Darfield High School Year 13 students Louis Ridgen and Mason Thompson are both part of the 2023 Selwyn Combined Schools 1st XV Rugby Team that competes in the Miles Toyota 1st XV Premiership Grade. This team is selected from students that attend High School at Darfield, Ellesmere, Lincoln, Rolleston and Akaroa.

They train as a unit for five hours a week, which includes gym sessions and also spend time reviewing a video of the game played the previous weekend and previewing the opposition they will be playing next.

Louis has played rugby for at least thirteen years and has been in the Prop position for as long as he can remember.

During the off-season, he attends 4-5 gym sessions per week, and he also referees touch over the

summer and junior club rugby to keep up his fitness.

“Being part of the Team is a fantastic opportunity, the culture is fantastic and all the players have come together quickly to form a united group. Playing 1st XV rugby allows me to learn and play at the highest level of school boy rugby,” commented Louis.

“I recommend anyone wanting to trial for the Team in the future, to work hard and never think you are doing too much fitness or strength work. There will always be someone in the same position as you working harder to try and take your spot.

“I think to be a successful rugby player you need to work hard as an individual as well as in the team environment. You also need to look after your body and be passionate about the sport.

“At this stage, I plan to keep training and playing to the best of my ability so I’m selected in the starting fifteen each week. Hopefully, I have the skills and ability to also be selected for the Ellesmere Under 18 rep team and the Crusader Knights training camps at the end of the season,” Louis concluded.

Mason has also played for thirteen years and his position in the Team is Openside Flanker. He does roughly two hours of individual training each week, which is mainly cardio and ball skills, on top of the team training.

JUST GENTLEMEN

Three mediums, three signature styles and three gentlemen for the month of June at Te Huanui. ‘Just Gentlemen’ brings together photographs by Kevin Clarke, paintings by Andrew Dickison and woodwork by Ben Groters, highlighting each unique perspective on New Zealand. The Exhibition opens from 6pm Friday, May 26th and runs until Thursday, June 29th. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening, drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Kevin Clarke loves to teach and pass on his knowledge and passion for photography. He is often exhibiting his work and

being invited as a keynote speaker at conferences and workshops worldwide. His work portfolio covers commercial, landscape and sporting photography projects around the world. Photography has always been his passion, and the gift of sharing a love of the landscape is priceless to him.

Andrew Dickison is influenced by early abstract artists such as Jackson Pollock , Klimt , Kandinsky and New Zealander John Drawbridge. He likes working in a variety of mediums, and enjoys the freedom of abstract expressionism, often using a variety of homemade implements and tools to create his own style and add fine detail to his work.

Some of his most recent works are inspired by New Zealand landscapes and wildlife, in a minimal and contemporary style.

Ben Groters was born and raised locally. He has a strong background in agriculture and a passion for the outdoors. Ben has spent time travelling the world in various jobs, sketching in travel diaries as he went. After studying art at Darfield High School, Ben worked mostly with fine-tipped black ink pens to create freehand landscapes, often imagery with much detail and contrast set in moments of relative calm. His current work with wood initially came about in the climate of Covid Lockdowns, which has led to creations that show a similar contrast as black and white drawings in their sharp-edged shapes made from recycled timber or rescued firewood, which form tributes to animals that make New Zealand the place it is today.

SELWYN SCHOOLS’ RUGBY TEAM

..continued from front page.

“My favourite part of being involved in the Team is the honour that comes with playing in one of the most prestigious rugby competitions in the world for my age. There is something awesome about knowing you will be playing against, and possibly alongside, future international rugby players,” commented Mason.

“Many people inspire me to play rugby to the best of my ability, but the two main groups are, and will always be, my family and friends. They are all very supportive and encourage me to do my best every-time I put my boots on.

“I encourage anyone who wants to give rugby a good crack to train and trail for the Selwyn Schools Combined Squad. It requires a lot of commitment and courage, but if you are

willing to push through the pain, you will learn so much from the experienced players and coaches in this environment.

