The Reverend ‘Aunty Lyn’ Sopoaga’s Ordination
The most joyous service was held at Trinity Church, Darfield, on Sunday, May 28th 2023, for the occasion of Aunty Lyn’s Ordination as a Minister of the Presbyterian Church.
Four and a half years ago, when Lyn first drove to Darfield from Christchurch for her meeting with the Ministry Settlement Board, she had no idea how long it would take and arrived several hours early. Needing to fill in time, she went to Darfield Bakery, which she had already heard about, and then on to Doughboys and Fat Beagle as well!
Since settling in Darfield, she has visited many local businesses and industries, dairy, sheep and cropping farms, gaining insight into what this district is all about.
Lyn stated, “I’m now part of a community where the word ‘unity’ in ‘community’ is essentially that.”
Lyn’s home church, St. Paul’s Trinity Pacific Presbyterian
Church, joined members of Lynmaree’s family and numerous people from around the district in attending this very special Ordination Service.
Alpine Presbytery Moderator, Reverend Phyllis Harris led the service, with Reverends Marty Redhead, Martin Stewart, Makesi Alatimu and Michael Reid also participating.

FANTASTIC MILESTONE
...continuedfromfrontpage. As well as Presbyterian ministers in the congregation, other denominations were also well represented, and it was lovely to see Susan and Philip Baldwin back in Darfield for a visit to support their friend, Lyn. We were treated to several musical items, first Aunty Lyn being piped into Church by Andrea Barnhill , then a medley of songs from the St. Paul’s Praise and Worship Team, followed by our Children’s Praise Orchestra with the Darfield Ukulele Group. We were also truly enthralled to hear such magnificent singing from St. Paul’s Samoan Choir. After the formal Ordination and the official signing of documents, Oscar Gosling, accompanied by Elizabeth Blackburn, sang ‘Climb Every Mountain’.
This was very apt for the tasks Lyn ‘climbed’ in moving to Darfield to take on the role of Ministry Team Leader for the Malvern Cooperating Parish. She has made many new friends, joined new groups and worked very hard studying part time for her New Zealand Diploma in Christian Studies on top of everything she does for the parish and our wider community.
Lyn has followed her dream, and we are all extremely proud of her achievement, culminating in her becoming a fully fledged minister. As her colleague, Reverend Doctor Michael Reid said, “It is time for the training wheels to come off, and Reverend Aunty Lyn can now attach her wings to take full flight!”

Aunty Lyn would like to say a huge Thank You to all the churches and to this wonderful community for your support for my ordination last Sunday.
I would also like to thank the Malvern News, Darfield Bakery, Hororata Café, Sewing Room, Twisted Bunch, Darfield Ukulele Group, Fat Beagle and especially my Church Family, the Beautiful Children's Praise Orchestra, Malvern Co-operating Parish and Malvern Anglican Parish.
Finally, thanks to Val Gifford who after seeing me wearing my dear Mum's pink dressing gown on the King's coronation suggested that I should wear it to my ordination. So I did, I wore the 95 year old dressing gown and it was an elegant homage to my late parents! Happy 95th Birthday to our Bryan Berry too.
God Bless you and much love
Aunty Lyn

