Johnsonville claimed backto-back Pearce Cup premier two-day cricket titles after an eight wicket win over Onslow at Alex Moore Park over the weekend.

With a straight round-robin format deciding a winner instead of the usual final due to

the omicron pandemic, Johnsonville were in the box-seat to claim the title but a dominant display on both days against Onslow ensured the Pearce Cup remained in Johnsonville’s trophy cabinet for another 12 months after claiming the title for the first time in club history last season.

Captain Raki Weerasundara says the team was eager to build a period of dominance.

“It’s about building an era and a period of dominance for Johnsonville that doesn’t come along a lot in club cricket.

“It goes to show that what happened last year wasn’t a one-off and we’ve proved we deserve to be here again.”

Raki says in his decade at the club, it has changed a lot.

“When I arrived 10 years ago, we were struggling to win the Hazlett Trophy (division two) so to now be the best club in the city two years in a row means a lot.

“The culture at the club has changed, the people behind the scenes work very hard to keep the club in good heart and that shows in the junior numbers right through.”

Raki says the impacts of Covid were felt more this season, with the team’s depth tested, particularly late in the season.

He praised players who stepped-up to ensure the title defence remained on track.

played some big matches for us and they’re all guys who probably weren’t expecting to play a lot of premier cricket for us this year but did a great job when asked.”

Raki reserved the most praise for Johnsonville’s two key batsmen, Gareth Severin and Devan Vishvaka.

“They’re both young guys pushing for more opportunities with the Firebirds but they’ve both been so consistent for us these past few years and when they’ve been relied upon, they’ve come through,” he says.

Raki says coach, former Auckland bowler Matt McEwan has brought a player focus to the

group this year and a high standard to training and preparation.

“He’s come in and been fantastic for the group and really been important to our success this year.”

Raki says the team will now enjoy the off-season before discussions and planning for next season began in June.

Karori firefighter named top recruit

A new Karori-based firefighter has been honoured upon graduation last week.

Michael Lagatule, 32, was presented with the Top Recruit award for consistently displaying outstanding skills, leadership and mana throughout the course.

He will be based at Karori station once his career begins.

Twenty-one new career firefighters have joined Fire and Emergency.

The recruits graduated from

their 12-week recruit course at a ceremony held at the Fire and Emergency National Training Centre in Rotorua.

Throughout their three-month training course, they learnt the basics of being a firefighter.

This included learning how to fight fires, how to extract people trapped in cars and how to manage hazardous substances.

All of this in the middle of a COVID pandemic.

“We’re extremely proud of all the graduates,” Mike Williams, Manager Firefighter Development

says.

“There’s never been a course quite like this one. The recruits have not only had to take in everything the trainers have been teaching them, but some have also had to manage periods of isolation and sickness.

“It was fantastic to see them healthy and COVID free and showing their families and friends all their new skills at the ceremony yesterday.

“I look forward to seeing them put what they’ve learnt into action protecting their communities when they get onto station.”

Marking a milestone: new Wellington children’s hospital one step closer Capital & Coast DHB (CCDHB) has entered a new phase of the journey to a new children’s hospital for the region, with practical completion of its new building now achieved.

Last week, benefactors Mark Du najtsch i k a nd Dorot hy Spotswood officially handed ownership of the new building to CCDHB, which will now take over its portion of works to outfit the hospital.

The DHB’s new child health service, Te Wao Nui, will be based in the Mark Dunajtschik and Dorothy Spotswood building and bring child health services from across Wellington Regional Hospital under one roof.

“Existing child hospital and outpatient services will all move into the new hospital, making it easier for different teams to communicate and work together,” said chief executive Fionnagh Dougan.

“The building was designed with

the needs of tamariki and whƗnau in mind. Advantages include an increased number of ensuite bathrooms, and more single bedrooms, to provide more peace and privacy.

Improvements like this will result in better experiences for children receiving healthcare.”

Other new features include a vibrant Playscape and a sculptural ‘Tree of Life’ staircase.

A donation of $50million from Mr Dunajtschik in 2017 was the catalyst for this opportunity to create a purpose-built facility.

The community has been holding this service for many years to acknowledge those men and women who have served in armed conflict over the years and to also acknowledge the men and women who lost their lives in both World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The service is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Participants are free to lay a wreath if they wish to do so.

