NAVIGATING ‘COLOURED’ - A SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT The term ‘Coloured’ carries distinct meaning in South Africa compared to the rest of the world. In the South African context, “Coloured” is a unique and deeply ingrained racial identifier, representing a diverse community. This population, with roots tracing back to racial mixing from the apartheid era, has grown into unique cultural identity that encompasses various linguistic, religious and societal elements. However, outside of South Africa, the term takes on a different meaning and is often viewed through the lens of race, carrying historical implications related to segregation and discrimination. The global understanding of ‘Coloured’ as a racial term contrast with its nuanced cultural significance within South Africa, highlighting the importance of considering historical and regional perspectives in discussions surrounding identity and nomenclature. When discussed on social media platforms, we see how the bridges of awareness are crossed. Popular singer Tyla is a South African chart topper who has found success in the United States. When the topic of her race comes up, and she confirmed that she is Coloured, fans and non-fans engaged in interesting debates; with Americans taking offence to her use of the word, and South Africans being quick to share insights of what Coloured culture is.
