LETTER FROM THE...

PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR/CHIEF EXECUTIVE

The 2022/23 season was a pivotal year for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. After a soft reopening with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the end of 2021/22, this season was our first full season under normal operation in our newly renovated and expanded space. As if a normal season isn’t already a large undertaking, this year we were still playing catch-up with rescheduled events. While we normally have about a dozen limited engagements, this year we had 16. And instead of one Broadway’s Best Benefit Concert, we had two. All of this kicked off with our much-anticipated Grand Reopening Celebration, featuring a 2-hour original production with over 600 attendees.

We also challenged ourselves to develop events to engage our audiences in new ways. With our new building, we made the promise that we would refocus on community and share our facilities with our neighbors who need a space to meet and gather. We hosted free tours to educate on how a producing theatre functions behind the scenes. We created the Maltz Master Class series, which are free seminars where our staff and artists share how they bring art to life on our stage.

Despite our best efforts, our season started slower than expected. Audiences were not returning to

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff have a lot to be proud of in the 2022/23 season. The team overcame numerous challenges and pulled off an extraordinary season.

I would like to thank our Vice Chair, Robin Smith, and the entire Maltz Jupiter Theatre Board of Directors for their hard work. With new facilities and new tools at our disposal, there is so much potential for the Theatre to grow over the next five years, ten years, and beyond. The Board and its committees are focused now on how the Theatre can capitalize on the positive momentum from this truly grand reopening.

Of course, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre owes its success to the patrons and community who support the arts. Thank you to those who stuck with us and to those who continue to believe in our mission.

in-person events as quickly as we anticipated—which was a trend felt by many theatres around the county. Thankfully, the season picked up some steam as we went along, ending with sold out performances and standing ovations for Lionel Bart’s Oliver!

We ended the season in a positive place, feeling optimistic about the next chapter of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Heading into the 2023/24 season, the work now begins to finish what we started and complete the final phases of our buildout plans. The Second Space and the Costume Shop are in line to be completed by 2024, and work is underway to fundraise for the completion of the Education Center to house the Goldner Conservatory.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is back and now there is nowhere to go but forwards!

I have had the extraordinary privilege of being the Chair of the Board for 4 years, and I could not be prouder to pass the torch to new Board leadership. I would like to extend my best wishes to Alceste Pappas and Phil Clark, the incoming Chair and Vice Chair of the Board in 2023.

IDEA: WHAT COMMUNITY MEANS

Inclusion. Diversity. Equity. Access. Four words that are an integral part of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s mission and values.

In the 2022/23 season, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff continued their efforts to explore new and better ways that we can serve our neighbors. Some of that work started from within. We made great strides in diversifying our full time staff and bringing in new talent for our design teams. We also returned to hosting annual trainings for staff and visiting artists to review our company policies and diversity initiatives.

Looking outward, we visited with community partners to introduce ourselves and listen to how we could better serve them. We have been able to share our spaces with our neighbors, who have used our theatre to host meetings, classes, and special events.

Throughout the season, we welcomed new audiences. Partnerships with local high schools and Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida brought in new families to tour the Theatre and see productions. Our Kids Korner Matinee Series offered age-appropriate programming for elementary school students, and we invited Title I schools to attend at no cost. This year for the first time, the Matinee Series included a sensoryinclusive magic show by Kevin Spencer.

At the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, we believe that the arts are a powerful platform for social change, and we take that responsibility very seriously. The performing arts are for everyone, and we are putting in the work to ensure that everyone who comes through our doors feels welcome and safe.

There is still work to be done and we are committed to the task ahead.

ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE: AN ARRAY OF TALENT

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2022/23 season was the first full season mounted on the Theatre’s new Broadway-scaled stage. We titled the season “Broadway Hits are Back!” as a signal to our audiences that the Maltz Jupiter Theatre had returned after construction delays and closure from COVID-19. The season was not without some growing pains as we learned to manage our new facility and rebuild our staff. No one felt these challenges more than our Production team. Our Production Center in West Palm Beach operated all season under-staffed, and our Costume Department worked out of Rehearsal Studio 2 until construction could be completed on the new second floor costume shop. Despite the speed bumps along the way, the team pulled off some of the best work ever seen on the Maltz Jupiter Theatre stage.

