Ken was the guest speaker, delivering a Christmas message at the club’s final meeting of the year, following which he was presented with a certificate to recognise his award.

Ken promotes reading programme for kids Continued from page 1.

The reading programme, introduced almost a decade ago, has ranged over a number of schools from Titahi Bay to Wainuiomata.

Rotary Club members and supporters volunteer to work one-on-one, in the classroom or library, with a pupil for 20 to 30 minutes, sharing a book or journal.

Children often choose a book from the library, or the volunteers suggest something. Occasionally a Rotary volunteer will borrow a book from a public library that reflects a pupil’s interests, be it comic superheroes or rugby league.

The children are enthusiastic about reading to a supportive and encouraging adult and enjoy the opportunity to discuss the subject matter and, sometimes, how it relates to their lives.

Many pupils have been presented with an atlas or Rotary sponsored dictionary at the end of the school year.

Often, these are the first books they have personally owned.

While schools value the programme, partly for the wider relationships that are formed between pupil and adult over the year, the volunteers have some-

times felt they could contribute more if they were better trained.

To address this need, the Rotary club engaged Awhina Education, at a supportive rate, to provide expert guidance in a tutorial session on phonics and other reading learning techniques.

Ken joined the reading programme at Wainuiomata Intermediate School in June 2014.

The following year he thoughtfully offered to take over the task of managing the roster of volunteers and liaising with the school.

It is only now that he has asked to retire from the role.

His role at Wainuiomata Intermediate has enabled the club to expand the programme to a second school in the suburb, Arakura Primary school.

Ken has helped make the programme a fitting symbol of this club’s community engagement.

A fluent speaker of Te Reo, Ken spent his formative years in the Ureweras.

He has had a comprehensive career in independent inquiry, conflict resolution and managing

projects that require discerning but discreet people management.

He has been a professional advisor on Health and Social Service Strategies, Government interface with Community Organisations, Maori initiatives and CEO of Presbyterian Support.

Ken is experienced in governance roles, including membership of the Boards of NZ Mental Health Foundation, and Turakina Maori Girls College.

Locally, he had an extended interim role as Minister of Khandallah Presbyterian Church.

Sophie’s success in APW student awards Onslow College’s Sophie Crozier is one of 18 students from 11 secondary schools to receive an Absolutely Positively Wellington Student Award.

Sophie was nominated for her maturity, leadership and creativity in everything she does.

The Year 12 student’s work on the Make it 16 campaign, which advocated for lowering the voting age to 16, gave her valuable experience helping to organise and publicise at the national level.

Sophie says the award inspires her to stay focussed and demonstrates how important it is that young people’s voices are not only heard but included in future decision making.

“Healthcare and COVID, education and climate change, are all massive issues we have to deal with in the future,” she says.

“A lot of political ideas are linked to youth, so it’s weird young people can’t vote when these issues have such an impact on their lives.”

Outstanding young people with outstanding stories are recognised in the Absolutely Positively Wellington Student Awards, says Wellington’s Mayor Andy Foster.

“The awards celebrate the tremendous time, energy and creativity these students have put into making Wellington and our communities great places to live and learn.

“Congratulations to all of our winners.

“It shows just how many talented young people we have in our Capital city,” he says.

Students are being recognised for everything from building a prosthetic arm for a child, to volunteering in the community and campaigning for change.

inbrief news Missed rubbish and recycling collections There is currently a nationwide driver shortage resulting in difficulty recruiting and retaining drivers across all industries, so Wellington City Council is seeing some delays with rubbish and recycling collections in Wellington as a result.

To address the issue, collections now start at 7am.

Rubbish and recycling may be picked up earlier than usual so it’s recommended to put everything out before 7am on the day of collection, or after 7pm the night before.

If rubbish or recycling is still not collected on the allocated day, the council is asking residents to please leave it out and it will be picked up the next day.

Deputy Mayor Sarah Free says the awards, which have run since 2014, highlight the contribution our rangitahi (young people) make to the Wellington community.

