JUNIOR BREEDER PROFILE Naomi Best, Harding , MB

Canadian Junior Angus President

Adventures of a CJA Member: As my time as a Canadian Junior Angus member comes close to an end, I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities I have had. Looking back, the Canadian Angus, Canadian Junior Angus and Canadian Angus Foundation have provided myself and many other Junior Angus enthusiasts with various events, scholarships, bursaries, connections, memories and much more. In 2011, my brother Levi and I attended our first CJA Showdown which was held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. We had a blast getting to make friends with other members whether it was around the barns, in the showring, or having an evening of fun at the swimming pool. We knew that after that weekend we would be attending more CJA Showdown’s in years to come. In 2014 Showdown was held in Virden, Manitoba. That year we had a record setting amount of rain, causing extreme floods in some areas. Highway #259 in the Virden valley opened up just days before S Showdown was set to start. I am sure that everyone can remember the tremendous amount of mosquitos that took over the fair grounds that year as well. Anyone who has attended Showdown knows that in order to partake in the team judging competition you must place in the top six in your age category of the individual judging competition which then you are paired with another individual. Lexi Hicks and I placed in the top six and were excited to be a team for team judging. SHOWDOWN Barrie, Ontario Little did we know that this would just be the beginning of our fun adventures together as CJA members. Since then, I have attended Showdown in Barrie, Ontario and Barriere, British Columbia. Each location making new friendships, endless memories and overall, the same fun experience. In July of 2019 Lexi Hicks and I packed up and headed to Nashville, Tennessee to represent the CAA and CJA at the NJA L.E.A.D. Conference. We had a fun weekend getting to know some American Junior Angus members, we toured some farms and spent an afternoon exploring Nashville, all it has to offer and the Grand Ole Opry. In January of 2020, Lexi and I continued our adventures in Wooster, Ohio where we attended the Certified Angus Beef Young Leaders Seminar. We got to reconnect with some of the NJA Board of Directors, make new friendships and expand our knowledge in a different area of our industry. In 2014 I registered for my first Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (G.O.A.L.) Conference in Calgary, Alberta. To say I was nervous would be an understatement so I made my mom tag along with me. Once arriving in Calgary, the CJA Board of Directors made sure that all members got to make new connections and friendships through ice breakers and fun activities. We toured the new CAA office, attended a dinner theater and listened to some amazing guest speakers. That weekend I got to experience the Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship panel discussion. Seeing the finalists up on a stage in front of all the members attending G.O.A.L. seemed awfully scary, but everyone remained calm and composed. Never would I have thought that I would be sitting up on a stage similar to that with my fellow Legacy Scholarship finalists in 2019 at G.O.A.L. in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After attending my first G.O.A.L. and seeing how the CJA board worked together as a team to put on such a fun and educational event for the junior members, I knew that someday I wanted to be a part of the board. Since then, I have attended G.O.A.L. in Ottawa, Ontario where we were able to tour the Parliament building, skate on the canals, and partake in an excellent team building exercise. In Edmonton, Alberta we stayed at the West Edmonton Mall where attendees listened to some tremendous industry speakers, had an entertaining evening with a hypnotist and watched the junior teams be announced for the World Angus Forum. In Winnipeg, Manitoba we heard from various speakers about farm business management, we toured the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and were able to skate at the Forks. In Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan we toured the tunnels of course, learned about conserving our resources, protecting the

land and how to achieve your goals. In 2020 G.O.A.L. was back in Calgary, Alberta which was neat to be able to loop back around and this time attend as a CJA Director. continued on page 12

Editor’s Corner

Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick There is one thing for certain in life. Time keeps moving forward and we just have to deal with what ever comes along. This past year has been a challenge to everyone in so many different ways. As food producers for the world, farmers have always found ways to adapt. The beef industry has shown a fair amount of success with that over this past year. The bull sales have continued with great success, even with smaller numbers of people in attendance. The assistance of the on-line support crew was a huge part of these sales. This issue we continue to try and provide the membership with as much relative & up to date information as possible. Some events continue to hang in limbo hoping that the number of Covid cases drop enough to hold some summer events. Check for updates through out the issue and then go to the Manitoba Angus website at www.mbangus.ca for later updates on Angus events this summer! The fall looks more positive and at this time there are plans to go ahead with Ag Ex and Agribition. The Keystone Klassic will continue and there is a nomination form in this issue. Please take time to fill it out & make contact with the management because they won’t know you want to enter an animal otherwise.

