LET’S ENGAGE

YOUR OPINION ON CULTURAL APPROPRIATION What is cultural appropriation? Determining whether something constitutes cultural appropriation can be complex and context-dependent. Cultural appropriation generally refers to the adoption or use of elements from another culture, often without understanding or respect for its origins. The key considerations include power dynamics, historical environment, and the intention behind the adoption. In the first image, the seemingly White woman is dressed in Asian clothing and makeup while in the second image, the African couple wearing a suit and wedding dress from European Christian traditions. Ultimately, whether an action is perceived as cultural appropriation depends on various factors, including the specific cultural elements involved, the context, and the intentions of the individuals involved. It’s important to approach these discussions with sensitivity and an awareness of the broader historical and social environment. We invite you to share your views and questions on the topic with us.
