Maimonides School Activities Program The After-School Program Fall 2021 into Winter

Welcome to the Fall 2021 into Winter semester! We are so happy to present our in-person semester, full of energy, creativity, and joy! We have a festival of wonderful activities for your children! Here are a few highlights: •

We are excited to offer All Sports for grades 3-7 for the first time! We are offering four different sports (soccer, tennis, baseball, hockey) in three-session blocks. Sign up for one, or for all!

We are offering Maimo Ninja Warrior as part of our Monday All Sports (Grades K-2) program.

Culinary Delights will be offered to Kindergarten through Grade 5.

We are happy to offer many of our beloved favorites (Basketball, Chess, Karate, Mishmar, Sewing) as well as many wonderful new selections. Check out Arts & Crafts, Batter Up, Coding, Let’s Garden Together, Hebrew Calligraphy, Kick Boxing, Picture Book Writing, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Science Program, Story Book STEM, and Yoga!

We have a few five-week mini-courses: Anatomy Academy, LEGO Engineering Concepts, LEGO Engineering 2: Machine Power, and STEAM Studio.

We are also offering a seven-week computer course, 2D Video Game Design, with each meeting being 1 1/2 hours in duration.

We are looking forward to a vibrant and marvelous semester! All activities will observe our key safety protocols. Masks must be properly worn at all times. Students must participate in weekly testing through the school’s Test and Stay program. All our faculty members are fully vaccinated. Hurry and register! Numbers are limited in many of our courses. Registration closes on MONDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2021. Activities begin the week of OCTOBER 18. Please note that our policy for Bus Recess billing has changed. Children in Grades K-2 who sign up for after-school activities will be billed only for Bus Recess periods that they attend. The After-School Program would like to give tremendous thanks to HaMorah Michal and Dr. Barry Bessler for sponsoring our Mishmar for Grades 4-6 program this year. All students in Grades 4-6 who would like to attend Mishmar may do so at no cost. This is in memory of their beloved father and grandfather, Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski z”l. Thank you, HaMorah and Dr. Bessler! We are very grateful. This Shemittah year is a particularly auspicious time to increase our Torah study, as many Rishonim say that the purpose of the Shemittah year was to take a break from work and have more time for Torah. The After-School Program extends many thanks and heartfelt appreciation to all our teachers who make it the wonderful program that it is. We also thank Mrs. Elka Tovah Davidoff and Mrs. Michele Snyder very much for all the help they give to make our marvelous brochure possible. Enjoy! Mondays ALL SPORTS, INCLUDING MAIMO NINJA WARRIOR! Ms. Shannon Murphy Come and join us! We will be adding our own version of American Ninja Warrior to our All Sports program, which includes soccer, kickball, dodgeball, touch football, and lots more! Students will learn important team-playing skills, as well as cooperation and respect, as they learn to play several games. Grades K-2: Session 1 only Gym MINIMUM 10 Cost: $205 ARTS & CRAFTS Ms. Kate Hickenlooper This after-school program will focus on Green Art! Green art can be a few different things. We will be focusing on appreciating and learning about our planet. We will begin by spending time in nature and creating art using natural materials such as sticks, leaves, grass, etc. There will also be time to create nature scenes from around the world. Lastly, we will be creating art from recycled materials from around our school and homes! Grades 3-7; Session 2 only Room L4 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $195 plus $15 supply fee BASKETBALL Ms. Shannon Murphy Students taking this class will be given the opportunity to extend their skills in basketball and team cooperation. Mondays CODING WITH KIDS for Grades K-2 HaMorah Dani Carrus We will be advancing young coders and engaging students in STEAM learning experiences. Students will get a chance to explore ScratchJr, code.org, KIBO robots, and more. We will be fostering students’ collaboration and 21st century learning skills. Grades K-2; Session 1 only Room L14 MINIMUM 5: MAXIMUM 10 Cost: $250 CULINARY DELIGHTS HaMorah Irene Blechner Students will have fun measuring, mixing, creating, baking, cooking, and enjoying each other’s company. It’s fun, wholesome, and happy. In the process, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are developed. We will practice reading and arithmetic. Best of all, cooking helps instill confidence as students see, taste, and share the results of their efforts. Grades 3-5 will be challenged by more complicated creations as they enjoy the ancient magic of cooking and baking together! Mondays STORY BOOK STEM for Grades 3-5 Ms. Katie Smith Great stories will come to life with fun hands-on experiments and engineering projects. Together we will measure, test, design, and tinker. We will create our own inventions and help some of our favorite characters design a solution! We will build cars and ramps, robots that move, boats that float, fun fizzy creations, and much more! Grades 3-5; Session 2 only Room L1 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $205 + $15 supply fee YOGA Pretzel Kids So what exactly is Pretzel Kids®? To kids we’re fun, fun, fun! To parents, we are the answer to helping your children