TM Dance World have had a busy yet exciting July School holidays, with their competitive team competing in three different competitions over the past two weeks. The dancers went out on stage and danced their hearts out with great confidence, skill and love for what they were doing, making everyone very proud.

The New Zealand Dance Awards, started on Monday, July 3rd. TM Dance World had many soloists compete throughout the week, and then five teams competed over the weekend in the dance awards against dance teams from all over New Zealand.

“It was an amazing experience for our dancers to witness dancers from all across New Zealand and to compete at such an Elite Level! A special shout out to our Senior Team who performed their lyrical team ‘I Don’t Know Why’ and were awarded a gold award (90 plus points). The Team were TMs highest scoring team and were able to dance in the finals gala against all the top scoring teams from the Competition. These students danced with maturity and grace and were amazing performing at the gorgeous James Hay Theatre,” commented TM Dance World Director, Tara McKeown

The second week of the holidays saw the Christchurch Ballet

Society Competitions, and TM Dance World teams competed again on Monday night.

“The students danced incredibly well, gaining more confidence doing back to back competitions!

We were excited to receive first place in the Open Lyrical class with the Senior Team ‘I Don't Know Why’, and the Junior Team ‘What The World Needs Now’ also received the highest scoring score in the 12 and Under class.

“To finish off the holidays we had Evolution Dance Competition, this is an Australia

based competition that comes to Christchurch to do regional events. We had five students enter this competition, and they came away with some awesome results, with Emily O’Reilly , Eden Whelan and Freya Tymons-Bell placing in the top 10 for their age groups.

“A huge congratulations to our dancing team of dancers and teachers for the efforts put into competition preparation and dedication! You have all done TM proud these past two weeks,” Tara concluded. Moreresultsonpage6…..

COMMUNITY FOCUSED

On Monday, 3rd and 10th of July, children took over Te Huanui Art Gallery! Woven kites, stars and decorations have transformed Margot Christeller's tree, much to her delight. The Gallery looks forward to their rock Taniwha relocating to the courtyard area and being added to by the community.

On Sunday, July 16th, a group of sixteen foragers took to McHughs Plantation with Jackie Phillips and Peter Langlands of Wild Cuisine and Wild Capture. An hour and a half was spent foraging through the forest, followed by an afternoon tea of foraged snacks expertly prepared

Te Huanui Art Gallery was grateful for the opportunity to host Jackie and Peter and thank the Selwyn District Council's Creative Community Scheme for their generous funding of this event.

CALLING BARGAIN HUNTERS

The Great Oxford Garage Sale Trail is taking place again this year on Sunday, August 6th, from 9am to 2pm. The Trail is organised by the Oxford Promotions Action Committee (OPAC) and will be an exciting Trail for bargain hunters from around Canterbury. The event is in its thirteenth year and attracts a great crowd each year. If you love to fossick around at garage sales looking for a bargain or a special find, then don’t miss this

Trail in Oxford. There are normally about forty sites registered around the village. On the day maps of the sites will be available at Pearson Park Oval (off Main Street/Bay Road/ Dohrmans Road) from 9am to 11am and then by the Oxford Farmers Market until maps run out. A gold coin donation for the map to help with advertising would be greatly appreciated.

“Each year the Trail has brought hundreds into our town, and this

year should be no different,” commented Ron from the OPAC. As well as bargain hunting at the Garage Sale Trail, there is plenty to do in Oxford afterwards, including relaxing in a café, shopping and visiting the Art Gallery or Museum. The Oxford Farmers Market on Main Street and the Oxford Craft Market in the Oxford Town Hall are also great places to browse and shop. See advertisement alongside for further details.

MATARIKI DATES

If you were wondering why the Matariki public holiday was observed on July 14th this year when it fell on June 24th last year, it’s because Matariki follows the traditional Māori lunar calendar system as opposed to the solar calendar system.

