MALVERN COMMEMORATES ANZAC
ANZAC services were held throughout the district with good local support to remember those who fought and died for their country and toacknowledgethosewhostill serve.
This year was the first service since 2018 for Greendale residents, when they commemorated 100 years
sincetheendofthewar. Alargegroupgatheredinfront of the memorial gates at the Greendale Domain. The memorial is different to other warmemorialsasitlistsallthe men and women who left Greendale to fight overseas, notjustthosewhodied. The gathering was reminded by Councillor Lydia Gliddon
that peace in our world is so important, and she spoke of many who are still fighting, striving to find that peace. Lt. Col. Grant McMillan read all the names on the Memorial gates elaborating on their role – a very long list from a small community.

ONE COMMUNITY, ONE VOICE
That is the message from a public meeting held in Sheffield last Tuesday regarding the retention of SheffieldMemorialPool.
A group of 80-90 people from Sheffield, Waddington and outlying areas turned out to hear how the pool could be saved.
CouncillorsLydiaGliddonand Bob Mugford and Malvern Community Board members Bruce Russell, John Verry, Calvin Payne, and Sharn Nu alsoattendedthemeeting.
John Verry facilitated the meeting and introduced local groups and individuals who offered facts and information about why the pool should be savedandhowitcouldberun by the local community. The meeting was organised so
people could make informed decisions when it came to making their submissions to theCouncil.
The issues covered included misconceptions about the safety issues the Council had withthedepthofthepooland the need for lifeguards.
Informationwassharedabout othercommunityownedpools in the Canterbury region that are operated by volunteers, some with their respective councils providing support in the background and that a range of funding opportunities wereavailable.
TheLocalsCommunityGroup had also prepared a lengthy submission on behalf of the community and noted that Darfield Swimming Pool had run at full capacity over
summer and with the expectedincreaseingrowthof both Darfield and Sheffield, the lack of a pool in Sheffield would create more pressure onDarfield'spoolresources. Concernwasraisedaboutthe Council going ahead with the demolition of the pool while discussion about its future was on the table. However, laterinthemeetingCouncillor Gliddon confirmed that no decisions could be made while they were in discussions.
John Jebson spoke about the history of the land that his grandfather had donated for the pool to the then Malvern County.Thelandwascloseto the school, and the pool was partofhisfamilylegacy.
SAVE THE LIVES OF FUTURE GENERATIONS
Doctor Arin Basu, a Sheffield local and professor at Canterbury University who teaches environmental health and climate change, spoke aboutthebenefitsofhavingan open-to-air pool to the environment. He said to the group, “The most important reason, if you can save the pool, is to save yourown lives and the lives of your future generations.” He went on to explain that the Government was desperate to mitigate the change of certain climate reversals. “One of the best insurances against runaway climateeffectsisthepresence of an open water body anywhere, i.e. a pool. That’s very important, and why we shouldfightforit.”
He also stated that the Sheffield pool is quite unique inthatitistheonlyopen-to-air pool between Christchurch and the West Coast and that it ticks the box for the Government’s Swimsmart and healthy children’s programmes. “Another good reasontokeepthepoolopen,” headded,“soourchildrenand our future generations do not drown.”

The Darfield Memorial Pool has been saving lives for over 70 years by providing a safe swimming option for local Families to learn to swim.
REPRESENTATION CONCERNS
DarfieldResidentsAssociation (DRA) chairperson Harvey Polglase is concerned about the Selwyn District Council’s proposal to abolish the Malvern Community Board andamalgamatetheareawith LeestonandLincoln.Hesays, “This could effectively mean Malvern would have no direct local voice in Council matters.”
Community Boards are necessary in large, sparsely populated rural areas to ensure local representation and that elected representatives can physically cover the geographical area required.
Malvern Community Board memberCalvinPayne“Weare currentlylimitedbypopulation numbers to the number of councillors for each ward. It would seem difficult for one councillor to be able to cover the approximately 5,000
square kilometres of the Malvern Ward detailed in one of the options in the consultation. In this or the three-councillor option combiningwithEllesmere, the only option to maintain functional and local representation would be to maintain a community board insomeform.”
In rural areas face-to-face contactisessential, internetis unreliable, emails can be misinterpreted and by having elected members on the ground, social gatherings can bind communities and supportmentalhealth.
A breakdown of the Selwyn District Council (SDC) total areaof6,500km2is
Rolleston 300 km2, Ellesmere 900 km2, Springs 300 km2, andMalvern5,000km2,which means that Malvern is approximately77%oftheSDC area.
FITTING TRIBUTE
By Colin Hey
TheVintageCarClub’sannual Malvern Anzac Day Run on April 25 was another memorable event. Forty-five entrants enjoyed a beautiful, although somewhat windy autumn day, touring the Malverndistrictastheirwayof celebrating Anzac Day and remembering those who servedandfellduringthegreat wars of the last century. Most ofthe45carsontherunwere pre-WW2 era cars and provided a fitting tribute to ANZACDaycelebrations.
The day began with a public display at the Darfield Recreation Centre, with many residents calling in to see the vehicles.Beforedeparting, the lastpostwasplayed, andthen theOdeofRemembrancewas recited by the chairman of
the Malvern RSA, Terry Hutchinson. The cars were then flagged away by Mr Hutchinson, with stops at the memorials in Sheffield, Coalgate, Hororata and Glenroy before finishing a picniclunchoutsideinthesun at the Glentunnel Community Centre. The strong NW wind was challenging for some of the lower-powered cars, especially heading west out of Darfield and towards Sheffield. All up, a very special day out and a good fund-raising event for the RSA. The organisers wish to thank the many local businesses that supported the event, especially Auto Restorations,BirchfieldEnergy and Resources, and Thirsty AcresCaféinKirwee.
Darfield Residents Association and the Malvern Community Board have been out and about in Darfield in the past week gathering support for submissions to the Selwyn District Council Long Term Plan. Pictured is DRA committee member Erin van der Zwet-Brodie urging residents to make their voices heard.

A young man and woman got married. At the Fme of their marriage, the husband noFced his wife had a big metal box that she put up at the top of their closet. Curious as he was, the wife told him to never to look in it no maNer what the circumstances. Over the years, he saw that box in the closet, but never peered into it for the sake of his wife.
One day, though, the wife had a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. As the husband sat grieving at home, he thought of the box, snatched it up, and sped to the hospital where his wife remained very unwell.
The husband ran to her hospital room and pleaded and begged her to allow him to open the box by her side "Well" she said, "I suppose now would be the right Fme." The husband unlatched the hook and peered inside.
On one side sat two crocheted dolls, and on the other, to his surprise, sat one million dollars!
"Honey, before we got married, my mother gave me this box and told me that whenever I got mad at you, I should go to the bedroom and crotchet a doll," said the wife. The husband was thrilled and thankful. He couldn't believe his wife had only been mad at him two Fmes! "That is amazing!" said the husband to his wife. "Honey, I'm grateful and surprised you've only been mad at me twice, but how on this earth did you manage to get one million dollars?"
"Oh," said the wife, "That's the money I got from selling all the other dolls."
