Great Benson Derby this weekend  $10,000 worth of prizes to be awarded over the weekend It’s Great Benson Fishing Derby time Fishermen from across Vermont will travel to Bomoseen this weekend to participate in the 47th annual Great Benson Fishing Derby.

Sponsored by the Fair Haven Rotary, the derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.

Derby headquarters is located at Lake Bomoseen’s Crystal Beach on Route 30

North in Castleton.

Tickets are $25 and $5 for children under 12. Tickets will be sold until noon on Saturday. Tickets sold between noon Saturday and Sunday afternoon will be eligible for the raffle only.

Fish categories include all legal species freshly caught on legal Vermont waterbodies and Lake Champlain from 12 a.m. Saturday till 3 p.m. Sunday.

Multiple fish may be entered per category, however, only one prize per person per category will be awarded. In the event of a tie, the prize will go to the

fisherman who gets his fish on the boards first.

There will be plenty of prizes to go around – some $10,000 worth. Of that sum, $5,800 is earmarked for “big fish” prizes with the remaining $4,500 set aside for “big cash” raffle prizes. Cash prizes include one $1,000 winner; three $500 winners; four $250 winners and 10 $100 winners. You do not have to fish to win a cash prize in the raffle.

Wanted: Vernal pool monitors

By Jared Stamm Vernal pools, also called vernal ponds or ephemeral pools, are seasonal water pools that provide crucial habitat in a short period each spring for a diverse collection of wildlife.

Despite their important role, vernal pools remain poorly understood and face an uncertain future because of the effects of climate change, airborne pollutants and development.

Vermont has some 5,000 potential or con-

firmed vernal pools. “Some are in the Green Mountain National Forest, and others are right next to roads or literally in people’s backyards,” said Alex Wells, who is working at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies through Vermont’s ECO AmeriCorps program.

In the Rupert/Pawlet area alone there are more than 70.

Pools Continued from front page A vernal pool has four general characteristics: It has a seasonal wet and dry cycle, it’s not connected to other water bodies, it contains no fish and it must provide habitat to a vernal pool indicator species, such as wood frogs or spotted salamanders who have adapted their entire life cycle to the vernal pool environment.

“The environment is exciting because it’s so dynamic,” said Wells. “In addition to providing key habitat for wood frogs and spotted salamanders, they’re important for the functioning of the whole forest ecosystem.”

Vernal pools feed raccoons and bats, they improve water quality, they help cycle nutrients in the forest and, said Wells, “they’re keystone ecosystems, meaning that for the amount of space a vernal pool takes up, it has a big impact.”

Wells coordinates VCE’s Vermont Vernal Pool Monitoring Project.

“We have basic location data for a ton of pools, but we don’t know much more about them, for now,” he said.

Because of that, the monitoring project is currently recruiting volunteers to visit vernal pools three times in the spring and once in the fall to help establish a baseline of data with which to compare future changes, and to increase

Fair Haven seeks ‘Pet Mayor’ Fair Haven Grade School is collaborating with the Town of Fair Haven to raise money to improve the school’s playground.

Town manager Joe Gunter has created a fundraiser to elect the first Pet Mayor of Fair Haven. Students and their families can put their favorite pet on the pet ballot for a registration fee of $5.

Other students will make presentations about Japan and China in April and Georgia and the Philippines in May. The programs will be downstairs at the library. There is an accessible entrance on the north side.

Blood drive at Long Trail Long Trail School will host an American Red Cross blood drive on Monday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school.

Help the Red Cross fulfill its mission of ensuring the availability of a safe and reliable blood supply in our area. Each pint collected can assist up to three patients in need. The entire process takes about one hour and 15 minutes.

Cross-border police crackdown Granville Little League registration beginning Ten police agencies from Vermont and New York performed nearly 200 traffic stops and issued more than 100 tickets as part of crossborder crackdown Friday.

‘Sylvia’ opens at Dorset Playhouse next weekend The Dorset Players present A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia” on two weekends in March, FridaySunday, March 1-3, and Friday-Sunday, March 8-10, in Dorset.

Kate is passionately reinventing herself as a teacher of Shakespeare while Greg, on the other hand, has become disillusioned with the corporate world and wants out.

