If you know of something newsworthy, we’d like to know too!

Darfield and Canterbury cricketer, Zak Foulkes (21) received the call as a late addition for the Black Caps T20 squad to play in Pakistan.

Zak caught the eye of the Black Cap selectors with impressive bowling figures for Canterbury in domestic competitions. At the recent Canterbury Cricket awards for the 2023/24 season, Zak received the Male Players Player of the Year as well as Male Bowler of the Year. The phone call came in from an unknown number which Zak nearly didn’t answer as he had had a scam call the day before. Zak was very surprised when Coach Gary Stead broke the good news to him.

Gary says Zak has had an impressive season for Canterbury, including being their leading wicket taker in all three competitions. He displayed impressive skills with the ball, particularly in T20 cricket for the Kings. "We also know he has skills with the bat, and it will be an excellent opportunity for him to be part of the group,” says Gary.

The tour is an opportunity for players to stake a late claim for the T20 World Cup in the US and West Indies in June. The schedule for the games (all start 2am (NZT) is: Friday,

The first stop for the 64 vehicles was at the lake for morning tea. Here Garth Faulksgaveaninformativetalk about the current farm practices and history of the farm.

Local man Rodney Giles also spoke about the DUZGO he andhisbrotherinventedinthe 1970s to help with getting around the farm prior to four wheeldrivevehicles.

The next hill was a little more challenging due to the recent rain, but the slow climb allowed people to enjoy the stunningscenery. Unfortunately, we were not able to stop at the anticipated lunch stop due to the high number of wasps and the softness of the track for this

number of vehicles. This meant Rev. Tom Innes was unable to have the church servicethatwehopedtohave. The day was successful and raised over $3,000. The feedback from participants wasextremelypositiveandwe hope to be able to run it again nextyear.

SAFE DRINKING WATER A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT

Greenpeace Aotearoa is coming to Darfield on Friday April 19 to run free water testing for nitrate contamination in drinking water.

The organisation will be at Darfield Baptist Church from 10am to 4pm and is particularly interested in household bore water supplies, but will test all drinkingwaterincludingpublic supplies.

All you need to bring is a sample of your tap water, and they can test it for nitrate contamination while you wait. Run your kitchen tap for one minute and fill a clean container with 200mls of water.

CANCER SOCIETY MOVES TO COMMUNITY CLINICS

Inresponsetotheincreased need for cancer services within Selwyn Community, the Cancer Society is transitioning the Kidman Street centre to better serve thelocalSelwyncommunity.

The Society is relocating its supportive care team to more accessible locations, with regular clinics now available in Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston, and Lincoln.

The move will enable a greater presence in the community, allowing all the team to meet face to face with locals needing their support, rather than taking one of the team offthe road everydaytokeepthedoorsof theRollestoncentreopen.

Cancer Society Canterbury West Coast Head of Cancer Services,CraigWatsonsays, “We’vemadethedecisionto not renew our lease on the Rolleston centre as we believe it’s a better use of resource to invest in getting our team out into the community. It enables greater access to our supportservicesbyreducing the need for clients to travel to us. Instead, we’ll be bringing our services to them. Removing the need to travel for an appointment is just another small way we canhelpeasetheburdenon

THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF REWI ALLEY

Malvern U3A’s April speaker was Eric Livingstone. His talk was entitled, Rewi Alley: ‘An Extraordinary Ordinary New Zealander’.

Though many had heard of Rewi Alley, most people’s knowledge was sketchy. They knew he was born in Springfield, went to Chinaand was responsible for the beautiful collection of Ming Dynastyandotherporcelainin theCanterburyMuseum.

Eric Livingstone masterfully fleshed out this story for us to reveal the very extraordinary lifeandworksofRewiAlley.

Rewi was born in 1897 in Springfield, Canterbury. He was the second son of Frederick Alley, a stern disciplinarianandheadmaster, and Cara Buckingham, a suffragist, and a friend of Kate Shepherd. After indifferent academic achievements and a love of sport. Rewi enlisted in the army aged 18. He was badly wounded and at one time not expected to survive. He was hospitalised and did recover butwasnevergoingtobeable to have children of his own.

Back in New Zealand, he and his friendJackStevens bought land in Taranaki, but times

were hard and in 1926 Rewi giftedthelandtoJackfreeand unentailed.