The Makara Community puts on a morning tea at the Makara Community Hall following the service and all are welcome to attend.

Massive ecosanctuary proposal received by Greater Wellington KƗkƗpǀ are a step closer towards returning to Te Whanganui-a-Tara after Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee received the feasibility study for PuketahƗ - the Wainuiomata Ecosanctuary.

Rowi Kiwi and Hihi are other threatened manu mƗori (native birds) whose conservation status could be improved in the proposed 3,313-hectare sanctuary, if the government agrees to enclose it with a 29km predator proof fence.

KƗkƗpǀ were last seen in the North Island in 1905 near Wainuiomata, takiwƗ (territory) of Taranaki WhƗnui ki te Upoko o te Ika (Taranaki WhƗnui).

Taranaki WhƗnui Trust Chair Kara Puketapu-Dentice said his iwi is aware of the enormous commitment required to care for KƗkƗpǀ, should NgƗi Tahu allow the critically threatened manu to return from their takiwƗ in the South Island.

“The sanctuary cannot happen without permission and knowledge transfer from their kaitiaki (guardians),” Mr Puketapu-Dentice said.

“Taranaki WhƗnui will work alongside its partners, including

NgƗi Tahu, to ensure the project upholds our kaitiaki responsibilities as mana whenua and enables the meaningful reconnection of our uri (descendants) to this special place.”

The study found that PuketahƗ would provide a much-needed mainland habitat for KƗkƗpǀ. Only about 200 of these unusual parrots remain, mostly on southern islands that are nearing capacity.

Once predator free, the study estimates PuketahƗ could sustain about 150 KƗkƗpǀ. Expanding their breeding programme close to an urban centre would lower costs and carbon emissions, while reducing the threat of inbreeding.

Study author Jim Lynch, the founder of Wellington’s highly successful Zealandia ecosanctuary, said the ngahere (forest) in PuketahƗ was ideal habitat for KƗkƗpǀ.

“Virgin forest of this kind is incredibly rare in Aotearoa. In Wainuiomata, we have an abundance of ancient rƗtƗ, miro, mataƯ, hƯnau and tawa but most importantly rimu, which covers 85 percent of the site.

Mr Lynch said.

“The site is surrounded by accessible ridgetops making it well configured for fencing. Having 40,000 hectares of adjacent forest in the Remutaka Range is also an advantage, as it’s likely that many bird species will eventually migrate from the sanctuary.”

Department of Conservation (DOC) Director of Terrestrial Science Mark Fitzpatrick welcomed news the study had been received.

“PuketahƗ has the potential to contribute to the outcomes of Te Mana o te Taiao – the Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

“Wellington is ideally placed to support the sanctuary given its wellgrounded regional networks whose membership includes the Predator Free Wellington programme, proactive local government, government agencies with environmental briefs and the internationally acclaimed Zealandia.”

Environment committee chair Penny Gaylor said the ecosanctuary could add as much as $160 million to the community in its first ten years.

Kākāpō are a step closer towards returning to Te Whanganui-a-Tara after Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee received the feasibility study for Puketahā - the Wainuiomata Ecosanctuary.

“It’s forecast to create 47 short term jobs and 16 permanent highquality careers in a needy socioeconomic area. We hope many of these positions are filled by mana whenua,” Cr Gaylor added.

“While the community supports the project, we know some are concerned that 10 hectares of forest will need to be cleared to construct the fence. If funding is approved, managing the biodiversity loss will be very important.”

The Environment Committee noted the importance to the proposal of the partnership between Taranaki WhƗnui, Greater Wellington as landowner and DOC. It also noted the proposal would require government funding in order to proceed.

The study indicates that approximately $42 million is required over 10-years to obtain resource consents, construct the fence and associated infrastructure, and eradicate pests.

Johnsonville Line works over Easter During the Easter long weekend, KiwiRail and its contractor John Holland will be working to complete the renewal of the overhead traction line equipment on the Johnsonville Line.

The works involve running new wire along the power poles from Fraser Avenue to the end of the line in Johnsonville.

As part of this work, KiwiRail are also replacing Raroa Bridge.

They will also be removing old masts.

