MUSIC AT GORDON
We are all so very fortunate to be here this weekend cele brating the universal language of Music. There is no greater challenge than collaborating with others in an effort to convey an emotional moment using only sound. There is also no greater reward than touching the hearts of others through music. I often tell my students that there would be a lot less war and conflict in the world if there were more music making. You cannot truly succeed in music without collaboration, empathy, compromise, accountability, hu mility, mindfulness, and many more of the attributes we commonly consider advantageous. Imagine if all of the leaders of nations came together once a month to make mu sic. That would be an educational moment to say the least. I will close with a quote from one of my high school music students, “The essence of your life all depends on music.”
As you enjoy the performances today and experience all that music brings to you, take a moment to consider the innumerable hours of practice, rehearsal, and planning on the parts of young musicians and educators. Behind ev ery musical ensemble performance is an individual effort, a high degree of group collaboration, and a willingness to take risks. Our musicians and educators have persevered through unprecedented events and continue to do so. They deserve our highest respect and support as we all strive to bring out standing music education experiences to all students.