Springfield School are holding a fundraising Ball, ‘Bids and Bubbles’ on Saturday, July 22nd, at Tawera Memorial Hall. The event is to help the next stage of the School’s new build development, a new playground. The design has had huge input from the children, and a big sum of money raised will go towards this. The rest of the funds raised will be put aside for expenses like camp, funding teacher aids and numerous other activities that pop up for the students. The evening is shaping up to be
a great night, with live band, The Meaniez (kindly sponsored by the Springfield Limeworks) performing. There will be a team from Hazlett’s working their magic with a live Auction. Raffle tickets will also be for sale with some great prizes, including two thirty minute trial flights (courtesy of Christchurch Helicopters), a beautiful floor rug, $500 voucher for tyres, firewood, mushroom compost, Stoney Creek clothing, Barkers gift packs, processed lamb, hot pool passes, just to name a few.
On arrival at this R18 event, attendees will receive a complimentary bubbles, there will be canapes served throughout the evening, and a cash bar will be operating. When buying ball tickets you can also purchase a pre-paid bus ticket to get you home at the end of the evening. So, dust off those formal clothes, grab some friends and head along for a fun night while helping to support the local Springfield School.
MATARIKI IN MALVERN
Matariki in Malvern is back for 2023! The Matariki in Malvern team are really excited to continue running this special event so the local community can come together and celebrate Matariki (the Māori New Year). Matariki is a time marked during winter when the Matariki cluster of stars reappears visibly in the early dawn sky after a short time when it is hidden below our horizon. The main themes of Matariki are, remembrance of those close to us who have passed during the last year, celebrating the present through sharing kai (food) and doing activities together and looking to the future preparing for the year ahead.
Matariki in Malvern is a fully funded free event held on Saturday, June 24th, from 5 - 8pm at the Darfield Recreation Centre. The event is being held on this date to keep a consistent date of running the celebration. Matariki falls later in July this year, and with it being in the winter school holidays organisers wanted to ensure people are around to contribute and attend the event, which will provide a fantastic opportunity to kick start the Matariki season.
It will begin with a special mihi
whakatau (welcome), followed by kapa haka performances from a collective group across Malvern, as well as the Darfield High School Kapa Haka group. This year there will also be dancers from the Springfield dance studio Danz Fit, and the Darfield Ukulele Group will join the kapa haka performers for some waiata (songs).
Darfield Playcentre will provide the special entrance decorations and will have some tuff trays in the foyer with activities for young tamariki to enjoy during the performances. There will also be artwork from some of the local kura (schools) and preschools continuing with the learning of Matariki.
The team is incredibly proud of how the event enables the opportunity for our amazing rangatahi (young people) to take responsibilities of leadership, sharing their knowledge and skills. They also draw in groups from across Malvern who are on a learning journey of how to build tikanga Māori into the activities they do, with both young and old learning together.
After the performances, a very special part of the event is sitting
together to share kai (food) as a community. There will be hāngi cooked meat and vegetables, bread rolls (including gluten free options) and salads, which are sourced locally to support local businesses. The event will conclude with some hands-on activities, including, House of Bricks Lego (recently on New Zealand Lego Masters), local artist Soon-Lee Spicer with a printing station, harakeke (flax) weaving, rakau stick making, have -a-go at poi and ukulele, Selwyn Libraries with a variety of crafts and activities and moko face painting. There will also be a scavenger hunt around the theme of the nine Matariki whetū (stars) with some handmade spot prizes drawn from the collected answers.
Matariki in Malvern is free to attend, but organisers do greatly appreciate a koha (donation) towards the cost of the kai. There will be Eftpos available on the night to make this easy. Please keep an eye out for updates on the Matariki in Malvern Facebook page. Organisers are really looking forward to seeing you there!

