“Mary Cairncross turns 80!”
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a remnant rainforest and many of the trees you see today are hundreds of years old.
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is very lucky to have such a wonderful assett within their community. It came about by the forethought of Mary Thynne, whose maiden name was Cairncross.
The land was transferred to the Council through a Deed of Trust, with the aim of preserving the rainforest in perpetuity, and honouring their mother Mary Thynne.
It was not until after the forming of the Maleny Rotary Club in 1959 that a Rotary project in collaboration with the Landsborough Shire Council that the formation of the park as we know it today began.
It stands today as a memorial to her a passionate environmental credentials. The Cairncross family which included three sisters, Mary, Bessie and Mabel came to live in Maleny during the 1930’s.
On 11 December 1966, Elizabeth “Bessie” Thynne donated a further ve acres to the Landsborough Shire Council.
The Thynne family bought land in 1902, 790 acres which was part of the original Isaac Burgess selection, which included the now Mary Cairncross Park.
On Wednesday October 20th, 2021 between 12md and 2p.m. there will a celebratory picnic in the park to celebrate the 80th birthday of this precious gift.
In October 1941, 100 acres was transferred through a Deed of Trust to the then Landsborough Shire Council by Mary's three daughters Elizabeth, Mabel and Mary Thynne.
Qld Governor, Sir Henry Able Smith being led through the park by local 9 year old Murray Mears following the of cial opening of the park on December 12th, 1960.
The picnic will include a talk by local historian, Jeanette Nobes. Bring your own food and drink and picnic in style. Everyone is welcome - just turn up and enjoy the fun.