Some of this mast removal work will be noisy as it involves the use of chainsaws.

KiwiRail will be restricting the use of chainsaws to daytime hours only.

The overhead line work will be carried out from 6am Friday April 15 to midnight on Monday April 18.

There will be no overnight work on April 18, though some work may extend into the late evening.

Likewise for the bridge replacement work, where KiwiRail will need to seal off the area from 6am Friday.

During this time, KiwiRail will need to set up a crane in the Raroa Station car park.

This means the parking bays in front of the station won’t be available and access will be restricted.

The red and yellow lines on the map below illustrate alternative walking routes.

During the four days, no trains will be running.

There will be bus replacements.

New speed limits for parts of State Highway 1 and State Highway 59 Drivers in the Wellington region can expect a new southbound variable speed limit (VSL) on the main highway into Wellington, which will help improve safety for motorists in the event of a crash, congestion or challenging weather conditions.

The VSL will run from the new State Highway 1 (SH1) Kenepuru interchange (on the new Transmission Gully motorway) and from Mungavin Avenue Interchange on State Highway 59, through to the SH1 Helston

Road overbridge in Johnsonville.

“A variable speed limit allows us to safely slow traffic in the event of incidents on the road that may affect safety, such as a crash, poor weather conditions, or when there is congestion and traffic merging ahead,” says Waka Kotahi Operations and Maintenance Manager, Mark Owen.

The new speed limits are an extension to an existing VSL currently in place on SH1 between Helston Road and the Terrace Tunnel,

to the southern end of Transmission Gully.

“We want everyone using our roads to get to where they’re going safely. Speed is always a factor in the severity of any crash and can be the difference between a person being killed, seriously injured, or walking away unharmed,” says Mr Owen.

“Being able to vary the speed limit is one of the many tools we have for keeping people safe on the roads. It’s a handy reminder that if you see a variable speed limit operating, there’s a reason that you need to immediately slow down.”

Electronic VSL signs are being progressively installed along SH1, with temporary static signs in place on the approach to the southbound SH1/SH59 merge at Linden for the time-being.

This work is part of an ongoing programme of improvements Waka Kotahi is undertaking to help people safely and easily navigate the state highway network, and keep them informed about any incidents, closures or delays. More information about that work can be found here.

The work includes additional electronic signage, and improvements to CCTV and monitoring capabilities so that Waka Kotahi can make sure the wider state highway network is operating safely and efficiently.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has also set new speed limits for sections of road that were built or realigned as part of the SH1 Transmission Gully project, including the northern and southern sections of SH59.

The Karori Brownies got up close and personal with the weta hotels they helped fundraise for last year.

They donated $311 to Predatory Free Karori and $311 to Bellyful Karori as part of their community efforts last year.

Last week, Predator Free Karori brought

the three weta hotels along with them to Karori Brownies. The weta hotels are made of recycled Totara and the hope is they will be durable in Fairy Lane.

The Brownies went for a walk to find places to put them so that the weta would be safe and see their hard work in action.

They found three great places around Fairy Lane in Karori Park.

One night, two solo Circa shows Wellington’s Circa Theatre is in for a double treat of wartime storytelling from April 22 to May 14.

I’ll Tell You This for Nothing tells the tale of Phyllis Garvin an Irish QA nurse on the WWII battlefields who lived most of her life in New Zealand, was honoured with France’s highest decoration, the Légion d’Honneur for extreme bravery.

Sent to the front lines on D-Day, Phyllis’s hospital followed the battles through Europe and finally to the liberation of Belsen Concentration Camp. Amidst this drama she found the love of her life, a Catholic, thus igniting a new and personal war with her mother, a Protestant. In a solo performance written and acted by her daughter Kate Jason-Smith, I’ll Tell you this for Nothing presents the dramatic and often humorous tale of her mother’s life in an acclaimed show about war, courage, danger and romance.