Rewi then got on a boat to Sydney, trained as a radio operatorandgotpassageona boat to Shanghai. He said he wanted to go and look at the Chinese Revolution. He stayedtherefor60years, until hisdeathin1987atage90.

He began working as a fire officerandafactoryinspector.

Hewashorrifiedattheworking conditions in the factories, especially of the children. He worked hard to improve conditions, designing machine guards to save accidents to child workers in the silk factories among other safety measures. He worked hard withtheleagueofNationswith flood and famine relief ensuring that food supplies gottotheworkers.

He came to greater prominence after setting up the”GungHo“group.Thiswas a collective that supported operations in small factories, creating employment for workers. He also set up local schools, including one with George Hogg in the village of Shangshipu.

Rewi became one of Chinas best known and best loved foreigners and was Chinese ambassador from1960-1965.

Headoptedtwoboyswhilstin

China and collected many Chinese Artifacts which were sent back to the Christchurch Museum.

Rewi was a prolific writer and wrote 60 travel books about day-to-day life in China and some poetry translations. His mantra was ‘Everyone is of Value’ and ‘Stand up for what is Right’. Thankyou Eric, for a wonderfulinsightinthelifeand timesofRewiAlley.

Tell us what you want and why. That is the message from local Councillors Lydia Gliddon and Bob Mugford and Malvern Board members John Verry and Calvin Payne regarding either retaining orpermanentlyclosing theSheffieldMemorialPool.

A handful of locals gathered on Sunday afternoon at the pool to learn more about the options and challenges ahead if the community opts to take it back into their ownership and to repair and reopen the pool. The pool and surrounds currently sitsonfourparcelsofland–two owned by the Council, one by DOC and the other a deceased estate that needs title remediation.

Council representatives James Richmond, Head of Sport and Recreation and Nick McConaghty, Aquatics Operations Manager, addressed the group and spoke openlyabouttherepairsneeded and discussed the options availabletothecommunity. James says the Council is realistically and genuinely open to consultation on what happens to the future of the pool.Essentially, therearethree options:

1.Councileitherpermanently closesthepoolor;

atanewlocation, possiblyatthelocalschool–fundraisingwouldbe required.

Members of the community voiced their thoughts about the state of the pool since the Council took over in 2017. The pool was due for a repaint at an estimated cost of $16,000 but thiswasputonholdduetoother issues, suchascrackingaround the edge of the pool, leakage, and its age - the pool is around 70yearsold.

Concerns raised by locals also included that the pool was built as a living war memorial, and they wanted to know what responsibilities the Council had in regard to this. Local returned servicemen were upset that the pool could be demolished withoutdueconsiderationofthe impactsuchamovewouldhave on the wider community, the familiesofthefallen, orpastand present service personnel that hold such a monument in high regard.

Councillor Lydia Gliddon consulted with the Returned Servicemen Association (RSA) on this as the pool is not an officially registered RSA war

memorial or heritage site on SDC’s district plan. She was advised that the Sheffield cenotaph, situated between Wrights Road and Railway Terrace, is officially listed as a Fallen Soldiers memorial.

John Verry urged those at the meeting to get the community unitedintheircauseiftheywant toretainthepoolandtogettheir submissions in for the LongTerm Plan and, if possible, be available to speak to their submission.

Locals believe the condition of the Sheffield Memorial Pool has deteriorated since the Selwyn District Council took over the running and maintenance of the pool in 2017. The pool needs serious upgrading if it is to be retained, however in a report regarding use, Council maintain that the pool is one of the least used across the wider Selwyn district.

A COMMUNITY EFFORT

The Sheffield Memorial Pool was opened in November 1953 by the then Selwyn M.P. J K McAlpine who said that certain types of memorials were more than just convenient ways of financing local social amenities by collecting the substantial Government subsidy paid on warmemorials.

“Wemust remember thatthese memorials are symbols of the sacrifices of people who laid down their lives for their country andtheirfellows.”

According to an article in the Press on November 9, the “new DOES

baths were considered by residents to be the best country baths in the South Island, measuring25yardsby30feet.”

Thepoolcost£5500tobuildand £3000 of that was raised by residents and the rest by Governmentsubsidy.

Margaret Holiday (nee Adams), now aged 91, clearly remembers helping her father raisefundsforthenewpool.

She remembers that as a child she sometimes swam in homemade pools that had muddy floors and says the new pool was a real asset to the

community and, although she herself never had a swim in it, her young family all learnt to swiminthepool.