“You can see them working on national appeals, participating in environmental restoration projects regardless of the weather, spear-heading exciting initiatives in science, technology and cultural wellbeing, supporting the elderly and mentoring their contemporaries.”

This year’s winners include three Year 10 Scots College students, recognised for designing and building an affordable prosthetic arm, with a bionic hand.

A chance meeting at a school Open Day, introduced Lachlan Stinson, Liam Frampton and

Kahurangi Douglas, a Year 10 student at St Mary’s College, was also a winner after she represented her school at the O’Shea Shield Catholic school’s competition in Te Reo Māori scripture reading.

Benjamin Trolove to 3-year-old Avery and her parents. The boys had already designed a prototype of an arm, for a school project and were looking for someone to test it on.

The original plan was to build an arm that Avery could slip on quickly to help her balance on her bike and scooter. But as the project advanced, so did the possibilities to develop a hand that could grip objects.

Locky Stinson says while making the prototype was straight-forward, making it useful was more challenging.

Kahurangi Douglas, a Year 10 student at St Mary’s College, was also a winner.

Kahurangi represented her school at the O’Shea Shield Catholic school’s competition in Te Reo MƗori scripture reading.

Unable to find a senior student confident enough to speak Te Reo, Kahurangi stepped up, even though she is no longer fluent in MƗori and was the youngest person in the competition.

For the competition she had to practice and familiarise herself with six large scripture passages, showing dignity and honour for her school in taking up this wero (challenge.)

Kahurangi says her award has encouraged her to speak more MƗRri and it’s something she’d like to pursue further.

Every winner receives a $50 book voucher and a certificate which are presented at the school’s prizing giving. A civic function to honour the students, hosted by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, will be held in the new year.

Judi’s passion on display in Zealandia exhibit In her third solo exhibition at Zealandia, Wellington photo-artist Judi Lapsley Miller explores what happens from dusk to dawn.

When we might go to sleep, but the natural world burst into life.

Judi uses photo-artistic techniques to tell stories in a series of fanciful artworks from the real to the surreal.

Most of the subjects in this exhibition were photographed at Zealandia - Judi’s home-away-from-home.

Judi has long advocated for birds through writing, photography, and conservation fieldwork as a volunteer at Zealandia. Her step

into wildlife advocacy through creative interpretation was a natural progression.

Free from the constraints of pure nature photography, Judi exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, their hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that she hopes engenders empathy with other living creatures.

The country’s newest state highway number is here People travelling in or out of Wellington can now expect to see a new state highway number, with part of State Highway 1 (SH1) becoming State Highway 59 (SH59).

The section of state highway between Linden and Mackays Crossing has been renumbered State Highway 59 as Waka Kotahi continues to prepare the wider state highway network for the opening of Transmission Gully.

“It’s not often that we get to change a state highway number, but it’s an important step towards getting ready for Transmission Gully. It

will make it easier for people to navigate around the network, and for us to share accurate information in the event crashes or disruptions on the highways,” says Mark Owen, Waka Kotahi Regional Operations and Maintenance Manager.

This switch is being done before Transmission Gully motorway opens, so while the state highway number has changed, the current route remains the same. When Transmission Gully opens, it will become SH1. In the meantime, SH59 will create a small break in SH1

Kereru Flight Aviary BUY NOW & SAVE is under way Back in mid November, the Independent Herald ran a story about Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust, a volunteer-based charity in Ohariu that treats over 1,000 birds a year, taking in all types of native and non-native birds who have been injured or orphaned.

This includes over 80 injured Kerernj brought in by the community.

With our help, the Trust launched its Meri Kirihimete Kerernj Appeal encouraging people to make a donation instead of buying a commercial gift, with all donations going towards the construction of a new flight aviary.

Founding Trustee Craig Shepherd says the donations have been a fantastic boost.

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to all donors.

