Wishing our Friar Families a relaxing and safe summer break!

Dear Friends

Congratulations to the Class of 2025! These remarkable young men have created a lasting legacy at Malvern Prep that will endure for generations. Their success stems from their dedicated effort, unwavering family support and guidance, and the commitment of Malvern Prep’s faculty and staff. I am grateful for their impact on our school, each other, and their younger Friar brothers. I wish them every success as they leave Malvern Prep. I hope that they know they are always welcome to return to campus. Our faculty, staff, and their Friar brothers look forward to welcoming them back. Our theme for this past academic year was Malvern. Forever. The theme served as a rallying cry to all community members, calling attention to our history—which was unsteady at times—and expressing the importance of our school’s sustainability for future generations of Friars. Malvern. Forever. also served as the theme of our historic $65 million comprehensive campaign, which launched publicly in October 2024. At the time of publication, I am thrilled to share that we are 90% to goal for the campaign. Malvern. Forever. marks the most ambitious campaign in our school’s history, and its success is due to the generosity of so many members of the Malvern Community who remain dedicated to our school, our mission, and our values. I sincerely thank all members of our community for their incredible generosity in supporting this campaign.

For the first time in several years, Malvern’s campus enjoyed a pause from major construction activity. The opening of the Vic Maggitti Pavilion in fall 2024 marked a significant milestone, and with it came a chance for the campus to breathe and settle into its new rhythm. Students, faculty, and staff are making full use of the state-of-the-art Pavilion and the newly connected Riley Hall. In addition, Caritas Court—a vibrant outdoor recreation space featuring basketball hoops—also opened this fall. It’s been a joy to see students gathering there in community, making memories with their Friar brothers.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 academic year, we plan to begin construction on a new Student Life Center. With an opening date in the 2026-27 academic year, this will be the first student building to sit outside of ‘Ring Road,’ an outward sign of our growth. The facility itself will be complete with a data analytics lab, teaching kitchen, wellness and mindfulness studio, modern classroom space, and locker rooms.

I look forward to welcoming new students and families to our community. I wish all of you a happy and safe summer!

Best,

St. Augustine Church:

The Augustinians’ First Community in the United States

The first two Augustinians on American soil were Rev. Matthew Carr, O.S.A., and Rev. John Rosseter, O.S.A. They arrived in America from Ireland to provide spiritual direction, support, and education to German and Irish Catholic immigrants in Philadelphia, who were being discriminated against because of their nationality and religious beliefs. Carr and Rosseter founded St. Augustine Parish in 1796, just 20 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

By 1838, the parish was thriving with over 3,000 members. But just six years later in 1844, anti-Catholic rioters burned St. Augustine’s nearly to the ground. Philadelphia’s majority-Protestant residents were increasingly wary of the waves of European Catholic immigrants coming to the city. When Philadelphia Catholics and the Church hierarchy protested the mandated study of a Protestant Bible in the public schools, anger erupted into violence. St. Augustine’s— as well as St. Michael Catholic Church, the convent of the Sisters of Charity, and dozens of homes of Catholic families— went up in flames.

St. Augustine Church, as it stands today, was reconstructed in 1848. It was designed by Napoleon LeBrun, the architect of Philadelphia landmarks such as the Academy of Music and the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, with the tower designed by William Strickland, who designed the iconic tower of Independence Hall. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, during the United States bicentennial celebration.

The Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova is beginning a process to renew and revitalize St. Augustine Church. “We are serious about preserving the parish, and we are committing our greatest resource—Augustinian Friars and friends—to this apostolate,” says Prior Provincial Rev. Robert P. Hagan, O.S.A. “We are on the cusp of celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary next year. What should St. Augustine’s look like for the next 250 years of this nation?”

St. Augustine Church is as much a part of our city’s history as the Liberty Bell (and it even has the Sister Bell of the Liberty Bell inside!). Next time you’re touring the historic sites in Old City, be sure to visit. It is a beautiful place to rest and reflect on almost 230 years of Augustinian history!

St. Augustine Church is located at 243 N. Lawrence Street, Philadelphia. For more about this historic church and an inside look at the community of friars that lives there, scan this QR code to read the latest issue of The Augustinian magazine.

