Malvern & Courtenay A&P Winter Feed Competition would like to thank...

PGG Wrightson, Ravensdown, Ballance, Agricom, Farmlands, Coalgate Tavern ...for their continued support of this traditional, local event!

L to R Peter Abrahamson (judge), Mike Byrnes (Supreme winner), Aaron Sampson - Annavale Station (Direct Drill winner), Paul Cockburn (Autumn Saved Pasture & Ravensdown Plate), Jessica Dunbar (judge). The Malvern and Courtenay A & P Associations combined Winter Feed Competition was held on June 5th and 6th with forty paddocks judged over a wide area, from Rolleston, to Springfield, to Windwhistle. Entry numbers were back on last year, it was reported, possibly due to a late season, but some last-minute chasing-up resulted in a total of forty paddocks. This year’s judges were Jessica Dunbar (Agricom) and Peter Abrahamson (Darfield farmer),

while stewards representing the Malvern and Courtenay A & P Associations were Guy Bassett and Brent Chamberlain. This year Ravensdown provided Tim Sneddon (Darfield Agri Manager) and Anna and Beth from the Ravensdown Call Centre to help weigh crops. The prizegiving and dinner was once again held at the Coalgate Tavern, with generous prizes from the sponsors. Class winners this year were:

The Pasture Cup was won by Paul Cockburn, who also won the Ravensdown Plate as that section was the Focus Crop for 2019. The R & D Scott Trophy for best Direct Drilled Crop was won by Annavale for a paddock of dryland kale. The Redfern Memorial Trophy, which is given to the Supreme overall best winter feed crop, was won by Mike Byrnes for his paddock of irrigated beet. The judges commented that all paddocks that Mike Byrnes entered in the various sections were of a high quality with a lack of weeds and he was a deserving winner with the fodder beet paddock.
