After the parade at dusk, lake resident Rick Roberts will launch his annual fireworks display over the lake. First-ever Castleton post-parade party July 4 Castleton will host its firstever Fourth of July post-parade town-wide party on Thursday, July 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The party will feature food trucks, music, ice cream, barbecue, games and family fun on the Castleton town green. “Everyone is in a celebratory mood after the fabulous parade, so we thought, ‘Why let everyone just leave? Let’s celebrate some more!’” explained Mary Droege, Castleton resident and member of the Bridge Initiative, which is organizing the party with the Town of Castleton. “Anything we can do to bring people together so they can get to know each other and work well together is a worthwhile effort, and we’re happy to help,” said town manager Mike Jones. With the town’s participation, the Bridge Initiative – a

group of town residents and Castleton University personnel – was able to quickly organize the party at the town green. Many local groups and businesses will be joining in, including 4H with ponies, giant puppets from the Governor’s Institute of the Arts, the Castleton Recreation Department, Castleton Village School and Elementary School with games and crafts, Castleton University with disc golf and information on summer activities, the Bridge Initiative, Castleton Historical Society, the Lions Club, Climate Solutions, Slate Valley Trails, 350 Rutland, Same Sun and Friends of the Castleton Library with giveaways and information. More groups are being added daily. Music will be provided by the popular local Green Brothers Band with guitar,

bass and drums. In addition to a variety of food items, there will be children’s games and crafts, a “visioning board” where residents can share ideas about the town’s future, ponies to pet, face painting, free books and more. In addition to celebrating Independence Day, the party will commemorate Castleton’s receiving Village Designation from the State of Vermont, which will bring new opportunities for grants to enhance the town. The Bridge Initiative is composed of Town of Castleton residents and Castleton University personnel working to foster bonds of understanding and good will. The initiative has been raising awareness of resources for learning, enrichment and entertainment, and developing innovative joint ventures since 2015. Tickets for the barbecue will go on sale at 10 a.m. and

continue until they are sold out. The generous meal will include the fire department’s famous half a barbecued chicken, coleslaw, chips, roll and a soda for $10. “The firemen and their friends start really early in the morning, and they have a special sauce they use,” said Reid. “It’s half a chicken, and it’s good,” she laughed. Meals may be picked up beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Auxiliary kitchen will be open all day offering coffee, donuts, soda, salads, burgers and dogs at family-friendly prices. “This year, we’re trying to raise enough money to do our kitchen over. We have a pancake breakfast once a month there, and it’s just not big enough anymore,” said Reid. Tickets for the giant raffle with more than 70 prizes will cost $1 each or $5 for six tickets.

Top prizes will include a Telescope Furniture patio set, a box seat at a Glens Falls hockey game from Aerus, a one-day party boat excursion from EZ Marine in Wells and a “super surprise” from Mars Insurance Agency. Prize drawings will begin at 2 p.m. Vendor spaces are available until Sunday, June 30, at a prepaid, nonrefundable price of $10 for an inside table and $15 for an outside 10’x10’ space. Tour de Slate ‘riding to end addiction’ The Tour de Slate “riding to end addiction” bike ride will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, with a ride through the Slate Valley of Vermont and eastern New York. “Tour de Slate will change lives,” said event coordinator Stan Achey. “All of this fundraiser’s net proceeds go directly to cover the expenses of men, women and teens ready to turn their lives around and break the chains of addiction at Teen Challenge Vermont.” Teen Challenge Vermont, serving Vermont and New York State, is a 15-month, faith-based residential facility with an admissions office on West Street in Rutland City. No one is ever turned away because of their financial circumstances or inability to pay, which is why fundraising is so crucial. When asked about the success of the Teen Challenge program, Teen Challenge Vermont program director Warren York shared, “I came to Teen Challenge Vermont broken, hopeless and suffering from the

perils of drug addiction. My friends and family did not want me in their lives. Today, through the skills and training of the program, my loved ones are proud of who I have become – a constructive member of society who wants to help others overcome addiction.” Last year’s event was a huge success on many levels. One participant in the 2018 ride shared these thoughts: “Of all the fundraising bike rides I’ve participated in Teen Challenge Vermont’s Tour de Slate was the most enjoyable. Where else can you experience such great mountain scenery while supporting a wonderful cause? For me the highlight came at the conclusion of the ride. Great food and personal stories of youngsters finding a new life in recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism.” The event is designed so that there is a ride route for everyone. There are three road routes, including a metric century ride (100 km, 63.4 miles) and also a “family friendly” rails/trails route. Volunteers and rest stops

