AND STRONGER. YOU—ALL OF YOU—

TO YOU.

Dear Maimonides Community, Maimonides accomplished the extraordinary last year. We propelled both the school and our educational program forward during the height of a pandemic. Maimonides navigated the rapidly changing conditions of COVID-19 while keeping the school in-person for nearly the entire year. It is impossible to overstate the size of that task or how well it was done. Our administration and staff developed and implemented protocols to keep our students, faculty and staff, and parents safe; our teachers invented new methods of teaching (concurrent instruction) using new technology and pedagogies; and our students showed resilience and concern for their families and community by doing what was asked of them to maintain their safety and that of others. Last year was so much more than just getting by. We made real progress in so many areas. • In area after area, teachers helped our students learn most of what they would have in a normal year. • Teachers across the school continued to explore new techniques in student-centered learning, including some new examples of project-based learning. • Early Childhood Center teachers worked on how to include a greater range of student expression in their lessons; the Elementary School began exploring a new studentcentered approach to behavior that continues into the current year; the Middle and Upper Schools started a new advisory program and planned to expand social/emotional learning; and the Upper School added a new group of electives to give students more choice in what they study. • All the elements of our strategic plan, including bringing our budget closer to balance, saw positive steps forward in 2020-21. The last academic year was not easy and the circumstances were ones we would never choose to repeat. But the story of Maimonides in 2020-21 was a bold one. It was about keeping our eyes on long-term goals, moving forward despite challenges, and laying a strong foundation for the successes to come.

Jacob Pinnolis, Interim CEO Ernest Mandel, Chair, Board of Directors

Dear Parents, Faculty, Alumni, and Supporters of Maimonides School, Nearly 85 years ago, a group of Boston Jewish leaders and dreamers, led by our founder, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik z"l, set out to embark on realizing a vision that would change the Boston community and all of American Orthodoxy for generations to come: The founding of our school, Maimonides School. It was by no means a foregone conclusion at the time that young Jewish boys and girls, men and women, would enroll in a school that would produce graduates who were simultaneously elite Talmudic scholars and also more than qualified to attend any institution of higher education in this country, but Maimonides has done that each year since its founding, and continues to do just that. It was revolutionary at the time to think that Jews could be learned and passionate about their religion at the same time that they were prepared to join, contribute, and participate in general society at large. Maimonides provided the proof locally and the inspiration nationwide that such a vision could be brought to fruition. More than 80% of last year's alumni were admitted to one of their top college choices, while our students continue to be admitted to the most rigorous programs of study for their years in Israel. Our girls' Talmud program remains one of the top ten high school Gemara programs for girls worldwide. Our parents, students, and alumni continue to have a tremendous impact both locally and worldwide. Community leaders and volunteers recall how Maimonides School inspired them with the values of Zionism, citizenship, volunteerism, and kindness to build communities and strengthen Jewish life across the globe. In the pages of this annual report, you will read about the extraordinary year of learning that was the 5781 academic year - about the number of hours of in-person learning, the number of times our students davened in person together, the number of consecutive weeks we ensured the Torah was read. About the social/emotional growth of our Early Childhood Center and Elementary School students who benefited from in-person learning, and the mental health support from our teachers, learning specialists, and social workers across all divisions. As we look at the nuts and bolts and details of the past year, we should remember our founding vision, and the commitment and mission we always continue to serve. Be’Birkat HaTorah,

Rabbi Yaakov Jaffe, EdD

DURING A TIME OF

Uncertainty,

we are confident in who we are

As the world around us kept changing, our school persevered. Because we know who we are and what we represent. Because we have an enduring and cherished history and essential values which serve as a strong bedrock in times of uncertainty.

Our school’s rich history began with a commitment by the Rav, Rabbi Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik ‫זצ״ל‬, to Maimonides School, which he established in 1937. The Rav pioneered a Modern Orthodox school that dared to insist, among other things, that Jews could remain passionately dedicated to Torah, mitzvot, and their faith while also being fully engaged in modern society. Girls would receive the same education as boys, and the school would be fully committed to the future of Judaism in Medinat Yisrael. Our values continue to secure the stability of Maimonides School. These values include a fervent dedication to Torah, halachic Judaism, religious Zionism, Jewish literacy, and a deeprooted Jewish identity that serve as the foundation of our dual and integrated curriculum.

“Maimonides strives to be a beacon of normalcy in unusual times.” RABBI DR. YAAKOV JAFFE, DEAN OF JUDAIC STUDIES

DURING A TIME OF

great concern

we safeguarded the physical and emotional health of our students It started with physical safety. Through a partnership with Combined Jewish Philanthropies and other local Jewish day schools, there was a collaborative effort to work with a medical advisory board to guide our health and safety decisions. Top-notch medical professionals guided us every step of the way, enabling us to remain open without jeopardizing the health of our students, parents, or faculty.

