Bike Track Rebuild

The special Glentunnel Bike Track was constructed in 2006 as a claybased mountain bike track weaved through eucalyptus trees on Glentunnel School land adjacent to the Glentunnel Domain. The Domain is the central sports ground for Glentunnel, Whitecliffs, Coalgate, Hororata, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge residents, it also neighbours the Glentunnel campground.

The Track was severely damaged on Friday, September 10th, 2021, when sixteen trees were uprooted from the 160kph winds, causing irreparable damage to the Bike Track course.

Glentunnel School Principal Ed Trotter said, “The vision for the new Bike Track is to create a place of connection where all generations of people can come together in a safe environment to exercise and learn bike skills which adds to the overall hauora (wellbeing) of our community.”

The Bike Track, for all wheels eg: bikes, scooters etc, has a total area of 55m x 36m (1,980m2) and will include a mix of asphalt, natural and wooden elements with native planting throughout to create interest, shade and to help divide the areas. The aim is to begin building the Bike Track in November 2023.

“The total cost of this project is $86,000. The School and community have already raised $40,000 towards this project. The School will maintain and manage the track once it is built, so if we can get support for the capital costs, we know that this will be an amazing space for all in many years to come,” Ed concluded.

The Hororata Community Trust is supporting the Glentunnel School with this fundraising and has helped set up a raffle.

“This Bike Track will be open to everyone in the wider community and will be a great space for people to come together while learning bike skills. We hope everyone gets behind this project,” said Cindy Driscoll Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer.

“People can buy a raffle ticket (2,500 only) to help our community rebuild the Bike Track, and be in to win one of ten prizes - total prize pool value is $3,500! Tickets are $10 each and are selling fast!

Tickets are available from Glentunnel School, www.hororata.org.nz or various local businesses,” Cindy concluded.
