NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

It’s been a busy few weeks in and around Selwyn. Parliament has been in recess so I've been able to spend more time in the electorate than usual - this means I've been able to hold eight coffee meetings at cafes around the district, host a pub politics night in Dunsandel, attended four Anzac Day services, speak to the Rolleston Central Probus group, collect for the Templeton RSA on Poppy Day, as well as meet with dozens of constituents in my office. I have also knocked on hundreds of doors in different towns and delivered thousands of fliers - all to try and make myself as accessible as possible to our community.

There have also been several key policy announcements from the National Party - we're aiming to tackle the issues that matter to New Zealanders.
As we all know, New Zealand’s health system is in crisis, with a severe shortage of nurses and midwives contributing to ballooning waitlists, delays accessing treatment and dangerously overcrowded emergency departmentssomething we are particularly vulnerable to here in Canterbury.
Rural healthcare is in desperate need of more resourcing, as I’m sure many of you have experienced first-hand.

New Zealand does not train enough nurses or midwives to address this shortage, and the ones we do train are being aggressively recruited to move overseas.
Recently, Dr Shane Reti announced our plan to deliver more nurses and midwives into the health workforce. Under National, the Government will pay nurses’ and midwives’ student loan repayments up to $4,500 a year for the first five years of their career. This means that a nurse, or midwife would be $22,500 better off over five years, and incentivise them to stay working in New Zealand after graduating.
National will also make New Zealand more competitive in the global competition for skilled workers, by allowing qualified overseas nurses and midwives to come here on a six-month temporary visa without a job offer to look for work and to bring their immediate family members with them.
We have also announced that we will help deliver faster access to mental health services for vulnerable New Zealanders by boosting community providers and NGOs. Our policy, named the Mental Health Innovation Fund, will increase access to mental health and addiction support and power up charitable organisations that are delivering positive outcomes for New Zealanders where the Government is failing.
We believe that rather than trying to run everything from Wellington, this fund will deliver more resources to the frontline by scaling up NGOs and community providers - such as Gumboot Friday - who are delivering better mental health outcomes, faster and more efficiently than the Government. This $20 million investment could deliver the equivalent of more than 130,000 additional free counselling sessions over four years.
If we can form a Government, National has committed to increasing health funding in line with inflation. We will also cut Labour's wasteful spending on contractors and consultants by $400 million a year in order to fund these vital frontline services.
