All domestic cats in the Selwyn District over the age of four months will have to be microchipped and registered from July 1st, 2022. This requirement is part of the Keeping Animals, Poultry and Bees Bylaw, which the Selwyn District Council adopted last year. The bylaw aims to protect the public from nuisance and address public health and safety issues. The decision to include the cat microchipping requirement, was implemented following the strong support it received during public consultation. Cat owners are responsible for the one-off cost of microchipping and registration for the life of the cat with the approved microchip registry, the New Zealand Companion Animals Register (NZCAR). Microchipping can be done at any local vet. The registration with NZCAR is most commonly done for the owner by

their vet at the time of microchipping, or by SPCA/ Rescues at the time of adoption. “This doesn’t mean the Council will be going door to door checking cats. But it does mean that if you have a problem with cats, you can live capture them and take them to the vets,” commented Springfield local, Sean Ellis. “If the cat is microchipped, the owner can be contacted and the cat returned. If it is not microchipped, this means it has no owner, and it can be passed onto Cat Companions for rehoming. “This is not an anti-cat bylaw, this is the first step to identifying feral cats in urban areas and removing them, which in turn should reduce the cat population,” Sean concluded. For the month of July, NZCAR has teamed up with some Selwyn District vets to offer owners in Selwyn, with cats over one year old, free microchipping and registration (conditions apply)! Reach out to your local vet to see if they are participating and to learn more!

Why over one year?... The organisation appreciate that this is quite a change for people that have had their cat long time, so they want to help these people get their cat compliant. Participating Clinics are: • Rolleston Veterinary Services • Selwyn Veterinary Centre • Lincoln Village Vets • Prebbleton Veterinary Hospital • West Melton Vet Centre • Vetlife New Zealand • Selwyn Rakaia Veterinary Services Ltd.
