Our mission is to produce religiously observant, educated Jews who will remain faithful to religious beliefs, values, and practices as they take their place as contributing members of general society. Photos from this publication were taken both prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OCTOBER 2020/CHESHVAN 5781

Dear Maimonides Community, What a school year it was in 2019-20! It started with a building consolidation and ended with a pandemic. In between we forged new pathways toward student-centered teaching and learning, cultural cohesion, curricular elevation, and financial balance. It is hard to think back to what life was like before mid-March. But whether before or after the start of the pandemic, one theme rang true: It was a truly unprecedented year. Despite all of the difficulties and challenges the pandemic presented last spring to our school and community, it also showed what our school and community do best:

• Rise up to challenges. Together we persevered and adapted. • Our extraordinary teachers and staff showed students that, despite the physical distance, they were connected together and to each other in so many ways. • Our outstanding students showed us the power of positivity by chronicling their humorous observations on the new normal in special publications meant to uplift their peers’ moods. • Our supportive parent community leaned on each other through virtual camaraderie and inspired milestone celebrations for their family and friends. • Our broader Jewish day school community came together through collaborative efforts to maintain a shared path through uncharted territory. This year’s Annual Report highlights the unprecedented nature of our extraordinary year together as we found a path forward amid much change. You will read about our ongoing commitment to the strategic aims of our multi-year Plan for Sustainable Excellence, including advancements in teaching and learning, culture, curriculum, and financial sustainability. You will read about the ways in which we adapted to the challenge of the pandemic then and now. You will see the people who make the school the extraordinary place that it is – our faculty and staff, students, parents, and loyal supporters and friends. Thank you deeply for your ongoing engagement and support of our beloved school. The strength of our community is what sustains us, no matter what changes and challenges come our way. In this spirit, as we move forward in a new unprecedented year, we do so with the same courage, flexibility, humility, and humanity that our 2019-20 school year taught us and revealed in us. Respectfully,

Scott Mattoon, CEO

Ernest Mandel ’96, Chair, Board of Directors

Dear Parents, Faculty, Alumni, and Supporters of Maimonides School, Strong, visionary institutions are constantly engaged in an ongoing process of self-reflection and selfimprovement. Although the mission and vision of our school have remained constant over the course of more than 80 years, the way we actualize that vision and bring it to fruition is constantly being tweaked, improved, and augmented.

It is not an overstatement to say Maimonides has undertaken more shifts and improvements to our educational program in the last 12 months than we undertook in the previous 12 years. While our mission remains the same, unchanged from the vision of our founder Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt”l, we constantly search for new ways and new offerings to realize that vision. You will read in the upcoming pages about many of the improvements new to this year, from Judaic Studies to General Studies, from the sciences to the humanities, from Hebrew language to Talmud, and from religious commitment to social and emotional well-being and mental health. The practical challenges of reopening school during the current pandemic must not cause us to lose sight of the ways in which we are innovating and moving forward. We must remain focused on the future and how we can continue to prepare our students for lives as participating, observant Jewish adults in the 21st century. Our school believes passionately that Eretz Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael are at the core of Jewish identity, so it follows naturally that we would strengthen our Elementary School Hebrew language program and launch our new Middle School class in the history of Medinat Yisrael, the first of its kind in the country. Our school believes passionately in cultivating the general well-being and mental health of all our students, so it follows naturally that changes to our Upper School schedule allow students to learn the same content, skills, and topics as in previous years, while carrying a reduced load of fewer teachers and fewer distinct courses. Our school provides an all-encompassing religious atmosphere in which the observance of halacha in the totality of its ethical and ritual components is central, so our Upper School students, studying the laws of kashrut this year, have access to new Talmud course offerings, tailored to the interests and strengths of each specific student, including a special Matmidim option for students wishing to study extra Talmud. Our school is known worldwide for its belief that Torah study is enriched by our understanding of science, philosophy, literature, art, and music, which in turn is enhanced and enlightened by the teachings of Torah, so our rigorous science courses also investigate the relationship between science and Tanach, halacha, and Jewish thought. Our school is known nationwide for its commitment to educational excellence, so we welcome Jacob Pinnolis as our Chiel Educator-inResidence, raising our instructional excellence across all four divisions. Our school’s mission is to produce graduates who will become proud citizens, respected and contributing members of the Jewish and general communities, so we have launched eight new mini-courses for juniors and seniors, preparing them to apply the lessons of Judaism as they leave Maimonides and enter the world at large. For the first time in a decade, freshmen and sophomores study together multiple times a week, sparking friendships and social connections across grades and peer groups. The list of new innovations goes on: A transitional Kindergarten, new deans of students, integrated Jewish and secular history, computer science courses, and more. It would have been easy to press pause in a year marked on the one end by a campus consolidation and on the other by a worldwide pandemic, but we are committed to continuous improvement, and we open the new school year proud of the changes we have made, enabling us to offer even more choices to our students as they continue on their Maimonides educational journey. Be’birkat haTorah,