Geoffrey’s WWII exploits - a Dunedin butcher who became “a bloody legend” in a small northern Italian town. Geoffrey hid in a cave for two years after twice escaping from his German captors. During this time, he was looked after by a kind and courageous Italian family who nicknamed him Milord Goffredo. Jan wrote this play to honour her father’s generation, men whose lives were shaped by their war experiences, and who turned to each other for

support and comradeship in the post war years. Tom Kereama from Wellington and Maddie Brooks Gillespie, originally from Australia, now residing in Newtown, return from our highly successful season of The Pied Piper in 2019. This time they both get to be pirates! You may also recognize Tom from playing multiple characters in Badjelly the Witch. Tom is also regularly seen performing around Wellington and was most recently seen playing Shakespeare’s King John in the New Zealand Fringe Festival.

Maddie has been a long standing and very proactive member of Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand. At the tender age of only 18, she has already worked for most of Wellington’s professional theatres, as well as being chosen to perform and learn at the Globe Theatre in London.

Easter double-header looms for North Wellington

There’s no easy game in the Men’s Central League and so round two proved to be over the weekend.

TFS North Wellington FC were mentally preparing for tomato sandwiches and an 8 hour round bus trip to face Napier City Rovers but the tricky little virus that is Covid 19 caused the game to be postponed.

NZF regulations rumbled into play when it became clear that the team from Park Island could not muster anywhere near a full-strength side due to illness.

The match has been rescheduled for Easter Monday in what will now be a double header weekend for Norths.

New entrants, Havelock North, could not escape a bus ride of their own though and set Google Maps for Karori Park.

It may have been a long ride home though as they reflected on losing 4-1 to Waterside Karori.

Home advantage meant nothing for Western Suburbs though and there will be a call for a Stewards Enquiry in the aftermath of an 8-0 hiding courtesy of Miramar Rangers.

Wellington Phoenix Reserves were comfortable in their 3-0 win over Petone and the same can be said for

Wellington Olympic who were untroubled in their 4-0 win over Wellington United.

In the Men’s Premier League, Lower Hutt City slugged out a 1-1 draw with Wainuiomata.

There was no lead in the pencil required for the referee when North Wellington hosted Miramar Rangers.

In a game that desperately needed a goal, both sides took a point home in a nil all draw.

Island Bay and Upper Hutt City couldn’t be separated, and they too joined the One Point Club with a 2 all draw.

Promotion contenders, Stop Out, did manage to take away three points on the road when the beat Wellington Olympic 2-1.

Seatoun made the most their hometown advantage with a thundering 5-0 win over Tawa.

With top women’s football yet to get underway, North Wellington played Wellington United in the preseason Kelly Cup tournament.

Ashleigh McCutcheon brought her A game for Norths and captured all three goals to lock up the match in another draw, 3-3.

The penalty shootout that followed recording the win for North Wellington.

Warnie gets amazing farewell Watching the State Memorial for Shane Warne on television from the Melbourne Cricket Ground was an emotional ride I won’t soon forget.

The formality demanded he be called Mr Shane Warne for the evening but the Mr just seemed far too uptight for a celebration of Warne.

No celebrity death has affected me emotionally as much as this or for as long as this.

It still doesn’t feel right to have witnessed the end of Warnie at such a young age.

For me, it still feels like a shocking and early end to a large chapter of my childhood.

For people that didn’t know the type of bloke Warne was beyond his win-at-all-costs cricket approach or his tabloid-selling offfield life, the part-time magician

and fulltime showman clearly had a heart of gold and enough flaws that he was always relatable.

What was most admirable about Warne on the field was how he made classy batsman look foolish when he got them out.

It appeared he could get batsmen out by his mere presence at the tip of his mark, spinning the ball from one hand to another as he waited to bowl.

He didn’t care about the cult status of the baggy green Australian test cap, he was happier in a wide-brim hat with a bit of zinc on his chops.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain, who looked on the verge of tears while talking about the spin king before the event, said the English played the name and not the spinning ball.

That was the showmanship of

Warne and a month on from his death, I still find myself, as a cricket tragic, baffled that he has left us at just 52-years-old.

For a man who hung around guys like Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Mick Jagger, he remained someone who had a common man’s aura.

One of the highlights of the night for me was the realisation the United Nations sent a representative to acknowledge the passing because Warne was involved with wildlife endeavours with them, who knew?

The photos of him with sick and underprivileged children with whom he worked with illustrated the bloke he was.

His smiles in all those photos are absolutely genuine, they are smiles of a man who was clearly happy to brighten someone’s day,

not because it was good PR to do so but because he wanted to do it.