We recognize 2 pioneers in the Angus Industry that have had a great influence in Manitoba and beyond. We have also continued to recognize our Juniors from the past years to encourage new young producers to get involved in the Junior Angus programs. There are many events, scholarships and trips to take part in. Even though that may seem impossible to imagine right now. Things will get better and we will get through this as proven by our forefathers who were challenged with influenza, war and severe droughts. We hope that everyone gets enough rain this summer, with lots of grass. Remember if you are having a down day, think about the fact that we are still the lucky ones, who get to go outside everyday with lots of space to move around and enjoy our animals. We all look forward to the days when we can HUG family and shake a friend’s hand once again. Enjoy your Angus Steaks and Burgers on the BBQ this summer! Arlene & Lois The Manitoba Angus Outlook is celebrating 30 years since its inception a real accomplishment for Manitoba Angus Association!!!!!

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As I sit here writing this, we are getting a bit of a shower, finally. This year’s bull sale season I believe was fairly steady, and I hope that everyone had a successful calving season. Now we just need some more moisture and warm days to get the grass growing to help get the weight on those calves for a hopefully strong calf market this fall. With so much uncertainty in the world, I am not sure a summer Gold Show or a field day will take place. Also at this time, I am not sure what will happen with Showdown this summer. Showdown is a wonderful event for the youth. I know in our family, many friendships were formed that are still going strong today. The kids definitely make friendships that last a long time and with these events cancelled it is a missed opportunity for these friendships to be formed. For those of you that are not aware, Bohrson Marketing will be conducting the Keystone Klassic sale this December in Brandon. If you are interested in consigning to the sale, please feel free to contact a member of the Bohrson Marketing Team. The sale is open for any Manitoba Angus Association member and is a great opportunity to market your program. Right now, we are planning to have our fall Gold Show at Ag Ex in Brandon at the end of October. To finish off, I hope everyone’s seeding and haying seasons go well and hope to see you all down the road at some point. Dallas Johnston President Manitoba Angus Association

Memorial Foundation Female Award

The Manitoba Angus Association is establishing a new award to assist young cattle breeders. This award will be in the form of a $2,500 voucher presented to a successful applicant, and is to be used to purchase an Angus female at the Keystone Klassic 2021 Sale.

Anyone aged 21 and under as of Jan. 1, 2021 may apply. Applicants must submit an essay of approximately 500 words covering 4 main points. 1. Why will you select Angus as your preferred breed? 2. What has been your involvement in the cattle industry? 3. What are your future goals? 4. Who has been your main mentor “influence” in the cattle industry and why? Applications / Essays are to be emailed to MAA Secretary: Mandi Fewings at mandi.mbangus@gmail.com no later than June 30, 2021 A committee will select the finalists, and they will be contacted for interviews. The winner will be notified well in advance of the Keystone Klassic Sale.

Jack Hart was one of the founding members of the Keystone Klassic Sale and was an annual supporter of it, consigning top quality cattle every year. The Manitoba Angus Board of Directors felt that this award should be presented in Jack’s memory.

May 2 CANADIAN ANGUS PRESIDENT REPORT

As I sit to write this message, I am glad that there is some rain falling. It’s been a dry spring and there is a lot of uncertainty and worry from many producers on how the summer will go. But at least mother nature gives us hope once in a while. The uncertainty remains with all our lives due to this covid issue. Our AGM is soon approaching and it is looking unclear if it will actually happen. Time will tell if things will be relaxed enough to allow us to have some kind of event. I am very excited for the upcoming AGM even if it’s not traditionally what we have enjoyed in the past. I feel the Association is in a great position for future growth, and we have a great team and board of directors to lead this Association forward. I am looking forward to share our financial position and our future plans with the membership as well as getting input from you to help shape the future. Since many of you will be registering calves currently or in the near future, I want to remind you of the Sire Verification policy that was implemented over two years ago. It states that sires have to be verified to their dam as well as their sire in order for their calves to be eligible for registration. This policy will ensure that we can strengthen the accuracy of our herd book, a policy that is supported by many members. Having an accurate pedigree is, in my opinion, one of the most important aspects of our Association. I want to strongly encourage everyone to contact any director if you have any concerns or ideas that will help move our breed forward. There is no bad comment or idea. Every bit of information the board receives from the membership will be presented to the proper channels to try and make this Association better. Thanks :