Rabbi Yaakov Jaffe, EdD

An

Unwavering Un

commitment to values Our Modern Orthodox philosophy guides our every decision. Every year we strive to make our values more evident and bring our actions into complete alignment with our promise of academic excellence. We continue to leverage our unparalleled dual integrated curriculum to further teach and model a fervent dedication to halacha, exemplify how Medinat Yisrael fulfills our nation’s spiritual destiny, and champion what Torah values and inspired Judaism look like in the 21st century.

“For every one of our values, I can point to its manifestation in the classroom.” RABBI DR. YAAKOV JAFFE, DEAN OF JUDAIC STUDIES

THE MAIMO WAY

• GIVE STUDENTS PROFOUND JEWISH LITERACY. We are the only school in the country that provides core Jewish literacy to all our students, male and female, who will have studied the entire Chumash and Navi by graduation, and will have acquired the basic skills for independent Talmud study. • REINFORCE THE INTERSECTION OF TORAH STUDY AND SCIENCE, history, philosophy, and literature and its practical application in daily life. Our curriculum seeks opportunities to approach secular study through a Jewish experiential lens, including our recent integration of classical history with the corresponding Jewish history of that period in the 9th grade, and numerous science extensions in 7th and 8th grade which consider the relationship of science and halacha.

• PROMOTE THE BLEND OF SPIRITUAL AND INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS that make up the lifelong patterns of Jewish living at the youngest ages. Maimonides’ Early Childhood Center and Elementary School reinforce spiritual connection as a part of daily life through davening, and acting out parsha in the ECC every week. • NURTURE AND DEVELOP OUR STUDENTS’ IDENTITY AS BOTH ZIONIST JEWS AND PROUD CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. History of Zionism and the State of Israel stresses our connection to Medinat Yisrael in a classroom setting, while our Upper School history programs consider the civic responsibilities of the Jewish people within the fabric of American society.

“Maimonides School has been a gift to our family. We have been so lucky at this difficult time to have our children cared for and educated by the best combination of mind, heart, and soul in an elementary school faculty and administration. Maimonides has risen to be best in class in Jewish education, and in specifically educating and caring for our children’s growth on all levels at this complex time.” SHERYL FOX ADLER, PARENT

A

Unique Solution Un

for a strong future

Consolidating two buildings into one continues to serve as an effective and streamlined approach to financial sustainability. The beginning of the 2019-20 school year marked the launch of our Plan for Sustainable Excellence, a five-year strategic plan that was the result of extensive deliberation and analysis of the state of our school by key stakeholders in every area.

The Challenge: Achieve and Maintain a Consistently Balanced Budget The plan called for a commitment to achieve and maintain a balanced budget to secure the long-term sustainability of the school. By building from a strong core where expenses are being right-sized for enrollment, the school will be able to grow into a position of strength.

The Solution: Consolidate Facilities and Lease the Brener Building Through extensive deliberation and input, the plan called for the consolidation of Kindergarten through Grade 12 onto Saval Campus, and leasing out the Brener Building, former home of the Elementary School and Early Childhood Center. The Early Childhood Center temporarily moved into the pre-school space at Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel in Newton. After a summer of moving, constructing, and re-organizing spaces to fit K-12, the 2019-20 school year began with all of the K-12 students on Saval Campus. By leveraging our strengths and assets, we took great strides in reducing our operating deficit on the march to a balanced budget.

“The consolidation from Brener to Saval was very smooth. Maimo did a great job helping each and every student feel comfortable in this new position. It was even exciting for Maimo students as we embarked on this new chapter in Maimo history. MIKEY NEUSNER, 12TH GRADE STUDENT

An

Unconditional Un

connection with students THE MAIMO WAY

Our student-centered approach incorporates three major objectives.

Maimonides is championing a student-centered culture, one that is consistent with our Modern Orthodox values, celebrates the individuality of each and every student, and creates an environment in which all our students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. To accomplish this, we have implemented structural changes to ensure every student is known, nurtured, and needed.

1. Ensure our academic leadership emphasizes and aligns with students’ needs We have adjusted the roles of our leaders to provide a highly-responsive structure for students in Grades 6-12. Our Middle and Upper School leadership team for student well-being now comprises a 6th grade dean, two overarching deans for grades 7-12, a social worker, a counselor, and advisors. By significantly reducing other responsibilities for our 7th-12th grade deans, they are now able to focus solely on our students and their needs. Benji Hain and Sarah Cheses are the new male and female deans for grades 7-12 who are able to take the time to get to know every student well and understand who they are, how they learn best, and what will help them succeed.

