BREEDER PROFILE

Black Meadows Angus/ B and A Walker Farms Ltd. Bill and Allan Walker, Miniota, MB WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ANGUS CATTLE FOR YOUR PROGRAM?

The best balance of all traits was the reason our family chose the Angus breed.

YEARS INVOLVED IN THE ANGUS BREED?

Black Meadows Angus was started by Larry & Janet Walker in 1958. The herd started with 3 bred heifers. In 2008 the farm was honored to receive the “50 Year Award” from the Canadian Angus Association. Today the herd consists of 220 females. Herd bulls are sourced from across Canada and from within. A.I. is utilized to infuse new genetics. Around 50 to 80 head are bred by A.I. each year. Between 50 and 90 heifers are bred each year.

INVOLVEMENT IN LOCAL AG. GROUPS, 4-H OR IN THE MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION?

Over our long history we have been involved in all levels of the MAA and CAA serving on boards of both. All aspects of the Angus business has been our way of life. We hosted or co-hosted at least 4 summer pasture tours over the past 62 years. There was extensive showing in the 70’s and 80’s at small country fairs, Ag Ex, Agribition and the Toronto Royal. Virtually everything MAA did, we were there, enjoying the many great people who love the Angus breed. Test Stations were a big page in our history where we enjoyed immense success. We have in the past and still do, sponsor many Angus events, Ag Ex Banners, 4-H Beef, Manitoba and Canadian Junior Angus events. We grew up with the development of many of our present day programs, such as helping get the MAA newsletter started with Resby Coutts, being part of the formation and launch of the Keystone Klassic Female Sale and participating in the initial test slaughter runs of the Certified Angus Beef Program. WHAT ARE SOME TRAITS OF THE ANGUS BREED THAT YOU HAVE INCORPORATED INTO YOUR PROGRAM?

As mentioned earlier we try to maintain a consistent balance of all of the great traits the Angus cow has to offer.

DO YOU USE THE ANGUS GREEN TAGS AND HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR ANGUS?

We have used the RFID Angus green tags since they were first offered. Bulls are marketed off the farm as are the bred females in the fall. All backgrounded steers are sold through Angus feeder sales and Heartland Virden.

DO YOU USE ANY NEW TECHNIQUES ON YOUR CATTLE FARM? FOR EXAMPLE VERIFIED BEEF, GRAZING, OR ANY OTHER COMMENTS ON YOUR PROGRAM? We use a twice over rotational grazing system on mostly natural pasture, along the Assiniboine Valley. All rations are homegrown, consisting of Alfalfa, Barley and Corn Silage. Alan manages our 4,000 acre grain and seed processing operation and Bill manages the cattle operation. Angus is all we have known our whole lives. We have never owned anything but Angus. The friendship and quality of people in our business is what makes the Angus so great! It is part of our proud past and an opportunity filled future! Thanks to the Walker family for the their breeder profile.

Editor’s Corner

Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick This maybe the hardest Editor Corner to write as this spring has been one no one would have ever predicted. As farmers we have had to go on as usual calving and feeding cows and now preparing for seeding. We are usually self-isolating most of the time just going about our jobs and producing top quality beef and food for our consumers. One of the pluses for farming is we get to enjoy working in the outdoors, watching the wildlife, seeing those newborn Ƥ ǡ and quiet of mother nature. Let’s appreciate what we have as farmers and enjoy our surroundings. Some tough decisions had to be made this spring with the social distancing rules, crowd numbers and safety reasons events like the Winter Fair, CAA Annual Meeting, Summer Fairs, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, and Showdown in Brandon have to be cancelled until 2021. Hopefully by the fall shows , sales and the MAA Annual Meeting we will be back to a new normal and ready to get out and enjoy the fellowship we all need in our lives.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hope everyone came out of the winter in good shape, that your calving went well, and if you are just starng your calving, I wish you good luck. For the uncharted territory that is out there in the world right now, from what I have gathered the bull sales were good with some beer than previous years. With the way Sales had to be run this year due to the pandemic, I believe there will be changes coming in the way cale are marketed in the future. As I am sure everyone knows, due to the situaon in the world right now, the anadian Angus meeng in New Brunswick as been cancelled for this year, along with the Junior Angus Showdown that was to be held in Brandon. From what I understand, Showdown will be held in Brandon next July so that is something to look forward to for next year already. As for our 2020 Summer Gold Show, Harding Fair has just been cancelled so it is cancelled along with it. The weather has definitely turned & hopefully the temperature will connue to rise and people can get on their land to get their seeding done. Here’s to mely rains and warm weather throughout this year’s growing season. Without queson 2020 has started out with its fair share of challenges but hopefully we are geng through this pandemic & turning the corner to returning to a somewhat normalcy. Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everybody for all the good wishes, oers of help and support as I connue to recover. STAY SAFE, STAY STRONG, STAY HEALTHY Dallas Johnston NOTE: The Manitoba Angus Associaon is sll doing tokens for the H Beef members with Angus projects. Please contact MAA Secretary