“The Team has built an environment to provide players with all the skills necessary to become a professional. If this is something you truly want to do, coming from the rural community, I believe this is the best way to achieve it. Will Gualter showed this when he made it into the Crusaders from the Selwyn Schools Combined 1st XV Team. Since then there has been a few others that have been named in the Junior Crusaders Squad,” Mason explained.

“I plan to continue playing rugby next year, whether that be in town playing Metro Colts or back kitted up in the blue and gold of West Melton. My ultimate goal is to receive a Rugby Scholarship

to the University of Canterbury and to play in their Colts team.

“I believe the key to becoming a successful rugby player is a lot of passion and hard work. You have to have the passion when the going gets tough, and when you've just been thrashed at training, to want to get up and do it all again tomorrow purely because of your love for the sport. Passion and hard work will always beat natural talent,” Mason concluded.

At this stage of the season, the Team has won against St Andrew’s College and narrowly lost to Christ College.

This Saturday the team come up against Shirley Boy’s High School at Shirley, kicking off at 1pm. The team at the Malvern News wish them both the best for the rest of the season as well as their future endeavours.

KIRWEE TREE HOUSE

In March, Kirwee Tree House Learning Centre appointed a new Centre Manager, Camille Cuff , as previous Centre Manager, Kendall Hall left to have her baby and move to Wellington. Originally from Tauranga, Camille moved to Selwyn for the lifestyle, as she is an avid horse rider. Camille is a highly experienced teacher and has loads of managerial experience, having been a key member of a large home-based franchising company where Camille looked after all operations for the region and multiple businesses. The Centre received amazing support from Fonterra, enabling them to fundraise for their beautiful whare, which is now built and being enjoyed in their garden. The children and teachers love this new structure. Thanks, Fonterra! Recently, Kirwee Tree House celebrated Mother’s Day and hosted a pink ribbon afternoon tea. They had a fantastic turnout and are very proud to support this great cause. Their gardening programme with Anita Croft from Growing Kiwi Gardeners is really expanding and starting to become established. All the winter vegetables for Matariki are planted, and the children love having the garden component woven into the curriculum. Chef, Michelle Hill, has been working hard on re-jigging the menu for winter. She always chooses seasonal and local produce, as well as what is grown at the Centre. The children are excited to see some lovely warm additions, like warm porridge

with compote and hearty soups!

Kirwee Tree House has a couple of spaces coming available over the next few months as some gorgeous five years olds make their big step into school. Spaces are also coming available in the Nursery as some toddler’s transition to the kowhai room. The Centre is a modern purpose -built learning centre located in the heart of Kirwee. They are a fully catered centre meaning

that you only need to drop of your child with a change of clothes. The Centre provides meals, nappies and wipes.

“Feedback from Kirwee Model School is that our preschoolers are brave and excited as they are already familiar with the School, the environment and the teachers due to our transition to school programme,” commented Kirwee Tree House Learning Centre Director, Jessica Boyes

BIKE TRACK REBUILD

The special Glentunnel Bike Track was constructed in 2006 as a claybased mountain bike track weaved through eucalyptus trees on Glentunnel School land adjacent to the Glentunnel Domain. The Domain is the central sports ground for Glentunnel, Whitecliffs, Coalgate, Hororata, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge residents, it also neighbours the Glentunnel campground.

The Track was severely damaged on Friday, September 10th, 2021, when sixteen trees were uprooted from the 160kph winds, causing irreparable damage to the Bike Track course.

Glentunnel School Principal Ed Trotter said, “The vision for the new Bike Track is to create a place of connection where all generations of people can come

together in a safe environment to exercise and learn bike skills which adds to the overall hauora (wellbeing) of our community.”

The Bike Track, for all wheels eg: bikes, scooters etc, has a total area of 55m x 36m (1,980m2) and will include a mix of asphalt, natural and wooden elements with native planting throughout to create interest, shade and to help divide the areas. The aim is to begin building the Bike Track in November 2023.

“The total cost of this project is $86,000. The School and community have already raised $40,000 towards this project. The School will maintain and manage the track once it is built, so if we can get support for the capital costs, we know that this will be an amazing space for all in many

years to come,” Ed concluded.

