major time commitment. There are 3 board meetings per year, two of them are held at Angus Central and the other is at the AGM in the designated province for that year. In addition to this there are committee meetings throughout the year. Committee meetings are typically done on Zoom and they are done quarterly. There usually is some form of meeting every month which can take anywhere from a quick 15 min conversation to a couple of hours. The board operates under a governance model which can seem intimidating at first but after some training and working through a meeting it is easy to understand. In addition to this you as director sit on the Manitoba board which is an additional 4 meetings per year. If you are interest in being on the board your name has to be nominated at the up coming Manitoba AGM. If any of you have any questions about being on the board I would be happy to talk to you more about it. I have enjoyed my time on the board and as members I think it is one of the great ways to contribute to our Breed and our Association.

Raising Quality Cattle That Work Since 1986!

ALTERNATIVE FEED OPTIONS 2021

Hello, my name is Doug Allison and I would like to visit with you about alternative feed ingredients to help balancing feedlot and cow diets. I have worked with Cargill Animal Nutrition for the past 20 years providing this service for many producers. With this past summer it has been quite a challenge for everyone. With different levels of drought over the prairies, from very extreme to moderate in some places, inventory of feed ingredients for winter feeding programs has been on everyone’s mind for a few months now. Before we start to discuss this I would like to talk about extending your feeding program through fall grazing. If you have the opportunity to let your cattle out on stubble, hay fields, etc this can sure help extend your grazing season and the economics that comes along with it. The main thing we need to keep in mind is when we have the cow herd out on the lush regrowth that we see this year is when the first killing frost comes along. When this happens, nitrates can spike up the plant and will drop down again into the roots over time. Excess manure, fertilizer, and stressed condition can cause these conditions. You can take samples of this regrowth and test it for nitrates to determine if the plants are carrying any. Cattle can manage a maximum level of 1000ppm and will adapt to the environment. Over 1000ppm they should be restricted to 50% of their daily intake. The main point is to test these fields if you feel there will be a concern. You can also wait for 7 to 10 days to put cattle on these fields after the frost. There is a lot of information on the web to read over to help understand nitrate poisoning. Winter feeding programs start in the fall when there is not enough nutritional feed for them to maintain their body condition. Don’t stretch the fall grazing and sacrifice body condition score. This will cost you more $ in the long run to put this condition back on your cows when the weather gets cold. In drought situations the main thing your cow herd will need is forage and fiber. Today we have a lot of different fiber offerings that we never used many years ago. I always think that every product has a nutritional value, you just need to get a feed test on it to decide where it can be used. It is always good to get a wet chem test on products that are relatively new to your feeding program. In drought conditions and to extend your better quality feed ingredients there are fiber sources like traditional straws. Oats, barley wheat, triticale, rye are normal fiber straws, but now a days I balance diets using corn stalks, canola straw, lentil, soya bean, flax and kochia. These type of straws can be very high in NDF and lignin which mean they are lower in nutritional value. Feed test will help identify they nutritional value of these products. They can help stretch your better ingredients but should not be fed at too high of level to sacrifice protein and energy requirements of the feeding programs you are wanting to balance. When wanting to stretch the hay and silage piles that could be short this winter these alternative fiber sources can help with this but you will have to also feed other protein and energy products. Remember nutritional balance is the key, and you should be using supplement, mineral, energy and protein ingredients along with your fiber sources to balance your cows, bull and calves programs. Everyone needs to understand limitations, don’t fall to far behind. If you sacrifice nutrition, it will cost you a lot more in the long run.

CANADIAN JUNIOR ANGUS PRESIDENT REPORT -Naomi Best

Hello Juniors and Fellow Angus Breeders, I hope you have all made the best of your summer and are looking forward to the fall months ahead. There are a few events to reflect on from the past couple of months and some exciting times ahead with the Canadian Junior Angus! We were able to host Showdown “Hybrid Style” in Olds, Alberta at the end of August. We want to thank all of our Juniors who were able to attend and sponsors for our show, as their support is greatly appreciated. It was great to have our Junior Angus family back together! We were able to award three scholarships to three very deserving Junior members. A special congratulations goes out to the Canadian Angus Foundation heifer voucher recipient as well. Our next major event; the Annual GOAL Conference will be held in Toronto, Ontario February 19th -21st, 2022. As always there are some great speakers and activities lined up for everyone who attends. I highly encourage Juniors to register for GOAL and for those who are further away we do have travel bursaries available. As a Junior attending GOAL you will be able to take in some great knowledge from industry leaders as well as make connections with your fellow Juniors from all across the country. Keep in mind that those who attend will be eligible to win a heifer voucher from the Canadian Angus Foundation. For our older members, mark in your calendar that January 5th is the deadline to apply for the Foundation Legacy Scholarship. The interviews, panel discussion and awards will take place at the GOAL Conference held in February. If you have any questions about any of these opportunities don’t hesitate to ask myself or any of the board members. We are looking forward to hosting Showdown 2022 from July 27th to 29th, 2022 in Brandon, Manitoba. Keep in mind that this will be back to back with the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up in Neepawa, Manitoba, so Juniors can attend two shows in one week! I look forward to seeing you all this fall or into the coming year whether it be at GOAL, Showdown or out and about at sales and events.

