University of Maine, orono satUrday, May 18th, 2024
Dear Friends and Family,
On behalf of the Maine Music Educators Association, THANK YOU for joining us this weekend. Whether you are a musician, educator, chaperone, audience member or parent, you are part of an extraordinary event! A festival of this magnitude takes an enormous amount of work. Please join me in recognizing many of the people who make this weekend possible: Band Manager, Kyle Smith of Westbrook HS, Orchestra Manager, Ben David Richmond of John Bapst HS, SATB Chorus Manager, Ashley Albert of Brunswick HS, and SSAA Manager, Julia Edwards of RSU 16, Loren Fields of Lawrence HS, our Chaperone Coordinator and last but not least, our amazing All State Festival Chair, Kristen Thomas of Mt. Ararat HS.
As many of you know, this weekend of music making coincides with the MMEA Conference for music educators across the state. We provide two full days of professional development in all music content areas. A very special thank you to our Conference Chair, Bill Buzza of Edward Little HS for organizing such an amazing event. Thank you to our content area Vice Presidents for finding outstanding clinicians from Maine and across the country to share knowledge with our educators. PK-5 General Music VP: Caitlin Geishaker of MSAD11, 6-12 General Music VP: Kayla Peard of Noble HS, Band VP: Sarah Dow of Auburn Schools, Orchestra VP: Andria Bacon of RSU64, Chorus VP: Dr. Christian Giddings of Noble HS, Jazz VP: George Redman of Bangor HS, and Jazz Conference Assistant: Aaron Henry of Yarmouth HS. Thank you also to our Conference Registrar, Jon Simonoff of SAD32.
None of this week’s events are possible without the amazing hosts here at UMaine. Christopher G. White, Director of Symphonic Band and Athletic Bands, Dr. Rebecca DeWan, Libra Assistant Professor of Choral/General Music Education, Dr. Phil Edelman, Director of the School of Performing Arts, Theresa McMannus, Director of Events and Hospitality, Bobbi-Jo Cochrane, Assistant Director of Theater Operations, and Scott Stitham, Technical Director- Collins Center
MMEA Executive Committee members: Beth LaBrie- our outstanding Executive Director, Matthew Waite- President-Elect, Sandra Barry- Past President, and the MMEA Board members for endeavoring to bring the best experiences possible to students. Sarah Bailey, MMEA Treasurer of Greely HS for making sure that our checks are signed and delivered in a timely fashion. Hanna Flewelling, MMEA Publications Editor and Media Chair for our professional publications and our online messaging. Fred Grant, owner of WHOU.LIVE for providing the livestream feed and All State Concert recordings for those unable to attend in person.
The efforts of these colleagues are in addition to their daily work as music educators. Their vision for this event and dedication to your music students is unmatched.
We are so very fortunate to be here this weekend to hear these amazing students. There is no greater reward than collaborating with others to convey emotional expression through music. Equally important is the fact that, in spite of our many differences, music brings us together and celebrates all that we have in common, our humanity. The transformative power of music is beyond measure. I will close with a quote from one of my high school music students, “Music helped me through one of the hardest times of my life in my junior year. If not for playing music and the lessons I had, things would’ve been a lot different for me.”
As you enjoy the performances today and experience all that music brings to you, take a moment to consider the innumerable hours of practice, rehearsal, and planning on the parts of young musicians and educators. Behind every musical ensemble performance is an individual effort, a high degree of group collaboration, and a willingness to take risks. Our musicians and educators have persevered through unprecedented events and continue to do so. They deserve our highest respect and support as we all strive to bring outstanding music education experiences to all students.
Thank you for being part of this event!
Sincerely,
J.

The 12-step Conversational Solfege curriculum is a unique pedagogical approach for teaching music literacy to 2nd through 8th grade students. With this approach, music literacy starts with great literature and an “ear-before-eye” philosophy that correlates with the Core National Standards for Music Education. Great songs are broken down into their basic components and then reassembled so students can apply greater musical understanding.

