4TH GENERATION WOODCHOPPER
Lochie Windley, aged 15, from Rolleston is a fourth-generation woodchopper. Having grown up with the sport he is competing at a high level already. Lochie is a Year 11 student at St Thomas College of Canterbury and coached by Roger Thain from Darfield.
His Mum, Raewyn , is a world champion sawyer herself and encouraged Lochie, under her watchful eye, to pick up the axe when he was ten years old. He currently trains in sport-specific disciplines at least three times a week, as well as plays rugby for the Under 16 West Melton team, which helps his general fitness. Lochie loves woodchopping, it allows him to travel around the country and internationally, and he enjoys catching up with friends that he has made. Because woodchopping is a relatively small sport, those involved in it become like part of the family.

Competitors can be competing somewhere within the South Island every weekend between the Ellesmere Show at the start of the season and Fairlie Show at Easter, marking the end of the season.

Last weekend, Lochie competed in the New Zealand Under 21 Championship in Hokitika against the top junior Axemen from around New Zealand. He competed well, winning his heat and semi-final to compete against twenty year old Warkworth man, Jordan Thomas, in the final, finishing second in Elimination Underhand.