That was the special nature of Warnie.

Yes, he’s an Aussie and on this side of the Tasman you aren’t meant to naturally like them but Warne was different.

A larrikin for sure, Shane was always willing to use his star power for good.

Make A Wish children, Tsunami relief and earthquake games were something he flew all round the world to be part of when he did not need to.

Hopefully, this past month has given people the chance to get to know the classy guy Warnie was off the field and why his death was and is such a shame.

A St Kilda AFL fan who loved a cheese toastie, a tin of baked beans

and a cheeky smoke, he broke the mould and revolutionised cricket and rejuvenated the art of leg spin.

Adam Gilchrist hoped last Wednesday’s MCG tribute would be a full stop on the grieving but the celebrations of a career and a character would continue for years to come.

I feel for his kids, who have had to share their grieving process with millions around the world who felt, on a lesser level, they had lost a part of their lives.

As I mentioned in my previous column, I have a signed Shane Warne and Richard Hadlee cricket ball, purchased days before Warne’s death and I’ll cherish it as a small reminder of the greatness of Shane Keith Warne - certain to be the best cricketer I’ll see in my lifetime.

Allegra wins gold at Maadi Cup Onslow College rower Allegra Leonard provided the golden moment for her school at the Maadi Cup National Secondary Schools’ regatta on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel.

Allegra won the Under-16 girls single sculls title in dominant fashion to record Onslow’s first ever gold medal at the regatta.

She won her heat, quarter-final and semi-final in convincing fashion before prevailing in the final in a time of 8:55:43, more than

a second clear of Waitaki Girls’ High School’s Emma Spittle.

Onslow’s under-17 single sculler Tessa Thomson finished fifth in her A final, 10 seconds outside the medals.

She also made the North Island squad to race against the South Island.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate rowers had a great time on the water with their single sculls girls making C and D finals.

Highlights included Sophie

Zhang finishing fourth in the under-16 C final and Amy Harvey-Green finishing first in the under-18 D final.

The event sees 1200 secondary school rowers compete in the week-long regatta in what is the pinnacle event of their season.

Johnsonville claimed backto-back Pearce Cup premier two-day cricket titles after an eight wicket win over Onslow at Alex Moore Park over the weekend.

With a straight round-robin format deciding a winner instead of the usual final due to

the omicron pandemic, Johnsonville were in the box-seat to claim the title but a dominant display on both days against Onslow ensured the Pearce Cup remained in Johnsonville’s trophy cabinet for another 12 months after claiming the title for the first time in club history last season.

Captain Raki Weerasundara says the team was eager to build a period of dominance.

“It’s about building an era and a period of dominance for Johnsonville that doesn’t come along a lot in club cricket.

“It goes to show that what happened last year wasn’t a one-off and we’ve proved we deserve to be here again.”

Raki says in his decade at the club, it has changed a lot.

“When I arrived 10 years ago, we were struggling to win the Hazlett Trophy (division two) so to now be the best club in the city two years in a row means a lot.

“The culture at the club has changed, the people behind the scenes work very hard to keep the club in good heart and that shows in the junior numbers right through.”

Raki says the impacts of Covid were felt more this season, with the team’s depth tested, particularly late in the season.

He praised players who stepped-up to ensure the title defence remained on track.

“Guys like Avinash Shastri who played the final, Connor Lusty who played six games for us this year, Dave Hudson

played some big matches for us and they’re all guys who probably weren’t expecting to play a lot of premier cricket for us this year but did a great job when asked.”

Raki reserved the most praise for Johnsonville’s two key batsmen, Gareth Severin and Devan Vishvaka.

“They’re both young guys pushing for more opportunities with the Firebirds but they’ve both been so consistent for us these past few years and when they’ve been relied upon, they’ve come through,” he says.

Raki says coach, former Auckland bowler Matt McEwan has brought a player focus to the

group this year and a high standard to training and preparation.

“He’s come in and been fantastic for the group and really been important to our success this year.”

Raki says the team will now enjoy the off-season before discussions and planning for next season began in June.

Karori firefighter named top recruit

A new Karori-based firefighter has been honoured upon graduation last week.