“We have had such a fantastic response from the public - as of today we have raised half of the $10,000 we need and this has allowed us to dig the foundations.

“Building this aviary will allow for greater numbers of injured kereru to make a quicker recovery, and for us to better assess their

Onslow College students put others first with books

A pair of Year 10 Onslow College students are doing their bit to ensure Kiwi kids have reading books this Christmas.

Sophie Downes and Tessa Thornley have joined forces with Kiwi Christmas Books, a grassroots charity organisation that aims to put books into the hands of underprivileged kids at Christmas.

They ask individuals and organisations across New Zealand to donate new books, ideally by Kiwi writers and illustrators, which they pass on to charities to distribute in the areas where books are donated.

Marie Elliott Jones Kiwi Christmas Books - Wellington Coordinator says it is rare two teenagers show the initiative to want to have a collection box in their school and neighbourhood and the two girls should be applauded.

The duo say the idea was part of a social studies project.

“We thought this would be a good idea to give this a go.

Margaret urges patience for disabled people as they shop

A Johnsonville woman is urging people to be considerate of disabled people when they shop.

Margaret McDonald’s daughter uses a wheelchair and she says she is often left waiting to use disabled toilets as fully functional people use them often for the extra space or

to accompany a child to the bathroom.

“Often people with disabilities cannot wait to use the toilet so it can cause a real problem for them,” Margaret says.

She says, like many people, she was ignorant to the plight of disabled people in shopping centres.

People get impatient with my daughter because it takes her longer to pay for things

and with the entry and exit points at shops changing due to the pandemic, it means it has become harder for disabled people.

“I’ll admit I was ignorant to the issue until

it affected my daughter.

“I don’t think people are making things difficult out of malice or anything like that but a bit of patience would go a long way.”

Short story competition open Mayor Andy Foster is pleased to announce that entries for the 2021 Absolutely Positively Wellington short story competition are now open.

“This is a chance for writers to set a creative course in the short story genre in the company of Patricia Grace, Katherine Mansfield, Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler, Margaret Mahy, Lloyd Jones, and Joy Cowley – celebrated New Zealand authors known for their short stories.

“Wellington is famous for its iconic wind – and whether you love it or hate it – it shapes our lives. We have chosen City of Wind as a theme this year and we are welcoming entries in Te Reo MƗori or English, or as a combination

of the two,” says Mayor Foster.

New fund to support living wage events Wellington city continues to be the Living Wage capital, with agreement today about the criteria for a new fund opening up to support 3ǀneke’s wonderful events to be places where everyone is paid a Living Wage.

KƗZai Whakatipu | Grants Subcommittee Chair Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons says the new fund of $300,000 a year will provide a great opportunity for events’ organisers to truly value their frontline staff, particularly cleaners and security staff.

“Wellingtonians have a lot of love for our frontline staff, who have helped keep our city cleaner, safer and a better place to live during the

pandemic,” says Councillor Fitzsimons.

“This fund is a way to show our appreciation. When we go out to enjoy the arts, culture and fun this summer, we can be proud that more Wellington workers are being paid fairly.”

Councillor Rebecca Matthews, who initiated the establishment of the fund through the Council Long-term Plan, says the Living Wage events fund was a way for councillors to make good on their commitments to make Wellington a Living Wage capital.

“We walk the talk at Wellington

City Council, by paying at least the Living Wage to directly employed and contract workers. This is another step to take the Living Wage message out to the city.”

Gina Lockyer, Chair of the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ, says the Wellington Living Wage movement was pleased to see how this fund would support a higher profile for fair pay in the capital, as well as helping workers earn enough to thrive, not just to survive.

“We’re not quite at the level of international Living Wage events such as the London Olympics, but this is a fantastic start. We’d love to

see all of local government accredited as Living Wage employers and take a lead for fair pay in their cities and towns.”