The 2022/23 season opened with the Broadway blockbuster Jersey Boys. This title was postponed from the 2021/22 season, where it was originally slated to be performed at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The production was re-worked to fit the Maltz Jupiter Theatre stage, and video designer Steven Royal made full use of the Theatre’s new LED video wall to complement Chen-Wei Liao’s set designs. The artistic team, under the leadership of Director/Choreographer Marcia Milgrom Dodge, embraced the challenge to take this well-known musical and make it uniquely “Maltz Jupiter Theatre.” Costume Designer Mika

Eubanks dressed our Four Seasons to the nines, opting for stunning green velvet jackets for “Oh What a Night!” instead of replicating the red jackets seen in many productions.

The demanding role of Frankie Valli was split between Josh Skurnik for evening performances, and Justin Anthony Long for matinees. Both performers and the entire cast were supported by a nine-piece orchestra, led by Eric Alsford. Jersey Boys opened the season with strong ticket sales and rave reviews from our audiences.

Our second production was A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the first Steven Sondheim-composed show produced at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Audiences roared with laughter each evening of this hysterical farce, led by Scott Cote’s outstanding performance as Pseudolus. With Jennifer Werner directing and Ariel Reid’s choreography, the female-led artistic team brought Sondheim’s fantastical farce alive. Adam Koch’s colorful set and artful costumes coordinated by Leslye Menshouse were a stunning sight. We were pleased to host students from Jupiter High School, The Benjamin School,

and Dreyfoos School of the Arts during the run of the show.

We rang in 2023 with our production of Sweet Charity, the beloved Neil Simon and Cy Coleman work about one woman’s mission to find her happily ever after. Like Jersey Boys, this production was also postponed from our 2021/22 season due to building construction delays and COVID safety concerns. However, the final product was certainly worth the wait! Director/Choreographer Marcos Santana set Charity Hope Valentine’s story in the context of East Harlem in the 1960s,

bringing a fun and vibrant Latin inspiration to the songs and settings. We were grateful to welcome back Music Director Andrew David Sotomayor and Lighting Designer Cory Pattak for this production. Jen Caprio’s costume designs dazzled, and we were proud to make most of the show’s costume pieces on site here at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

Our audiences traveled from Spanish Harlem to south Boston for David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People. Director Jerry Dixon helmed this evocative piece and led the talented ensemble cast, featuring Anne Bates, Tracee Beazer, Joe Cassidy, Sean William Davis, Delphi Harrington, and Kim Cozort Kay. Sydney Lynne’s set designs effortlessly moved between back alleys to Chestnut Hill mansions, complemented by Kirk Bookman’s expert lighting design and Jeremy “Matthew J.” Earhart’s sound design.

The 2022/23 season ended strong with the classic hit Lionel Bart’s Oliver! Two-time Tony Award®-winner Denis Jones directed and choreographed this beloved Charles Dickens classic, alongside associate choreographer Lizz

Picini, bringing together one of the largest youth ensembles in Maltz Jupiter Theatre history. Talented local students made up Fagin’s Gang and the Workhouse Boys, led by outstanding performance by 12-year old Benjamin Pajak as Oliver and Chase Bauer as The Artful Dodger. Chase Bauer is a former student of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Goldner Conservatory and landed the role through the Theatre’s First Step to Stardom youth auditions. Among the adult cast, Jon J. Peterson and Lindsey Corey delivered standout performances as Fagin and Nancy. Music Director Matthew Smedal directed a 12-piece orchestra—slightly larger than most Maltz Jupiter Theatre musicals—and wowed audiences from the overture to curtain call.