We introduced an advisory system in grades 7-12, where each advisor will have up to ten students they will be dedicated to supporting through regular one-on-one meetings with their students and with parents as needed. They will ensure students are getting the support they need on every level.

to think about what they need to know in order to solve a problem. Whatever methodology they employ to solve the problem, such as research, interviews with experts, or their own experience, they gain skills that are useful to manage real-life situations.

“We now have a leadership structure that elevates our commitment to students being known, needed, and nurtured.” SCOTT MATTOON, CEO

In Elementary School, there is a strong emphasis on helping students grow and shine in school. Some of the ways our student-centered culture is manifest include:

2. Update Our Curriculum and Schedule The continued evolution of the academic program puts our students at the center and enables them to deepen their learning and understanding. • Elementary School transitions to Migdalor program to improve Hebrew skill learning and proficiency. • In Middle School, the new 8th grade history course “History of Zionism and the State of Israel” is a first-inthe-country middle school course that deepens student connections with Israel. • In the Upper School, students now choose the Talmud course option that suits their interests and strengths from four options: Matmidim, Ivrit B’ivrit, standard, and skills-focused.

3. Create Student-Centered Classrooms and Teachers Our carefully constructed balance and integration of two curricula — Judaic studies and general studies — create a rewarding and elevated academic experience for our students. To position both our students and teachers for success, we have created opportunities for meaningful learning experiences through a student-centered learning philosophy in the classroom. Project-Based Learning — an inquiry-based student-centered learning approach in which students learn by actively engaging in real-time “handson, minds-on” activities — has increased its place in our curriculum. Project-based learning encourages students

• FOCUSING ON EACH CHILD as an individual. • TEACHERS MEET WITH STUDENTS one-on-one to support them with reading, math, and Ivrit. They bond with students over lunch, movie night, or even story time over Zoom. • OUR SOCIAL WORKER SPEAKS WITH STUDENTS to discuss their anxieties, distractibility, challenges of executive function, and friendships. • AN ANTI-BULLYING CURRICULUM has been put together for teachers to follow and implement in the classrooms.

“Maimonides values the voice of every single one of their students. This is displayed in the classroom through class discussions, which contain the many diverse opinions of the student body, as well as throughout the school as a whole, evident in the time the administration takes to listen and understand their students’ ideas, thoughts, and concerns.” EMILY GOLDBERG, 12TH GRADE

A commitment to

making the best of the

Un Unknown

A changing educational landscape emerged with distance learning. Our best-laid plans took a sudden detour in March 2020 when the pandemic hit. Along with every school in the country, we were faced with how to continue as a school. While some closed, we became a distance-learning institution overnight. While no one could have predicted what was to come, the leadership at Maimonides had begun preparing for this scenario weeks earlier, and when the inevitable occurred there was a plan in place that we executed at once. Our faculty and staff adapted immediately and resumed their teaching — but from a distance. “We believe that the most important moral obligation was to provide access to learning. It wasn’t easy for teachers or families, but we have a moral obligation for children to learn and grow, to have structure, stability, and interaction with their peers. That was of profound importance.” RABBI DR. YAAKOV JAFFE, DEAN OF JUDAIC STUDIES

Distance Learning Highlights: THE MAIMO WAY

• DRIVE-BY VISITS Recognizing the need for face-to-face interaction, our Early Childhood Center and Elementary School teachers and principals went to the home of every student on Lag B’Omer. • ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS Teachers held private meetings with parents over Zoom in order to better partner together in educating our students and maintain an open connection through uncertain times. • COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES Maimonides found resourceful and creative ways to come together as a community through virtual programming that included Bedtime Stories with principals one night a week, concerts, a presentation from a renowned Israeli mentalist, Maimo alum discussion panels, and a presentation by a Holocaust survivor from Italy on Yom Hashoah.

“Maimo crushed it with remote learning! From the minute we went into quarantine, Maimo totally stepped up and adapted to ‘school by Zoom.’ Everyone made our new normal feel totally normal. I am so grateful for all the extra hard work everyone put in to make sure we could keep going ‘to school’!” JONNO PARIS, 10TH GRADE STUDENT

“Towards the end of the summer, I worked at Maimo to help set up the school. The amount of work that was put into setting the school up in order to have the safest year possible was extraordinary! Even with all the COVID restrictions this year, Maimo has done a great job in making the school feel new and exciting. Every day brings a new challenge, and Maimo has done a great job in overcoming them.” MIKEY NEUSNER, 12TH GRADE STUDENT

A community that remains

Un Unified

A changing educational landscape emerged with distance learning. Nachmanides (Shemot 18:15) observes that our teachers provide both Torah study, and emotional support for individuals going through difficult times. From development of a strategic plan, to the summer of consolidation of Brener and Saval into one building, to the temporary relocation of the Early Childhood Center to Newton, to the support for our first Community Dinner that was put on pause by the pandemic, to the need for distance learning through the spring, the Maimonides community has been truly tested, and as only the Maimonides community can, it rose from strength to strength.