Mandi Fewings at mandi.mbangus@gmail.com if your club would like to request tokens. Some may have been hesitant to apply this year we believe because of the pandemic, but we sll want to support those members and make sure they get a token for their hard work done with their Angus project.

GOAL CONFERENCE by EMMA HARMS

In the middle of February I had the opportunity to travel to Calgary for the Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference. Over the course of three days, Angus Juniors from all over Canada listened to presentations and seminars from various industry experts. One presentation that stood out to me was Michelle Miller’s, “A Look Inside a DNA Testing Lab”. Michelle is the General Manager of Neogen Canada. Her knowledge has sparked my interest to perform more genomic testing in my family’s herd. Another highlight from the conference was touring Angus Central. While there, we enjoyed a Canadian Beef demonstration from chef Cameron Pappel. Cameron works with the Canadian Beef Center of Excellence to promote the use of Canadian Angus beef in restaurants worldwide. His enthusiasm and love for our beef made me proud to raise Angus cattle. Throughout the weekend, I had the chance to hear from Manitoba’s own, Naomi Best. She shared her experiences awarded through the Canadian Junior Angus Association. All of her accomplishments have inspired and motivated me to apply for more scholarships, bursaries, and awards. I never realized how many opportunities and programs are available for Juniors. This experience was a trip of “firsts” for me. My first time flying by myself, visiting Calgary and attending a GOAL Conference. I cannot say enough good things about this conference and the memories that were made. The amount of information you can gain is incredible and so important for young cattle producers.

5 Ways Food Sustainability Drives Better Consumer Interest Modern consumers are demanding food that is sustainably sourced and raised. As a result, most food brands are strengthening their commitment to sustainability policies and practices. Also, the rising awareness in consumers is pushing the Agrifood industry towards improving the accessibility of sustainably-grown food across the country. Consumers want to feel good about what they are eating. Greetings!

It’s been an interesting last few months to say the least. The world events and the events within our province still seem a bit surreal. The added challenges of the social distancing rules has created new obstacles for us as producers but we are resilient and we will overcome them. Bull sales have almost wrapped up and producers are beginning to transition from calving to breeding and searching for that dry bit of ground to turn cows out on. Summer shows and events have either been put on hold for now with a decision to come closer to the date or have been cancelled. CJAA Showdown was to be held in Brandon this summer and we have just received notice that it has been Cancelled! We are still planning to host the annual Keystone Klassic Sale on November 21st and we welcome everyone to send their nominations in.

Good luck to everyone as you finish up with calving, begin to move cattle to pasture, and get out in the fields. The times right now appear very uncertain but I know as producers we are very strong willed, hard working, and we will get through this. I look forward to the day when we can all gather together once again and enjoy all the great events and hospitality within our breed and industry. Keep your heads up, stay healthy, be safe and check on your family, friends, and neighbours. Dylan Funk Vice President, Manitoba Angus Association

Get Well Wishes are going out to our MAA President, Dallas Johnston & to Barry Young. We wish you both all the best and a speedy recovery!