The Hororata Community Trust is supporting the Glentunnel School with this fundraising and has helped set up a raffle.

“This Bike Track will be open to everyone in the wider community and will be a great space for people to come together while learning bike skills. We hope everyone gets behind this project,” said Cindy Driscoll Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer.

“People can buy a raffle ticket (2,500 only) to help our community rebuild the Bike Track, and be in to win one of ten prizes - total prize pool value is $3,500! Tickets are $10 each and are selling fast!

Tickets are available from Glentunnel School, www.hororata.org.nz or various local businesses,” Cindy concluded.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

Budget 2023 shows why New Zealand needs a change of direction and a change of Government this year. Finance Minister Grant Robertson promised a bread-and -butter Budget. What he delivered was a spending spree creating a massive increase in deficits and debt climbing for years to come.

This is the blowout Budget, the culmination of Grant Robertson’s massive spending spree as Finance Minister for six years. Mr Robertson has blown his own spending limits for the sixth Budget in a row.

The deficit has blown out to $7.6 billion - a whopping $7.1 billion increase. The return to surplus has been delayed.

Operating spending has blown out to $137 billion this year, up $61 billion since Labour entered office.

Debt has blown out to $95 billion by 2026.

Kiwis are already paying the price for Mr Robertson’s addiction to spending - and now Treasury confirms Mr Robertson’s

spending will mean interest rates are higher for longer, meaning Kiwis will pay for years to come when they refix their mortgages.

Mr Robertson should have adjusted tax brackets for inflation to provide relief for hard-working Kiwis. But yet again, Labour has refused to do the right thing - instead deciding that they can spend taxpayers’ money better than Kiwis.

New Zealanders hoped for some relief from the tough conditions that Labour’s economic mismanagement has produced. What they will get is cheaper bus rides for those who qualify, but still nothing for the majority of hard-working New Zealanders.

National knows we need to fix the economy to lift incomes and afford the public services Kiwis deserve - but Labour’s only plan is to spend.

A National Government will fix the economy, end wasteful spending and deliver meaningful tax relief for hard-working Kiwis. The economic fix has to be based

on productive growth, and the good news is that New Zealand has no shortage of amazing businesses and entrepreneurs. A National Government will be one of pro-growth, proinnovation and pro-investment because, ultimately, that will create a stronger economy and it’s a stronger economy that will deliver higher incomes and better public services for New Zealanders.

HIP HOP WORLD CHAMPS

Eighteen year old, Dante Kalotapu is heading to Phoenix Arizona, USA, at the end of July to live his dream of dancing in the Hip Hop World Championship.

He has been dancing since the age of six and at the beginning of this year was selected to join a dance team in Auckland, and has since been selected to compete at the HHI 2023 World Hip Hop Championships alongside his crew, Idescendents.

Dante is a fun, sweet, caring, respectable and dedicated young man and has strong connections to the local area, spending most of his school holidays with his great grandmother Margaret Holliday and grandmother Pamela (Pam) Davies, both long term Sheffield residents. His great great great great grandfather was T W Adams , an early settler in Greendale.

Dante’s parents Melissa and John Kalotapu, were married in Sheffield, and the family lived there, Kirwee and West Melton, before settling in Rolleston.

Dante attended Annabel’s Nursery, West Melton Early Learning Centre, Clearview Primary in Rolleston, Kirkwood Intermediate and Burnside High School.

He was involved in the Jump Jam team throughout his primary school years and started dancing at Ignite Studio in Prebbleton, mainly learning Break Dancing. In 2014, while at Swarm Studio, he auditioned and got into a Hip Hop crew and started competing. During this time, the group danced at Christmas in the Park, Canterbury Rams basketball games, appeared on What Now, just to name a few. In 2017, he started competing in a crew at Zion Studio, and in 2022, he was competing with Ace Studio.

In January this year, Dante got the opportunity to audition for Indentity Dance Company, one of the top New Zealand crews based in Auckland. Much to his surprise, he was successful! Dante was given a week to locate to Auckland to make his dream of dancing on the world stage come true. Not having ever lived on his own or so far away from his family, Dante being fearless, got on the plane, found a full time job and a studio apartment. His hard work and commitment to his dancing has paid off, with his crew winning the Hip Hop International New Zealand (HHINZ) Nationals, which qualified them to compete in the World Competition in Phoenix, against crews from fifty five countries.