Middle School Students Perform

On January 24 and 25, 2025, Middle School students performed

The SpongeBob Musical, Youth Edition, on the Duffy Arts stage. Landon Nichols ’30 played SpongeBob Squarepants, with Flynn Kelley ’31 as Patrick Star, Helena Taylor

Ervin as Sandy, and Maggie Taylor Ervin as Squidward. The performance took the audience to Bikini Bottom for an all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! mp

Upper School Students Perform

In March, the Malvern Theatre Society brought a vibrant and energetic performance of Footloose to the Duffy Arts stage. Inspired by the 1984 film, the musical follows the story of Ren McCormack, played by Nolan Murphy ’25, a teenager who moves to the small town of Bomont, where dancing and rock music are banned. Ren, with the help of his new friends, fights against the oppressive rules and challenges the town’s beliefs, all while trying to bring back joy, freedom, and dancing to the community. mp

Living Stations Come to Life in Duffy Theatre

Now in its 17th year, the Living Stations again came to life on the Duffy Arts stage this spring. This year’s Tableau Passion Play featured student performers from Malvern Prep and Villa Maria Academy, accompanied by contemporary music performed by the Malvern Men’s Chorus.

Under the student leadership of senior directors Nolan Murphy ’25, Nick Gazzillo ’25, and Evan Cooper ’25, the performance offered a moving and powerful depiction of Christ’s passion and resurrection. A highlight of this

year’s production was the debut of 6th grader Keegan Heffelfinger, who delivered a touching solo performance of Neil Young’s “Philadelphia.”

Special thanks to those who made this production possible, including the talented student performers, Mr. Ed Liga (musical direction), Mr. Rob Muntz P’26’30 (lighting and sound direction), and guitar accompaniment by Mr. Jason Sammartino ’04 mp

MALVERN PREP HOSTS ANNUAL Learning Demonstration Day

On Friday, March 21, across Malvern Prep’s campus, demonstrations of learning were on display. This annual event allows students to demonstrate and celebrate their thinking, learning, and doing.

“Students have an amazing ability to design and showcase projects, presentations, and performances. This happens every day around campus—whether it’s in the classroom, through independent study, or otherwise. We believe that taking the time to celebrate and recognize these accomplishments should be a critical part of who we are as a school,” shared Mr. Tom Pannulla, Head of Academics.

This ‘open campus’ day celebrated learning in all its forms, highlighting our Augustinian Values and fostering a deep sense of community.

Additionally, the School announced that it has been awarded a $91,000 grant from the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education, a philanthropic organization founded to strengthen Catholic education within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The grant will be used to establish and introduce the Catholic Values & Launchpad Collective, a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by

Malvern Prep in partnership with the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education. This partnership is designed to provide a supportive, faith-rooted environment where Catholic school educators can incubate new ideas, develop sustainable implementation plans, and drive meaningful change, without competing with the day-to-day demands of their roles.

“Our faculty and students are designing solutions every day in support of the Common Good. Malvern Prep is excited to be chosen as the lead incubator school for this important grant from the Ambassador’s Fund. These monies will go a long way in supporting educators at Malvern and across the diocese with the tools they need to create and innovate for today’s world,” shares Dr. Patrick Sillup, Head of School.

This celebration of learning showcased the creativity, dedication, and innovation of Malvern Prep’s students and faculty. From gallery walk presentations and mini-lessons to the announcement of the Catholic Values & Launchpad Collective, the day reinforced the School’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, community, and innovation. mp

Malvern Prep Hosts Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day

Malvern Prep’s Middle School proudly welcomed more than 200 special guests to campus on April 14 to celebrate Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. The event offered a meaningful opportunity for visitors to experience a morning at Malvern Prep and witness firsthand the remarkable achievements of our Middle School students.

The day began with an Adeodatus reflection delivered by Dylan Pellegrini ’29, who shared heartfelt thoughts on the significance of grandparents in our lives. “When I think of grandparents,” Dylan remarked, “the first thing that comes to mind is the unconditional love they show us, whether it’s spending time together, offering encouragement, providing wisdom, or something as simple as a hug. Grandparents play an essential role in keeping family

traditions alive by connecting the past to the present.”

Dr. Patrick Sillup, Head of School, reiterated this sentiment, “Our goal at Malvern is not merely academics. It’s about cultivating something deeper: character, purpose, direction. We work hand-in-hand with families and with all of you to ensure that, beyond skills and grades, these young men develop a compass that will guide them for life and a network that will support them any time and every time they need it.”