stay physically fit and deal more effectively with pressure. We’re all that and more! Our proven curriculum and amazingly fun yoga program incorporate poses, imaginative games, and relaxation techniques. All told, kids laugh, learn, exercise, breathe, and have a blast. The Anatomy Academy is now in session. We’ll explore the human body’s fascinating system of cells, tissues, and organs. Create a model of blood or skin and tour the digestive system. Build a working representation of the lungs and make a creepy cool model of the eye. You’ll learn that you are smarter than you think when we learn all about the brain and how it works. Meets January 11, 18, 25; February 1, 15 Grades K-2; Session 1 only Room L14 MINIMUM 6 Cost: $150 KARATE Helix Martial Academy Come and learn a Martial Art! This program teaches students the importance of focus, self-discipline, and respect. There is a focus on techniques of self-defense. Each class will teach new punches, kicks and blocks. Tuesdays LEGO ENGINEERING CONCEPTS Wicked Cool for Kids In LEGO Engineering Concepts we investigate simple machines including gears, pulleys, cams, inclined planes, and ratchets. Challenging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) based projects include a measuring car, a fishing rod, and a balance. Throughout the building process students will learn about force and motion, gear ratios, and friction. Turn a hammer into a dancing clown and work with your partner to create the best street sweeper! Meets October 19, 26; November 9, 16, 23 Grades 3-6; Session 2 only Room L14 MINIMUM 6 Cost: $150 LEGO ENGINEERING 2: MACHINE POWER Wicked Cool for Kids Machine Power looks at the uses of energy to power machines. We’ll use wind power, mechanical energy, and chemical energy to propel our drag racers, dogbots, and land yachts. Find out which leg design will help your bugbot win the race. Determine what gear combo will let your car pull the heaviest object. Test wheel sizes to see which one can help get a power car up a steep hill the fastest! Meets January 11, 18, 25; February 1, 15 Grades 3-6; Session 2 only Room L14 MINIMUM 6 Cost: $150 RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS Boston Rhythmic Rhythmic Gymnastics is an Olympic sport combining dance, gymnastics, and circus skills in routines set to music. (Israel won a gold medal in Rhythmic Gymnastics at the Olympics this year!) Gymnasts demonstrate amazing flexibility and perform acrobatic skills while handling small apparatus such as a hoop, ribbon, ball, clubs, and ropes. Grades K-7 Gym MINIMUM 10 Cost: $275 SEWING Mrs. Sharona Vedol Sewing is a fantastic way to develop your own personal style while also picking up some real-world math and engineering skills. This introductory course allows each student to build confidence and learn foundational skills by sewing a whimsical pillowcase before really diving in and designing their own perfect-fit half-circle skirt or pair of pants. For the last project, students can choose between a more complex jumper, a straight skirt, or a polo shirt. As an added bonus, all clothing made will be dress-code compliant! Grades 5-7; Session 2 only Room L1 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $200 plus $45 supply fee STEAM STUDIO Wicked Cool for Kids Join the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) movement, where science and art meet! Engineer and design awesome projects while learning science and math concepts. Get messy with colors and chemicals, and create cool rainbow slime, density tubes, and shimmering salt crystals. Tuesdays 2D VIDEO GAME DESIGN Empow Studios Does your child love video games? In this class, we will channel that passion by teaching them to build their own! Together with likeminded students, they will build simple video games step-by-step, experimenting with specific tasks and movements and sharing gameplay with their peers, while learning important STEM concepts of design, problem-solving, and trial/error. They will learn to use the accessible game design program Flowlab (no coding required), a platform used by many professional game designers to prototype new builds. All games will be stored online so students can access them after the course. Tech Requirements: Windows, Mac, or Chromebook computer. Over the course of 12 sessions, we will enjoy everything from painting to self-guided abstract art to projects that revolve around an upcoming holiday, and everything in between! The goal is for children to express themselves artistically in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Grades K-2; Session 1 only Room L8 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $195 + $15 supply HEBREW CALLIGRAPHY Ms. Rebecca Jacobs (HaMorah Rivka) Join us for a course on Hebrew calligraphy. Wednesdays KICKBOXING Mrs. Zippy Portman Do you like to exercise, and build strength and muscle for your legs and arms? Then join this fun, fast-paced class that combines martial arts techniques with a high-energy workout using popular music.You will build stamina and improve coordination and flexibility. Grades 3-7; Session 2 only Room L9 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $205 PICTURE BOOK WRITING Mrs. Deborah Furchtgott Learn to be both author and illustrator of your own picture book! This program will cover the entire process of writing and illustrating a picture book, from coming up with the characters and plot to writing and editing the text, laying out and illustrating the story, and coming up with a gorgeous cover design! Along the way we’ll