will be positioned to aid riders along the way. All rides will start and end on the green in Middletown Springs, Vermont. Riders will receive a Tour de Slate T-shirt and a drawstring backpack goodie bag. An authentic Indian chicken curry dinner will be served free of charge for riders and volunteers at the finish line after the ride. The grill also will be ready to fix hamburgers and hot dogs. Organizers hope this year’s ride will raise more than last year’s total of $17,633.59. All those funds directly supported the care, clinical counseling and educational and career services for clients at Teen Challenge Vermont. Register to ride online at www.tourdeslate.org. Donations may be made at the same website or mailed payable to “MSCC/Tour de Slate,” PO Box 1012, Middletown Springs, VT 05757. Contact Stan Achey for more information at info@ tourdeslate.org or 802-558-0934.

On July 5, 1852, Douglass, a former slave and leading abolitionist, begged the “race question” at an event in Rochester, New York, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “Fellow-citizens,” he began, “Why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day? What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?” By hosting such events during the celebration of this nation’s independence – its freedom from Great Britain and its tyranny – the community is invited to think about and discuss race and citizenship now, more than a century and a half later. Hildene joins the Vermont Humanities Council, Community Change Inc. and others in this statewide effort. The text of this speech, as well as accompanying materials, are available online at the Vermont Humanities Council website, www.vermonthumanities.org. For more information, contact stephanie@hildene.org or call 802-367-7960. Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, is located at 1005 Hildene Rd., Manchester, Vermont.

On July 4th 1776, the final draft of the Declaration of Independence was signed. At that time there were an estimated 80,000 soldiers in the Continental Army which later became the United States Army. Today there are over 1.4 million active military personnel serving in the US Armed Forces. There are an additional estimated 2.17 million retired US veterans who have served our country. AND, if you want to really appreciate our military, and the freedom we enjoy because of them, research how many soldiers have been killed or wounded since 1776. The number is unbelievable! Freedom comes at a very high price. On this July 4th, please remember all the military—past and present—who gave, and give, so much that you and I can celebrate this day and enjoy “---Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness— “. Because of those who serve we enjoy freedom, given by the constitution that many other countries will never have. Yes, our founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, but our military, then and now, make freedom possible.

Mettawee students travel the world . . . by reading The poet Rainer Maria Rilke once said, “Ah, how good it is to be among people who are reading.” The Austrian-born Rilke was the inspiration for this year’s Books and Beyond program at Mettawee Community School, which encouraged students and parents to explore diversity by “reading around the world.” This academic year’s reading achievements were celebrated at an all-school assembly on Tuesday, June 11, at the school. Reading has a rich tradition at Mettawee Community School. Each September students and parents develop and sign off on a Books and Beyond plan that aims to create lifelong readers. The school year is divided into eight segments, or stations, which must be completed by the end of May. Assignments range from picture books for kindergartners to chapter books for older readers. Benchmarks are established at various points throughout the school year for students, parents and teachers to monitor progress. Students, for example, are encouraged to complete at least four stations that can be reviewed during parent/teacher conferences in February. The school augments the annual reading program with an all-school read in March and a book fair in April. Students also create posters to celebrate their reading accomplishments and to decorate the school. Each year, the Books and Beyond program has a theme.