The morning was a joyful celebration of our Middle School students and the cherished guests who support and inspire them.

Thank you to all who joined us! mp

CLASS OF 2026 Celebrates Junior Ring Mass

On April 25, the Class of 2026 and their families gathered in sacred celebration for one of Malvern Prep’s most cherished traditions, the Junior Ring Mass. The liturgy marked the culmination of a day-long retreat centered on fellowship, reflection, and the enduring strength of Friar Brotherhood.

The Mass was presided over by Rev. William Gabriel, O.S.A., who called upon the junior class to renew the commitment they first made at their Brotherhood Ceremony as freshmen. Fr. Gabriel encouraged the young men to embrace not only the words, “Friar Brotherhood, Forever in our Hearts,” but to embody them in daily life, through action, character, and faith.

During the celebration, Tommy Onderdonk ’26 reminded his classmates that Brotherhood is not merely a word or an idea, but a lived experience. “It is the teammate who lifts you up after a loss, the classmate who helps you when you fall behind, or the friend who stands by you even when things get tough,” he shared. “Brotherhood is what transforms this place into not just a school, but a second home to us.”

The junior rings and school pins, blessed during the Mass, are a powerful symbol, an unbroken circle representing the bond formed within the Friar Brotherhood. It also serves as a visible commitment by Malvern Prep’s Class of 2026 to lead with purpose and serve the Common Good, both within the Malvern Community and beyond. mp

Malvern Prep Celebrates Fourth Annual Caritas Carnival Around Campus

On Wednesday, April 30, Malvern Prep transformed its campus to host the fourth annual Caritas Carnival. In partnership with Sow Good Now, the school hosted over 200 children from area elementary schools (St Agnes, St. Laurentius, St. Peter the Apostle, St. Patrick’s, and St. Laurence) who would otherwise not be able to enjoy a field trip with their classmates.

Kelly Catania P’21’23, Director of Christian Service, and Mary Nassib P’08’11’14, Founder of Sow Good Now, led the event planning and execution.

“The Caritas Carnival idea surfaced post-COVID when I realized the entire nonprofit landscape was dramatically changing. What better way than to share our beautiful campus with children from schools who, by no means, can offer a fun-filled day,” explained Catania.

All Upper School students, faculty, and staff participated as volunteers to make the day a success. They were joined by Malvern Prep parents and members of the Bill Atkinson Service Corps. “From the joyful faces at the petting zoo, the choo-choo train, and the hayride, to the delicious lunch, hot dogs, cotton candy, and face painting—every moment was a beautiful reflection of God’s love working through our children. It truly was a special day to be part of the Malvern Family,” shared Catania. mp

MALVERN PREP Celebrates Earth Week

Malvern Prep’s campus was full of activity as the community celebrated Earth Week.

The week began with the Spring Spruce-Up at the Rosengarten Ranch on Tuesday, April 22. Students, faculty, and staff joined Dr. James Fry and his team to prepare the garden beds, clear away debris, enrich the soil, and ensure the space was ready for the upcoming spring planting season.

On Wednesday, Malvern Prep’s scholar-in-residence, Dr. Jordan Ermilio, led a Lunch & Learn on the Water-FoodEnergy Nexus and the interconnectedness of these three systems related to sustainable development and resource management. Dr. Ermilio shared his experiences in the Philippines as a case study on how the Water-Energy-Food Nexus functions in the real world. He highlighted the environmental, health, economic, and social justice challenges he encountered while carrying out a rural water and electrification project as a water resource engineer.

The Earth Fair was held on Thursday, April 24, and included a sustainability pledge table, Earth Week-themed treats, and seed planting. In addition, members of the Beekeeping Club were on hand to explain the process of making honey.

Rounding out Earth Week, the 5th Annual Tree Blessing and Planting took place on Friday, April 25. Fr. Bill Gabriel blessed the lot and prayed for the tree to grow bright and strong. Senior Environmental Club leaders Declan Abromavage and Sean Martin shared thoughts from Pope Francis on the environment, including his “urgent challenge to protect our common home,” before planting a Lavender Twist Redbud tree in the Quad. mp

Twenty Friars Inducted into the Bellesini Honor Society

On May 7, Malvern Prep proudly inducted 20 students into the prestigious Bellesini Honor Society. The society is named in honor of St. Stephen Bellesini, O.S.A., the Augustinian Patron Saint of Students and Studies.

