The Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to thank those who turned up to support their magnificent truck pull. With the assistance of the Hororata and Springfield Fire Brigades, it was a great success.

People had been talking around the town all week about this

event, and it lived up to expectations.

The fourteen strong crew managed to pull the fully loaded fire truck from the library to the clock tower, led by the Hororata fire ute, with the Darfield Fire Brigade van following.

This April, be transported into a magical world where good conquers evil, and the laughs are plentiful. Kirwee Players Kids are performing Disney’s Aladdin Jr at Kirwee Community Hall from the 21st - 23rd. The cast of eighteen are aged between eight years old and eighteen years old, and for many, it is their first taste of the magic of musical theatre, while others are in their perfect place. The ability and talent of this young cast outshines many adults, and has seen the continued development of musical theatre for our junior members. It is hard to believe they are all children!

Aladdin is performed by the multi-talented and cheeky-faced Sammy Aker , his quick repartee with the Genie played by Lily Partridge is a pure comedic delight. These two have performed together before (Jack and Baker’s wife in, ‘Into the Woods Jr’, 2022), and it shows in the ease in which they work. Both have a real love for the stage, with voices you could listen to for hours. Sammy’s confidence shines out in the song ‘Prince Ali’, and you believe every word he says. Lily has her

own solo with ‘Friend Like Me’, and who wouldn’t want to be her friend, a magical genie who can grant your wishes. Added to this talented duo is the grace and beauty of Susanna Tully, who plays Jasmine. She gives just the right mixture of tomboy and princess to vitalise the

character. Special mention must be given to the wonderful harmonies these youngsters create. For a thoroughly great school holiday treat for the whole family, grab your tickets today.

BROKEN MOVEMENT

Head along and listen to former All Black, Zac Guildford’s story on Thursday, March 30th, at the Darfield Baptist Church. This free event will also include Jacob Skilling, founder of the Broken Movement Trust.

Sometimes things can seem overwhelming, and it can feel like you can’t cope or it’s too difficult to manage how you're feeling. You may simply just be having a bad day, or you may have an ongoing mental health problem that needs support. The important thing is not to try to cope on your own and talk to somebody.

Zac and Jacob know all too well what it's like to struggle. Zac has found his new path after struggling with issues of alcohol and gambling and Jacob through a background of trauma, abuse, and a broken home, as well as, addiction and learning issues. Both Zac and Jacob are now sharing their experiences to help others find a better life and understand where help can be found.

This is a chance to hear both their stories and perhaps understand how their situation might be similar to your own experience.

Living and working rurally has its own special challenges that not everybody understands. The

Broken Movement Trust can help and has strong links with the Rural Support Trust and Farmstrong, who specialise in helping the rural community. If you are feeling under the pump and not coping too well, take some time out for yourself and the first step towards a new start. Or if you know somebody struggling, why not reach out and bring them along, at the very worst you get to have a yarn with a former All Black and a cuppa. Arrive early as there are only 120 seats available.

For more information see advertisement in this issue.

Come and listen to Former All Black Zac Guildford & Jacob Skilling

Together they will talk about their personal stories and a journey to better mental health. They are both ambassadors for the Broken Movement Trust. Zac & Jacob will share their stories about hardship and finding their feet in the most challenging of circumstances.

HELPING STUDENTS

For close to twenty six years Barbara Broughton has been an educational advocate for children who have been on the edge of the classroom. The types of children who are failing in the traditional school system are often misunderstood and wrongly considered 'difficult'. It was these students who became Barbara’s calling. With a passion

AfternearlytwentysixyearsatSt.AndrewsCollegePreparatorySchool, BarbaraBroughtonmovestofocusonlocalprivatestudents. for professional development, she has continuously adopted the latest research for the advancement of neurodiverse children and those with specific learning requirements. Neurodiversity is the umbrella term for people who have a range of specific neuro types, some of which you have probably heard of like Dyslexia, and others you may not have like Dyscalculia. Neurodiversity includes people who are Autistic, A.D.H.D, A.D.D, Dyslexic, Dyscalculic, Dyspraxic, Dysgraphic and frequently pairs with emotional and behavioural challenges.

