On Sunday, June 19th, sixty four senior ex-pupils of West Melton School attended a special luncheon at Langdales Winery to mark the School’s 150th anniversary. The event was organised by Maureen Frew (Read), Helen Reid (Thomson) and Joyce Wylie (LeComte). The venue couldn't have been more perfect, decorated with balloons in the school colours. There was a museum corner for photographs, of which there were many, dating back to the early 1900s. Also on display was the Headmaster's strap (stolen by a pupil - or so the story goes!), a hand-stitched white cooking apron, an embroidered cap and a pair of rompers, which the girls wore on Athletics Day (blue with gold braid down the side). Articles of sewing, old autograph books and a small exercise book with minutes written in pencil of our school council meetings in 1964,
completed the display. Everyone had a great catch up, which was evident by the noise in the room. Some pupils had not seen one another since they were twelve years old! John Overton, our oldest pupil, cut the birthday cake and Margaret McPherson (Moffatt), our oldest female pupil said Grace. Some current West Melton pupils, wearing their modern school uniforms, entertained us with songs, and two School Ambassadors (Fergus and Riley) spoke so clearly about what school is like today. One of the highlights of the many memories of old times shared by ex-pupils, was the story of the mouse-catching competition in 1964, won by Eddie Fairburn, who caught six mice - he never would disclose the type of cheese he used. Maureen Frew, Helen Reid and Joyce Wylie.