My name is Austen Anderson and together with my wife Katie, parents Bruce and Ione and sister Breanna we operate Anderson Cattle Co. near Swan River, Manitoba. We market yearling and two year old Red and Black Angus bulls through our annual bull sale in March as well as sell packages of females privately and consign females to fall sales. Breanna, Katie and I have all been very active in Junior Angus programs over the years and it has benefited us greatly in our respective careers. As an industry, we are really blessed to have such amazing youth opportunities such as the Manitoba Junior Angus Association, Canadian Junior Angus Association and 4-H. How many other industries have such vibrant, interactive and educational experiences that are available to young beef producers. I fondly remember attending many Manitoba Beef Round Ups. It was often in those times the only show we would attend as we were still struggling with BSE at this time and dragging the trailer or camper across the country was not an option. From there I joined the Canadian Junior Angus Board and became the Canadian Junior Ambassador in 2011. This gave me the opportunity to attend Goal Conference and National shows across the Country that I normally would not have been able to travel to. Two of the great skills I learned through involvement in CJAA and MJAA was networking and board governance. While Junior Ambassador I was introduced to many iconic breeders that I would have normally been intimidated to meet, but they were very friendly and interested in the Junior program. I gained a lot of confidence through this program in talking to people of all walks of life. While on the CJAA you do a lot of planning and a lot of fundraising. These were both very helpful in my development. The planning and board governance has really benefited me in my community involvement with our local Agricultural Society and the planning of our Annual Northwest Round Up and Exhibition. We were very proud this year to donate 15% of our bull sale average to the Canadian Angus Foundation. The Canadian Angus Foundation supports Youth Activities, Scientific Research and protecting the history and stories of the Angus Breed in Canada. I hold this Foundation in the highest regard and hope that my fellow breeders will also support the CAF. On a final note to young cattle producers between the ages of 18 and 35. If you enjoyed the social aspect attending Goal Conference, the team atmosphere of being on a Junior board as well as travel opportunities I highly recommend you check out Cattlemen's Young Leaders and the Youth Cattlemen’s Council. They are both excellent networking and mentorship opportunities and can provide you with what you have been craving since you somehow became too old for “Junior Activities” or just have children like Katie and I did, and then in 6 years it will be appropriate for us to attend Junior shows again as long as we bring Finley. Junior Member Profile – Ty Nykoliation Hello, my name is Ty Nykoliation from Crandall, MB. I am 16 years old and have been a member of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association for 9 years. I currently have a small purebred herd which I run with my grandparent’s herd at N7 Stock Farm. Two of the first purebreds I purchased were bought from the Keystone Klassic sale in Brandon. I was able to buy these females thanks to scholarship money I was lucky enough to win twice from the Canadian Junior Angus Association. With quality females I have been able to enjoy many successes in the show ring. I have been a regular exhibitor at the RMWF, MB. Angus Summer Gold Show, AG-Ex as well as many local fairs and jackpots. One of the first females I purchased had a very successful show season as a yearling heifer and then went on to be named MB Junior Angus Show Female of the Year as a two-year-old. There are many other youth activities/ events I have taken part in outside of the Angus Association. I am a 9 year member of the Lenore 4-H Beef Club. I currently hold the office of President. Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up is always part of my summer each year. I first attended when I was 6 yrs. old and haven’t missed one yet. I have been lucky enough to be awarded the Junior Grand Aggregate 3 times. The Kirk Stierwalt Clinic has been another annual event having participated 4 times at the RMWF. Skills learned at this clinic have contributed to many of my successes. I really enjoy being a part of the MB. Junior Angus Association. Membership has helped me to build my herd and has provided me with opportunities and connections which will help me into the future.

Naomi Best continued from page 1 July of 2018 was when I joined the CJA Board of Directors, taking over the Manitoba position that Raina Syrnyk held. It was different going from a Junior attending these events to helping organize and put them on. Throughout the last three years I have held the position of Secretary and now President. Though COVID didn’t allow for us to host Showdown in my home province last summer as President, I am looking forward to when it returns. Being on the board has allowed me to gain skills that will help me for years to come, and make connections with various people within the industry. Aside from Showdown and G.O.A.L. there are other opportunities that our Associations have to off such as scholarships, self-directed travel bursaries and many more which can all be found on the CJA website. With the help of the Canadian Angus Foundation Self Directed Travel Bursary, in November of 2019 I participated in the Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture Competition held at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario. Upon arrival I met up with my fellow Manitoba Junior Angus member, Lainie Muir where we both spoke about our strong passion within the Agriculture industry. I have also been fortunate enough to have applied and received scholarships throughout my time as a CJA

member as well. The assistance that the CJA and CAF offer for those who continue their education is very helpful. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that I have had over the years as a CJA member. I encourage all Juniors to check out the Canadian Angus Foundation and Canadian Junior Angus websites

to see what opportunities may be available to them. It may seem daunting or like you may not achieve what you have applied for, but trust me, you don’t know unless you try! Looking back, I couldn’t be more thankful for what the CJA and CAF have offered for not only myself, but every other Junior Angus member. The friendships I have made, the connections with other industry leaders, the memories and the experiences have all been something that I will never forget. If any juniors have questions about the application processes or just any questions in general, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me as I will gladly help you.

Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship Panel Discussion Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Editor’s Note: Thank you to all the Juniors for sharing your interesting profiles and achievements in the Junior Angus Program. This is a program we should be very proud of and the opportunities it has given to our youth.

Online Bull Sale Dos and Do-Nots: The Game Isn't the Same Jeff Gaye reprinted with permissionfrom Beef Business magazine 2021.

Auctions are a pretty effective way of determining a fair price for a bull. As a buyer, you know what the animal is worth to you—but what you end up paying depends on what it’s worth to someone else. You might pay a little more than you’d hoped, or a little less than you expected. At live auctions, there can also be some gamesmanship involved. It’s a competition, after all, and experienced bidders know all the tricks. Add the auctioneer into the equation—it’s their job to get the best price for the seller— and there’s a whole “inner game” involved in trying to get the animal you want at the price you want to pay. Online bull sales have some similarities to live auctions, and some differences. Mark Shologan, Purebred Sales Director for Direct Livestock Marketing Systems, says if you’re more accustomed to the live auction ring, it pays to know how to approach an online sale. One thing is the same whether you’re in a live auction or an online auction. It’s the same for all auctions, whether you’re buying a bull or a bathtub: do your homework. “Do your research on the cattle you're buying. Do your research on the program and the people you're buying from,” Shologan says. The bull on the auction block may be more valuable to you than to another bidder, depending on how you see it contributing to your own program or your own herd’s genetics. Or, no matter how fine a specimen it is, it might not be worth as much to you. It’s important to know what you want, and what it’s worth to you. And the more you can learn about the program an animal comes from, the easier it is to determine a bull’s value. But there are also key differences between a live auction and an online auction, and Shologan offers some tips on what’s important to know going in: Sign up in advance “Get logged in and signed up before the sale if possible, just so you don't have to wait for approval. The earlier the better,” he said. He recommends signing in at least 24 hours before the sale. “The earlier the better” goes for applying for bidding too, “just so you don't clog up the process,” Shologan said. Check your connection and keep it clear Rural Internet: enough said. “Make sure that your Internet connection is good, and make sure that you're not doing anything else on your computer,” Shologan said. “Or make sure no one else in the house is using the Internet.” “You go to do your part of the sale, and if you've got kids on Skype or you've got the kids watching YouTube, guess what? Your Internet connection will not work well enough.” There are three things that will affect how well you communicate with the sale. One is the Internet connection at the sale site; the second is the sale’s service provider and its own connections and servers, et cetera; and finally, it’s your connection at home. “The Internet broadcast could be perfect. The computer companies could all be working perfectly. But if your connection is not good enough, you know what? You're not going to have a great experience,” Shologan said. “Make sure you've done a speed test. Make sure your connection is as prepared as possible. And don't be afraid to talk to the Internet company you're using for the sale. If you have questions, try to ask them ahead of time.” In a lot of cases, your Internet service provider can help you deal with foreseeable problems. “So call ahead and make sure you have your backup plans in place.” continued on Page 16

online bull sale dOS AND dON’TS cONTINUED from Page 14 Bid quick and bid early Don’t wait too long to bid, Shologan says. “If you take extra time to think about if you should bid or not, chances are that bull will be sold just because the auctioneer can’t see you waiting.” Have an idea in mind of what you want to spend, and make sure you’re getting your bids in quickly. “We don’t want you to miss out on a bull,” he said. Follow the bid button Don’t rely on your computer feed’s audio or video to time your bid. The accurate, real-time indicatorof the latest bid is the auction’s “bid button.” “The amount that shows up on the bid button, ‘click to bid at $5,000’ for example—that’s what the auctioneer is asking right now,” Shologan said. Your audio might not keep up, depending on your connection. You might hear the auctioneer asking for $4,500 when the bid button shows a higher amount. Always go by the bid button. “The bid button, and the amount asking on your screen, take precedence over the audio connection,” Shologan said. The game isn’t the same This relates to the “bid quick and bid early” advice, Shologan says. “Don’t wait too long to place your bids. If you hesitate when trying to bid over the computer, you will lose out.” Stalling or bluffing or getting in a late bid, all the psychological games of buying at auction, don’t apply to onlinbidding. “You can do that when you can see what’s going on. But when you’re dealing on a computer you can’t, because the auctioneer can’t see you. It takes that little bit out of it,” he said. “Bid quickly. Don’t wait for it to slow right down thinking that you’re going to be able to place a last bid because that definitely won’t work.” Keep sale-day phone numbers handy “In case something goes wrong on your end, make sure you have some sale-day phone numbers written down and available to dial in,” Shologan said. “That’s one of the important things. It just comes down to being prepared.” The numbers you need will be listed in the sale catalogue. Now, go get that bull. Brian GOOD

