Volunteer Of The Year Award
The 2022 Canterbury Golf Annual Awards Dinner was held at Christchurch Golf Club on Friday, August 19th, after a three year hiatus due to Covid. One hundred and twenty five people turned out to celebrate, socialise and connect with the golf community. Local Hororata Golf Club members, John (Jum) and Meg
Morten received the Elmwood Trading Co. Volunteer of the Year Award. “It was a privilege to be nominated by Hororata Golf Club, and our success is largely due to the support of Club members,” commented Meg. Below is the citation written by current Hororata Golf Club President, Nicky Muir, nominating Jum and Meg for the Award. “On behalf of the Hororata Golf Club, I would like to nominate John (Jum) Morten and Meg Morten for the Volunteer Of The Year Award. I would like to nominate them together for this Award rather than against each other. Both have given a huge amount of volunteer hours across all areas during the forty years they have been associated with the Club. Meg and John have held most administrative and management roles, including President, and both lead by example. John, in recent times took on the Club project of building a café. This was no easy task, but with a lot of hard work and determination, this café is completed and has become an important part of the Club community. During the last year, John decided that the Club needed a custom-built shed to house our motorised carts. It needed to be near the office to make it easier for our office volunteers. The committee at the time agreed that if the funds were raised first, then the shed could go ahead. John successfully led the campaign and raised $75,000, he also project managed the build. This Cart Shed will be a huge asset for the Club. Meg was the first woman to hold the role of President in the Club, and she was born to lead. Never afraid to put her hand up to help with anything. In recent years Meg has been our Tournament Convenor and during her time has helped raise more than $60,000. Meg is also John’s right-hand Jum and Meg Morten with man and is responsible for all the Elmwood Trading Co. the paperwork involved in their Volunteer of the Year Award many hours of fundraising. Meg they both recently won. also was heavily involved with the sub-committee that has recently updated our Constitution and Committee restructure, which is proving very successful. For a Club of our size, this fundraising is huge if we are wanting to move forward and improve our Club. Volunteers like John and Meg, who are so On Saturday, August 21st, Hororata Golf Club’s new cart shed was officially opened. “Thank you to the the major sponsors, local business and Club Members who have made this project possible,” commented Project Manager Jum Morten. dedicated and enthusiastic are a real plus for any Club. I have no qualms in nominating Team Morten for the Volunteer of The Year Award, they are both huge achievers, and we must remember they are also actively involved in other groups in our local community”.
