FANTASTIC 4WD TOUR

The Canterbury Primary Schools Triathlon held on March 14th is designed to provide Year 5 - 8 students with an opportunity to participate in a Triathlon alongside their peers. The event is hosted at South Eyre Road on a private farm. The children compete individually in three disciplines; swim, cycle and run.

Freya Tymons-Bell , age 9 and a Year 5 student at Darfield Primary School, took part. She'd won the Year 5 girls category for both the Darfield Primary School Duathlon (swim and run) on the 1st of March, and then Malvern Schools Triathlon on the 2nd of March, but had never competed at regional level for any sport as this was the first year she was old enough to do so.

Freya had never swum a race in a lake before. She'd only ever competed in swimming pools and had never gone further than 75m in one go. She had never ridden a road bike until two days before when a good friend showed her how to change gears on one of their spare bikes they were letting Freya borrow for the event. She'd never run on any length of road before; all the running she'd done was either cross country or on a sports field. On the day, Freya swam 100m in Lake Ruger, biked 7km on South Eyre Road and ran 2km on the road.

her friends every day - she's going to start playing soccer with Selwyn United next term. She enjoys playing basketball each week at the high school sessions held by Selwyn Hawks. She also loves playing touch rugby each summer with her old rugby team at the Darfield Touch competition. Freya has also been dancing at TM Dance World since she was three years old. She currently takes eight classes per week, is competing in teams and is just starting to compete as a solo dancer. In between all of this, she rides her pony when there's time and is a member of Bangor Pony Club. Most importantly, she always helps her Mum on the farm at home.

“Although we knew she was fit, it was a complete unknown about how good she might be at the Triathlon,” commented Freya’s Mum, Celia Tymons

"Freya surprised herself and came in with a gun time of 35 minutes, 49 seconds to claim third place in her age group! She finished very casually, hardly out of breath, and when asked she admitted that she could easily have pushed herself harder,” Celia concluded.

Last Saturday, Darfield secured a place in the premier competition final after a tense, low scoring game against Sefton at Sefton Domain.

Heavy rain during the week left the outfield heavy and slow, which contributed to Darfield only posting 147/9 from their allotted 45 overs.

Robbie Foulkes held the bulk of the innings together, facing 104 balls for his 51 runs. He was helped by Tom Dempster, who made 23 at a similar strike rate to Foulkes.

Only 6 fours were hit during the innings, a reflection of the ground conditions and the precision of Sefton's bowlers. Six bowlers were used, with Makenzie Smith taking 3 wickets in the middle overs and Micah Campbell taking 2 at the top, including an inform Jordy Frew to leave Darfield 19/2. Foulkes and Dempster rebuilt but were never permitted the freedom to score. There was no lower order hitting on display as the tail scrapped for singles where they could.

A dream start to the second innings occurred with Sefton slumping to be 3 down, with 4 runs on the board as newly minted opening bowler Nick Jenkins grabbed 2 wickets in one over, and Robbie Foulkes got the experienced Matt Laffey out for a duck.

Lance Taylor proved why he has such a good record by stubbornly resurrecting the chase. He was especially clever at manipulating the bowling to place the ball into gaps where he could scamper singles. His 67 runs from 117 balls was nearly the difference, but he was undone by a diving catch from Jordy Frew that swung the game back in Darfield's favour. Sefton required 19 to win from nearly as many balls as the tail tried to swing the ball over the boundary, but full and straight bowling from Tom Dempster and Robbie Foulkes closed the game out with 2 balls remaining, and 8 runs still to get. Darfield will play LeestonSouthbridge at Leeston Domain on Saturday, March 25th, in the final of the combined competition for a chance to win the Fulton-Wright Cup. Play begins at the earlier time of 12pm.