Following teacher training in Dunedin, Barbara moved to Canterbury and married local farmer, Gordon Broughton. This saw her take a position at Darfield High School before having a family and later briefly taught an extension program at Darfield Primary School. Stepping back into teaching after having children saw Barbara actually step out of the classroom, teaching a behaviourally challenged child at home. She observed the child working out his specific needs in a difficult home environment, and together they learned to skateboard. Barbara's next step ignited her passion for the hard to reach kids. In 1996 she was awarded a Government Scholarship for a Diploma in Special Needs. This was an emerging teaching specialty at that time.

The following year Barbara began at St Andrews’ College Preparatory School. Starting from the ground up, she established and grew the learning support department over twenty seven years, providing a pathway for success for students who were falling behind age expected standards, or were neurodiverse with specific learning requirements. The support she offered was not only for the students but often supporting the parents in the journey. For parents of these children, navigating the complex system to get support can be overwhelming, and Barbara sees

supporting the parents as a key part to the students success. In her role as Head of Learning Support, Barbara developed a system that is a complete wraparound approach for students that includes: external consultant support providing specialist services and interventions (eg psychologists, and occupational therapists); research proven programs and innovative approaches (eg structured literacy before it was widely known as being the best way to teach literacy). All are delivered within the school day in ‘real time’.

There is an increasing awareness of students who need specific and specialist input to succeed. Schools are crying out for trained teachers and specialist consultants. “Research has provided more knowledge of the best interventions for these students, but funding for schools is not keeping up. This is contributing to the falling standards of literacy and numeracy in New Zealand,” commented Barbara.

Barbara is now moving to private consultancy focusing on local students who need specific support to find success at school.

EASTER ART WEEKEND

Since its inception, the biennial Castle Hill Village Easter Art weekend has always been a nonprofit community-based, fun, family event supporting local artists. Planning is well underway for this coming Easter, (9th - 10th April).

With fifty artists included, it’s a celebration of the many artists that gain inspiration from the area, through an exhibition of work, and various workshops, for visitors to attend throughout the weekend.

It is no surprise that this beautiful region attracts and inspires many artists. The Craigieburn area, Castle Hill, and Kura Tawhiti have always been influential, with a variety of artists producing some wonderful work over the years. The last event was the biggest ever, and it’s great to build on that further with the marquee shop and workshops alongside the main exhibition in the Village Hall, supported by Selwyn Libraries, who will be running their own felting workshop alongside the event. Over the years, it has provided

support for the environment in which Castle Hill Village is situated, in monetary and practical ways to Kea Conservation, the Craigieburn Trails and wilding pine control. The event organisers can be contacted via their website castlehillcreative.nz, which has more details about the event and how to join in.

The Exhibition Opening Evening will be held on Good Friday in the Castle Hill Village Hall, accompanied by various workshops in and around the village over the following two days.

As well as children having the opportunity to attend some of the workshops over the weekend they may be interesting in entering their own artwork for the exhibition?

There are two sections open to children:

Under 12 - Saturday 4.30pm. “Fancy Dress bike competition”. You need to still be able to ride your bike, but decorate it as you please and yourself too if you wish, and perhaps win some prizes.

12—18 years; There will be an area set aside for emerging artists in the main hall. This Art weekend is supported by Selwyn Libraries and the Castle Hill Community Association. See advert alongside for more details about the event. To find out more about the minimal charge workshops visit: castlehillcreative.nz/ workshops

EXPERIENCE THE GLOW

The Hororata Glow Festival is an immersive experience with something magical to discover in every corner. The Hororata Domain will come alive with the Hororata Glow Festival on Saturday, 13th May 2023, with a postponement date of Sunday, 14th May, in case the weather is not favourable on Saturday.

“Our community loves welcoming people to the Hororata Glow Festival, and we look forward to bringing new experiences to the Festival that will delight the young and young at heart,” explains Cindy Driscoll from the Hororata Community Trust, who is partnering with Ballooning Canterbury to stage this popular event.

Hot air balloons will inflate like giant lanterns and glow rhythmically to music performing a night glow. As a unique treat Buster, the British Bulldog will be performing this year. Buster is a special shape hot air balloon that will join Ballooning Canterbury and other New Zealand balloon crews for the Festival.