CAA Presidents Message Has time sped up or is it just me? There are only so many hours in a day and most days that number feels like it is a few too short to get everything done that sits on the to do list. Undoubtedly the fall season is one of the busiest seasons in agriculture with harvest, gathering feed and cattle, weaning and show/sale preparations along with all of those other undone summer projects. Fall is also a great time to check in on your customers and friends. It is typically when they will see the fruits of their labor come to market. The genetics that you provided them 2 breeding seasons ago are finally making their mark. Ask the tough questions, are the genetics doing what they hoped they would, are the buyers competitively accepting those calves, are the females lasting long enough to be adding to the bottom line? All too often customer service stops the day the bull has been delivered, don’t be that operation!!

New developments in technology and livestock production continue to come to market at an ever increasing rate these days. It is important to sit back and recognize how this technology may benefit your individual operation; will it save me time?, will it reduce our labor? how will this benefit my customers in the future? These are all questions we need to ask for ourselves. Technology is like a “good” pair of boots, one size doesn’t fit all!! What works for one operation may not fit yours. This doesn’t mean that it should be thrown away and not utilized. That is for you to decide!! I’m looking forward to connecting with many of our Angus friends and extended family this fall. While the show season will feel somewhat different this fall we all have shows and sales to look forward to. While this drought has forced us to become creative and develop plans B, C & D. We continue to prove our perseverance and steadfast nature as cattle producers. Finally, don’t be afraid to check in with that friend you haven’t seen in a while. I’m sure they want to hear from you. Keep on keeping on until our paths reconnect. Your CAA President Sheldon Kyle

Man/Sask Rep. Business Development Team Report - Bob Toner Fall is definitely in the air! As we look back at 2021, it was certainly a year full of challenges for many both personally and in agriculture. Covid-19 has made planning events a real challenge with the ever-changing protocols. I salute all the exhibition boards, breed associations and everyone else involved in the industry who are working hard trying to make events happen in these challenging times. With that being said I will be trying to get to as many events this fall as possible and I look forward to seeing all of you and reconnecting. Many areas suffered through a widespread drought this year and some hard decisions had to be made about downsizing or getting out altogether. Most people I've talked to did manage to get enough feed gathered up however finding enough straw did seem to be an issue. So far the purebred sales and the commercial calf prices seem to be holding up. Let's hope this trend continues through the fall run to help ease some stress. Hopefully this year was just a bump in the road and next year will be better. We've all been through this before and unfortunately probably will be again. As I’ve said before, we're a resilient group and we'll persevere. The Saskatchewan Angus Association held a very successful tour in August this year. This year we went to the northwest part of the province and it was a great two-day tour. The first day was in the Meadow Lake area and the second was to the south and east of Glaslyn. Producers from all over Saskatchewan as well as Manitoba and Alberta were in attendance. If you've never been on one of these tours, you owe it to yourself to go to one no matter what area you're from. These tours are a great opportunity to not only visit some operations but also to get to visit fellow producers in a casual, laid back manner. Good luck to everyone at the shows and sales this fall and I hope to see you around. See ya down the road Bob Toner

VIRTUAL MANITOBA YOUTH BEEF ROUNDUP 2021 August 1, 2021 Despite a challenging 2 years of let downs and cancellations, including our 2nd Round Up, participants at Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up have shown great resilience. It was with heavy hearts that the Round Up committee was forced to cancel our show for yet another year in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. However, with a little outward thinking and help rom Direct Livestock Marketing Systems (DLMS) the committee was able to host our annual event virtually to be broadcasted and judged online. It was a great success with 42 juniors entered and a total of 80 livestock entries. Despite a totally different approach to the August long weekend our juniors know and love, juniors were still able to participate in open livestock confirmation classes as well as skill building competitions such as public speaking, marketing, photography, graphic design and judging. Participants were given guidelines of how to present their animal via video. Animals were presented in show condition and videos were uploaded for broad cast on DLMS. Overall it was an incredibly strong presentation of animals and projects, juniors were applauded by the committee, peers and the general public for such adaptability and creativity despite a challenging circumstance. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors , parents, Juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success in past years. A huge thank you to everyone for their support and willingness to keep the Round Up spirit alive in our virtual show. Projects were on display on the DLMS website and the Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up Page from July 21 to August 1st. From there the general public could view all projects and check out our juniors hard work. Judging also took place during this time period and results were submitted to DLMS. On August 1st at 7pm, what would normally be our banquet and award ceremony, results were announced live on a live video broadcast on DLMS. All videos and comments were featured n a flawless manner for juniors and the public to find out in real time who would be crowned as our winners. This presentation took major effort and coordination from DLMS, and we cannot Thank Mark and Joanne Shologan enough for their contribution! Judges for our virtual event included judges of the confirmation show, Greg and Amanda Pugh of Pugh Farms Edgerton Alberta. Our Livestock Judging Competition judge Bevin Hamilton of Vermilion Alberta. Our Public Speaking Judges Carson Callum, General Manager of Manitoba Beef Producers and Shannon Carvey of Alexander MB. Our Photography Judge Jessy MilneSmith of Douglas MB. Our Graphic Design Judge Carson Callum. Our Marketing Judge Jackie Cavers of LaRiviere MB. Class 2 All Other Breeds Bred Heifers 1.