Mindset, Mindfulness, and Leadership in Music Education and Beyond
Just as a conductor’s preparatory “upbeat” gesture at the beginning of a performance influences the way an ensemble plays, we too get to choose our “upbeat”—our thoughts and attitudes—at the start of each day, at the beginning of each class, and in our interactions with students and colleagues.
Matthew Arau
With this clever premise at its core, Upbeat! presents a winning combination of mindset and mindfulness strategies as well as leadership principles that will motivate, inspire, and transform not only your internal world but the culture of your music program.

Jamie’s leadership has guided the Montgomery Symphony through a period of remarkable artistic growth, captivating audiences with dynamic performances and innovative programming. With a focus on contemporary American music, Jamie has expanded the orchestra’s repertoire to encompass a wide range, including beloved standard works and compositions by emerging and underrepresented composers. In the upcoming 2023-2024 season, the MSO will present regional, national, and world premieres, and will collaborate with acclaimed soloists such as pianist Jeffrey Biegel as part of a national initiative commemorating the centenary of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Jamie’s dedication to nurturing a thriving music culture in Montgomery is also evident in the orchestra’s engaging pops series, featuring exhilarating film performances such as Jurassic Park in Concert and Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert. Jamie’s commitment to inspiring young audiences is exemplified through his annual performances of the Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute’s Link Up series, which are set to make a significant impact on a record number of students across Montgomery and central Alabama. In previous seasons, Jamie has honed his skills through participation in international conducting masterclasses and competitions. He has taken part in programs such as the Lucerne Festival Masterclass with Bernard Haitink, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music with Cristian Măcelaru, and masterclasses with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of Marin Alsop. Jamie’s talent and abilities have been showcased through his advancement to the final rounds of the Gregorz Fitelberg and Besançon conducting competitions, where he led the Filharmonia Śląska and L’Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche-Comté. Additionally, Jamie has gained valuable experience as an assistant/cover conductor, working with orchestras including the Fort Worth Symphony and the Portland Symphony. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Artistic Excellence Fellowship from Indiana University, the Peabody Career Development Grant from Johns Hopkins University, and the Thelma A. Robinson Award presented by the International Conductors Guild and the National Federation of Music Clubs. An advocate of music education, Jamie works frequently with music students in public schools throughout the southeast region, and with the MSO’s Montgomery Music Project and Montgomery Youth Orchestra.
Jamie holds degrees in conducting from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and the Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory, where he had the privilege of being mentored by esteemed conductors such as Marin Alsop, David Effron, Arthur Fagen, John Ratledge, and Joseph Young.

Ms. Werlin’s current position is Music Department Chair and Vocal Music Director at Longmeadow High School. Under her direction, LHS choirs have earned awards at state choral festivals as well as the 2011 American Prize for Choral Performance. They have received invitations to perform at state and regional music education conferences, and they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Providence, Washington DC, and New Hampshire, as well as Italy, England, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Austria. Performances by special invitation at the State House in Boston have included a 2015 signing ceremony recognizing the 25th anniversary of Massachusetts’ friendship with Hokkaido, Japan, and the 2016 convening of the Massachusetts Electoral College.
Kayla has played an active role in the Massachusetts chapters of both NAfME and ACDA. She is a past president of Massachusetts ACDA, and past Western District Chair of MMEA. She has
served as a guest conductor in all five districts in Massachusetts, as well as at the Cape & Islands and Quabbin Festivals, and has conducted festival choirs in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Connecticut as well.
In 2018 MMEA honored Kayla with its Lowell Mason Award, and in 2023 she received the Distinguished Service Award. In 2019, the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors’ Association inducted Kayla into its Hall of Fame. In 2016 she was one of three conductors from the US selected as a fellow in the C21C (Conducting for the 21st Century) Symposium at the Eric Ericson International Choral Centre in Stockholm, Sweden.
Kayla values the experience of mentoring fellow conductors. She has supervised many student teachers who are currently in the profession, and she is tremendously proud of Longmeadow High School graduates who are now music educators. She also volunteers as a mentor through the ACDA national mentoring program.
Married to conductor E. Wayne Abercrombie, Kayla is step-mother of six, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 10. In her spare time, favorite hobbies are learning languages, reading, cooking for friends and trying (usually unsuccessfully) to send 5.11’s at the rock wall.
