MALVERN LIONS CELEBRATE SUCCESSFUL YEAR On the evening of Wednesday, June 23rd, the members of the Malvern Lions Club and their partners, celebrated the conclusion of yet another successful year with an enjoyable dinner meeting, that was held at Darfield High School. The evening will remain memorable for several reasons, including the delightful two course meal provided by the school’s P.T.S.A., the warm spacious venue, the fellowship engendered on such special occasions, the entertainment provided by pupils of the school and also for the fire alarm emergency, which required everyone to evacuate the hall until clearance was given to reenter the building. The P.T.S.A. has since received a payment of $2,150 from the Club, for their excellent catering work and hospitality on the night. Prior to the meal, we were entertained by the school orchestra, as well as four lead vocalists from the school’s production of ‘Oliver’, who performed a bracket of songs which included such favourites as, ‘Where is Love?’ and ‘Consider Yourself’. The Malvern Lions wish to express their gratitude to all of these young entertainers and also wish the entire cast of ‘Oliver’ every success with their forthcoming performances. Following the meal, the evening progressed into business mode, with outgoing President Gavin King presenting his annual report on the July 2020 to June 2021 year. In his report, Gavin thanked the Club’s members and our Lions Ladies, for the strong positive support everyone had given, to the many projects completed throughout the year. He noted that these had included several regular food selling events, the baling and selling of large quantities of pea straw, marshalling at the annual Coast to Coast event and an annual Golf Tournament among several others. All of these projects had been carried out prudently, with the potential threat of Covid lurking in the background. Some of the major recipients of grants provided from the funds raised during the year were, the

Malvern Community Patrol, who received $16,000 from the latest Golf Tournament to help purchase an updated vehicle, Darfield High School $9,000 for Tertiary Education Scholarships and Outdoor Pursuits Courses for selected students, Hororata School which was allocated $5,000 to carry out playground improvements and $3,000 to both local Golf Clubs, to help restore flood damage to their respective courses. The Lions Club has enjoyed the long-time generous support of both the Greendale and Hororata Clubs, which have both generously enabled the Lions to run fundraising tournaments on their fine courses, for the benefit of many other community groups over several years. President Gavin also noted that a

committee has been meeting regularly to organise the Club’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, which is to be held at Bangor Estate, on Sunday, September 26th. The final important task for Changeover Night was to induct a new board, who carry out the administrative roles within the Club over the next twelve months. The former President Alister Murray has ably undertaken the task of inducting successive boards in recent years. The Club thanks our very supportive and generous community, in what has been an extraordinary year.