The fund aims to encourage non-Council events in Wellington city to adopt the living wage, for event organisers to be able to pay living wage for their staff, contractors directly employed and participating artists who deliver, produce and perform at non-Council event/s. .ƗZai whakatipu | Grants Subcommittee also approved Arts and Culture funding for 24 organisations totalling $139,938, including $49,200 of the annual Professional

Performing Arts funding, seven projects for the Waste Minimisation Seed Fund with grants totalling $84,397, and 12 organisations with grants totalling $148,000 through the Social and Recreation Fund.

It was also recommended that Te Kaunihera o 3ǀneke | Council agree to disestablish the Built Heritage Incentive Fund and establish a new Heritage Resilience and Regeneration Fund which will have a new targeted approach to supporting owners of earthquake prone heritage buildings who face deadlines for strengthening buildings by 2027.

Record-breaking exhibition Hilma af Klint opens Te Whare Toi is delighted to open Hilma af Klint: The Secret Paintings to the public.

Shown for the first time in Aotearoa, the exhibition showcases a Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint, whose works have captivated audiences and broken records for attendance worldwide.

In 2019, af Klint’s work was exhibited at Guggenheim Museum in New York, where it attracted the largest audience in the museum’s 60-year history.

Wellington Summer City changes for festive season Wellington City Council is changing up its summer events programme for the safety and well-being of our community in mind – but still with a focus on celebrating Christmas.

Wellington will be getting dressed up for Christmas with some trains and buses adorned in festive wrapping, street flags around the CBD, and the Christmas trees are already signalling the festive spirit in Midland Park and Courtenay Place.

The city will be lit up like a Christmas tree too, with the colours of Christmas glowing around Oriental Bay, the Cable Car tunnels, Carter Fountain, and Hikitea.

Watch out for some secret shop windows dressed up to delight too – there’ll be a few surprises dotted around for the inquisitive types.

The Wellington Summer Sampler kicks-off this week with two months of roving performance, pop-ups, activations, and publicly accessible spectacles happening within the COVID safety guidelines every weekend along the waterfront.

To make visiting the city and supporting local even easier for car users, there’ll be free weekend parking at Clifton car park with the first two hours parking free, then $2 per hour (or part there-of) to a maximum of $8 a day. The offer is available every weekend from 4-19 December 2021.

Two popular events, Gardens Magic and A Very Welly Christmas, have been reshaped to ensure the capital will still have a festive, safe and summer vibe.

Due to the Government’s requirements for operating events in the Traffic Light System, the Pasifika festival has been postponed to a later date, and the Council will replace the planned New Year’s Eve fireworks with alternative activities to be confirmed.

The Council has consulted with stakeholders and made these difficult decisions as COVID restrictions impacted the planning of annual summer city events.

Planning free events which are open to large communities has become difficult in the current environment, says Chief Customer

and Community Officer, Kym Fell.

“Our events team and stakeholders have the city’s health and safety at heart, especially as our more vulnerable members of the community are involved at all these events.

“Celebrating Christmas is still a focus though, so Wellington will get dressed up for the yuletide season, and we’ll be putting all our efforts towards supporting local industries and entertaining the community in a safe and festive way.”

A Very Welly Christmas weekend has been replaced with roaming festive performances and a dressed-up capital for Wellingtonians to celebrate the festive season, support local businesses and the creative sector.

Gardens Magic and Kids Magic won’t go ahead in their usual format in 2022, but we still want Wellingtonians to enjoy summer outings at the beautiful Botanic Garden – so we’re creating a self-led daytime Gardens Trail for people to spend a fun day out with their wKƗnau and friends. More information on the Gardens Trail will be available in mid-December.

While we haven’t set a new date for Pasifika yet, it’s likely to be later in 2022 as we still want to bring our Pacific communities together, to celebrate their stories, culture and knowledge.

The city has many other drawcards over the summer period with new lions having just arrived at the Wellington Zoo as well as a baby chimp and baby Cotton Top Tamarin.