Our season would not have been successful without the strong stage management team behind it all: Suzanne Clement Jones, Randall Swinton, Jeremy J. Phillips, Suzanne Apicella, Jynelly Rosario, and Amy M. Bertacini.

VOLUNTEERS: THE SEASON OF WEARING MANY HATS

We were excited to welcome back our volunteers for our 2022/23 season. We had many new faces join the ranks to bring the number to 390 amazing members. After 15 years of dedicated service, Barbara Rafkin retired and we were pleased to honor her at the end-of-season Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. She will be missed and we wish her all the best in her new chapter. In October, the Theatre welcomed Nancy Cion as the new Volunteer Coordinator and she definitely hit the ground running.

In addition to the many front-of-house, operational and administrative responsibilities that our volunteers performed during each of our season productions, we had even more duties that required their help. Everyone was challenged to learn all the new amenities of our state-of-theart facility including new bartending software, an upgraded cocktail menu and touchless ticket scanning. Needless to say, additional training had to be implemented quickly. In addition, the Theatre launched a number of new outreach programs that without the support of our volunteers would not have been possible. Nancy had many new job positions for them to fill and the volunteer group stepped up to the challenge every single time. These events included: a Grand Reopening Celebration, Maltz Mondays

responsible for reaching our goal of 644 completed surveys.

Hats off to these amazing group of men and women who donate so much of their time to ensure our patrons have a flawless theatre experience when they visit our facility. Their selfless contributions and passion for the arts contributes to our success each season. They are an invaluable asset and we extend our sincere gratitude to each and every one of them for all shuttle service for our volunteers

DEVELOPMENT: THE ART OF FUN-RAISING

The Development Department experienced a very successful 2022/23 season. The team surpassed their annual fundraising goal by securing $2,063,595 in gifts and donations for the Theatre’s operating fund. Fundraising events also proved extremely successful and secured significant revenue for the season.

The Development event calendar was busier than usual in 2022/23 due to COVID-19 closures and construction delays deferring some 2021/22 events into the fall. One such delayed event was the much-anticipated Grand Reopening Celebration, held on November 7, 2022. 650 guests came out for their first look at our brand new, state-ofthe-art facilities. Believe Capital Campaign donors enjoyed a gourmet dinner catered by Sandy James Fine Food and Events in our Green Room Club Level Lounge, while 430 guests mingled under a beautiful outdoor tent and enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Attendees enjoyed an evening of song, dance, and entertainment on the Maltz Jupiter Theatre stage. With the help of a 20-piece orchestra and special guests, we paid tribute and thanks to everyone who made the new facility possible. The event grossed $615,700, surpassing income expectations by $315,000.

The second rescheduled event in the Development lineup was the Eighth Annual Broadway’s Best Benefit Concert, Believe: Stephanie J. Block. Unfortunately, bad luck would strike again. The concert was almost cancelled 36 hours before curtain due to Ms. Block contracting COVID-19. The Development team worked quickly under

extreme pressure to find a suitable replacement and were able to contract Christine Andreas, a two time Tony Award® nominee, just 18 hours before the fundraiser. Ms. Andreas along with her charming husband and music arranger, Martin Silvestri, wowed audiences with their performance.

The Ninth Annual Broadway’s Best Benefit Concert, I Got the Job: Songs from my Musical Past starring Lucie Arnaz was held in spring 2023. Lucie Arnaz’s performance was top notch and attendees raved about the show. Both benefit concerts brought in a total of $208,250 in sponsorships and $50,840 in ticket sales, but fell short of goal by $35,008.

Our largest fundraising event of the year, the annual gala, was held at the Pelican Club in Jupiter on February 4, 2023. This year’s gala,

It’s a Fine Life, transported guests to Victorian England to celebrate our season finale, Lionel Bart’s Oliver!. The gala honored Nancy Kyle, Chef Erik Pettersen of Evo Italian, Admirals Cove Foundation, and Honorary Chair Beth Neuhoff for their contributions to our community. Our 280 guests enjoyed a lively evening of food, dancing, carnival games, and surprise entertainment by members of the cast of Oliver! The gala was one of our most successful in recent years, raising $713,183.