Reading achievements at Mettawee Community School were celebrated at an all-school assembly on Tuesday, June 11. For 2018-19, the focus was on “reading around the world,” allowing kids to explore diversity by reading about other countries and cultures. “It is time for us to teach our young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength,” said school principal Brooke DeBonis. “Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing and celebrating one another’s uniqueness.” That sentiment was on full display at the reading celebration on June 11. Every single student was recognized on stage for accomplishing their personal reading goals. Parents, families and friends were in the audience. The kids sang songs from around the world, participated in a Mexican hat dance and listened to a special reading of Australian writer Mem Fox’s “Whoever You Are,” by school librarian Kelly Ahlfeld. The second grade was given the honor of announcing that $102.86 had been raised by

Mettawee students for Heifer International’s Milk Money for Africa Program. The natural food company Bear Nibbles provided reusable book bags for the students along with healthy snacks and international trading cards. Kimberly Donaldson, Mettawee teacher and literacy interventionist, served as both the producer of the June celebration and as the overall manager of the 2018-19 Books and Beyond program. Throughout the year, Donaldson was ably assisted by fellow teacher and literacy interventionist Lauren Kelly. The 2018-19 school year and Books and Beyond celebration may be over, but the reading tradition at Mettawee Community School continues. The day after the ceremony the cycle begins again with students reading over the summer to earn a Six Flags/Great Escape pass for next summer. At Mettawee Community School the students read. All through the year.

Fair Haven summer Fridays kick off with car show Fair Haven is kicking off its summer Fridays with a tip of the hat to local police departments on Friday, June 28, at 5 p.m. The afternoon will feature a police car show, an opportunity to meet Fair Haven’s K9 unit, a 50/50 raffle and the chance to socialize with friends and neighbors over hot dogs.

Events through the rest of the summer include Fair Haven’s annual summer chili cook-off on July 12, a magic show with Blain Goad on July 19, “touch a truck” with the fire department and an historical society tribute to Fair Haven’s fire services on July 26, a dance demo hosted by a local studio on Aug. 2,

CONGRATULATIONS TO TAYLOR MERRITT ... our Patient of the Month! “I chose Vermont Sports Medicine Center because it is the closest center near Green Mountain College and I heard great things from people in the athletic department at college. I definitely believe that without the staff at VSMC, I would not have recovered as quickly as I have. I am happy to say that I am finally running and almost fully recovered! After my initial surgery I thought I would never run the same again, but thanks to my therapists, I am running confidently and am excited to start playing soccer again in the Fall. I would absolutely recommend VSMC to anyone seeking physical therapy ... with their friendly environment, support and motivation, anyone can succeed!” Photo (l to r): Sarah Steves, PTA, Taylor Merritt & Casey Circe, DPT

Frederick Douglass speech reading July 3 at Castleton Free Library Castleton Free Library, Main Street, will host a participatory reading of a famous Frederick Douglass speech on Wednesday, July 3, at 6:30 p.m. On July 5, 1852, Frederick

Douglass was asked to speak at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Douglass’s speech, “The Meaning of the Fourth of July

for the Negro,” remains emotionally powerful and thought-provoking more than a century and a half after Douglass first delivered it. The library will have copies

available to read from. A link to the speech may be found on the library’s website, www.castletonfreelibrary.org. The reading will be held on the front steps of the library,

weather permitting. This program is free, accessible and open to all. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 802-468-5574.

Poultney Public Library book sale and youth flea market July 6 Poultney Public Library will hold its annual book sale on Saturday, July 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held rain or shine. Books will be set up outside of the library, weather-permitting. In the case of bad weather, the sale will be moved into the library’s Rosenthal Room. The sale will feature a wide selection of high-quality, highinterest books. Hardcover and trade paperbacks will start at 50 cents each, and mass-market paperbacks will start at 25 cents each. The sale will include DVDs for $1 each and new, old and collectible books that are individually priced. This year the library will also have an assortment of puzzles and games for sale. Come at 8 a.m. to get first pick, then come back at 1 p.m. for discounted prices at the bag sale. Please note that the library will not be able to accept donations of books and materials for the sale during the sale. Also on Saturday, July 6,

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the library will sponsor its annual youth flea market on Main Street. The Youth Flea Market is open to kids and teens up to age 18 and is a great way for them to earn money. Popular ways to participate in the past have included selling unwanted toys, handmade jewelry and art, as well as setting up bake sales and lemonade stands. The flea market also provides an opportunity for youth organizations to hold fundraisers. Registration forms may be picked up at the library. Completed forms are due at the library by Friday, July 5. Participants must bring their own tables, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration fee is $5 per table. For more information on the library’s book sale or the youth flea market, call 802-287-5556 or stop by the library. Poultney Public Library is located at 205 Main St., Poultney, Vermont.