There’s a variety of events taking place at Zealandia including puppet shows and WKƗQau yoga, Super Smash Cricket Double Headers at Cello Basin Reserve, fantastic exhibitions at City Gallery including Hilma af Klint: The Secret Paintings to name a few.

Metlink is also offering free travel to all passengers travelling on all bus and train services on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Updates on other free public city events in the year will be determined by Ministry of Health guidelines and the COVID-19 Protection Framework and requirements.

Te Kopahou on track for all to enjoy The new Track Network Plan for Te Kopahou Reserve has been given the go ahead at the Puroro Rangaranga – Social, Cultural and Economic Committee.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the proposed plan, which they believe strikes the right balance between managing and protecting the wild and rugged reserve with its special ecological and cultural values, while enabling better recreational access for people to enjoy it.

The draft plan was developed building on the work completed for the Outer Green Belt Management Plan, and alongside input from key stakeholders and reserve users. It went out for consultation over the summer of 2020/21 and received a strong response from a variety of users from mountain bikers and walkers, to four-wheel drivers and

environmental groups.

The final plan is the result of further ideas and information gathered from over 300 submissions, multiple visits, and conversations with reserve users out on site.

The feedback gathered helped officers to better understand the needs, expectations, and desires of the different users, as well as concerns and how they might be mitigated.

Deputy Mayor Sarah Free is excited for the future of Te Kopahou and believes the new plan finds the right balance between conservation and recreation for a range of users.

“Te Kopahou is a special place for Wellingtonians, and as a destination it attracts people for all sorts of different reasons. It’s so important the track network plan reflects the needs of all the different users, and I think it does that very well, thanks

to the considered and passionate input from the community.

“The plan is future focused and takes into consideration the longterm impacts of the decisions we make now. The reserve has so much to offer, and the plan lays out our commitment to protecting and enhancing that for the generations to come.”

When it comes to implementing the final plan, the Council anticipates ongoing partnerships with a range of community groups and organisations who are deeply passionate about the reserve and the values and recreational activities it has to offer.

Actions to come out of the plan will include new tracks, improvements to existing tracks, and amenity improvements (entrances redevelopment, shelter, water, signs, interpretation and seats), as

well as monitoring and management of weeds.

Final track locations and construction methods will be carefully developed to enable opportunities for people to experience the area while protecting the important natural environment that attracts people in

The plan implementation will begin in 2023, subject to funding being approved in the 2023/2024 Annual Plan and subsequent Long-Term Plan (2024-2034).

Colgate Games to proceed in Wellington Following excellent entry numbers for the 2022 Colgate Games Athletics New Zealand have confirmed the North Island event at Newtown Park will go ahead in January.

Last week they announced the North Island Games at Newtown Park from January 7 to 9 could proceed in line with current government guidelines including Sport NZ and the Prime Minister’s Office and

Cabinet.

However, this was under the proviso that both events would attract sufficient numbers ahead of the entry deadline which closed at 11.59pm on Sunday.

Thankfully, entry numbers have held up well despite the challenging past few months and we are excited that the iconic annual event for children aged 7-14 will go ahead

as planned.

Athletics NZ CEO Pete Pfitzinger said: “We are delighted with the level of entries received and really pleased that both the Colgate Games North and South Island can go ahead.

“The Colgate Games are a highlight of the summer calendar and we are committed to holding a fun and safe event.”

Both the Wellington and Southland regions are currently at orange in the new traffic light system which forms the new Covid-19 Protection Framework. Note, for the event to go ahead both regions will need to be at orange or green light.

The Colgate Games is a vaccination pass event with all attendees aged 12 years and three months and older needing to hold a vac-

cination pass to attend the event.

Additional information on venue access protocols will be made available next week.

For clarification those who need to hold a vaccine pass (all those aged 12 and three months and above) includes athletes, officials, volunteers, vendors, team managers, coaches, parents and spectators.