Throughout the season, we also celebrated our Circle of Friends members with three exclusive events, all providing an inside look at how a professional theatre runs. Our first event, Fashion Forward, celebrated theatre costuming and included a panel discussion with our Costume Shop staff.

Our second event, Triple Threat Time Step, highlighted the rigors of the rehearsal process. Three talented teams of dancers were paired with three choreographers, who learned and performed entirely new dance routines in thirty minutes, all before the audience’s eyes.

Our last event, Open Book, was lesson in professional theatre auditions in the form of a cabaret performance. The cast of Oliver! showed audiences how an actor prepares for an audition with their “book” and how they can modify their performance on the spot to land a coveted role.

Closing out the year, the Development team launched a brand new event: Broadway Ballroom Battle. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre teamed up with Jupiter Fred Astaire to create a dance competition to benefit the Goldner Conservatory. 14 community-minded individuals were paired with a professional ballroom dance

instructor and competed in front of a live audience for the coveted People’s Choice Award. This event was budgeted to raise $51,860 and instead raised $222,134.

Our success is owed to all of our generous and dedicated supporters. Your contributions bring art to life on our stage and help educate the next generation of great artists. We could not continue to do this great work without your help.

THE GOLDNER CONSERVATORY: DROPPING DREAMS FOR ARTISTS

The Goldner Conservatory was in residence during the summer at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Programming included week-long camps and three week production camps for students grades K-12.

The Junior Conservatory performed Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in July 2022. Senior high school students served as projection, sound, and light operators as well as costume coordinators. Karen Nobel from Kids Need More Art collaborated with our campers to create props. This camp served 29 students in grades 3-7.

Our afterschool class schedule continued at the Juno Beach studios for the 2022/23 fiscal year. Classes offered in the disciplines included: musical theatre, acting for the stage and camera; as well as, BAK and Dreyfoos Audition Prep. Conservatory classes were held Monday through Friday and included ages three to seventy-three!

Our “Play in A Day” series for grades K-5 continued. Students join instructors at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre for one day when school is out, creating their own plays utilizing prop and costume pieces.

The Student Matinee production of The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System was attended by 1150 students grades K-5 in the spring of 2023. The magician, Kevin Spencer, devoted to serving those on the autism spectrum, rendered his services to 130 students. These productions were offered free of charge to students and teachers with the financial support of the Admirals Cove Foundation.

for grades 8-12. A total of 30 students participated in the show. They were led by theatre professionals in the areas of vocal, dance and stagecraft studies. Students assisted as stage managers, costume designers, lighting, and sound operators.

As production camps thrilled audiences on the main stage, additional camps were offered for children grades Pre-K through 5. Camps had varied themes such as “Castles and Caves,” “Broadway Dance Intensive”, and “Fairy Tales and Fables.” Students were encouraged to compose their own stories and interpretations of characters and settings. These camps welcomed 77 new faces to our Maltz Jupiter Theatre family.

We are growing, learning, and holding steadfast as we eagerly anticipate the reopening of our state-of-the-art Education Center facilities within the Theatre.

2022/23 FINANCIAL SUMMARY

Subscription and individual ticket sales for the Theatre’s 2022/2023 season started off at a slower pace than expected. As such, the Theatre had strong concerns regarding the anticipated financial results of operations as we were continuing to recover from the apprehensions surrounding the pandemic and the stigma of the construction delays that impacted our 2021/2022 season.

Although we were forced to face these uncertainties, the Theatre was able to fulfill the six limited

engagement performances and a benefit concert that were forced to be postponed from the 2021/2022 season. The Theatre’s Grand Reopening event, Gala and Conservatory benefit event were extremely successful. Although overall ticket sales fell short of our budgeted expectations, through efforts of the Board members and the continued generous support of our patrons, the Theatre was able to close the fiscal year with strong financial results.