Attention Purebred Angus Producers!!!! Throughout the spring as you’re driving down the road delivering bulls, take some time to think about the Commercial Cattlemen and their operations that you are supplying Angus bulls for. It is the commercial producer who keeps the Purebred Producers in business! There are many commercial cattlemen across Manitoba who have used Angus bulls or have had a mainly Angus cow herd for years with great dedication. Some will be very large operations and some may only have 60—80 cows but have used Angus for the lifetime of their herd. Take some time to get to know these producers and a little about their operations. The MB Angus Association would like to recognize more of these cattlemen. Please send in your nomination for “Commercial Producer of the Year” for a commercial producer who is dedicated to having Angus influence in his herd. Nominations will be received by mail or email (Deadline Oct. 31st, 2020) and selection will be made by the board. The recipient will be notified of the award and invited to attend the AGM, where a presentation will be made. This is a chance to recognize a dedicated producer. Please provide a brief history on the individual with the nomination. DEADLINE for NOMINATIONS is Oct. 31st, 2020 Mail to: MB Angus Association c/o Mandi Fewings Box 172, Pierson, MB R0M 1S0 or email to mandi.mbangus@gmail.com

Tim Baker of Greenbush Angus named Honorary President for 2019 First, I would like to thank the Manitoba Angus Associaon for the nominaon of honorary President. I take great honour in this as I am the third generaon in my family to have received it. My Grandpa Bob, my dad Barrie and now myself. As you can see the Angus business has been part of me since I could walk. My first animal was gied to me by my Grandpa and she was also my first 4-H project. I was on my way. I built my herd with purchases over the years as a young 4-Her from my dad, Mountain View Farms, Eastondale Angus and from a gentleman that would become a close family friend, Jack Hart, Brookmore Angus. It was Jack who started me down the road of pitching in and helping the Manitoba Angus Associaon. I started out as the Jr. Ambassador, that had a beer ring than the previous tle Manitoba Angus ueen. At those first MAA meengs I was surrounded by some great people of our breed, Ruby Simpson, Grant Wilson, Lois McRae, to name a few. Once I had out grown the Jr. Ambassador tle and returned home from my post secondary educaon, I was elected and served many years as a director with the MAA. Serving 2 years as president. Being able to serve on these boards with the great people, made going to the meengs such an enjoyable event. Yes, we did our work as directors but we enjoyed the fellowship of each other. Hell, if it wasn’t for the MAA and serving as President, I wouldn’t have met my wife Wendy at an Annual meeng in Calgary. On the farm we built our herd over the years and were part of the original group that started the Caleman’s Connecon Bull Sale, striking out to sell an unheard of number of Black Angus bulls in Manitoba at the me in the mid 90’s. MVF, Brookmore Angus, Dryland Angus and Greenbush Angus did just that. We sold many females and a few bulls through the Keystone Klassic sale, we weren’t in the first sale but over the next 20 plus years we didn’t miss one. Great mes were had at those sales, with many friends made that have stood the sands of mes as they say.

I have taken a step back from the Angus business and downsized to a small herd of 20 cows. Our children, Cora and Carson have the Angus bug as well, and have been acvely showing at 4-H and Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup for years now it seems, so Greenbush Angus will be in good hands. Thanks again, Tim Baker - Greenbush Angus

Man/Sask Rep. Business Development Team Report—Bob Toner "Interesting." I guess that would be one way to describe the events affecting us all this spring. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly changed how we operate. For me, it meant getting off the road on March 18 and retreating to what I've nicknamed my "bunker" and working from home. So far, so good. The wife and I are still kinda talking.... Before I go any further, there is an army of people out there who need a HUGE THANK YOU! All the people at DLMS, DV Auction, Livestock Media Plus, Liveauctions.TV and TEAM, all the sales managers, ringmen, order buyers, all the producers who had sales in the middle of this and all the people who supported the sales by making purchases: Thank you!! In order to survive, we must all adapt and move forward, and with all your combined efforts, you made it happen. Although it was totally different hosting these events, I'd have to say that for the most part the spring bull run was pretty good. We still have to run the numbers to compare stats from last year but we will share that information once all results are in. Watch for details in the monthly Angus Advisor newsletter. Over the last few weeks I've been contacting producers by phone to visit and simply touch base. It seems that for those who sell bulls privately, things were going along pretty good until mid-to-late March when physical distancing measures increased and businesses began closing down. Hopefully as we get closer to turnout time for our commercial producers, these sales will once again pick up. Cows still have to breed and crops still need to be planted to feed the world. I've said it once and I'll say it again: the people in our ag sector are a resilient bunch and we will pull through this! There will be better days ahead. There have been a number of events cancelled or postponed including most or all 4-H shows and sales. These young people have put a ton of time and effort into their projects and now face the reality of not being able to showcase and market their animals. If you can in anyway, or know someone who might be looking to put some excellent 4-H beef in their freezer, please reach out to the 4-H leaders and members in your community. These kids and young adults are our future and deserve the support. Here's to timely showers, green grass, fat calves, bumper crops and getting back to normal! See ya down the road, hopefully soon! Bob Toner

