Winter into Spring

Welcome to our 2020 Winter into Spring semester. We are happy to offer our wonderful programs, some familiar, some brand new! We have great exercise programs, and our creative and stimulating activities should motivate you to register quickly! Please sign up as soon as possible. Many of our courses have limits on numbers, and enrollment will be strictly on a first-come first-served basis.

Registration closes on Monday, February 10, 2020. Scholarships: We ask for your continued support of our scholarship fund. Through your contributions we are able to offer students opportunities that would otherwise be unaffordable. Thank you for your chesed. Please keep it up! The M.S.A.P. extends thanks and heartfelt appreciation to all the staff who teach and make it the wonderful program that it is. General Information REGISTRATION is on a first-come, first-served basis. To enroll your child in one or more courses, complete the enclosed registration form and return it to your division office, attention Deborah Mehl. You can also email your registration to dmehl@maimonides.org, or register online (for details see the Registration Form). Your M.S.A.P./After-School Program payment will be debited through your Smart Tuition account. To access your Smart Tuition account at any time, go online to www.parent.smarttuition.com and enter your login information. The number at the call center is 1-888-868-8828. Please do not send checks.

Registration closes on Monday, February 10, 2020. TUITION PAYMENTS ARE REFUNDABLE before the beginning of the second class (less the cost of the first class). No refund is available to students attending more than one session of a class. PICKUP: All parents are responsible for picking up their children PROMPTLY at the end of each class. Instructors are not responsible for your child once class has ended. Students who are unable to be picked up immediately after class MUST be enrolled in the MateS program.

Monday COMIC BOOK ART Mr. Eli Portman In this class we will learn how stories are told in comics, as well as learning this unique art style and making our own comic books. We will learn how to tell stories and experiment with new and out-of-the box ways of drawing! Superheroes, villains, knights, princesses, and more! Grades 3-8; Session 2 only | Room L15 Cost: $170 plus $25 supply fee

CULINARY DELIGHTS HaMorah Irene Blechner Students will have fun measuring, mixing, creating, baking, cooking, and enjoying each other’s company. It’s fun, wholesome, and happy. In the process, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are developed. We practice reading and arithmetic. Best of all, cooking helps instill confidence as students see, taste, and share the results of their efforts. Priority will be given to 2nd Grade students. We do not allow students who took this course last semester to re-register. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Room L9 Cost: $225 plus $40 supply fee | Class limited to 10

THE GARDEN CLUB Mrs. Debbie Bassi Nature is good for a child’s emotional and physical well-being. It can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and increase physically active time. By exploring different areas of nature, students will explore ways to help make the world a better place for both people and animals. They will create art, using nature as inspiration, and will get their hands dirty, planting a garden both inside and outside. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Room L7 Cost : $165 plus $25 supply fee


Monday HOCKEY Ms. Shannon Murphy Students in Grades 3-8 will have an opportunity to enjoy a real workout after school. Students will work on individual skill development as well as how to work together on a team. Come and join us for a great workout and lots of fun! Grades 3-8; Session 2 only | Fox Gym Cost: $225 | Mouth guards are required.

KARATE Helix Martial Arts Helix Martial Arts School teaches karate, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, kung fu, aikida, and other martial arts. The class at Maimonides will focus on karate; other martial arts steps, e.g. jumping, spinning, and kicking, will be seamlessly woven into the course. The importance of focus, self-discipline, and respect will be taught. Teamwork will also be developed. Grades K-8; Sessions 1 & 2 | Fox Gym Cost: $260

Tuesday BASKETBALL FOR GIRLS Ms. Shannon Murphy Students taking this class will be given the opportunity to extend their basketball skills and team cooperation. Come and have a great hour of exercise and fun while honing skills such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. Grades 3-8; Session 2 only | Fox Gym Cost: $180


Tuesday ELECTRONICS AND 3D MODELING Makers Workshop Technology and design intersect in this exciting hands-on workshop as students learn techniques for turning their ideas into objects. Class will start with the creation of a 3D model of a flashlight. Using basic soldering techniques, students will then wire their projects with a simple circuit including a light, a switch, and a battery. Once the basics have been covered, students will have the chance to design and create their own acrylic fiberoptic nightlight from scratch. Grades 3-8; Session 2 only | Room L1 Cost: $280 (includes all materials)

MISHMAR HaMorah Kaylee Frager Torah learning for its own sake (lishma) is extremely important in our tradition. We are delighted to bring you this enrichment. Children will explore different Jewish concepts and ideals through story, song, art projects, and play. Tuesday SCIENCE AFTER SCHOOL Ms. Alison Gutermann Calling all scientists! Students will participate in weekly handson gooey, messy, fizzing, and exploding science experiments. Each week children will put on their scientific thinking caps to create interactive, fun, and most of all messy science activities, including slime, fizzing explosions, and more. Children will learn the importance of measuring, following directions, and hypothesizing during this course. VOLLEYBALL Mrs. Debbie Bassi Come play some volleyball! We’ll keep the kids moving while working on building skills and good sportsmanship. We will learn basic volleyball skills and the rules of the game. Wednesday ARTS & CRAFTS Mrs. Debbie Bassi Calling all young artists! Put those creative muscles to work! We will learn new skills and create a new craft to bring home each week. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Room L7 Cost: $150 plus $25 supply fee