read picture books together, both classics and contemporary work. Each creator in the group will end up with a beautiful book of their own making at the end of the program. Grades 3-7; Session 2 only Library MINIMUM 5 Cost: $180 + $15 supply fee SCIENCE PROGRAM Mrs. Abigail Winkie Our after-school science program will consist of hands-on experiments and lessons about earth science, ecosystems, astronomy, and much more! Children will have the opportunity to practice critical thinking and problem solving in groups, explore a variety of science topics, and engage in investigative learning. Thursdays BATTER UP Mr. Andrew Philips Get to know your favorite baseball players up close and personal. Join our obsessed instructor and explore the age-old hobby of baseball card collecting. Learn about the history of the game, player profiles, ballpark geography, team mascots, and more. You’ll get an intro to card-collecting terminology, online resources, and card maintenance and storage. We’ll play a variety of baseball card games, trade cards to assemble your own all-star team, and construct and decorate your own card storage box. You’ll receive a storage box and enough cards to get you started on your new hobby. Grades 3-7; Session 2 only Room L4 Cost: $180 plus $35 supply fee CHESS Mr. Devin Trevelyan Play one of the world’s oldest and greatest games! Chess is an ancient game of skill and intellect. It helps children develop discipline and analytical and strategic thinking skills, promoting a higher rate of cognitive development. Chess has been proven to improve logical-mathematical and visual-spatial intelligence, self-control, and patience. Grades K-7 Room L7 MINIMUM 5 Cost: $250 CODING WITH KIDS for Grades 3-5 Ms. Katie Smith Together we will explore computer programming and coding while developing problem-solving skills. Thursdays LET’S GARDEN TOGETHER Mr. Matt Durham, Newton Community Farm In this program we will cover all sorts of topics related to gardening! We will learn different ways to grow food no matter where we live, explore the life cycles of various organisms, and discover the parts of a plant and the ways we use different plants in our everyday lives. We will also learn about how our actions impact the world around us. We will think about how, through gardening, the choices we make can lead to a more sustainable future! Thursdays MISHMAR for Grades 4-6 Rabbi Yaakov Beker Torah learning for its own sake (lishma) is extremely important in our tradition. One of the pillars of Maimonides School is the centrality of Torah study, and the belief that we as Jews thirst for Torah out of love and passion and not only because it is required. Mishmar is a way your children can participate in extra Torah study, and a way you can model for them that Torah is a part of our lives above and beyond school. This Shemittah year is a particularly auspicious time to increase our Torah study, as many Rishonim say that the purpose of the Shemittah year was to take a break from work and have more time for Torah. These private music lessons are offered through the After-School Program. A registration fee of $25 per semester will be applied. Faculty Notes RABBI YAAKOV BEKER (Mishmar) is our Sixth Grade Limudei Kodesh teacher. He received Smicha from the Ner Israel Rabbinical College. MRS. IRENE BLECHNER (Culinary Delights, Mishmar) is our Kindergarten Limudei Kodesh teacher. She has taught at Maimo for many years. HaMorah Irene has built her culinary expertise by working with numerous caterers in her early years, as well as planning menus and cooking for her family of six. Her favorite hobbies include reading cookbooks for fun and working in her garden. BOSTON RHYTHMIC (Rhythmic Gymnastics) has been training thousands of children in the Boston area in the beautiful Olympic sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics since 2002. With multiple locations around Boston and programs for all ages and skill levels, Boston Rhythmic is the area’s largest rhythmic gymnastics program, with a mission to “empower children to reach beyond what they think is possible.” MS. DANI CARRUS (Coding with Kids) is our 1st Grade General Studies and Limudei Kodesh teacher. She is in her 8th year at Maimonides. Dani has a Master’s in Education and a certificate in early education robotics. She loves creativity and mint ice cream! MR. MATT DURHAM (Let’s Garden Together) has close to a decade of experience working with youth and gardens. He worked as a garden educator with Edible Schoolyard New Orleans before joining Newton Community Farm as Director of Education. Before that he completed a year of service with City Year New Orleans. Matt loves being outside and seeing the connections that develop through gardening and learning about the natural world. He has a B.A. in Writing, Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College and an M.A. in Environmental Education and Natural Science from Hamline University. Matt enjoys riding his bike, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, spending time in the kitchen, and exploring nature. EMPOW STUDIO (2D Video Game Design) brings technology, arts, and play together to help young learners build their creative talents. They use project-based STEM programs to help kids make fun things such as playable video games, digitally-animated movies, 3D prints of original designs or houses, and robots. Students learn to design, build, and code projects they are proud to share with family and friends, while learning the critical fundamentals of technology.