Brian Good on July 5, 2000 was named the Marketing Coordinator for the Canadian Angus Association. Born and raised in the Red Deer area, Brian has had a life long interest and involvement in the Angus breed.

He was raised in a purebred family Angus operation, Black Browe Cattle Co.

Good, who has been with the CAA for the past 21years, was part of the working group that organized the first LMAC Livestock Auctioneering Championships.

In 2019, Brian was recognized for his contributions to LMAC and the livestock industry with the designation of LMAC Industry Champion Award. He is one of only three people to receive this prestigious award. Brian also represented the Canadian Angus Association abroad on many occasions in places such as China, the USA, Mexico, Russia and the United Kingdom. Brian spent many hours promoting the Angus breed to the many commercial producers along with new breeders. Brian Good travelled to many Auction Marts promoting the use of the Angus Tags. Brian understood the industry and what was needed to promote the breed to new breeders and the benefits of Angus cattle to the Commercial industry. Manitoba Angus would like to thank Brian for all his expertise and wish him well in his retirement Feb 28, 2021 from the Canadian Angus Association. Brian has been called one of Canada’s greatest Ambassadors of the livestock business. He has earned the respect of cattle producers across Canada and around the world.

Brian Good attended many Angus Feeder Sales around Manitoba left photo and in 2015 awarded the Canadian Auction Mart of the Year to Heartland Livestock, Virden. Right photo: Drillon Beaton and Robin Hill of Heartland, Virden and Brian Good, CAA

Man/Sask Rep. Business Development Team Report—Bob Toner As I sit to write this it looks like Mother Nature has finally decided to put winter behind us. Some areas which recently received snow were happy for the moisture while others are looking to the skies hoping for moisture in any form. Hopefully the rains will start soon, to help relieve the pressure. The bull sale season is close to wrapped up. Overall it was pretty good with both purebred and commercial producers stepping up and bidding deep to acquire the bulls they believe will move their programs forward. The commercial replacement female market has been strong to steady as people replace older or less productive females with new ones to advance their herds. At this point I would say the moisture situation in a lot of areas will dictate how this market goes moving forward toward turnout time. Speaking of turnout time, now is the time to start your culling process for this fall’s and next spring’s bull sales. Be sure to be diligent as decisions made today, both culling and breeding, will impact your operation down the road. There were more than 9,500 Angus bulls offered for sale this spring, not including private treaty offerings. If nothing else this shows how competitive the sales can be and how many different options producers have. Make the tough decisions to maintain or expand your market share. I did get to a few sales this spring. Although the crowds were smaller because of COVID-19 restrictions, those in attendance were there to do business. It was a good feeling for me and everyone I spoke with to be able to get out and see some people. I'd also like to give a big shout out to all the people who provided online services this spring. These folks put in countless hours and days working with producers and sales managers to make every sale as successful as possible. You all know who you are. Thank you for your dedication! One of the highlights for me this spring was attending the Shortgrass Sale and presenting Bob Switzer and Family with their award for 75 years of continuous CAA membership. This is a huge milestone for any operation and the Switzer family looks like it will be around a while yet with the third and fourth generations being very involved in the Angus business. Congratulations Bob and family! As we move forward, many events are still up in the air with the ever-changing COVID-19 situation. Keep an eye on social media and the CAA website for updates on coming events. In closing I would like to send out a special salute to Brian Good for his years of service and dedication to the CAA. It didn't seem like you could go anywhere with Brian where he wasn't recognized as the face of Canadian Angus. If there was someone new at an event Brian would always do his best to reach out to them and strike up a conversation. Brian was, and will remain, someone I reach out to for advice and a sounding board for what's on my mind. Brian and Lynanne, enjoy your retirement and I will " See ya down the road." Bob Toner