“We are honored to recognize these students for their academic integrity, grounded in our Augustinian mission,“ shared Dr. Patrick Sillup, Head of School. “It is not just about high achievement, it is about living the values we uphold— knowing yourself, knowing God through others, and building for a higher purpose,” he continued.

Members are required to assist in the Peer-to-Peer Learning Center; they also organize and run the Red Cross Blood Drive, Christmas Tree Lighting, and Community Appreciation Lunch. To mark the uniqueness of this recognition, each student is given a blue and white striped bowtie, which serves as a visual symbol of their achievement. mp

Malvern Preparatory School Receives

$5 Million Gift to Support Malvern. Forever.

In March, Malvern Prep announced a generous $5,000,000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis ’78. This transformational gift will support the construction of the Student Life Center, establish an endowment fund for operational expenses of the building, and provide ongoing support for the Malvern Fund. This comprehensive gift directly reflects the tenets set forth by Malvern. Forever.: The Campaign for our Future.

“Supporting the mission and students of Malvern Prep is very important to me. This gift supports and acknowledges the faculty, staff, and administration who tirelessly carry out our proud Augustinian mission on a daily basis,” said Mr. Davis.

Projected to open in the 2026-2027 academic year, the Student Life Center will serve our community with features such as specialized classrooms for programs like data analytics and health & wellness, state-of-the-art athletic locker rooms, and dedicated spaces for faculty supporting student life. mp

Malvern Prep Announces $750,000 Gift to the Robotics Endowment

In May, the School announced a combined gift of $750,000 to the Malvern Prep Robotics and Engineering endowment fund from the Edginton Family (All-Fill Inc.) for $250,000 and the Parsons Family (CTDI) for $500,000. The gift will bolster an already established endowment fund for robotics and ensure that it is fully endowed within the next several years. This transformational gift directly supports the endowment pillar of Malvern. Forever.: The Campaign for our Future.

Michael Parsons ’03, a member of the inaugural robotics team in 2002-03, views this gift as an acknowledgement of the program’s growth since that time and the impact that it continues to have on Malvern Prep students. “Malvern Prep Robotics has come a long way in 22 years. The innovation, creativity, and ingenuity taking place daily on campus are impressive. To be able to solidify the program financially and provide resources that are necessary for it to continue to be on the forefront of engineering and robotics is meaningful to the Parsons family.”

“The Malvern Prep Robotics team is a tangible example of the platforms that Malvern Prep provides to its students to develop as lifelong learners and servant leaders,” says Ryan Edginton ’99 P’28. “This gift will allow the program to evolve and better serve the students.” mp

Malvern Celebrates BASH LI

ONE MALVERN

Following the golden anniversary last year, BASH LI carried the momentum forward with a night that honored the legacy of this cherished event while looking ahead to Malvern’s future. On April 26, more than 250 guests gathered in the Donald F. O’Neill Sports Center to support Malvern Prep and the belief in ONE MALVERN—the theme of the event, and an extension of Malvern. Forever., our comprehensive capital campaign dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the Malvern Prep experience.

This year’s festivities featured elegant touches like a champagne wall and a blend of silent and live auction items. Guests were welcomed by previews of our upcoming capital projects showcased in the entrance hallway, along with an opportunity to Lock in Your Legacy by sponsoring a personalized locker in the soon-to-be-built Student Life Center.

BASH LI was graciously chaired by Mrs. Colleen Tegler P’27 and Mrs. Christine Pyfer P’27, whose dedication and leadership brought the evening to life. The BASH committee created an atmosphere full of excitement and anticipation.

While enjoying festive music from Del’s Groove, guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, dinner, and lively bidding. When the final auction was closed and the last donation was tallied, the event had successfully raised nearly $270,000, a testament to the continued generosity of the Malvern Prep Community.

Malvern Prep extends its heartfelt gratitude to each guest, volunteer, and donor who made BASH LI a success. This annual tradition not only honors our past but also paves the way for a future filled with boundless opportunity and the promise of Malvern. Forever. mp

Malvern Prep’s Friars React to the Election of Pope Leo XIV

Malvern Prep’s Augustinian Friars react to news of Pope Leo XIV’s election and share their thoughts on the impacts the new Augustinian Pope will have on the global Church and closer to home on Warren Avenue.