For the unsung heroes… THE MAIMO WAY

• who donated hours and hours to develop the Maimonides Plan for Sustainable Excellence • who supported the consolidation of our building by donating pro-bono design, architecture, and professional input • who spent weeks planning the first revival of the Community Celebration Dinner in March and setting up the venue on March 8 • who leapt on board during distance learning to make it work for our children

• who adapted with fierce dedication to making their virtual classrooms work so they could engage their students in all ways — showing them that they were not emotionally distanced, but merely physically distanced • who supported the fund for families affected by COVID-19

Thank you!

A commitment to vigilance in an

Uncharted Un future

The health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students is paramount Reopening Plan Following state, national, and international guidance, a comprehensive reopening plan was developed with precautions in place for protocols and procedures around mask wearing, daily health attestations, hand hygiene, physical distancing, healthy ventilation, daily disinfection cleaning, and more. These were essential to reopening in order to maximize peer and student-teacher relationships which are so crucial. The school also worked with the extraordinary panel of medical experts whom the entire Boston Jewish day school community has consulted during this process.

Financials Maimonides responded to the pandemic with the necessary spending and revenue changes to meet the school’s evolving needs. Some costs shifted, such as technology (increased) and facility costs (decreased), and certain revenue streams (i.e. fees) were less than anticipated. School administration worked tirelessly to secure a $1.8M Paycheck Protection Program loan, which enabled us to keep faculty and staff on payroll during the spring. The financial impact of the pandemic continues as we face ongoing reopening and operational costs, and the budgetary impact of the loan remains somewhat uncertain as repayment and forgiveness amounts are clarified. This was also the second year of our strategic plan and we completed the consolidation of the Brener Building and Saval Campus into one, reducing our operating costs and diversifying our revenue base with rental income. This massive undertaking retrofitted the entrance, security area, play spaces, and classrooms for our elementary wing; reconfigured the learning center and library spaces; updated our maker space, student lounges, and auditorium; and redesigned the Elementary School parking lot area to accommodate traffic on one campus. In FY21 we will start to see the fruits of this project as we continue to receive rental income while realizing significant savings in operating costs. Our focus on affordability and efficiency continued as we launched MAI Way, our individualized tuition program, and rolled out Veracross, a school-wide information system with an updated billing

Our total enrollment (Early Childhood Center through Grade 12) declined between FY19 and FY20, going from 473 to 428 students. The associated decrease in tuition and fees of $800K was balanced by almost the same amount of reduction in salaries and benefits, achieved by executing cost-cutting measures. Several other changes, highlighted by an initial $600K lease payment received from the Town of Brookline for Brener rental and a large one-time capital investment in Saval for the consolidation, combined to end the year with a deficit of $1.2M, which was $300K lower than the FY19 deficit of $1.5M. Maimonides’ endowment and other investments ended the FY20 year on June 30 at almost $19M, down $1M from the previous year, attributable to declines in investment value from the economic downturn. Our holdings hit a nadir of $17.3M just after the pandemic started, though we are encouraged by the steady gains we have seen since April that have restored over 60% of our losses.

system (VCPay). MAI Way combined the former MAI (Maimonides Affordability Initiative) Program, which was targeted to middleincome families, with our need-based financial aid system. MAI Way, open to families with accumulated, non-retirement wealth of less than $1M, uses only income and the number of Maimonides students in a family to determine a family’s tuition obligation. In FY21 50% of our families received MAI Way tuition aid. This year we also created the Sibling Discount for full-pay families in a move toward expanding our affordability relief.

A special thank you this year to those who made a gift to support the Maimonides Family Relief Fund. This fund was established to provide one-time tuition assistance to minimize the financial impact on Maimonides families affected by the current COVID-19 health crisis. As at many schools, some families in our community were hit with salary reductions or job loss. The Family Relief Fund raised over $100,000 for immediate help to those families in the form of hardship aid, including grants from the Paul E. Singer Foundation and Combined Jewish Philanthropies which extend that support into the FY21 school year. Israel has gone many days, without…instruction and without teaching. But in distress it returned to G-d… and sought Him, and He responded to them… As for you, be strong, do not be disheartened, for there is reward for your hard work. CHRONICLES II 15:3-7