Faculty Notes MRS. DEBORAH FURCHTGOTT (Picture Book Writing) is a parent of a Grade 3 student here at Maimonides. She’s a children’s book reviewer and has seen all stages of picture book production, from reviewing manuscripts to perfecting author bios. MRS. JUNE GERRIE (Piano) is an accomplished pianist, singer, actress, and dancer. She studied music theory at Brandeis. Mrs. Gerrie has taught piano for many years across several age groups. MS. KATE HICKENLOOPER (Arts & Crafts for Grades 3-7) is our 4th Grade General Studies teacher. She is an outdoor enthusiast and loves hiking, camping, and paddle boarding. When she is indoors she loves to do Arts & Crafts. HELIX MARTIAL ACADEMY (Karate) is a school in Newton that teaches Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu, Kenpo Karate, Aikido, Yoga, and Mixed Martial Arts. They run classes from school age to adult. MS. REBECCA JACOBS (Hebrew Calligraphy) is our 3rd grade instructional assistant. She first began studying calligraphy as a tenth grader at Maimonides School. Over the years she has undertaken many calligraphy projects in both Hebrew and English, from greeting cards to ketubot. MR. AMOS LAWRENCE (Violin) has a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from the New England Conservatory. He studied with Ivan Galamian, Itzhak Perlman’s teacher. MRS. TATIANA LEPE (Arts & Crafts) is our Kindergarten General Studies teacher. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Early Childhood. She has taught ages ranging from infancy to first grade. Morah Tatiana served as Assistant Principal for four years at her previous school. The call of the classroom was too strong, and she is overjoyed to be back in the classroom here at Maimo. In her free time she loves spending time with family and friends, reading, and crafting! MR. Faculty Notes MS. SHANNON MURPHY (All Sports, including Maimo Ninja Warrior!: Grades K-2, Basketball) is one of our Maimonides Physical Education teachers. Ms. Murphy graduated from Plymouth State University, majoring in Physical Education with a minor in health. She is the youngest of four children, and the only girl. Ever since she was little she has played all sorts of sports. In high school and college she played softball. In her free time Ms. Murphy enjoys all kinds of sports and kayaking. MR. ANDREW PHILLIPS (Batter Up) is a Major League baseball fanatic. He has collected baseball cards for over 35 years and has recently realized what an important role baseball cards can play as an alternative to screens. By day Andrew is a real estate fund manager. He looks forward to sharing his passion for baseball cards. MRS. ZIPPY PORTMAN (Kickboxing) is our beloved 5th Grade General Studies teacher. She is beginning her 30th year of teaching at Maimo. She loves kickboxing! PRETZEL KIDS (Yoga K-7) is a yoga studio which offers curriculum-based, structured, engaging, playful, and fun yoga classes created by school teachers. Kids learn important yoga and mindfulness skills that they can carry through their lives. All teachers are certified in the Pretzel Kids method. MS. KATIE SMITH (Story Book STEM, Coding with Kids), our much beloved former science teacher, taught Elementary and Middle School science at Maimonides for 11 years before taking a break in 2019. Her love for science couldn’t keep her away, and she’s back to teach STEM in our after-school program. We are so happy to welcome her back! MR. DEVON TREVELYAN (Chess) is the owner of Knight Moves Cafe, a board game cafe in Brookline. Devon has been playing chess since he could walk. He competed nationally while in grade school and has been teaching chess for the past several years. Devon believes that the game of chess can strengthen core skills in planning ahead and give structure to young minds. MRS. SHARONA VEDOL (Sewing) is our Middle School Administrative Assistant and makes almost all of her own clothes. She is an enthusiastic crafter and loves sharing what she’s learned.

Faculty Notes WICKED COOL FOR KIDS (Anatomy Academy, LEGO Engineering Concepts, LEGO Engineering 2: Machine Power, STEAM Studio) is a small, local, womanowned business which has been providing customized enrichment programs for kids in grades K-5 for over ten years. According to the program, “We offer complete hands-on STEAM-based programs that extend learning beyond the school day and beyond the school year. Our programs challenge kids to investigate their world through science, art, and technology. We base our programs on three fundamental principles: learning, fun, and safety. Our curriculum is structured around an experiential environment aligned to national educational standards where we engage kids in a range of challenging activities.” MRS. ABIGAIL WINKIE (Science Program) is our Elementary Science Teacher. She recently moved to Boston from Pittsburgh, where she obtained her BA in Early Childhood Education at Point Park University. In Pittsburgh she interned in multiple school districts, gaining exposure to teaching methods centered on hands-on learning, such as Makerspace. MR. HAIM ZION (All Sports K-2, All Sports 3-7: Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, Hockey) is one of our Maimonides Physical Education teachers. Mr. Zion has taught sports for more than 20 years. He coached the tennis National Championships in Israel. Mr. Zion likes to run, do yoga, and work out at the gym.
