The Vermont Center for Ecostudies needs volunteers to monitor ephemeral pools in spring.

Wanted: Vernal pool monitors By Jared Stamm Vernal pools, also called vernal ponds or ephemeral pools, are seasonal water pools that provide crucial habitat in a short period each spring for a diverse collection of wildlife. Despite their important role, vernal pools remain poorly understood and face an uncertain future because of the effects of climate change, airborne pollutants and development. Vermont has some 5,000 potential or con-

firmed vernal pools. “Some are in the Green Mountain National Forest, and others are right next to roads or literally in people’s backyards,” said Alex Wells, who is working at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies through Vermont’s ECO AmeriCorps program. In the Rupert/Pawlet area alone there are more than 70.