SELWYN ART SHOW
The 2023, Selwyn Art Show was, once again, another huge success, which saw over eighty artist entries from all over the Selwyn District and the wider Canterbury area. This was the 21st year of this annual exhibition and the Show continues to grow in popularity and size. The event was held at the Rolleston Community Centre stadium, which was filled with a wide range of artistic mediums, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fused glass and fibre crafts.
The Show opened on the evening of Friday, May 26th, with an address by Margaret White, Chairperson of Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council. She spoke of the way the Show has risen to meet the needs of a growing number of artists residing in our district.
“The event celebrated the milestones of the past as well as looking forward to the opportunities for the future,”
commented Margaret.
The opening evening was also complemented by wonderful mellow jazz, provided by local musician Stephanie McEwin
A popular section of the Show, over the weekend, was the High School Showcase. This year featured work by Year 11 students from Ellesmere College, including beautifully rendered self-portraits in pencil, and a fun, eclectic mix of colourful artwork by students from Waitaha School.
Two awards were presented at the conclusion of the Art Show, with recipients receiving vouchers to spend on new art supplies from The Drawing Room. The People’s Choice Award went to Gabriel Bosman of Southbridge for his creative steel sculptures. The Youth Artist Award was presented jointly this year to Olivia Cassie of Rolleston for her watercolour landscape paintings and to Aleks Bryant of West Melton for his carefully rendered and detailed
felt pen artwork.
The Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council, were pleased with the high attendance of local art lovers over the weekend and the number of artworks that found new forever homes. The aim of the event was to celebrate and support the arts in Selwyn, with the majority of the proceeds going back to the hardworking artists themselves and the remaining money used to cover the running costs of the event and fund art related workshops during the remainder of the year.
The future looks bright for the Selwyn Art Show, and Arts Heart expects the event will continue to grow and flourish. They believe that the Selwyn District is a great spot to be an artist, and the Show is an important celebration of the amazing artistic talent in our region. LOCAL RAM RAID
In the early hours of Monday, May 29th, the Darfield Dairy become the latest victim of a ram raid burglary. Owner, Errol Barnes, was alerted to the alarm activation at about 1.40am, arriving on the scene six minutes later. The vehicle that had been used to ram the door was still on the footpath with the lights on. He phoned the Police, who arrived shortly after.
The offenders involved took ice creams and a donation box for the Blind Foundation, before fleeing in another vehicle stolen from the nearby hotel car park.
“This is the first time we have been ram raided but not the first time we have been broken into,” Errol added.
“It is a waste of people’s time and energy, but I am extremely grateful for the support I have received from the local community. The contractors
involved have been fantastic, and thankfully the shop was secure by Monday night.
“The overall repairs are costly and will take a while to complete. It’s estimated that it could cost up to $8,000. It is very frustrating and brasses you off,” Errol concluded.
“The Police were very prompt and the offenders, three youths, were located in Christchurch a short time later,” commented Errol Police have confirmed the offenders will be referred to Youth Aid. ThedoorsbeingrepairedatDarfieldDairyaftertheramraid.
DHS WORK EXPERIENCE
Darfield High School (DHS) has many local businesses in the community that allow students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience each week.
Charlie Tasker, a current Year 12 student, has been completing work experience with Bray Street Engineering, a long standing engineering business based Darfield.
Charlie has been working with Manager Gary Woolf and his team since the start of the year. Gary has over forty years in the industry and Charlie commented that he is really enjoying learning new skills and working with great colleagues who are extremely supportive of him.
Charlie also recognised that the skills and knowledge he is acquiring, will be extremely beneficial to his future plans to attend Pre Trade Engineering full
time.
DHS are grateful to Bray Street Engineering and other local businesses for providing this invaluable opportunity.

NETWORKERS NZ - CONNECTING BUSINESSPEOPLE
The Networkers NZ is a local business networking organisation that has four groups in the Selwyn area. The aim of the organisation is to connect communities of like-minded businesspeople with each other to support and grow their businesses.
It’s with the help of the facilitators, who are also local business owners, that the group supports their members and the wider business community. The facilitators live local to their groups, which gives them a unique stand in seeing and supporting those in their local community thrive.
Facilitators, Ann-Maree Ozanne
and Prue McCaughan live and run their businesses within the Selwyn district. They love where they live, the people they’re surrounded by on a day-to-day basis, the community as a whole and they want to see everyone succeed and work together. To do this they both wanted to give back to the business community by facilitating business networking groups to bring local businesspeople together. These supportive meetings allow people to make genuine connections, celebrate successes together and move through any challenges with the help of their colleagues within a positive culture allowing
everyone to succeed.
The groups have people from many industries that come together. Those working from home comment on how the group becomes their local whanau, giving them a sense of belonging and a place to enjoy the company of others.
Do you live locally or have a local business? Would you like to grow it by meeting and connecting with a group of other businesspeople?