A Picture is worth 1000 words As the saying goes, ‘A picture is worth a 1000-words.’ Whether we are scanning through a magazine, Facebook, or the web, there is no question its most often a picture that catches our eye and draws our attention. It might be because of the lighting, the scene, or the image in the photo, or in the case of the cattle business, the animal in the photo. In the seedstock business, photos are essential and can help a producer share their message clearly .AI’ing, haying, and many other chores that overwhelm the day, before we know it, another year has passed by and we missed our opportunity to take photos of our breeding stock. I often write feature stories about seedstock operations and always enjoy visiting with the producers learning about their cattle, their goals, their family, and their accomplishments. Recently, while interviewing a ranch manager RI D ZHOO HVWDEOLVKHG VHHGVWRFN KHUG , UHDOL]HG KRZ HDV\ LW LV WR RYHUORRN DQ LPSRUWDQW HOHPHQW RI WKH PDUNHWLQJ PL[ ďż˝ SKRWRV When I asked the manager to send me 5 or 6 photos to include with the story, I was not expecting the response I received. “Goodness, I don’t know if we have any new photos,â€? he said, “I guess I’ve been so busy focusing on the genetics of our operation, that I have not made taking photos a priority for quite some time. This seedstock operation was to be featured in a national publication, an opportunity to reach current and potentially new customers. As a result of this situation, I want to encourage you to take every advantage you can this summer to beef up your photo inventory, so that you are well equipped when a future marketing occasion comes along. As a seedstock producer, focusing on formulating a unique and solid genetic base to produce top-end females and sought-after herd bulls is important but having the tools you need to market your program is also vital. Steps to consider when building your photo gallery: 1) Start snapping photos -)RUWXQDWHO\ ZH DUH LQ WKH GLJLWDO DJH DQG QR ORQJHU KDYH WKH KDVVOH RI EX\LQJ Ă€OP DQG WKH ODJ time waiting for the photo to be developed. With digital cameras and cell phones (equipped with a quality camera as well), the number of photos you can snap is endless. Begin taking photos when you send the cows out to grass and continue to do so throughout the summer season as the calves mature and the cows are demonstrating their true maternal factory. Remember, not every photo needs to be of your prize cow or cherished herd bull. You want to represent the depth and strength of your full genetic base. Good photo options include the cowherd as a group or portion of it; bull calves you may market in your sale next spring; cow/calf pairs that depict your breeding program; working ranch photos such as branding time, moving cattle to a new pasture, feeding time, etc. Take photos at different times of the day and even though cattle always look great out on the green summer grass, it is okay to have photos from all four seasons. Everyday photos show the environment the cattle are produced in and give viewers a truer sense of your operation. 2) Picture perfect or not -Not every picture has to look like you hired a professional photographer. Sure, if you are going to run them in a print advertisement, you need a high-resolution photo for the best print quality (thus make sure your cell phone and/or camera are set so for high resolution), but life on the ranch is natural and not every photo has the sun just perfect, the sky blue, and the grass green. Demonstrating your cattle with as the saying goes, ‘their working clothes on,’ can be just as effective. You may end up with trees, fences, equipment, or other distracting elements in the background of photos, but if you take enough and always remember variety you will also have some with backgrounds of wide-open spaces. After many attempts if you don’t think your photos are what you want to represent your ranching operation, or photography is just not your thing, then seek out a professional photographer to assist in building your photo gallery. 3) Tell a story -The last time you sat down to update one of these marketing outlets, what type of photo did you wish you had? Marketing in 2020, is no longer just print advertising. Websites, Facebook, Instagram, online sales, and other digital and social media outlets are all becoming effective tools to reach your customers. Therefore, as you gather up photos, be thinking both the marketing outlet and the most effective photo for that outlet. Videos are very popular across all marketing segments. Keep in mind, you can apply many of these tips when taking and gathering videos as well. 4) Develop an Inventory System-I have taken thousands of photos over the years, and I still do not have this tip mastered. Photos can be uploaded to folders on your computer and archived either by date, what the photo is of (cow/calf pairs, KHUG EXOOV HWF ORFDWLRQ RU DQRWKHU LGHQWLĂ€FDWLRQ WLWOH 3KRWR JDOOHU\ ORJJLQJ V\VWHPV WKDW DUH DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK PDQ\ RI WKH photo or computer software programs can also be effective. Determine what inventory systems works the best for you and stick ZLWK LW 7KH HQG JRDO LV WR Ă€QG D V\VWHP WKDW LV VWUHDPOLQHG DQG HIĂ€FLHQW )XUWKHUPRUH LI \RX KDYH D FRPSXWHU ZKLFK LV XVHG E\ several family members and you have a good-sized gallery of photos you are storing on the computer, I suggest you purchase a remote hard drive to backup the photos and other important documents. It just takes one computer crash and there goes your ranch history. Remote hard drives cost about $100 - $200 depending on the size, its money well worth spending. 5) It is not all about the cows -Yes, you are in the cattle business, but this industry has proven to be a people business as well. We want to see the faces behind the cattle – the family. Photos of your family, extended family, herdsman, and others who are responsible for the cattle should also appear in your marketing platforms. Special occasions like anniversary celebrations, graduations, 4-H Achievement Days, and other awards or recognitions for your farm and family are important to highlight and document in photos.

