Congratulations to Jody Johnson for winning the 2022 Founders Putting Championship!

Jody Johnson solidified his place in Maketewah history by adding his name to another championship board! Not only did he pull off winning the coveted Governor’s Cup, but he backed it up with another highly sought after championship - The Founders! Doctor Menk put up a fight, but Jody was just too much to handle... Congratulations to both!

Staff Spotlight Q & A Kiara Iker is Maketewah’s Sous Chef. We sat down with her and asked her some questions to get to know her better!

Where are you from? I’m from good old Cincinnati! Do you go to school? Yes, I go to Cincinnati State! I’ll be graduating in August with an Associates Degree of Applied Business and I’ll be a certified pastry chef. Do you have any pets? I have a corgi mix named Zena and a little kitty named Binx! What are your favorite things to do in the kitchen? Well I love to make breakfast pastries, they’re my one true love. My favorite task is definitely plating dishes and adding the finishing touches.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve experienced here at Maketewah? So two birds got into the building on Mother’s Day. We came in at 5am to prep and these birds started diving and sweeping at us from the ceiling. In a few hours we’d have 200 people coming in for brunch and we spent the first hour being attacked by birds. They trapped us in the dry stock! Chef ran into the walk in until they tired themselves out. We started working as usual and one landed on the back of Chef’s shirt and started swatting him! We chased them around with brooms until they wore themselves out again. I picked them up with a towel and took them outside!

An Article by Paul Bodenbach Ma., FAFS, FMR, GPS competitorsedge@msn.com (859)802-2235

Often I’m approached with questions about the newest fitness gimmick. Star athletes and celebrities are paid by companies to promote their products. It’s no different in fitness. The problem is, some companies prey on the emotions of the consumers in promising amazing results with little or no effort. Unfortunately, the only thing the consumer gets out of it is a chance to make the company selling the product rich! The Battle of the Bulge was introduced in the 1940’s for weight loss. It was a series of machines that rolled up and down parts of the body to reduce fat. It’s only effect was a light massage. It did nothing for weight loss. More recently the Sauna Suit proved to cause dehydration, muscle cramps, fainting and heat stress. Who can forget the Thigh Master endorsed by TV star Suzanne Sommers. The Shake Weight, Toning Shoes, Balance Bracelets and Vibration Belts are all gimmicks which made their creators a lot of money but none lived up to their marketing claims. Currently, there are claims that one can be hooked up to electric stimulation and it will build muscle without effort. Working in sports medicine for the last 35 years using electric stimulation regularly I can assure you that device doesn’t exist. Muscles become enhanced in direct relationship to the work they perform. To enhance muscular strength, endurance, speed, quickness one has to push the physical envelop in those areas to improve. There’s no device on the market that will do that for you. So, remember the age old adage, if it sounds too good to be true, it is! Be weary of celebrity endorsements and hype. Rely on methods that are time tested and proven. Be patient in your fitness pursuits. It takes time. However, if prescribed properly and progressed regularly the journey is a good one and faster than you might think. There’s another old adage that works well here. Hard work never hurt anybody.