Margaret remembers many fundraising activities but one that stands out is the ‘Queen’s Carnival’. She says there were three queens in the district one each from Waddington, Sheffield and Annat – her sister, still at high school, was nominated as the Sheffield queen. Each area competed to raise the most funds for the pool

MALVERN NEED A NEW RECREATION AND SPORTS FACILITY?

The Selwyn District Council is looking for feedback through submissions on the proposal to build a recreation and sports facility in Darfield to service the Malvernarea.

The wider Darfield area is expected to grow to almost 14,000 residents by 2043 and, with the popularity of indoor sportsinSelwynin recentyears, the upward trend is expected to increase.

The Long-Term Plan (LTP) suggests that the facility would be built alongside existing and future facilities to create a centralhubforMalvern.

The proposal states that as there are no indoor sports courts in Malvern, the sports facility would be included in the LTP to meet this need. It also states that the 30-year Infrastructure Plan will still include plans for a new aquatic facilityinDarfieldfor2035-36.

There are three submission options online to choose from. The first being not to build a community recreation and sports facility at Darfield; the second includes building the facilitywithonecourtwithatotal cost of $7.07 million and an impact on rates per year of

$11.67; and the third option includes two indoor courts at a total cost of $11.28 million and an impact on rates per year of $19.91.

Malvern Netball president

Vanessa Moore says there is a need for a new recreation and sportsfacilitywithaminimumof twocourts.

“With an increase of population forecast and an increase in registrations over all ages, the courtswecurrentlyhavewillnot besufficient.Itwouldbegreatto be able to put plans in place for netballeachyearwithouthaving toworryabouttheweather.”

Vanessa adds that an indoor facility will offer plenty of opportunities for all ages, keeping everyone active all year round. For netball that means juniors, social, seniors, and walking netball. “We need to keep everyone active. An indoor complex would be more inviting for players, parents, and supporters.”

Shesaysthejuniors(Years14) group has around 75 registered. “This is only going to increase over the years. Our programme runs on a Monday afterschoolandmanynightswe havetocancelasitstoocoldfor

ourlittleones.”

Vanessa also believes everyone in the community would benefit from indoor complex, not just netballplayers.

Darfield Cricket Club president Dave Beatty says the Club would welcome a new indoor sportsfacilityinDarfield.J

“The club, since reforming in 2017, has grown each year and currently has two senior sides andsevenjuniorteams.JHaving indoor nets would allow the club to host winter trainings for allagegroupslocallyratherthan travel thirty minutes to Lincoln University.”

Hesaysitwouldalsomeanthey could train on wet summer evenings.J“This would not only help the Darfield Cricket Club but also other clubs in the Malvern area.J We have put a submission in for this to be added.”

Darfield High School sports department also encourages thecommunitytotakeaminute or two to complete this survey, stating that this would not only be an amazing asset to have in Darfield but also very beneficial to the surrounding villages and allourSchools.

The Malvern ANZAC Run is back for another tour of the Malvern area on Thursday, 25 April.

Each year the Canterbury BranchoftheVintageCarClub marks Anzac Day in the Malvern area with a special run, visiting severalmemorials around the district to commemorate this special day of remembrance. Now a well-establishedannualevent, it typically attracts around 30 or 40 veteran, vintage and classic cars ranging in age from the pre-WW1 era right through to post-WW2 models produceduptothe1970’s. TherunstartsfromtheDarfield Recreation Centre on Anzac Day, and the public are welcome to go there from 10am to see the cars on display, and then to see the start of the run at 11.30am. From the Recreation Centre, the run heads out onto SH73 to drive past the Darfield war memorial near the Trinity Church, then continues through Darfield along South Terrace. It then crosses the railway at Mathias Street and turns left into North Terrace, before turning into Kimberley Road to head north to the Old WestCoastRoad. Thefirststopisthememorialin Sheffield on Railway Terrace, where the first cars are expected about 12.00pm. Participants usually stop here for 10 minutes or so to leave poppies and pay their respects. From there the run heads south along SH73 and the Inland Scenic Route 72, passing through Coalgate on thewaytothenextstopatthe Hororata memorial on the corner of Hororata Road and Downs Road, also a popular stoppingpoint.

It is large, very powerful, and as it travels along the road it leaves a cloud of steam in its wake.
