The long-awaited Malvern Community Service Awards were held on Monday, August 22nd, to recognise outstanding voluntary service in the Malvern community. The Hororata Community Response Team were recognised for their efforts in supporting and preparing the community for Civil Defence emergencies, which have been far from few in recent years. Nine Community Service Awards were also given to long-standing volunteers, Rob Frew, Gwen Heffernan, Gerald Innes Melissa Jebson, Val McKenzie, Pauline Pearce, Allison Rosanowski, Sara Syme and Diane Woodward. Rob was recognised for his prolonged involvement with Darfield Cricket Club, coaching young Malvern cricketers, looking after the cricket grounds and being a very proactive committee member. Allison was acknowledged for supporting the Selwyn District Sister City Committee for many years, connecting Selwyn to our sister cities around the world including Japan, China and Indonesia as well as encouraging educational opportunities. Melissa received her award for promoting and organising many successful performing arts events for the Selwyn community. Pauline and Gerald were recognised as long-serving volunteers for several groups around the Malvern area and volunteering at the Hororata Highland Games and Glow Festival. Val and Diane received their awards for several volunteer roles, including serving as Justice of the Peace and their involvement in a range of community groups and activities in Malvern. Gwen was acknowledged for her efforts as a volunteer and member of the Greendale Golf Club. “To receive the Award is a great privilege. Darfield local, Malcolm McIntyre was employed by Rowing New Zealand to coach three crews at the World Rowing Championships in Italy, last month. He coached an Under 23 Men’s Coxless Quadruple Scull, which won a Bronze medal, the Men’s Lightweight Double Scull and a Men’s Single Scull. Malcolm has been coaching rowing since 1984, and the last twenty two years have been with Christ College Rowing. He decided to finally have a go at representing New Zealand on the world stage and was extremely honoured to be part of the New Zealand Under 23 team this winter. The New Zealand Under 23 squad assembled at Lake Karapiro (an artificial reservoir lake on the Waikato River at Karapiro, eight kilometres southeast of Cambridge) at the end of Easter 2022 for a fifteen week campaign that involved eleven weeks at Lake Karapiro, two and a half weeks at Lake Pusiano in Italy, and culminating with the last one and a half weeks at Lake Varese in Italy, where the Under 23 and 19 World Rowing Championships took place. The racing itself took place over six days and involved countries from all over the globe. This regatta has not been held for two years due to the Covid Lockdown, so this was the first opportunity for countries to race against each other. “The biggest problem with training and racing was the temperature. On arrival into Italy, we had 37 degrees, and the days were regularly around 33 to 36 degrees up to the final days of the regatta,” commented Malcolm. “I am extremely proud of the rowers I coached and was absolutely delighted the New Zealand Under 23 Men’s Coxless Quadruple Scull bought home a Bronze medal. This was a huge career highlight for me,” Malcolm concluded.