Mitigating steps were taken, including mask wearing by everyone in the building. Students sat at a distance of 3-6 feet from each

system and placed hand sanitizer throughout the building. We also strongly encouraged eligible employees and students to vaccinate when vaccines became available in the spring. A revamped advisory and student dean program in the Middle and Upper School for the 2020-21 academic year, and a new Social-Emotional Learning and Hashkafa (SELAH) curriculum launched in 2021-22, helped us to further increase student support and strengthen our young students’ relationships with caring adults who can mentor and advise them. This helped our students to grow as human beings as well as learners. One of the other by-products of having in-person school on a consistent basis was the students’ spontaneous joy at being in school. When children were busy working in their classrooms, passing each other in the hallways, or just hanging out together during lunch, there was an atmosphere of excitement and joy. Both students and faculty were so happy to be in school!

Maimonides School was open for more than 160 days and 1,500 hours of in-person instruction last year.

DURING A TIME

when many schools around the world were falling behind,

While many students across the country lost ground due to not being in school,

Maimonides School and its inspiring students forged ahead

Maimonides students forged ahead. Our students continued to progress through their regular curriculum. As an institution, we persisted in following our strategic plan and reinforcing our student-centered culture.

Director Robin Meyerowitz and the ECC teachers successfully created an environment where the children continued to be social and interact. They spent a great deal of time outdoors, visiting the pond and the forest, and on the playground. They celebrated holidays, acted out the weekly parsha, and davened daily to

DURING AN

unprecedented time,

our teachers mobilized to create an entirely new way of teaching In the beginning it didn’t seem possible. How could you teach a class in which some students were onsite and some were remote, and you were tasked with educating all of them at the same time?

With grit and determination, Maimonides School’s teachers learned – as many teachers did nationwide – how to implement an entirely new way of teaching called concurrent instruction. For more than 160 days, our teachers rededicated themselves to their students, whether those students were onsite or remote. Our teachers learned new technology and ways to connect with students while wearing masks, and succeeded in achieving significant curricular goals. Our teachers demonstrated their student-centered focus by giving our students and their parents support and encouragement on every single day of this extraordinary year.

MAIMONIDES TEACHERS…. • Created a joyous and happy environment despite fears of COVID-19 • Successfully learned to use new technology • Modified their lessons and teaching methods to accommodate both in-person and remote learners • Shipped materials and supplies to remote learners • In the Early Childhood Center, took a course in social skills while wearing masks, and followed through on promoting social skills with masks on • Discussed and read books about coronaviruses from both a biological and psychological perspective

DURING A TIME OF

confusion,

our future is looking clear and bright

Maimonides School was fortunate to be able to stay open throughout the 2020-21 school year. The entire community — teachers, staff, parents, and students — worked together to ensure that the academic year was a success.

As we move forward from strength to strength, we will take the lessons learned last year and integrate them into our future. During a time of global instability, Maimonides School was a beacon of stability and inspiration as our students were able to attend class, daven together, celebrate the chagim, and learn new content and skills. We look forward to the future with excitement, passion, and strength.

Why Your Support Matters Gifts to our Annual Campaign are extremely meaningful every year, supporting our operating budget and providing flexible, unrestricted dollars that enable us to fulfill a wide range of needs. We are proud to recognize the following individuals and organizations for their contributions to the 2021 Annual Campaign, made between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.

WHY DID MAIMONIDES HAVE A $500K SURPLUS THIS YEAR? The surplus this year is an anomaly related to the proper accounting of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan. Although we received it in FY20, that loan was forgiven by the federal government in FY21, which allowed it to be recognized as revenue (increasing Other Income). While the PPP income increased our revenue only in FY21 (contributing to our surplus), the additional expenses associated with COVID-19 impacted the school in FY20 and FY21, and will continue into FY22.

AS OUR SAGES TEACH US ON THE FINAL PAGE OF MASECHET BRACHOT:

REBBI LEVI BAR CHIYA TAUGHT: ONE WHO CONCLUDES PRAYER AND THEN ENTERS THE STUDY HALL AND STUDIES TORAH WILL MERIT TO RECEIVE THE PRESENCE OF THE DIVINE, AS IT SAYS “THEY GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH, THEY WILL SEE G-D IN ZION.” DURING THE PAST YEAR, THE SIMPLE ACT OF ARRANGING THE DAILY PRAYERS AND LIMUDEI

KODESH AND GENERAL STUDIES CLASSES FOR ALL OUR STUDENTS TOOK A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF COLLECTIVE STRENGTH. BUT WE ACCOMPLISHED AND EXCELLED AT IT DURING A TRULY EXTRAORDINARY YEAR.

The extraordinary story continues...