Michael Lagatule, 32, was presented with the Top Recruit award for consistently displaying outstanding skills, leadership and mana throughout the course.

He will be based at Karori station once his career begins.

Twenty-one new career firefighters have joined Fire and Emergency.

The recruits graduated from

their 12-week recruit course at a ceremony held at the Fire and Emergency National Training Centre in Rotorua.

Throughout their three-month training course, they learnt the basics of being a firefighter.

This included learning how to fight fires, how to extract people trapped in cars and how to manage hazardous substances.

All of this in the middle of a COVID pandemic.

“We’re extremely proud of all the graduates,” Mike Williams, Manager Firefighter Development

says.

“There’s never been a course quite like this one. The recruits have not only had to take in everything the trainers have been teaching them, but some have also had to manage periods of isolation and sickness.

“It was fantastic to see them healthy and COVID free and showing their families and friends all their new skills at the ceremony yesterday.

“I look forward to seeing them put what they’ve learnt into action protecting their communities when they get onto station.”

Marking a milestone: new Wellington children’s hospital one step closer Capital & Coast DHB (CCDHB) has entered a new phase of the journey to a new children’s hospital for the region, with practical completion of its new building now achieved.

Last week, benefactors Mark Du najtsch i k a nd Dorot hy Spotswood officially handed ownership of the new building to CCDHB, which will now take over its portion of works to outfit the hospital.

The DHB’s new child health service, Te Wao Nui, will be based in the Mark Dunajtschik and Dorothy Spotswood building and bring child health services from across Wellington Regional Hospital under one roof.

“Existing child hospital and outpatient services will all move into the new hospital, making it easier for different teams to communicate and work together,” said chief executive Fionnagh Dougan.

“The building was designed with

the needs of tamariki and whƗnau in mind. Advantages include an increased number of ensuite bathrooms, and more single bedrooms, to provide more peace and privacy.

Improvements like this will result in better experiences for children receiving healthcare.”

The community has been holding this service for many years to acknowledge those men and women who have served in armed conflict over the years and to also acknowledge the men and women who lost their lives in both World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The service is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Participants are free to lay a wreath if they wish to do so.

The Makara Community puts on a morning tea at the Makara Community Hall following the service and all are welcome to attend.

Massive ecosanctuary proposal received by Greater Wellington KƗkƗpǀ are a step closer towards returning to Te Whanganui-a-Tara after Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee received the feasibility study for PuketahƗ - the Wainuiomata Ecosanctuary.

Rowi Kiwi and Hihi are other threatened manu mƗori (native birds) whose conservation status could be improved in the proposed 3,313-hectare sanctuary, if the government agrees to enclose it with a 29km predator proof fence.

KƗkƗpǀ were last seen in the North Island in 1905 near Wainuiomata, takiwƗ (territory) of Taranaki WhƗnui ki te Upoko o te Ika (Taranaki WhƗnui).

Taranaki WhƗnui Trust Chair Kara Puketapu-Dentice said his iwi is aware of the enormous commitment required to care for KƗkƗpǀ, should NgƗi Tahu allow the critically threatened manu to return from their takiwƗ in the South Island.

“The sanctuary cannot happen without permission and knowledge transfer from their kaitiaki (guardians),” Mr Puketapu-Dentice said.

“Taranaki WhƗnui will work alongside its partners, including

NgƗi Tahu, to ensure the project upholds our kaitiaki responsibilities as mana whenua and enables the meaningful reconnection of our uri (descendants) to this special place.”

The study found that PuketahƗ would provide a much-needed mainland habitat for KƗkƗpǀ. Only about 200 of these unusual parrots remain, mostly on southern islands that are nearing capacity.

Once predator free, the study estimates PuketahƗ could sustain about 150 KƗkƗpǀ. Expanding their breeding programme close to an urban centre would lower costs and carbon emissions, while reducing the threat of inbreeding.

Study author Jim Lynch, the founder of Wellington’s highly successful Zealandia ecosanctuary, said the ngahere (forest) in PuketahƗ was ideal habitat for KƗkƗpǀ.

“Virgin forest of this kind is incredibly rare in Aotearoa. In Wainuiomata, we have an abundance of ancient rƗtƗ, miro, mataƯ, hƯnau and tawa but most importantly rimu, which covers 85 percent of the site.