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
Canterbury’s Mt Hutt Ski Area is gearing up to celebrate its golden anniversary with a four-day celebration, from August 24th27th.
Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said, “Mt Hutt has operated for fifty phenomenal years, and the anniversary will take locals and visitors down memory lane, with a huge range of unique events, tributes, history, parties and music in the pipeline.
“It’s going to be a proud and nostalgic week for the team, our Methven community and our loyal Canterbury skiers and riders.
“It’s not only a chance to celebrate this very special mountain but also the people who have been part of the journey throughout the years,” James concluded.
Mt Hutt’s first year started with a humble rope tow in 1973. In
1980, the first chairlift ‘Towers Triple Chair’ was installed and in 2005, ‘The Summit 6’ Chairlift started spinning. Come 2021, Mt Hutt became home to New Zealand’s first eight-seater chairlift, ‘The Nor’West Express’. The mountain has proudly been voted New Zealand’s best ski resort eight years running at the World Ski Awards.
The team at Mt Hutt has been drawing up anniversary plans for months, working on a programme that appeals to a wide range of people, to encourage a week-long stay in Canterbury.
Iconic Kiwi rock legends Dragon will headline a free Welcome
‘Light Up Party’ kicking off the first night of celebrations in Methven on August 24th, coupled with a tractor and lantern parade.
Over the following three days, Mt
Hutt will host a slew of special events including some ‘fiftieth’ challenges.
The celebration will also include late night stargazing at Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa, an alumni event and lots of exciting onmountain fun.
Come Saturday a rail jam and family activities will be kicking off in Methven, followed by Canterbury favourite White Out Festival, with headline act yet to be announced. The celebrations will close out with an iconic Mt Hutt Moonski and fireworks display. Future announcements and details will be made in the coming weeks via Mt Hutt’s website and social media channels.
Mt Hutt is scheduled to open on June 9th, 2023.
BUILDING APPLICATIONS
Change is coming for those who are applying for a consent to build on land that is still going through subdivision consent process.
From June 6th, people building on newly subdivided land will be able to apply for a building consent only after the developer has received the Council’s final approval that any of the outstanding conditions of their subdivision resource consent have been complied with. The latter is known as ‘section 224(c) certificate’.
“We are changing the process to ensure all the subdivision consent requirements, in particular in regards to mitigating any natural hazards, are met before the building consent is issued,” commented Tim Harris, Selwyn
District Council Group Manager Development and Growth.
“Processing a subdivision consent is a complex matter that requires the Council to make a number of significant decisions, in particular in regards to what natural hazards, such as flooding, may affect the land, how the subdivision may impact surrounding land and infrastructure, and how all of this should be mitigated,” Tim added. Following on from the cyclone Gabrielle and the general increased frequency of severe weather and flooding events due to climate change, there is heightened concern about building on flood-prone land.
“We are also seeing an increase in the number of subdivisions
occurring in areas affected by natural hazards. Our Council has decided to help address this by changing its approach to managing consents. A number of other councils are already doing this, so it’s not new,” continued Tim.
“It is also about providing certainty to landowners of any conditions and requirements on building on the land that may be imposed as part of the subdivision process,” Tim concluded.
There will be some exceptions on a case-by-case basis, conditional on early engagement between the developers and the Council’s building, planning and infrastructure teams reaching agreement on specific conditions.

PAINT AND SIP
On Friday, May 19th, Darfield Rugby Football Club (DRFC) held their first ‘Ladies Night - Paint and Sip’. The event proved to be very popular, selling out in just two days!
Forty ladies attended the event, which was hosted by DRFC Secretary Sarah Blackburn and her daughter Brittney. The lovely ladies from Creative Sparks in Darfield supplied the equipment and step by step tutorial. The Clubrooms were transformed into a feminine pink, floral art studio - very different from the normal digs. The evening went really well, with great fun and lots of laughs had by attendees! There was a lot of talent, with the paintings all looking fabulous, and many
ECAN UPDATE
ILLEGAL DUMPING
Illegal dumping is rife across the region, and it’s not just the inorganic items that are putting our flood protection, biodiversity and water health at risk.
With many people taking the recent long weekends to maintain their gardens in preparation for winter, there's often an increase in green waste making its way into local waterways.
At this time of year, it’s more important than ever that we ensure the waterways and the structures within them are able to do the job they’re designed to do and that means keeping them clear and unobstructed. Green waste can lead to blocked culverts, floodgates and other critical infrastructure, preventing stormwater from draining away.
It’s not just green waste that is a problem when it makes its way to our waterways. Inorganic items which do not break down are increasingly being discovered illegally dumped in our riverbeds regionwide. Not only can these items be a health and safety issue for members of the public, animals and those having to remove the rubbish, but having these items removed appropriately also comes with a cost to ratepayers.
If you see suspicious activity or rubbish being dumped in a riverbed, please note the details of the vehicle and location, and report it to ECan’s Incident Reporting Line on 0800 765 588 or by using the Snap Send Solve app (for Apple or Android) or online reporting tool.
surprised themselves with their fabulous painting.
The feedback from the event was extremely positive, with many attendees asking when the next one would be.
DRFC would like to thank everyone who attended and for their support towards the Club. Funds raised will go towards some new bar stools after the extensive Club renovations.