CHESS Mr. Eduard Duchovny Learn one of the oldest and greatest games. Chess helps children develop discipline and analytical and strategic thinking skills, promoting a higher rate of cognitive development. Chess has been proven to improve logical-mathematical and visual-spatial intelligence, self-control, and patience. Grades K-8; Sessions 1 & 2 | Room L14 Cost : $220

CLUB RUNNERS Ms. Shannon Murphy Join Ms. Murphy on a fun run around the Brookline Reservoir! Running Club will include pre and post stretching, as well as covering proper running techniques for kids. No prior experience of running is required. All abilities are welcome! Grades 3-8; Session 2 only | Meet at the Fox Gym Cost: $150


Wednesday DIGITAL GAME DESIGN Tinker & Create This course introduces students to Unreal Engine, a game development platform that’s great for creating 2D and 3D games. Some of the most important skills acquired in the class are scene and character design, computer programming, story crafting and writing, a bit of physics and math, and, most importantly, imagination. With a basic knowledge of this platform, students can begin to think about how to create worlds for different platforms such as tablets, PCs, laptops, virtual reality, and beyond. These skills can easily be applied to other disciplines, like graphic design, architecture, physics, math, fine arts, writing, computer programming, and engineering. We will be happy to equip your children with the skills needed to empower their creativity! Grades 3-7; Session 2 only | Room L1 Cost: $250 | Minimum of 10 students needed to run.

FENCING Mr. Ray Cote Learn the fundamentals of modern foil fencing. This class combines fencing instruction with history, life skills, and sportsmanship. Experience the benefits of practice and precision and the value of honor and fair play while getting fit and having fun. Grades 3-7; Session 2 only | Room L7 Cost: $175 plus $25 equipment rental


Thursday ALL SPORTS Coach Adam Sports Students will participate in soccer, kickball, dodgeball, wiffleball, baseball, touch football, and lots more! Students will learn important teamplaying skills, as well as cooperation and respect, as they learn to play several games. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Fox Gym Cost: $160

CODING CLUB/SCRATCH JR. Mrs. Debbie Bassi Come have fun learning computer programming skills through interactive and exciting projects. We’ll explore Scratch Jr. and other fun coding activities. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Room L7 Cost: $165 plus $10 supply fee

JUNE’S BROADWAY KIDS Mrs. June Gerrie Come and join June’s Broadway Kids on all of our thrilling adventures as we sing, dance, and act our way through numerous journeys. Every girl and boy will have a starring role in our final performance at the semester’s end. Classes will include concentration, memory, eye contact, improvisation, public speaking, singing, dancing, and acting games. Grades K-2; Session 1 only | Room L10 Cost: $175


Thursday MISHMAR Rabbi Yaakov Beker Rabbi Dovid Reisman Torah learning for its own sake (lishma) is extremely important in our tradition. We are delighted to bring you this enrichment. Students will study aspects of halacha or portions of Mishna or Tanach. Come and join us for an hour of wonderful learning. Grades 3-7; Session 2 only | Room L16 Cost: $85

SEWING FOR GRADES 6-8 Mrs. Sharona Vedol Sewing is a fantastic way to develop your own personal style while also picking up some realworld math and engineering skills. This introductory course allows each student to build confidence and learn foundational skills by sewing a whimsical pillowcase before really diving in and designing his or her own perfect-fit half-circle skirt or pair of pants. For the last project, students can choose between a more complex jumper, a straight skirt, or a polo shirt. As an added bonus, all clothing made will be dress-code compliant! Grades 6-8; Session 2 only | Room L1 Cost: $175 plus $40 supply fee | Class limited to 5.


Private Lessons Students’ Smart Tuition accounts will be billed an activity fee of $25. BASS GUITAR, CLARINET, DRUMS, FLUTE, GUITAR, PIANO, SAXOPHONE, TROMBONE, TRUMPET, UKULELE Mr. Michael Carey, Maimonides School’s music teacher, offers lessons teaching instrumental music in both private and group settings. Mr. Carey teaches with a mix of ear training, improvisation, and humor, while tailoring lessons to his students on an individual basis. PIANO This course is designed for beginner students. It is the instructor’s belief that students should develop a love of piano while learning to play. VIOLIN Private lessons encouraging the mastery of violin are available. Mr. Amos Lawrence is an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who is devoted to making violin learning fun for his students. About the Faculty

