Bernie’s Journey

In 1960, Bernie's family made the difficult decision to leave Cuba after his father was placed on an enemy's list for refusing to cooperate with the government Despite their circumstances, his parents prioritized education above all else His mother had been a teacher, and his father often said, "Your education is the one thing that they can't take from you "

When it came time for high school, Bernie's parents were determined he attend a quality institution. Though he passed Malvern Prep’s entrance exam, the family couldn't afford the $500 tuition. His mother, whose family had a long relationship with the Augustinians dating back to Cuba, arranged to meet with the headmaster, Fr. Gilligan, O.S.A. She reminded him of her father's generous donation of land for Villanova University in Havana. Moved by this legacy, Fr. Gilligan, O.S.A. extended a scholarship that made Bernie's attendance possible

Bernie thrived at Malvern Prep despite admittedly being an inconsistent student He moved between the school's academic divisions Red, White, and Blue starting in the top Red section, dropping to White and Blue in his sophomore and junior years, then returning to Red as a senior. He tried various activities, including a memorable one-practice stint on the swim team after noticing the National Prep School Champions banner.

After graduation, Bernie built a successful career in public accounting, earning his CPA before moving to corporate finance and banking, including overseas assignments Eventually burning out on banking, he pursued his passion as a

sports photographer, working with The New York Times, New York Yankees, wire services, and the NFL Though competitive and not particularly lucrative, he found the work tremendously rewarding He later transitioned to non-profit work before retiring to Williamsburg, Virginia. Today, Bernie includes Malvern Prep in his estate plans and joins the Caritas Society.

"The Augustinians extended wonderful generosity to me, and I feel compelled to reciprocate. I hope my donation can help another prospective student who needs financial assistance to attend this great school." Bernie Nunez ’69