COLERIDGE DOWNS CADETS
Coleridge Downs is a highly productive working farm, sharing the passion and opportunity of training young people into the farming industry.
Coleridge Downs Training Farm, overseen by General Manager Tony Plunkett , offer four cadets every year an opportunity to gain Level 3 and 4 qualifications through Primary ITO. This is coupled with an amazing opportunity to gain high quality practical training from learning basic stock work in the yards to mustering by foot and horseback, shearing, general stock work, tractor work, fencing and training dogs. These skills are learnt alongside block/stock managers and senior staff, all of this overseen by the Training Manager, Kristen Hubbard, to assure high quality training over the two years.
The cadets are housed in a purpose-built single quarters where they have a bedroom each and shared bathroom, kitchen facilities and large social indoor and outdoor living areas. Each cadet is provided with a well-bred heading pup soon after arrival. This is followed by training with the assistance of dog trialling expert Stu Miller and senior staff to build an effective team of working dogs which will be an asset to the cadets when they leave.
Scott McIlroy is heavily
involved with Coleridge Downs in his role with Hazletts and he introduced the cadets to the Darfield Rugby Football Club Colts coaching and management team.
“I have been working with the Coleridge Downs group for a few years and like the way they have a big focus on the young people in the cadet programme,” commented Scott.
“It seemed like a pretty good idea to get them involved in the rugby club, as they are a great group of young people, all passionate about the same things. The two girls in the programme have a big part to play as well and are often at games supporting the boys and driving them around. All the cadets are like one big team and look after each other which is great to see,” concluded Scott.

Coach Tim McNae and Manager
Leon Rietveld commented that they were looking to build up the Colts team from the previous season, not just numbers but team comradery.
“We as a Club and coaching team reached out to see if these Coleridge Downs boys would be interested. It was a good move
as the boys not only boosted our numbers but also add to the spirit and culture of the team,” commented Tim.
“They are really good lads on and off the field, all bringing a good level of footy along with a lot of laughs. They are all polite and respectful and fit in well. Hopefully Darfield Rugby Club can continue this association
with future Coleridge cadets, as it is about meeting new faces and having fun, as much as it is about the rugby,” concluded Leon.

The Malvern Community Board held their latest meeting on Monday, May 22nd at the Sheffield Hall, which was well attended by members of the local community. A range of topics discussed, including flooding, ANZAC Day service, the future of Sheffield Pool and cycle tracks. (The minutes of the meeting will have more information).
Members of the public are encouraged to continue to talk to their Board member or attend a public forum at the start of each meeting, typically reserved for a time between 4.30pm and approximately 5pm.
Board member reports included discussions on the Draft Annual Plan, Representation Review and also Blue Gums in the Coleridge Township.
It has also been noted that food is being put out for the Keas in Arthurs Pass Village, causing young birds to swoop across the road, risking death by truck, campervan, or car. The food is also attracting rodents.
The Board considered discretionary funds applications and approved one of these, to the Darfield Toy Library.
Ken May, Chair - Malvern Community Board.

