The Coleman brothers are believed to have been heavily involved with Lincoln Rugby, and so the Shield is named after them. Darfield Rugby Club was formed in 1904, and they originally played in the Malvern Sub Union
Competition along with other Malvern teams - Hororata, Springfield, Sheffield, Kirwee and Black Diamonds (Glentunnel). Those two teams were lined with extremely strong players such as Kerry Pauling, Tony Thorpe and Don Hayes to name just a few.
