Fitness 101 By: Paul Bodenbach MA., FMR, FAFS, GPS Competitorsedge@msn.com (859) 802-2235 Allow me to take you on a walk through fitness history. First we must understand that fitness has been around in one form or another since the beginning of time. In it’s true form, fitness is oriented to the ability of one to physically function. Our modern day Olympics were initiated as “games”. Participants were primarily soldiers who trained for war. Soldiers trained for hundreds of years prior to the Olympics as a way to stay alive in battle. In addition, activities of daily living dictated one’s fitness. Can any of us truly imagine how hard the settlers of this country had to work each day just to scratch out a living. The industrial revolution changed all of that. Machines were invented to do work to make things easier and more efficient. There was a similar revolution in fitness during the 1970’s. Weight machines were invented and marketed as a better way to do strength and conditioning. Over time studies have shown that fitness machines are good for isolating muscles and increasing strength. However, they fall woefully short in training complex human movement. As a young Athletic Trainer I was part of a group of practitioners headed by Dr. Gary Gray who were preaching a better way to train the human body. Dr. Gray used the term “function” to describe our approach. Initially our teaching was looked upon as being radical and unsubstantiated. We were actually called a cult by those attempting to undermine our teaching. Since that time the Gray Institute has become a world leader in functional training for physical therapy, athletic training, fitness and conditioning. Modern day fitness is a compilation of many disciplines. Each is marketed to attract consumers. One of the newest is “Functional Fitness”and to young practitioners it might seem new and different. The cult believers have been practicing it for a long time and it’s truly been around since the beginning of time. It is however a great fitness practice if done correctly.