MRS. DEBBIE BASSI (The Garden Club, Volleyball, Arts & Crafts, Scratch Junior/Coding) teaches Second Grade General Studies and Third Grade Limudei Kodesh at Maimonides. She grew up in Houston, Texas, and lived in Israel for eight years, spending two years in the Israeli army. She taught special education in Israel for four years. Debbie loves nature, grew up with many animals, and is a very keen gardener. She loves making crafts and plays a great game of volleyball. RABBI YAAKOV BEKER (Mishmar) is our Sixth Grade Limudei Kodesh teacher. He received Smicha from the Ner Israel Rabbinical College. HAMORAH IRENE BLECHNER (Culinary Delights), our Kindergarten Limudei Kodesh teacher, has taught kindergarten for 23 years. She apprenticed with a New York caterer. Morah Irene is a very talented cook and baker who teaches cooking and baking along with kitchen safety, measurement math, and tricks and shortcuts in the kitchen. Morah Irene has taught Culinary Delights for many years and fills the halls with sweet and wonderful aromas! MR. MICHAEL CAREY (Music Private Lessons) is our Music teacher. He has been teaching sax, flute, and clarinet to kids and adults for 16 years. He has taught music production and band in the Brookline Public Schools. He toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 2000 and has played in a variety of Broadway-style shows. Michael studied Jazz and Classical Saxophone at the University of North Texas and UMass Amherst. MR. RAYMOND COTE (Fencing) has studied historical and modern fencing for years. He has taught fencing to all ages for many years. MR. ADAM DiTULLIO/COACH ADAM SPORTS (All Sports) is a professional coach. He has a BA in sports management, concentrated in coaching. He has more than 5 years experience coaching children. He runs his own company.


About the Faculty

MR. EDUARD DUCHOVNY (Chess) is a FIDE Master of Chess, FIDE Trainer of Chess, and International Arbiter of Chess. He has been an instructor of junior players from beginners to senior candidates. He travels extensively, both in the USA and abroad, as a sought after Arbiter in world chess tournaments. Mr. Duchovny has represented the USA as an International Arbiter for the World Chess Olympiad all over the world. HAMORAH KAYLEE FRAGER (Mishmar) is our Fourth Grade Limudei Kodesh teacher. HaMorah Kaylee has extensive teaching experience, having taught Limudei Kodesh and Hebrew from first grade to college. MRS. JUNE GERRIE (June’s Broadway Kids, Piano) is an accomplished pianist, singer, actress, and dancer. She studied music theory at Brandeis. Mrs. Gerrie has taught piano for many years across several age groups MS. ALISON GUTERMANN (Science After School) is the Elementary School social worker at Maimonides School. She graduated from Trinity College with a degree in Political Science and holds a Master’s Degree in school-based social work from Columbia University. Ms. Ali loves all things that are messy, interactive, and fun. She has been doing hands-on science experiments since she was a child and has experience leading home and school-based science activities for children. HELIX MARTIAL ACADEMY (Karate) is a school in Newton that teaches Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu, Kenpo Karate, Aikido, Yoga, and Mixed Martial Arts. They run classes from school age to adult. MR. AMOS LAWRENCE (Violin) has a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from the New England Conservatory. He studied with Ivan Galamian, Itzhak Perlman’s teacher.


About the Faculty MAKERS WORKSHOP (Electronics and 3D Modeling) has been providing enriched three-dimensional art programming in Massachusetts for over ten years. Their programs aim to broaden the definition of what it means to be creative by incorporating a wide range of mediums in the classroom and integrating tools, equipment, and technology. MS. SHANNON MURPHY (Basketball, Hockey, Club Runners) is one of our Maimonides Physical Education teachers. Ms. Murphy graduated from Plymouth State University, majoring in Physical Education, with a minor in health. She is the youngest of four children, and the only girl. Ever since she was little she has played all sorts of sports. In high school and college she played softball. In her free time Ms. Murphy enjoys all kinds of sports and kayaking. MR. ELI PORTMAN (Comic Book Art) is a Maimo alumnus. He has a BA in Studio Art (Binghamton). His work hangs in cafes and galleries all over the Greater Boston area. He runs a storefront in Cambridge where he sells his framed drawings. RABBI DOVID REISMAN (Mishmar) is our Fifth Grade Limudei Kodesh teacher. He received Smicha from Hasmacha and Yoreh-Yoreh. TINKER AND CREATE (DiGital Game Design) is a group of accomplished educators and scholars committed to teaching students how to approach and apply what matters in science and technology now. Rather than instructing to the end-goal of the subject course, classes focus on the software, math, chemistry, physics, engineering, and design fostering children’s understanding of core academic subjects and developing their analytic skills. Their belief is that imagination and creativity require tools to develop problem-solving skills. MRS. SHARONA VEDOL (Sewing) is our Middle School Office Manager and makes almost all of her own clothes. She is an enthusiastic crafter and loves sharing what she’s learned.