One of the major differences is the solar year that we follow is 365 and a quarter days long whereas the lunar calendar system is 354 days, meaning a

difference of eleven days. This can provide a thirty three day difference over three years.

In the maramataka (the Māori lunar year), the extra month is added after Pipiri (June) every third year. The name of the extra month is Ruhanui.

“This was taken into account when the decision came to set the Matariki dates. Matariki is generally really high in the morning sky in the first year after that reconciliation. Then in the

second year, like how it was last year, it tends to be lots lower in the sky,” commented Astronomy academic Rangi Mātāmua

The date of Matariki will change from year to year, however, it will always land in June or July. The proposed dates for the next five years are:

• 2024: 28th June

• 2025: 20th June

• 2026: 10th July

• 2027: 25th June

• 2028: 14th July.

Sunday

Venue Maps will be available on the day from 9am to 11am at Pearson Park Oval, off Dohrmans Road, off Bay Road, after 11am at the Oxford Farmers Market, Main Street.

Or you can sign up to receive one by email at 9am on the day: greatoxfordgaragesale@gmail.com

RED CARPET BALL

Recently, the Kirwee Netball and Rugby Red Carpet Ball was held at the Kirwee Community Hall. Players and supporters swapped sporting uniforms for dashing suits and ties, glamorous gowns and heels. The Hall looked amazing, and the band ‘Old Skool’ had everyone up dancing and enjoying the night. A fantastic $14,000 was raised thanks to the amazing community support from individuals and businesses who sponsored the event with prizes

for the raffles and auctions as well as ticket sales.

The event was well organised by Liam O’Callaghan , Marcia Taylor , Amelia McKnight , Ella Stokes with help from their partners, family and friends.

“A big thank you to the Kirwee Social Netball Girls, Friends of Kirwee School, Kirwee Fire Brigade and the Rugby team who cleaned up the following day. Thanks, everyone for attending and supporting the two Kirwee Clubs,” commented Marcia.

FIXED COSTS VS DISCRETIONARY

When you apply for a housing loan, the bank or your adviser will analyse your spending habits and regular payments. There is the ‘discretionary spending’ that you can reduce or stop altogether, such as takeaways, entertainment etc, and there are the ‘fixed costs’, which will carry on once you have a loan.

The fixed costs include rates, insurance, basic food costs and of course the mortgage payments, and anything else that will continue after you have your

loan, like transport costs and hobbies.

It is really important that you do a realistic budget so that there are no surprises when it comes to living with a mortgage. Be honest with yourselves. If you have hobbies that you are not prepared to give up, then factor the costs in. The math's is simple - income must exceed expenses, with allowances for an increase in costs. If it is tight, then you need to make changes to either income or expenses to make it all work.

When considering where to buy a home, do you buy a house close to where you work to reduce transport costs or get another job close to your new home that hopefully pays better. Are schools a consideration, or access to other services you require. Once again, it all comes down to the simple equation - income has to exceed outgoings, so make a budget!

BOOK LAUNCH

Underground book launch?

How would you launch a book about an historic railway tunnel?

Or where would you do it?

In the Tunnel of course. Maybe?

Well actually, no. But the brand new book about the Otira Railway Tunnel did have its time of total immersion.

It was decided that fifteen cartons of the book ‘Through the Alps’, should at least get a taste of life underground, after all the book is about the Otira Tunnel, which is about to celebrate its centennial on August 4th.

The 500 copies of the book were printed in Greymouth, before

most were loaded onto Kiwi Rail’s Tranz Alpine at the Mawhera Station, for their trip through the Tunnel, ready for the official launch in Arthur’s Pass, by publishers the Arthur’s Pass Association.

At the book launch on July 15th, authors Bruce Shalders , Diane Gordon-Burns and Chris Stewart , spoke about the huge amount of research it has taken to write about this unique engineering marvel. The book covers the controversy over the route, the planning, surveying and the construction, with all its trials and difficulties over fifteen years. Also covered is the social history, and the beginnings of both Otira and Arthur’s Pass. The Tunnel, at the time it was built, was New Zealand’s largest engineering project, the longest tunnel in the British Empire at 8.5 kilometres long, and a steep upward grade from West to East.