Greg brings home a dog he found in the park – or that has found him – bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag.

As Greg becomes increasingly attached to Sylvia, Kate’s dislike of the dog intensifies and an unusual love triangle emerges.

The characters of Tom, a fellow dog walker in Central Park, Phyllis, a former classmate from Vassar and Leslie the psychotherapist who counsels Greg and Kate, round out the cast, each offering his or her own take on the situation.

The play at times is hilariously funny and at others tender as it explores the trials of marriage and the bond between a man and his dog.

“Sylvia” is directed by Cheryl Gushee, produced by Paul Michael Brinker and Peggy Blumental. Rebecca Nawrath is stage manager.

Granville Little League announces that online registration is open for the 2019 Little League season.

The 2018 season was a great success. Little League had approximately 350 participants across all levels last year with 27 teams.

The league hosted the Southern Adirondack Youth League Baseball Playoff Tournament as well as its third annual All-Star Tournament over a two-week period, which consisted of 68 games played with 15 different communities represented.

During the season, renovations were completed at the concession stand had renovations completed, including upgrades to the bathroom facilities. The league was also able to begin accepting credit cards for concession stand sales as well as registration payments.

The pavilions that previously were located on the back side of the park were relocated to the front of the concession stand to help provide cover for the league’s newly donated picnic tables.

Fundraising efforts were extremely successful with the support of the community this past year. These fundraisers included the bat-a-thon, coin drop, chicken BBQ, and raffle ticket sales. The league raffled off a $100 VISA gift card, a 50” 4k TV, and as a grand prize four tickets to Yankees vs. Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, which included an overnight stay in NYC. The league continues toward its goal of lighting the clover field complex and have purchased the poles necessary for the project.

The new season will be exciting for everyone.

Celebrating 20 years of Brandon Artists Guild The Brandon Artists Guild is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a series of themed exhibits honoring our planet. The series will run from March through October, with each show lasting two months. The first exhibit, “Art of the Earth,” opens March 1 and runs through April 30. The public is invited to the opening reception Friday, March 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit series represents a departure for the 20-year-old artists guild. “Rather than having our traditional single-artist exhibits, we decided to invite all our exhibiting members to contribute to four group shows based on a single theme,” said artist Judith Reilly. “And what better subject than the Earth, where we draw our inspiration from?”

In addition to “Art of the Earth” in March and April, the remaining exhibits are “Art of Wood,” from May 3 through June 25; “Art of Water,” from June 28 through Aug. 27; and “Art of Fire,” from Aug. 30 through Oct. 29.

Campus news Gadway on dean’s list at Alvernia Shannon Gadway of Poultney has been named to Alvernia University’s dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester.

As a senior in the fall, Gadway studied forensic science at Alvernia. Gadway is a graduate of Poultney High School.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a minimum of 12 credits.

Godfrey makes Plattsburgh dean’s list Jordan Godfrey of Castleton was named to the fall 2018 dean’s list at SUNY Plattsburgh.

To be eligible, undergradu-

Rutland winter hospice volunteer training The Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Southwest Region is providing training for those interested in becoming hospice volunteers.

Training will be held on Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 in the Rutland office. Training is free and open to the public.

Preregistration is required for the training. Once training is complete, assignments and schedules are tailored to the volunteer’s geographic and time commitment preferences.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and need to pass a background check. No previous hospice and health care experience is required.

Hospice volunteers provide comfort and support to patients facing terminal illness, as well as respite and support to their families. Volunteer training covers the basic principles of hospice, how to understand the special needs of patients and their families, effective communication, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual caregiving, and understanding grief and loss.

Hospice volunteers are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and in using

appropriate words to comfort patients and their loved ones at the end of life.

“Whether someone is interested in providing direct or indirect support, hospice volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team,” said John Campbell, hospice volunteer coordinator. “Hospice volunteering allows exceptional caring individuals to use their gifts and skills to help provide patients, caregivers and families with the most peaceful and comfortable end-of-life experience possible…and there are benefits to our volunteers. Not only do our volunteers tell us they have a deeper understanding of death and dying, but they also gain an enriched sense of other cultures and beliefs and have an enhanced sense of fulfillment to the community.”
