Sound of Music SALEM One of the theater world’s most beloved musicals will take the stage at Fort Salem Theater this weekend, when California’s Rose Center Theater presents “The Sound of Music” Friday through Sunday.

Based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Sound of Music is set in Austria in 1938, when Maria was employed as governess to the large family of Captain von Trapp.

She eventually married the widowed c a p - tain and the family is forced to flee the Nazis when he refuses a commission in the German Navy.

Many songs from the musical such as “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things” have become standards.

The Sound of Music will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 and at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 26. The Fort Salem Theater is located at 11 East Broadway, Salem.

Saturday25 Fishing Tourney COSSAYUNA For the 13th year, the Jerry Simon Jr. Memorial Bass Fishing

Tournament returns to Cossayuna Lake at 6 a.m., Saturday, June 25.

“It’s a nice, relaxing family tournament,” said organizer Jerry Simon, Sr. Fishermen of all ages are invited to participate.

Registration takes place the day of the event at 6 a.m. at the New York State Boat Launch at the north end of the lake. The “catch and release” tournament allows both artificial and live bait.

All fish must be New York State legal and must be alive at time of weighing.

Weigh-in will take place at 11 a.m. at the Cossayuna Lake Improvement Association docks on East Lake Road. First, second, third and fourth place prizes will be awarded. Simon noted that 50 percent of the tournament proceeds will be awarded in prize money; the remainder will be donated to the CLIA. In the children’s category, 100 percent of the tournament proceeds will be paid out.

Cossayuna Lake is wellknown as a good fishing lake, and there have been some large bass caught through the years at the tournament. The biggest was an 8-pound bass, said Simon.

“The quality of the lake has improved 200 percent over the past 10 years,” he commented.

“It’s a great fishing lake.”

Simon founded the tournament in memory of his son, who loved to fish on Cossayuna.

Heritage Days this weekend in Fort Edward

Fort Edward’s traditional two-day festival, “Heritage Days,” returns this weekend with a full slate of events beginning at 3 p.m., Friday, June 24 and running through Saturday, June 25.

The family-friendly event, which draws about 2,000 people each year, features a variety of entertainment and activities for all ages.

On Friday at 3 p.m., vendors and rides will open to the public. DJ Dubray will kick off karaoke at 5 p.m. World of Hurt Wrestling featuring Fort Edward’s own Alden Brothers will hold a meet and greet at 5 p.m., followed by a show at 7 p.m.

Also at 7 p.m., the Jonathan Newell Band will perform.

Following the performance at 10 p.m., a giant fireworks display will be set off over the river.

On Saturday, the festival opens at 11 a.m. with a parade that steps off from the Washington County Building and proceeds down Broadway through the village. This year’s parade will include a Pooch Parade, which will line up on

McCrea Street.

From 2-4 p.m., children ages 5-13 are invited to participate in the Kids’ Olympics, which will feature events such as a sack race, egg race, obstacle course and hula hoop race. Last year’s Olympics wrapped up with a giant water balloon fight.

Magician Joey DiDonna will dazzle the crowd with a magic show at 4 p.m. At 5, World of Hurt Wrestling will host a meet and greet, and musician Phil Camp performs. A wrestling show will take place at 7 p.m.

Music continues from 7-10 p.m. with Lewis and the New Imperials. Saturday’s events will be capped off with fireworks.

Throughout the festival, attendees can enjoy carnival rides such as a roller coaster, giant slide, swing and strawberry ride, among others.

Wristbands for unlimited riding will be available. Other activities include face painting, a hair braiding booth and ice cream from Stewart’s.

It often looks like a crusty, red patch of skin. n Melanoma begins in the melanocytes, the cells in the epidermis that give the skin its color. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer because it can quickly spread into the lymph system of the body and organs.

Melanoma can form in a preexisting mole or form a new mole.

Skin cancer can affect anyone, and overexposure to the sun, a key risk factor for skin cancer, can occur at any time of year. Whether it is a hot, sultry day spent by the pool or a chilly day skiing the slopes, any exposure to the sun can result in skin damage that can increase a person’s risk for skin cancer.

Plus, certain areas of the body are more susceptible than others.

How does skin cancer form?

When DNA, the material that encodes genetic information in all cells of the body, is damaged and the body cannot repair that damage, a person’s risk for cancer increases. Damaged cells begin to grow and divide uncontrollably.

Damaged skin cells that divide and spread can cause skin cancer. Because skin cancer tumors generally form in the outer-most layer of the skin known as the epidermis, skin cancer may be more readily apparent and detectable than many other cancers in the early stages.

The American Academy of Dermatology says that 1 in 5 Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, while the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation says that basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, affects 50,000 to 60,000 Canadians each year.

Where is skin cancer most likely to appear?

The study indicated that melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, has increased by eight times for women under the age of 40 since 1970. Even children can get skin cancer. A study in the journal Pediatrics found that the number of

cases of skin cancer among children and adolescents has been increasing each year by about 2 percent.

Types of skin cancer There are three main types of skin cancer. They include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. n Basal cell carcinoma occurs in the basal cells, which are the lowest level of the epidermis. It can appear as a shiny translucent or pearly nodule, a sore that continuously heals and then reopens, a pink slightly elevated growth, reddish irritated patches of skin, or a waxy scar.

Exposure to sunlight is the leading cause of skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. While the rays of the sun may be more intense during the summertime, any exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer. The sun can reflect off of snow and become concentrated. No matter how many layers a person wears during cooler weather, the head and neck area tends to remain exposed to the sun’s damaging UV radiation year-round.