“We are excited to have Buster coming to Hororata from the UK. It is the first time we have had an international special shape at the event. There has been a lot of logistics to get Buster here, and we would like to thank the Interislander who have supported us with this,” commented Michael Oakley from Ballooning Canterbury.

“Before the night glow, people can walk through a cold inflated balloon and interact with pilots to learn more about the art of

flying a hot air balloon. I recommend people get to the event early to avoid missing out on these experiences,” Michael concluded.

A vibrant festival surrounds the hot air balloons night glow performance. Capitol City, an eleven piece band, will be rocking following the balloon performance, and the University of Canterbury will have new interactive science demonstrations to wow everyone. Don’t miss the UV art zone or the magical fairy tree and garden, plus rides on a Noddy Train. A vast array of food will be available, as well as stalls to stock up on winter staples.

The Hororata Glow Festival is the only event of its kind in the South Island and sold out in 2021. “We have 130 volunteers involved in making this Festival happen, it is a platform for community groups to fundraise from and profits go towards developing the new Hororata Community Hub,” Cindy concluded.

Tickets must be purchased online; there will be no gate sales. Children under 16 years are free.

CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP

After thirty three years of owning the Glentunnel Garage, Yerry van Leeuwen and Jane van Leeuwen-Vaissaire have decided it’s time to retire and have recently sold the Garage to new owners Kyle and Olivia Challis from Challis Motorcycles in Darfield.

The Garage was originally purchased from the Higgens family and has been a big part of their life. As a close, hardworking family with many combined talents and dedication to customers and the community, they made the business a success. Yerry and Jane feel it has been a privilege to have served the community for so many years.

The business has seen many ups and downs over the years, including a fire, economic downturns and long term illness, but it has remained strong from the numerous customers, family and friends who have supported the business.

Over the years, there have also been changes from the main business of WOF, farm engineering, car and general repairs, with a side line of steampunk art and haymaking added to help grow the business. Yerry has made many items that are appreciated around the area, including the Glentunnel School bell stand, the information stand at the Glentunnel Hall, various coal carts, as well as minions, punk art gates and braziers. The Garage has also been a petrol station, which was open seven days a week until the fire in 1999.

“Our motto at that time was, open seven days, just for you!” commented Jane. There have been many special memories made over the years, including when the Garage was

closed for a week to become a filming set for the movie Snake Skin, as well as, Christmas barbeques to show appreciation to staff, customers, family and friends.

“We would like to make a special mention of our daughter Yerane and son Jeremy who have been a big part of the business from a young age right through until now.

“Also, a big thank you to Jacky, Donna and the mechanics Justin, Bruce (RIP), Eldad and Chris , who is known by many customers and staying on, who have been part of the team for

many years.

“The local posties, visiting distributors and suppliers and Oxford Couriers have all helped the business with their fantastic service,” Jane added.

“Thank you to our fantastic, loyal customers, without your support, the business wouldn’t have been the success it was. There are too many people to thank, none of you have been forgotten, and your loyalty meant a lot to us.

“We wish Kyle and Olivia all the best as they make their mark on the business moving forward,” Jane concluded.

The opportunity for farmers to see, touch and operate the latest in agricultural equipment returns this year as the countdown commences to the South Island Agricultural Field Days, held at Kirwee from March 29th - 31st.

Field Days organisers report exhibitor interest has been stronger than ever, with all sites selling out, including the additional laneway sites the organisers elected to add to this year’s event.

Committee Chairman Hayden Dorman said, “despite the tough times machinery distributors have had in the past two years in sourcing equipment and parts due to shipping and Covid delays, all brands have stepped up with their best and latest equipment for farmers this year. “The Field Days provide an opportunity for people to really do their homework on what the best purchase decision might be after some of the challenges in the past couple of years,” Hayden added.

A key appeal of the Field Days is the opportunity for farmers to scrutinise potential equipment purchases closely before committing.

With its easily accessible, flat site in central Canterbury, the Kirwee event has become popular with both farmers and contractors keen to get to grips with the latest gear.

in the past year,” Andrew added. With climate change, maize is becoming a more viable option in Canterbury, with maize silage a high value feed crop commonly grown in the North Island holding strong appeal for southern farmers.

The planted crop on the Kirwee site showcases different outcomes using three different drill types, including a strip till drill and a later planted variety of maize.

