Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Inc Newsletter “On the Right Track” Muscle on the Mountain, the very popular Maleny event that normally attracts upon to 900 gleaming cars to the Showgrounds, was to have been held this week-end. Like all big crowd events in these times, it had to be cancelled. Motor cars have been coming to Maleny for a long time – did you know the Landsborough – Maleny Road was an important track in the early 1900s? A few hardy souls braved the boggy track up the mountain in those early vehicles! Landsborough Shire Council’s quarry, built at Bald Knob in the 1920s, operated for some time supplying crushed metal for all the local roads. Metal was delivered down towards Landsborough in bins, running downhill on tracks.
The quarry was situated below 'Rowan House' on the present Landsborough-Maleny Road, just below the junction of Upper Mount Mellum Road. The bins were on wheels and workers filled them with rock and pushed them to the crusher. Bins of crushed rock were also pushed down the hill towards Landsborough to be used for road works. Construction started on a new road in 1926 when gravel was used to form the road and as the road improved, more automobiles began to appear in the district, flagging the booming tourism industry as we know it today. Here are a few photos of cars in days gone by.
Pictured in Maple Street on 23 November 1913, is this 1910 Cadillac V8, reputed to be the first car to visit Maleny. The Sallaway family's guest house 'Allawah', can be seen to the far right in the photo (which was demolished and replaced by 3 shops, located at 37 Maple Street.). Charlie Edlundh, son of the Caloundra lighthouse keeper, is the driver. Pictured L-R are the Sallaway boys Reg, Herb, and Fred and next to him could be Mrs Sallaway holding the youngest, at the time Milton.