Skin cancer is most likely to occur in people with pale skin who have a tendency to burn or freckle when exposed to the sun. But everyone should be diligent and cover up when spending time outdoors.

No one is immune to skin cancer, and the change of seasons does not lower a person’s risk of getting the disease. Anytime a person is in the sun he or she runs the risk of UV exposure that can lead to skin cancer, which highlights the importance of taking preventive measures to safeguard yourself from skin cancer.

UNDERSTANDING SUN POISONING A trip to the beach is an enjoyable way to spend a day. With warm waves lapping at your feet and a good book to enjoy, hours relaxing at the seaside tend to pass by quite quickly. While such days are often comfortable and relaxing, if you aren’t careful, you may be putting yourself at risk of sunburn and sun poisoning.

Sunburns are never a good thing, but sun poisoning can be even more severe and the symptoms can become quite serious and uncomfortable. Despite what the term “sun poisoning” implies, the sun does not poison the body.

Rather, the term describes sensitivity to sunlight that results in a wide range of symptoms that can affect the skin and body as a whole. Sun poisoning can occur when one has a sun allergy, called solar urticaria. This is very rare.

However, the greatest number of sun poisoning cases are simply a severe form of sunburn.

Depending on the pigmentation of a person’s skin and the severity of the sun, sunburn can occur in mere minutes. Many people can get a sunburn within 15 minutes of being in the sun.

The sun’s rays are most potent between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., making the majority of the day a prime time for

skin damage.

Although sunburn can occur quite quickly, many people do not realize anything has occurred right away. That’s because sunburn symptoms can be delayed. It may take a few hours for redness to appear and discomfort to set in.

Staying in the sun too long without wearing adequate protection, whether it be a widebrimmed hat, protective clothing or ample amounts of sunblock, can lead to sunburn. Over time, sunburn can progress to sun poisoning.

Symptoms of sun poisoning include a severe sunburn accompanied by blisters on the skin. Pain and tin-

gling may occur, as well as swelling where the sun touched the body intensely. Sun poisoning also may cause fever and chills, nausea, dizziness, and dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, as the body’s immune system attempts to kick into action.

The best treatment for sun poisoning is prevention. Avoid blazing sun whenever possible and use sunblock and reapply frequently if you must be out in the sun for any duration of time.

Otherwise, some cases of sun poisoning can be relieved with the application of cool compresses or by taking cool (not cold) baths. Application

of aloe gels also can alleviate discomfort, in addition to taking a pain relieving NSAID pill.

If at any point a fever occurs and spikes to more than 104 F, or if there is extreme pain and vomiting, head to the emergency room. Doctors may have to quickly reduce swelling and inflammation and administer fluids intravenously to get the body back on track.

Keep in mind that blisters from sun poisoning can get infected, so it is adviseable to keep the skin clean and avoid picking at or popping blisters.

Discuss any concerns about severe sunburn with a doctor.

Frequent sunburns can be linked to accelerated skin aging and can put a person at a higher risk for skin cancer.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, but UV light from tanning beds is just as harmful. Cumulative sun exposure causes basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe blistering sunburns, usually before age 18, can cause melanoma later in life.

Sun poisoning and sunburns are nothing to take lightly. These conditions are easy to prevent by being smart about sun exposure.

Recognize and prevent repetitive stress injuries Repetitive stress injuries, or RSIs, can impact muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Though The Mayo Clinic estimates that three million people in the United States are affected by such injuries, some may not fully understand just how they reached a point where they are suffering from an RSI. RSIs are a condition that occurs when too much stress is placed on one part of the body, typically a joint, over and over again, resulting in inflamma-

tion and potential tissue damage. RSIs typically happen when a person repeats the same movements again and again. It comes as no surprise then that RSIs are commonly experienced by athletes and office workers.

The elderly are most affected by RSIs, but these types of injuries are also known to occur in younger adults and children. These injuries tend to develop over time and tend go unnoticed in their early stages.

Prevention is the best defense against RSIs. Start by using proper equipment at all times to help keep the body protected and in neutral positions.

Such equipment may include support devices for wrists or knees, and shoes that fit well and provide ample support.

Athletes should make sure their gear is properly sized to their bodies. Using the wrong size tennis racket, for example, may contribute to elbow strain when serving and hitting.

Proper nutrition also is key.

Consuming the right foods is essential to developing and maintaining strong muscles, which help support joints in the body. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist if you suspect your diet has room for improvement.

RSIs can be troublesome for office workers. Maintaining neutral body positioning is the best defense against pain and injury, according to the pain prevention resource Tifaq.com. Tifaq. com suggests following these procedures in addition to stretching and exercising at the office:

n Keep your head level, forward facing and in line with your torso. n Feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest. n Shoulders can be relaxed and arms hanging normally at your sides. Your elbows should be at about 90-degree angles. n Support your back with a lumbar support or a small pillow. n Sit vertically or lean back slightly while at your desk. n Keep frequently used items close by so you do not need to stretch. n Position your monitor so it is directly in front of you and at eye level. n Take frequent breaks to stretch or take a walk around the office.

Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis, and trigger finger. Always consult with a doctor if pain from routine activities is persistent. Individuals may benefit from working with a physical therapist to learn strategies to avoid RSI activities.

Childhood obesity becoming a huge problem According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese.
