HOOKED ON TRIATHLONS
Darfield High School Year 7 student Blake Smith (10) became hooked on triathlons when he was just six years old

20th Year Page 8
He competed in several triathlons such as the Weetbix TRYathlon, McDonald’s Youth Duathlon and the Rolleston Kids Triathlon until he was old enough to complete in junior triathlons.
His first junior triathlon was the Canterbury Classic 2024, where he competed in the aquathlon and won his age group.
He also competed in the Sea 2 Sky Triathlon 2024 but his mum, Gemma, says it didn’t go well.
“He wasn’t used to swimming in the ocean with a whole group, so it was a bit of a shock. We didn’t have a wetsuit, so he was cold and almost last out the water, then his shoelaces broke in transition. I thought he would give up at that point, but he was determined, he rode a very fast bike leg and clawed back to middle field before the run and then finished in the top 15.”
From there Blake was hooked and joined the Canterbury Tri Club in Term 4, 2024 – he had to be 9/10 years old to join.
Gemma says that in triathlon your age is taken as to the age you are turning that year. “This doesn’t work well for Blake as his birthday is November, so he is competing with 11-year-olds even though he is 10.”
She says he trains twice a week around Canterbury. “He loves it and doesn’t want to miss a session. His favourite part of a tri is the bike followed by the swim – his least favourite is the run.”

OLD POST OFFICE BUILDING CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
By Karen Rawley, By Karen Rawley, Darfield Genealogy Darfield DarfieldGenealogy
“ ““ “Old Building Series. Old Building Series. Building Series.
Old Building Series.” ” ”
Prior to 1871 all post o ce business for Darfield was done either at Selwyn or Geraldine. In 1875, a post o ce was opened in the new railway station in Horndon Junction (now known as Darfield). A telephone bureau was opened in Darfield on July 12,1912, at therailwaystation.
Astheneedforcommunication services grew in 1924, the government public works department called for tenders for the erection of a new post o ce building with sta quarters in Darfield. The successful tender was placed by Mr FJ Narbey, a local builder.
Finally, on May 30, 1925, a grand new post o ce building withadjoiningquartersopened onthecorner ofJacksonStreet and North Railway Terrace in Darfield. Mr H.A. Knight, chairman of the Malvern County council, o cially openedthenewposto ceand Mrs White was presented with a gold key to o cially open the o ce door. Mrs White sent away the first telegram and posted the first letter to the post master general J.G Coates to thank the government for the town’s wonderful new post o ce.
The building was described as “a handsome single-story structure, built of wood on concrete foundations. The
front portion consists of a public o ce mail room, telephone bureau, private box lobby, telephone exchange, which was shifted from the railway station, and postmaster’s room. The postmaster’s private residence adjoins the o ces at the rear.”(ThePress,June3,1925).
Darfield residents enjoyed the services the post o ce provided for many years which included postal services, banking services and telephone services and indeed for many Darfield high school pupils thetelephone exchange was their first job on leaving school.
How ever all that changed in 1979. A 23-metre-high cell tower was erected to facilitate toll operations, when subscriber toll dialling was introduced, andcallsnolonger went through the exchange room at the Post O ce. Sta numbers were significantly reduced with just a few remaining to manage toll tra c areas not yet changed overtoSTD.
All services finally closed at the Darfield post o ce in NorthTerracein1995withthe Government selling o assets they no longer wished to maintain.
The building was sold to a private buyer who converted it to a family home. Several owners have since stamped their mark on the property in e orts to modernise it and

maintain the building, which is why it still exists today. The current owners, the Hynes family, areproudoftheirhome and that it has played arole in the history of Darfield. They are keen to learn more about thebuildingandtohearstories associatedwithit.
Next time you are scootering, walking, biking or driving by 34 North Terrace in Darfield, take time to pause and reflect on a grand building that once playedanimportantroleinthe daily lives of people in the township of Darfield. With thanks to Matthew Williams, Selwyn story collection SDC andThePress.

AWA: A NEW CHAPTER IN DIGITAL LIBRARY ACCESS
Selwyn District Council have partnered with Christchurch City Council to operate a shared libraries digital collection for a two-year trial period.
From1July,librarymembersin Selwyn and Christchurch will have access to an increased range of eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines available throughthenewservice, which usestheexistingLibbyapp.

Providing Total Rural & Residential Property Management Solutions

The service will be named AWA, after the network of rivers and streams that flow through the Canterbury landscape.
“The name AWA symbolises the interconnectedness of our rivers and waterways and the flow between places and people,” says Denise Kidd, Executive Director Community ServicesandFacilities.
“Thissharedpartnershipmeans library users in the Selwyn District will see a 400% increase in access to eBook and eAudio content, totalling morethan100,000titles,”
Ms Kidd says the partnership makes sense given the flow of people between our districts, where many residents live in Selwyn and work in Christchurch City and vice versa.
The partnership builds on the existing foundation of the Gammack Trust, where childrenandyoungpeople
aged 0-18 years in the Selwyn District can register for a ChristchurchCityLibrariescard to access their physical collections.
“We are hopeful that this will be the first of further library collaboration opportunities, such as programming and events, shared professional development, and extending the service to other neighbouring local authorities.”
Over the trial period both Selwyn and Christchurch will conduct regular monitoring of data and usage with a review of the collaboration taking placepriortoJune2027.

PROPOSED BUS SERVICE CANNED
Environment Canterbury Regional Council (Ecan) decided not to go ahead with the Darfield to Rolleston bus trial at an Environment Canterbury Regional Council meetinglastweek.
Submissions opposing the proposal numbered 196 out of 234 submissions and the Councilvotewas won7-6 with one councillor choosing to abstain.
ECan Chair Craig Pauling emphasised the importance of community feedback, expert input, and Council deliberations.
He said, “In response to the submissions and deliberations, as Canterbury's regional council we have an important job, to deliver what our
community and environment expectsandneedsfromus.”
“Our Annual Plan is an importanttoolthathelpsusdo that, and it is informed by community feedback and local knowledge, expert sta who are specialists in their fields, and councillors who are connected to the communities thattheyrepresent.”
Around the Council table several councillors voiced their thoughts regarding the bus service proposal citing that with 79% of submissions not supporting the proposal, it should not go ahead, and the Council had a duty to listen to the people who had raised theirconcerns.
Chair Craig Pauling wanted to thank everyone who took the
time to tell the Council what they thought about the Draft Annual Plan and for sharing their experiences and insights withthem.
“Your feedback was integral to the conversations we had around the table during Tuesday's Annual Plan deliberations,” he said. “We have now agreed to a range of policies that inform our Draft Annual Plan, which will go to Council in June to be formally adopted. The impact of these decisions is a proposed rate rise of 5.8% for the coming year, which is down from the 15.5% rise that was proposed for the year in our Long-Term Plan2024-34.”

A couple who'd been married for over 50 years was sitting on the sofa, when the wife said, "Dear, do you remember how you used to sit close to me?"
He moved over and sat close to her.
"Dear," she continued, "do you remember how you used to hold me tight?"
He reached over and held her tight.
"And," she went on, "do you remember how you used to hug me and kiss me and nibble on my ear?"
With that, her husband got up and started to walk out of the room.
"Where are you going?" she asked. "Well," answered the husband, "I have to get my teeth."