“Despite the challenges of the past two years in sourcing and servicing equipment, machinery companies appreciate the SIAFD focused, farmer friendly approach enabling them to have indepth one on one contact with their ultimate clients,” Andrew concluded. But it will not only be machinery nuts who will get something out of the event. Organisers have gone to efforts to keep the Field Days’ appeal broad across the rural community. This includes also supporting a growing number of agritech exhibitors keen to showcase their latest developments, incorporating an Innovations Award with the winner announced during the event. A wide range of quality food and drink vendors will be on hand offering some of the best local offerings to visitors.

Message from Nicola Grigg

It’s Autumn show season and I’m really looking forward to attending the Malvern A&P Show and South Island Agricultural Field Days this month!

I will have a National Party stall at both events and would love to see as many of you as I can, so feel free to come over for a chat. I will be hosting a number of my National Party colleagues at Field Days, including Agriculture Spokesperson Todd Muller and National Leader Christopher Luxon, on Thursday 30th March. Please do come along to share your views and ideas with usor just say hi!

Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn.

Demonstration

Co-ordinator Andrew Stewart said, “all the respected brands of tractors, machines and cultivation equipment will be on display this year. I expect up to fifty different pieces of equipment will be on active demonstration throughout the Field Days’ duration.

“We have doubled the area put into maize this year for demonstrating drilling methods and harvesters in response to a lot of farmer interest in the crop as an option instead of importing more expensive supplements as costs have risen

With one eye on recent weather events in the North Island, organisers have also welcomed the offer by ACE Homes to put a movable home up for auction, with proceeds going to the Rural Support Trust.

“The heart of the South Island Field Days are the rural communities on whom our exhibitors rely so much. It is an event to celebrate not only the latest and greatest in equipment and machinery but also the innovation and inspiration that our rural communities generate,” Hayden concluded.

Message from Sam Broughton

Hot on the heels of the Malvern A&P Show is New Zealand’s longest running Field Days, the South Island Agricultural Field Days between March 29th - 31st, in Kirwee. This is a great day out for the whanau, but the main aim of the field days is to offer farmers and others in the rural sector the opportunity to get together and experience first-hand the cutting-edge developments in agricultural machinery and services. With more than 100 specialist agricultural machines taking part in live demonstrations each day, it’s a must for anybody keen to develop their capability or update their farming equipment from harvesters, cultivators, drills and other specialist equipment. Head along and celebrate our strong rural heritage and see the very latest technology our district leads with. Mark up your diary and make a day of it with your friends and family.

Innovation & Technology

Innovation and technology are key themes at this year’s South Island Agricultural Field Days, featuring an exciting lineup of entries for the event’s Innovation Award.

This year’s entries include technology and innovation as varied as a methane reduction tool for dairy farm effluent ponds, to a simple means of anchoring centre pivot irrigators prior to a storm event.

Awards Co-ordinator Andrew Stewart said, “the Field Days have a well-established reputation for showcasing emerging innovation that is practical and usable by farmers looking for solutions to everyday farming challenges, and emerging ‘big picture’ issues like greenhouse gas emissions and water quality improvement.

“This year is certainly no exception. Many of our visitors will already be familiar with the Ravensdown Ventures EcoPond technology that is capable of removing almost all the methane from dairy farm effluent, along with bacteria and phosphate,” Andrew added.

Another Canterbury-sourced innovation entry is an innovative tech from FieldMate for protecting the electric drive motor used in seed drills. The innovative drive system enables operators to define the distance between each seed released by the seeding disc on a drill, ensuring the distance between seeds is kept tightly controlled, ensuring even crop emergence.

29-31 MARCH 2023 KIRWEE

The technology showcased protects the rev counter sitting inside the seed drill metering system’s electric motor.

Farmers grappling with problems caused by centre pivot ruts will also welcome the opportunity to check out the latest innovation from Ruts Plus. The company’s solar powered, wirelessly operated machine follows the ground contour without any adjustments required, regardless of ground conditions. The same company has also entered a pivot rut filler for easy, economical filling of centre pivot ruts.