Kapiti Women’s Triathlon - a special event The Kapiti Women’s Triathlon, to be held on Sunday 27th February 2022, ais the longest-running women’s-only event in NZ. This iconic contest began in 1983 with the aim of encouraging women and girls to get out and have a go, focusing on fun, fitness and health.

It remains an amazing ‘grass roots’ event for women, run by women with a low key fun and friendly approach where any woman can find a challenge to suit them.

One of the unique aspects of this event is the great Group training options available to everyone. From openwater swim practices to cycle and run technique sessions and regular Sunday morning group swim sessions at Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Women can choose to take part in the full triathlon, a duathlon, a ateam event, a fun run or the sprint distance triathlon for those who wish to push themselves.

The events are run in age group waves of 50 or less to avoid congestion. The first wave starts at 8.30 am with the Sprint Distance Triathlon (750 m/18 km/5 km) and duathlon (500 m/18 m /5 km). Further waves start at 9am, participants are advised of their wave at registration.

ACTIVE Despite a soggy last few days, a proven and great way to get the kids active is by getting them to be part of the school “Walking Bus” programme.

Th is is where children, generally aged 5-10 years old, are led along a safe and parent-supervised walk to their local school , usually taking 10-15 minutes.

Andrea Wilson of Glenside is one of these parents and has been thrilled to see the engagement her bus has as they learn about birdlife, flora, local landmarks and how it all relates to their local environment.

For many, golf is a social and leisurely activity which allows for time spent outdoors, but for four Wellington based young-professionals, the opportunity to play a whole day of golf to raise funds for the Cancer Society was one that could not be missed.

The Cancer Society’s ‘Longest Day Golf Challenge’ is a golfing endurance event that tests the skill and stamina of its participants.

The challenge is to complete four rounds of golf - that’s 72 holes - in one day to raise funds for the Cancer Society. The event takes advantage of the increased sunlight hours during summer, but participants can take part on any day in December or January.

Tom Fitall’s team, The Fore Horsemen, took part in the challenge last year, generously raising over $5,000 between them.

“By 2020 we had the golfing bug and saw this event as a way to feed our addiction while raising money for a fantastic cause. We were determined to take on the challenge”, said Tom Starting shortly after 5am, the group teed off at Manor Park Golf Sanctuary for the first 18 holes, before heading to Royal Wellington Golf Club to complete the remaining 54. After 15 and a half hours, with each player covering over 45km on foot, the team had done it, finishing up at around 9pm. Although the quality of their swings had slowly decreased, their spirits remained high.

“By the end of the day we had people cheering us on at the course and it was motivating to know we had a team of supporters behind us.

We were certainly sore the next day”, said Tom. Cancer Society’s Wellington Fundraising and Communications Manager, John Henton said, “We are extremely grateful for the golfers who

Some NZ Post Johnsonville posties who pound more than 20kms of pavement a day are now putting pedal to the metal with the rollout of Tern e-bikes into suitable areas.

As mail volumes decline, and urban areas continue to grow, the distance posties need to walk is increasing – so more appropriate delivery modes are being implemented.

NZ Post Area Service Delivery Manager Leon Metuariki says we’re excited about the introduction of the new e-bikes.

“This is a game changer for us,” he said.

“The Tern e-bikes have more capacity than previous e-bike models or motorbikes, and although they can carry a variety of items up to 200kg (including the rider) the maximum weight load of mail is set at 32.5kg. The sizing is adjustable, and the battery lasts the distance.”

Ajaz produces performance for the ages The term ‘historic performance’ is often overused, especially in sport, but what spinner Ajaz Patel did on Saturday night in India should be celebrated for many years to come.

Patel became just the third bowler in cricket history to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings on Saturday, saying the stars have aligned for him to enjoy record figures of 10-119 in Mumbai, his birthplace.

The 33-year-old Patel took four wickets on day one and added another six on day two - two in his first over of the day and another four after lunch, as India were dismissed for 325 in the series-deciding Test at Wankhede Stadium.