AEDs, Golf and Being Prepared for an Emergency
Recently, Malvern Lions held their Annual Golf Tournament, and St John was the recipient of the proceeds. The day was an enormous success, with Hororata Golf Course in wonderful condition. The sponsors were very generous with raffle and Auction prizes, and sponsoring various holes. A record number of players enjoyed the conditions, and their participation on and off the course added to the success of the day. A big thank you to the Lions members who put in the hard work to bring it all together. You will have seen a report in a previous edition of the News, listing sponsors. Thank you all, from St John, for your generosity. The proceeds were to provide much needed funds to support the network of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) that St John maintains, which are scattered throughout the wider Malvern area. New pads, batteries and other maintenance costs are significant and ongoing. We will also be adding another AED to the mix, which will be available locally for community groups to borrow for their own events where they feel that an AED is a part of their ‘risk management’ strategy. There is also an upcoming opportunity for community groups to be educated in the need for and use of AEDs.
CPWL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FUND
2023 funding applications are now being accepted.
This fund was established to enhance the natural environment of the Selwyn Te Waihora catchment. Please see CPWL’s website: www.cpwl.co.nz or email emf@cpwl.co.nz for further information. Applications close at 5pm Friday 30 June 2023.
The Darfield Garden Club AGM was held on Tuesday, May 16th, at the Darfield Recreation Centre. The meeting saw a very good attendance, with one new member welcomed.
Margaret Ridgen presided over the AGM meeting, and a new President Elva Adam was duly elected, along with all positions being filled for the coming year.
AEDs are a useful tool that will add significantly to the chance of a successful outcome should a person suffer a heart attack or cardiac arrest in the community. AEDs are able to be used by any member of the public, and by them being placed at several locations, may be available in advance of an Emergency Service crew arriving. As an aside, local AEDs have been accessed more than three times recently, potentially may have made a difference to the outcome. We accept that they do not always save people, but they do increase the odds.
As part of being prepared, having the tools and knowing how to use them is important. St John are planning to hold a First Aid course at Darfield on June 23rd, a Level 1 course, which has an eight hour run time. To enrol for this course, please access buystjohn.org.nz or call 0800 FIRST AID (0800 347 782).
You never know when you may need to help in an accident or medical emergency. Gain knowledge and confidence to provide effective first aid. Ambulance care and transport may be for you. So consider becoming a volunteer for St John. More about this to follow. National Volunteer Week is fast approaching, so give it some thought. Ross Meder, St John Darfield.
To find out more about becoming a volunteer visit: join.stjohn.org.nz
In presenting the annual report, Ann Gibson gave a detailed description of the past year, where members enjoyed local and further afield garden visits, Spring and Autumn Flower Shows and visiting speakers. Carol Williams was farewelled this year after many years of office and service, and Margaret Seaton was presented with a gift of appreciation for the numerous years of dedication and participation to the Garden Club, having been the Show Coordinator for many years.
The presentation of trophies was made by our Patroness Anna Clark .
• Darfield Garden Club Memorial Rose Bowl for Most Points
Cut Flowers: Margaret Seaton
• Darfield Garden Club 25th Anniversary Vase for Most Points
Open: Hilary Crawley

The meeting concluded with a time of sharing over a cup of tea/ coffee.

Three very mischievous elderly ladies are sitting on a park bench when they see an elderly man walk by. "Say, fella," the first lady says. "I bet we can guess your age." The man pauses and looks at them sceptically. "Guess my age? that's impossible."
"C'mon, we'll show you," the second lady says. "First, we'll need to look up your nose."
Embarrassed by the notion but wondering if the ladies truly knew something, the old man walks over and lifts his head, enabling them to look right up his nose.

"Okay, now stick one finger up your nose, one finger in your ear, cross your arms and sing Danny Boy in a loud voice." the third lady says.
The man then does so; the ladies muse for a few moments, before saying, "You are 87 years old."
"Why, that's incredible," the man gasps. "That's absolutely right! Tell me, how were you able to tell?" He had silently wondered how all of these seemingly random methods had enabled the ladies to find out his age. The ladies reply, "We were at your birthday party last month."