Farmers who have grappled with tying down their centre pivot irrigators in the face of howling gales will also appreciate Gray Engineering Solutions’ entry. Its pivot anchors were developed to provide a cost-effective, simple means of anchoring them down, reducing the impact of high winds on the expensive equipment.

“The Field Days always provide an excellent showcase for local innovation that comes from problems farmers have needed solving, and this year is no exception.

“Farmers appreciate being able to see, touch, and use this tech, knowing it is the solution to something they may have struggled with for some time,” Andrew explained.

Judging is conducted by a panel of experienced industry experts, with the winner announced during the Field Days event.

“We feel confident this year’s entries do an excellent job in maintaining the exceptional standard of innovation we have seen in past years.

“Farmers are going to enjoy having the opportunity to be among the first to engage with the class-leading technology that is going to be on display this year,” Andrew concluded. Winners of the Innovation Award also receive prize money of $2,500.

SEASON WRAP-UP

The 2022/23 Darfield Touch season continued with a good number of teams/participants enjoying a great season of playing touch, the first full season without restrictions for a couple of years. This year there were twenty mixed competition grade teams pre-Christmas. It was also great to see so many high school aged players/teams coming through having previously played through the Junior Touch grades, along with new teams joining as well. PostChristmas there were nineteen teams.

The second round of the mixed competition was completed last week, with lots of close games and so many teams showing great improvement over the season. A lot of games in the second round were very close, making for a tight competition. The Junior grades this season saw increased numbers yet again, with approximately 250 to 260 registered players, and an additional two grades created, plus the skills sessions. The progress of skills in all players has been amazing to watch.

Congratulations to all the teams who played in the finals, the prize winners, and thank you to everyone who played for a great season. A huge thank you also to all the volunteers who have made this season another success - parents, coaches, refs and those on the organising committee.

FANTASTIC 4WD TOUR

As the sun rose, four-wheel drives rolled into the Quartz Hill Station yard to start the hotly anticipated Windwhistle 4WD High Country Tour on Sunday, March 19th, a fundraising event for the Windwhistle Primary School.

After a cuppa and tasty muffin served by school parents the convoy set off, travelling through Quartz Hill. Within thirty minutes, they found themselves on a challenging track, climbing to a ridge line to be wowed with 360-degree views.

Winding down to the valley floor Colin Guild talked over the dedicated radio frequency about the 1973 snow, which impacted the Stations hugely, and the changes in technology, like weather forecasting, that now allow them to prepare for major storms.

This is a distinctive part of the country where the foothills meet the high country with varied and different ecosystems. Crossing

onto High Peak Station, James Guild spoke of his family’s work on this station to protect certain areas under QEII covenants.

The convoy then descended into Snowdon Station, across newly sown paddocks to one of the most stunning lunch spots anyone could ask for. School families again greeted people with a gourmet lunch box to enjoy while sitting amongst the tussocks soaking in the views.

Roy Veronese and Annabel Tripp spoke during lunch about farming life on Snowdon Station and their work conserving specific areas of wetlands and bush.

When crossing into Dry Acheron Station, the landscape changed from tussock lands to more rugged and rocky. At the boundary between the Dry Acheron and Big Ben Stations, both part of the Coleridge Downs farming group, Tony Plunkett spoke of the cadet’s programme they run. This programme gives

young people a pathway into agriculture.

The impressive moving catering volunteers met the convoy with afternoon tea on a terrace near the end of the track, which gave fantastic views of the Mt Hutt range, Rakaia River and the Southern Alps.

“This has been an incredible event for our whole community. We all take great pride in being able to farm in this area and we all care about the land we call home. We know some of you have travelled some distance to be with us today. Thank you all for joining us and supporting our school,” commented organising committee member, Georgie Harper

“We are all passionate about our little school, it really is the heart of our community and we must protect it for the future. Events like this show how special our whole community is, we all pull together and this makes it really enjoyable.

“Thank you to the landowners who opened their gates for us, to the sponsors who backed us and to all the volunteers; this would not have happened without you. We hope to do more of these trips in the future, so stay tuned,” Georgie concluded.

TRIATHLON SUCCESS

The Canterbury Primary Schools Triathlon held on March 14th is designed to provide Year 5 - 8 students with an opportunity to participate in a Triathlon alongside their peers. The event is hosted at South Eyre Road on a private farm. The children compete individually in three disciplines; swim, cycle and run.