Featuring:

Rev. Christopher Drennen, O.S.A. ’73

Rev. William Gabriel, O.S.A.

Rev. Patrick McStravog, O.S.A.

Rev. Michael Riggs, O.S.A.

Around Campus

Q: How did our students react to the news of an Augustinian Pope, and how do you hope Pope Leo XIV will impact our students and their faith?

Fr. Drennen: I think they're very excited about it. [His election] bridges the gap between something you don't talk about and something that you're proud to talk about.

Fr. Gabriel: I would agree. There's a sense of feeling like they are connected to the Pope, not only as Americans but also as Augustinians; that's a beautiful thing. Even students who do not outwardly practice their faith or talk about it have expressed such joy.

Fr. Riggs: Fr. Drennen and I teach Church History, and all year we've been talking about all the various popes that have been involved in the course of history, and now we're living through history. It makes students feel connected to all the things that we're learning about in class and makes it relevant to their lives to be part of this continuous line of shepherds of the Church. To have someone come from their own country speaking their own language and from their own spirituality is a big deal for them; you do sense it in the classroom. They're all excited about it.

Q: Talk about the significance of having an Augustinian as the leader of the Church. What do you think he'll bring to the papacy, being an Augustinian,

that might differ from popes that we've seen in the past?

Fr. Drennen: I think his sense of unity that he talks about is very much how we talk about Brotherhood. You know, the community gathering together, bridging gaps between different groups in the Church. That's what he spoke about right away: being a bridge builder.

Fr. Gabriel: We often talk about community. We're very community-oriented. We pray together, we eat together, we spend time together. It’s a gift that the leader of the Church has an Augustinian heart, which is restless for a sense of bringing people into communion with their differences and unique gifts. That will be something that's very much emphasized, because it's been formed into us as we went through formation for seven plus years.

Q: How do you describe the Augustinian charism, and how do you see that translating to the papacy?

Fr. Riggs: Augustine is called the Doctor of Grace, and grace really just means recognizing that we can't do anything on our own, that we always rely on God, God's help, and God's grace in our lives.

That acknowledgement grounds us. You could even say that humility is a secondary charism of the Augustinians, because humility is the remedy for pride.

This constant sense that we're always dependent on God, and we rely on him. It does make us more approachable. We don't have an ‘air’ about us. We're not living these lofty lives, taking charge from above. We're more interested in walking on the same level as people. I think that's something the Augustinians are especially well equipped to do.

Fr. McStravog: Rob Prevost [Pope Leo XIV] is an Augustinian, so from day one, he's driven to find the Truth, and now he's defending the Truth in unison with, of course, the universal Church. The Augustinians trained him and educated him. He knew when to get in the spotlight. He knew when to make his presence known. He knew when to act.

We’ve all now seen him on TV. The humility of the man comes out every time you see him. He walks among the people. But I think in terms of the Augustinian charism, he’s going to change the Church with that Augustinian identity. And it's not just an identity—it's in his heart. I hear it every time he speaks publicly when he's trying to make a point. He's always very Augustinian.

Fr. Gabriel: When he gave his first address on the balcony, he said, “I am a son of Augustine.” Showing that he didn't forget who he was. He then paraphrased Augustine’s quote, “What I am for you is a bishop, but what I am with you is a Christian. What I am for you terrifies me. But what I am with you comforts me.” That speaks

to the burden of leadership. But also when you come from that attitude of humility, of grace, of understanding who he is and who God made him to be in his own brokenness and own gifts. I think that the comfort of walking with people is what he's done all along.

Q: What do you consider the reward of ministering to the students here at Malvern Prep?

Fr. Drennen: Watching them grow up, watching them mature, and knowing them. The longer you're here, the more you watch them grow from grades 6 to 12. I'm more energized, even after class, when they’ve been fooling around. I'm more energized at the end of it than I was in the beginning. I just enjoy them.

Fr. McStravog: When I was teaching, I got the most joy out of watching these kids. Most of them realize how special Malvern is and how lucky they are to be here. That doesn't happen right away. It's usually as they get closer to graduating. It is also rewarding to watch their faith deepen. They're maturing physically, but more importantly, they're maturing spiritually. That's a big part of Malvern's mission—to help them realize that the faith they study is in their hearts. It's going to shape their lives.