“It is quite a special occasion for me; not only me, my wife, my mum and dad, my family. A very special day for me. To be born here and then come back here

and achieve something like that is pretty special,” said Patel, who moved to New Zealand with his family when he was a child,” he told reporters.

Jim Laker (10-53), for England against Australia in 1956, and Anil Kumble (10-74), for India against Pakistan in 1999, were the only bowlers to have previously taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings.

Ironically both Patel and Laker

have played cricket for Auckland with the English spinner playing for them in 1951/52.

“Welcome to the club AjazPatel.

Perfect10. Well bowled!” Kumble said in a tweet.

One can only hope Patel is celebrated for his achievement for the rest of his life and long beyond it.

Hopefully New Zealand Cricket can have the foresight to produce some memorabilia for the

achievement.

If they are smart enough, and I question whether they are, they’ll produce something for the man-cave of New Zealand cricket tragics everywhere.

Patel will only get limited chances to add to his 11 tests, such is the life of a front-line Kiwi spinner but he must be celebrated for an achievement we are unlikely to see again from a Kiwi bowler in our lifetimes.

Churton Park, Paparangi winners at JAM touch rugby tournament Two North Wellington schools earned awards at the Junior Touch JAM (Junior All-Schools Meet) Festival.

Churton Park School was awarded the Harmony Award for demonstrating respect, fairplay, attitude and good play and Paparangi School was awarded the Whanau award for their demonstration of school pride.

The event was designed as a

celebration of kids in sport, offering children of all skill levels and experience the chance to be a part of a team representing their school, offering camaraderie, self- confidence and pride in themselves and their school.

Touch rugby is the vehicle and surrounding the tournament is a carnival atmosphere including bouncy castles, slip’n slides, giant bubbles and face painting. The

competition is topped off with a popular colour run at the end of the tournament to celebrate the efforts of all the teams. 2021 saw the team numbers limited due to Level 2 restrictions but the fun was still at the same level as previous years.

Usually open to players from Year 1- Year 8, the 2021 tournament invited players from Year 3-Year 6.

Teams are school based to show school pride.

Touch JAM is a project initiated

by Atawhai Evolve Charitable Trust and delivered by Total Touch who also run the Alex Moore Touch rugby games on Monday nights in terms one and four.

The tournament also differs from other sporting events due to the fact that there are no scorecards kept.

Participation and good times are the focus and the awards are

handed out based on the AWHI values of the tournament.

These include, attitude, whanau, harmony, integrity as well as volunteer and referee/kaiwawao of the tournament.

The tournament attracted teams from outside the region.

Both the organisers and the teams are looking forward to Touch JAM 2022 which will be held in November back at Hutt Park.

Johnsonville trio come close to Bowls3Five title Johnsonville entered three teams in the Foxplan Bowls3Five event over the weekend at Wilton.

A total of 32 teams from the Bowls Wellington area took part Johnsonville entered three teams; Dale Rayner, Ross Gillett and Ian Franklin (reserve Bruce Miller); Logan and Brady Amer and Gill Oliver (reserve Gary Milicich) and Rob Ashton, Kaaren Guilford and Wayne Coleman (reserve Isi Taito).

There were three qualifying games in the morning, followed by three knockout games to find the winner.

After the morning’s play, two Johnsonville teams went through to the knockout rounds.

Rob, Kaaren and Wayne lost the first knockout game to the eventual winners Naenae B of Sar Alefosio, Alieta Vulu and Anne Gately.

Meanwhile, Dale and her team beat Wilton and the Naenae A team to reach the final.

The final went to a one-end tie-breaker and the result hung on the skips’ final bowls.

Johnsonville looked to be in a sound position at that point, only to have Sar play a seemingly impossible shot to change the head entirely, leaving Dale with no real chance of recovering with her last bowl which was a tough but fitting end to a final.

Johnsonville’s Ross Gillett, Dale Rayner and Ian Franklin were runners-up in the Foxplan Bowls3Five premier event over the weekend.