Freya Tymons-Bell , age 9 and a Year 5 student at Darfield Primary School, took part. She'd won the Year 5 girls category for both the Darfield Primary School Duathlon (swim and run) on the 1st of March, and then Malvern Schools Triathlon on the 2nd of March, but had never competed at regional level for any sport as this was the first year she was old enough to do so.

Freya had never swum a race in a lake before. She'd only ever competed in swimming pools and had never gone further than 75m in one go. She had never ridden a road bike until two days before when a good friend showed her how to change gears on one of their spare bikes they were letting Freya borrow for the event. She'd never run on any length of road before; all the running she'd done was either cross country or on a sports field. On the day, Freya swam 100m in Lake Ruger, biked 7km on South Eyre Road and ran 2km on the road.

Freya's a very active girl. She plays soccer at lunchtime with

PREMIER CRICKET

her friends every day - she's going to start playing soccer with Selwyn United next term. She enjoys playing basketball each week at the high school sessions held by Selwyn Hawks. She also loves playing touch rugby each summer with her old rugby team at the Darfield Touch competition. Freya has also been dancing at TM Dance World since she was three years old. She currently takes eight classes per week, is competing in teams and is just starting to compete as a solo dancer. In between all of this, she rides her pony when there's time and is a member of Bangor Pony Club. Most importantly, she always helps her Mum on the farm at home.

“Although we knew she was fit, it was a complete unknown about how good she might be at the Triathlon,” commented Freya’s Mum, Celia Tymons

"Freya surprised herself and came in with a gun time of 35 minutes, 49 seconds to claim third place in her age group! She finished very casually, hardly out of breath, and when asked she admitted that she could easily have pushed herself harder,” Celia concluded.

Local students who were placed in the top ten:

Year 5 Girls:

2nd: Elsie Stark (West Melton)

3rd: Freya Tymons (Darfield)

8th: Pippa Knight (West Melton)

Year 6 Boys:

6th: Arlan Mayberry (West Mel)

Year 7 Boys:

7th: Oscar Le Compte (DHS)

9th: Ethan Tuffley (West Melton)

10th Ben Morten (DHS)

Year 7 Girls:

5th: Lulu Maley (DHS)

6th: Saphia Ridgen (DHS)

Year 8 Girls:

5th: Eva Reed (West Melton).

Last Saturday, Darfield secured a place in the premier competition final after a tense, low scoring game against Sefton at Sefton Domain.

Heavy rain during the week left the outfield heavy and slow, which contributed to Darfield only posting 147/9 from their allotted 45 overs.

Robbie Foulkes held the bulk of the innings together, facing 104 balls for his 51 runs. He was helped by Tom Dempster, who made 23 at a similar strike rate to Foulkes.

SPORTS RESULTS

HORORATA GOLF

Only 6 fours were hit during the innings, a reflection of the ground conditions and the precision of Sefton's bowlers. Six bowlers were used, with Makenzie Smith taking 3 wickets in the middle overs and Micah Campbell taking 2 at the top, including an inform Jordy Frew to leave Darfield 19/2. Foulkes and Dempster rebuilt but were never permitted the freedom to score. There was no lower order hitting on display as the tail scrapped for singles where they could.

A dream start to the second innings occurred with Sefton slumping to be 3 down, with 4 runs on the board as newly minted opening bowler Nick Jenkins grabbed 2 wickets in one over, and Robbie Foulkes got the experienced Matt Laffey out for a duck.

Lance Taylor proved why he has

such a good record by stubbornly resurrecting the chase. He was especially clever at manipulating the bowling to place the ball into gaps where he could scamper singles. His 67 runs from 117 balls was nearly the difference, but he was undone by a diving catch from Jordy Frew that swung the game back in Darfield's favour. Sefton required 19 to win from nearly as many balls as the tail tried to swing the ball over the boundary, but full and straight bowling from Tom Dempster and Robbie Foulkes closed the game out with 2 balls remaining, and 8 runs still to get. Darfield will play LeestonSouthbridge at Leeston Domain on Saturday, March 25th, in the final of the combined competition for a chance to win the Fulton-Wright Cup. Play begins at the earlier time of 12pm.