Fr. Riggs: I get a kick out of seeing them interact with one another— lift each other up, give each other a hard time. It's the whole range of relating to one another. They're comfortable around each other. The Augustinian spirituality plays a part in their ability to be comfortable with one another and free to explore those relationships and friendships. It's been rewarding to watch it as an observer, but also to sometimes get involved myself in the way they interact.

Fr. Gabriel: I echo what my brothers have said—it's just amazing to see what you have the privilege of being a part of. These are formative years in young men's lives. It’s a privileged position to be a part of that as a mentor, teacher, or coach, but also as someone who represents faith and has committed their life to Christ and St. Augustine.

I recently shared a story about when the news broke about the new pope. I was away from campus, and a student emailed me a picture of Bob Prevost and wrote, “Is this your boy?”

This particular student is not someone whom I would characterize as engaged in the Catholic tradition and his faith. I responded, “Well, I wouldn't say that, but he is our brother.” He replied, “Well, then I guess he's my brother, too.”

Q: What advice would you give to our students—graduating students, Middle School students, new students that are coming into the school—as they get to know the Augustinian Brotherhood, or as they prepare to leave our Augustinian school for whatever lies ahead?

Fr. McStravog: The world is letting people off the hook in terms of being critical thinkers, because everything is so instantaneous. The search for Truth is important. The search for the Truth in terms of who God is and how the Truth is made present in your life is very important. When I think about students coming to an Augustinian school and as they move through, my hope is that as they graduate, they will work hard. And hopefully, they saw in us that we never stopped seeking the Truth. When Augustine talks about that, he's talking about faith, the presence of God. So my hope is that the one thing they learn from us is to continue to search for that Truth, however it manifests in their life.

Around Campus

Fr. Drennen: I want them to be open to what good things God can do in our lives that we don't expect or think we have the ability to do. The grace of God enables us to do more than we could ever do on our own, so be open about that.

Fr. Riggs: Never forget that you are loved. One of the interesting experiences I've had as a teacher is the MECO retreat. It's where they learn just how loved they are. They go through most of their formative years without really getting that. I would say that my advice to the seniors specifically is to never forget that, and also never to forget that the way that you have received love from others is your obligation to show that love and return it to all you encounter.

Fr. Gabriel: During ordination, you receive an embrace from the bishop who ordains you. I was ordained by Bishop Turley. When he embraced me, he just said, “Stay close to Jesus.” So, I think you could go through Malvern and be an amazing business person, a talented actor, or an incredible athlete. Life is going to throw at you what it will, and if we have young men who become men of humility and heart, who know who they are, how loved they are, but they stay close to God as their anchor, then I think I can sleep well at night. mp

PREP CELEBRATES

THE CLASS OF 2025

AT THE SCHOOL’S 99TH BACCALAUREATE AND COMMENCEMENT

Malvern Prep’s 99th Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement were held on June 1 and 2, 2025, respectively. This marked the first year that the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement were held separately.

The Baccalaureate Mass was held in Our Mother of Good Counsel Chapel and was presided over by Rev. Robert P. Hagan, O.S.A. T, Prior Provincial, and concelebrated by Rev. Christopher J. Drennen, O.S.A. ’73, Rev. William C. Gabriel, O.S.A., Rev. Gary N. McCloskey, O.S.A., ’69, Rev. Patrick McStravog, O.S.A., and Rev. Michael Riggs, O.S.A.

Continued on page 26

In his homily, Fr. Hagan acknowledged that AI would change the way we live, but he was not referring to technology, rather, he was referring to Augustinian Identity. “There will be times in your life when you really need something more than just your own strength. And you know what that is? Humility. As sons of Augustine, you know your AI (Augustinian Identity) is to be humble. You’ve heard it said before. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who are humble and those who are going to be. Life humbles us. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be afraid to fall. The great ones all do. And you get back up with the grace of God, with your faith, with your family, with your friends, with your AI,” he shared.

He reminded the graduating Class of 2025 that they are Sons of Augustine, just as Pope Leo XIV declared when he was elected Pope. “As sons of Augustine, you know what it’s like to fall and get back up with the helping hand of Jesus Christ, and then offer that helping hand to somebody else,” he stated, encouraging the graduates that God calls them to be great.

Following Mass, parents and their sons were invited to attend the Head of School Dinner Reception held in the O’Neill Center.