Dante is working to meet his daily living costs while trying to save hard to fund this trip himself. A very good friend of the family, Rainbow Oveson, has set up a give-a-little page to help him achieve his goals.

If you would like to assist in Dante’s journey to compete on the World stage in Phoenix, Arizona alongside his crew, I-descendents this July/August please donate to his give-a-little page! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

POPPY’S EUROPEAN ADVENTURE

Local talented skier, Poppy Freeman, with Mum Annabel and big brother Will in tow, headed off for a five week ski and sightseeing trip in February. Leaving injured brother Tom and Dad at home to feed the animals and fend for themselves. After a little look around Munich, they headed to Innsbruck Austria, to meet up with Henry, another brother who was there to compete in the Freeride World Tour Qualifier Series. They set up camp and meet up with the local Cookson family, who were nearing the end of their trip. On the second day on the snow, a tragic accident occurred, claiming the life of Will Cookson. This threw a large curve ball into plans and created a new challenge for Poppy, whose first event was the following weekend. She firstly had to get back on the snow and then mentally prepare herself for competing on the biggest venue she had contended on.

A special thanks to the New Zealand crew who were over there competing in the World Tour or Qualifiers Craig Murray and Jamesa Hampton, also Dion Newport New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour (NZJFT) Director, for their love and support to both the Cookson and Freeman families in these trying times. The true spirit of Mt Olympus ‘where no matter what adversity confronts you, you dust yourself off and achieve what you set out to do’. So with the support of the Kiwi crew, and from those at home, Poppy headed to the next challenge. Her first event was in Chamonix France, in the Under 15 2**. This was a step up from what she had been competing in back home, steeper, longer and visual inspection only (not allowed on the course beforehand). There were thirteen in her category, and she had a great run, finishing on top of the podium. Her next competition was the

following weekend in Anton Austria, where she again had a strong run repeating the success of the previous week with another first place finish. Her last event was held at Nendez in Switzerland, where she stepped up to the Under 18 category on a huge venue. She probably had her worst run of the three but still managed a fifth place in a very strong field.

Poppy was stoked with her results, and this experience has given her confidence heading towards her dream of one day representing New Zealand at Worlds or the Winter Olympics if the Freeride discipline is added in the future.

Poppy’s plans for this season are to do some race training to improve technique, help coach the junior girls at Olympus, compete in NZJFT events and most importantly, have fun ripping it up on the slopes!

GET CREATIVE ABOUT WASTE

Lincoln Envirotown Trust is encouraging creative school students to think about waste differently and enter the Selwyn Waste Art Competition.

The Competition is open to all students in Year 7 or above attending Selwyn schools or being home schooled in the district.

The art pieces must be assembled or constructed from previously used materials that otherwise would have likely gone to landfill. The artwork is aimed at making people reconsider their views on rubbish and reusing. All entrants receive a prize, with special prizes

awarded for age category winners, as well as an overall prize.

The presentation of awards will take place in Te Ara Ātea, Rolleston on the weekend of 26th and 27th August, and the art will be exhibited at the venue during this period. This is the perfect venue, and Lincoln Envirotown are very grateful to the Selwyn District Council’s Community and Learning team who invited us to enjoy the use of this space again. The response to this recently introduced project has been overwhelming. In 2021, there were twenty two entries, and

last year there were thirty four pieces of art presented. The judges from the Youth Council, along with a local artist and library team member were hugely impressed with the high standard of work.

We hope to see many interested young artists again this year. Schools have been provided with details, but an information pack can also be obtained by emailing or phoning Dave Fitzjohn

"I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them."

We were driving in my friend Larry's new car. I asked him about its features. He listed the usual, then added: "It tells me to slow down as I approach the speed limit. It warns me when I have to stop. It points out solid no-passing lines." I expressed my amazement. "But," he explained, "these features work only when my wife is in the car."