Public Forum: A Hororata resident once again raised the question of the new public toilets built in the Domain, and questioned why they weren’t being completed so that they could be used. The Board is aware that there is some debate with ECan regarding the siting of the septic tank system.

Board Meeting: With this being the retiring Chief Executive’s last Board meeting, as well as being the end of the financial year, business and reports contained discussion regarding on-going issues previously raised.

The gum trees adjacent to the Coleridge Village Hall are an ongoing topic, with arborists declaring that the trees are safe, but some locals requesting that they be felled.

• Currently, a survey is being conducted to determine if this is a majority request or limited to a minority of the village’s residents.

• Stop signs are still an issue throughout the District with drivers having a lack of understanding of the meaning of ‘STOP’!

• Disbursement of funds from the Community Board’s Discretionary budget were a significant topic of discussion, with the Community Board looking at several items over the allocated budget, however, with the new financial year being around the corner, it was agreed to consider all applications.

• It was also reported that the Westview Fund is now almost completely distributed, and any residual funds not used will go to the Community Board to be used for specific capital projects in Darfield.

MALVERN SPINNERS & WEAVERS

Malvern Spinners and Weavers, as part of the national Creative Fibre group, have just celebrated their 40th (ish) anniversary. Relying on living memory, this locally-based community group has three lifetime members in the broader Christchurch area that established the regular meetings to bring people together to celebrate wool. Over this period the group have been an integral part of the Canterbury wool networking chain showcasing hand-produced woollen garments, creations

and expertise in individual exhibitions and local A&P shows.

The Malvern Spinners and Weavers is a friendly group that supports using local and natural wool in any way that takes people’s imagination. There is a lot of expertise in carding, combing, spinning, knitting, crocheting, weaving and felting across the group that is ready to help and inspire. Meetings are every second and last Monday of the month at the St Josephs Hall and Darfield Library respectively.

The Malvern Spinners and Weavers are hosting a ‘Have A Go Day’ on Thursday, August 3rd from 10am at Darfield Recreation Centre.

“We would be delighted to see you there to simply try your hand at a wool craft or meet some locals to talk about the benefits of wool. Not only will there be experts on hand to help you have a go but also a variety of traders,” commented President, Lorna Tanner

4TH GENERATION WOODCHOPPER

Lochie Windley, aged 15, from Rolleston is a fourth-generation woodchopper. Having grown up with the sport he is competing at a high level already. Lochie is a Year 11 student at St Thomas College of Canterbury and coached by Roger Thain from Darfield.

His Mum, Raewyn , is a world champion sawyer herself and encouraged Lochie, under her watchful eye, to pick up the axe when he was ten years old. He currently trains in sport-specific disciplines at least three times a week, as well as plays rugby for the Under 16 West Melton team, which helps his general fitness. Lochie loves woodchopping, it allows him to travel around the

country and internationally, and he enjoys catching up with friends that he has made. Because woodchopping is a relatively small sport, those involved in it become like part of the family.

Competitors can be competing somewhere within the South Island every weekend between the Ellesmere Show at the start of the season and Fairlie Show at Easter, marking the end of the season.

Last weekend, Lochie competed in the New Zealand Under 21 Championship in Hokitika against the top junior Axemen from around New Zealand. He competed well, winning his heat and semi-final to compete

against twenty year old Warkworth man, Jordan Thomas, in the final, finishing second in Elimination Underhand.

A former sergeant major in the Army took a new job as a high school teacher. Before he started he injured his back and was required to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fitted under his shirt and wasn’t noticeable. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in school and knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom. He walked confidently into the rowdy room, opened the window up wide and sat at his desk. When the strong breeze made his tie flap, he picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. There was dead silence and the rest of the year went very smoothly.