The following morning, Commencement Exercises were held on the Wolfington Plaza Lawn of Our Mother of Good Counsel Chapel. Family, friends, and the Malvern Prep Community

gathered together to pay tribute to the 124 seniors of the Class of 2025 for their accomplishments, commitment to service, and the strong bonds of brotherhood they have formed.

Michael Guardiola ’25 opened the ceremony as the Introductory Speaker and revealed that for the past eight months, he had suited up as the famous Auggie Tolentine mascot. “Being the school mascot helped me recognize all the opportunities that Malvern has given the Class of 2025 for self-exploration, risk-taking, and personal experimentation. Though every student hasn’t had the opportunity to suit up in Auggie’s thick, fuzzy costume, enormous helmet, and bare feet,

I’m sure that each graduating senior has had an experience where they’ve learned more about themselves. Malvern has changed each and every one of us,” he shared.

Addressing his classmates, Guardiola said, “Brothers in the Class of 2025, in our futures we’ll face many choices to try something new and expose our true selves. We’ll also face self-doubt or fear that holds us back from taking the step and learning something new about ourselves.” He encouraged his classmates to keep pushing and take risks so that they can encounter something so much bigger in their futures.

The Class of 2025 Student Speaker was Zade Smith-Johnson ’25 Smith-Johnson recalled feeling nervous when he started his Malvern Prep career four years ago, “I wondered whether I would feel included, whether people would understand me, and whether I truly would enjoy being here. What I didn’t expect, though, was how quickly this place became home and so much more than just school.”

He addressed his fellow graduates with encouragement, saying, “It’s impossible to summarize four years in a few minutes, but if there’s one thing I hope to leave behind today,

it’s this: Malvern taught me that stepping into the unknown is worth it. Even when it’s scary. Even when you feel out of place. Because on the other side of that fear is growth and joy, and people who will surprise you in the best ways. And now, as we prepare to take our next steps, all we carry are the lessons we’ve learned here. Wherever we go. Let’s keep seeking connection, not just with people who are similar to us, but with people who are different, because that’s where growth happens. Let’s hold on to the laughter and the friendships we’ve built. Let’s never forget how far we’ve come.”

Last to speak was Mr. Dave Frank ’91 P’20’25 PT, who provided an inspiring Commencement Address to the Class of 2025. Referencing a St. Augustine quote that is displayed in the Chapel: Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, Frank addressed the graduates, “Isn’t that your Malvern journey? You entered this beautiful campus, and you spend the next four to seven years trying to find your identity. You don’t know if you’re going to be part of the band, part of the water polo team. If you’re going to be in the stage crew or the choir. But each of you has made your mark here at Malvern.

Around Campus

And you’re prepared to start the next journey in life. And guess what? When you leave this campus, your hearts will be restless again. But I’m here to tell you that if you lead with your heart, you will always make the right choices as you embark upon your next journey. You were set up for success as a Malvern graduate, and the world clearly needs young men like you.” mp

FRIAR ATHLETES SCORE WITH OFFERS

TO PLAY AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL

The average number of students nationwide who go on from high school to play a sport at a Division I, II, or III college is just over 7%.

For Malvern Prep’s Class of 2025, the number is 35%—5 times the national average. To be a student-athlete requires a great deal of commitment, organization, and talent—both on the field and off. Friar Sports Highlights

The winter and spring sports seasons continued Malvern Prep’s tradition of athletic excellence. Our student-athletes celebrated individual victories and record-setting team achievements. We take great pride in their dedication and success on and off the field.

The winter season featured demanding schedules, with teams traveling to compete against some of the nation’s top athletic programs. Wrestling continued its dominance in the Inter-Ac and finished ranked among the top ten teams in the country. Winter Track placed 3rd at the PAISAA state meet and 11th at the PTFCA state meet, while Swimming earned 4th place at the National Catholic Championships.

This spring, we witnessed an unprecedented season, with Baseball and Lacrosse clinching Inter-Ac titles and three teams achieving championships at the highest levels; Baseball secured its third consecutive PAISAA Championship. Additionally, Rowing’s Varsity Quad won the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship; this win comes on the heels of an undefeated regular and championship season. And for the first time since 2014, Malvern Track & Field claimed the PAISAA Championship title.

We remain immensely proud of all our student-athletes. Thank you to the parents and fans who passionately supported the Friars this year. Enjoy a restful summer—we look forward to seeing you in the stands this fall!