Be proud of the fruits of your labor and share the pride you have for your seedstock business by telling your story through photos and videos. It’s never to late to start.

Canadian Junior Angus Showdown 2020 Rescheduled for 2021

May 5, 2020 Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) has made the difficult decision to cancel our National Junior Angus Show, Showdown 2020, scheduled for Brandon, Manitoba this July due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of our members and their families are our priority and with the uncertainty of what the summer will bring with the virus, government regulations and travel, cancelling the show was really the only responsible option available to us. We are disappointed that we will not be able to get together with our Junior Angus family this summer, however we look forward to heading to Brandon next July 22–24 for Showdown 2021. Any 2020 entries received will be refunded and sponsors will be contacted regarding refunds and/ or deferring their sponsorship to next year’s show. The CJA board are working on details for a Showdown 2020 Online Challenge to engage with members across the country July 20–25, so please watch the CAA website and our social media channels for more information on the Challenge in early June. We encourage your participation! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to any CJA board member. Stay safe and healthy. ================================================================== Changes to Canadian Angus Board Policy on Parentage Verification Requirements

Meatloaf

1 cup Whole Milk 6 slices White Bread 2 lbs. Ground Beef 1 cup (heaping) Freshly Grated 1/4 tsp Seasoned Salt Parmesan Cheese 3/4 tsp Salt Freshly Ground Black Pepper 1/3 cup Minced Flat-leaf Parsley 4 whole Eggs, Beaten 10 slices Thin/regular Bacon Sauce: 1/3 cup Brown Sugar 1-1/2 cup Ketchup 1 tsp. Dry Mustard Tabasco To Taste Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour milk over the bread slices. Allow it to soak in for several minutes. Place the ground beef, milk-soaked bread, Parmesan, seasoned salt, salt, black pepper, and parsley in a large mixing bowl. Pour in beaten eggs.

With clean hands, mix the ingredients until well combined. Form the mixture into a loaf shape on a broiler pan, which will allow the fat to drain. (Line the bottom of the pan with foil to avoid a big mess!) Lay bacon slices over the top, tucking them underneath the meatloaf. Make the sauce: add ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and hot sauce in a mixing bowl. Stir together. Pour 1/3 of the mixture over the top of the bacon. Spread with a spoon.

Congratulations to Kyle & Larissa of Hamco Cattle Co. on the safe arrival of a baby girl, Nyla Coreen Curtis on April 2nd, 2020. A baby sister for Nova!

Bake for 45 minutes, then pour another 1/3 of the sauce over the top. Bake for another 15 minutes. Slice and serve with remaining sauce. Serve with mashed potatoes. Yummy!
