Two Rivers Community Trust’s vision statement is building resilient communities where people can belong, contribute and flourish. Matariki in Malvern most definitely saw that in action last Saturday. There was an incredible turnout of over 500 people who came together to celebrate Matariki with amazing community connectedness. “Those that performed, created artwork, ran hands-on stations and helped as a volunteer, most certainly flourished in their contributing roles grounded by belonging to our great community,” commented Event coordinator, Kelly Maude. Maude The event began with a stunning and very powerful collaboration between the Selwyn Choir, Darfield High School Kapa Haka group and the primary school Kapa Haka collective group all singing together. The stage was packed with some as young as five, through to the senior members of the Choir. It was such a lovely demonstration of tuaka-teina, an important Kaupapa, which is important to Māori people (the special reciprocal relationship of learning between older and

After speeches from Niamh Guy, Guy Matthew Ashworth, Ashworth Sophie Clarke, Clarke and Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton the programme continued which included performances from the Selwyn Choir, the primary Kapa Haka, West Rolleston School’s Pasifika group, as well as the Darfield High School Kapa Haka group. Each of these amazing performances were very different, sharing the cultural learning for our young people.