“The site is surrounded by accessible ridgetops making it well configured for fencing. Having 40,000 hectares of adjacent forest in the Remutaka Range is also an advantage, as it’s likely that many bird species will eventually migrate from the sanctuary.”

Department of Conservation (DOC) Director of Terrestrial Science Mark Fitzpatrick welcomed news the study had been received.

“PuketahƗ has the potential to contribute to the outcomes of Te Mana o te Taiao – the Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

“Wellington is ideally placed to support the sanctuary given its wellgrounded regional networks whose membership includes the Predator Free Wellington programme, proactive local government, government agencies with environmental briefs and the internationally acclaimed Zealandia.”

Environment committee chair Penny Gaylor said the ecosanctuary could add as much as $160 million to the community in its first ten years.

The Environment Committee noted the importance to the proposal of the partnership between Taranaki WhƗnui, Greater Wellington as landowner and DOC. It also noted the proposal would require government funding in order to proceed.

The study indicates that approximately $42 million is required over 10-years to obtain resource consents, construct the fence and associated infrastructure, and eradicate pests.

Johnsonville Line works over Easter During the Easter long weekend, KiwiRail and its contractor John Holland will be working to complete the renewal of the overhead traction line equipment on the Johnsonville Line.

The works involve running new wire along the power poles from Fraser Avenue to the end of the line in Johnsonville.

As part of this work, KiwiRail are also replacing Raroa Bridge.

They will also be removing old masts.

Some of this mast removal work will be noisy as it involves the use of chainsaws.

KiwiRail will be restricting the use of chainsaws to daytime hours only.

The overhead line work will be carried out from 6am Friday April 15 to midnight on Monday April 18.

There will be no overnight work on April 18, though some work may extend into the late evening.

Likewise for the bridge replacement work, where KiwiRail will need to seal off the area from 6am Friday.

During this time, KiwiRail will need to set up a crane in the Raroa Station car park.

This means the parking bays in front of the station won’t be available and access will be restricted.

The red and yellow lines on the map below illustrate alternative walking routes.

During the four days, no trains will be running.

There will be bus replacements.

New speed limits for parts of State Highway 1 and State Highway 59 Drivers in the Wellington region can expect a new southbound variable speed limit (VSL) on the main highway into Wellington, which will help improve safety for motorists in the event of a crash, congestion or challenging weather conditions.

The VSL will run from the new State Highway 1 (SH1) Kenepuru interchange (on the new Transmission Gully motorway) and from Mungavin Avenue Interchange on State Highway 59, through to the SH1 Helston

Road overbridge in Johnsonville.

“A variable speed limit allows us to safely slow traffic in the event of incidents on the road that may affect safety, such as a crash, poor weather conditions, or when there is congestion and traffic merging ahead,” says Waka Kotahi Operations and Maintenance Manager, Mark Owen.

The new speed limits are an extension to an existing VSL currently in place on SH1 between Helston Road and the Terrace Tunnel,

to the southern end of Transmission Gully.

“We want everyone using our roads to get to where they’re going safely. Speed is always a factor in the severity of any crash and can be the difference between a person being killed, seriously injured, or walking away unharmed,” says Mr Owen.

“Being able to vary the speed limit is one of the many tools we have for keeping people safe on the roads. It’s a handy reminder that if you see a variable speed limit operating, there’s a reason that you need to immediately slow down.”

Electronic VSL signs are being progressively installed along SH1, with temporary static signs in place on the approach to the southbound SH1/SH59 merge at Linden for the time-being.

This work is part of an ongoing programme of improvements Waka Kotahi is undertaking to help people safely and easily navigate the state highway network, and keep them informed about any incidents, closures or delays. More information about that work can be found here.

The work includes additional electronic signage, and improvements to CCTV and monitoring capabilities so that Waka Kotahi can make sure the wider state highway network is operating safely and efficiently.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has also set new speed limits for sections of road that were built or realigned as part of the SH1 Transmission Gully project, including the northern and southern sections of SH59.

The Karori Brownies got up close and personal with the weta hotels they helped fundraise for last year.

They donated $311 to Predatory Free Karori and $311 to Bellyful Karori as part of their community efforts last year.

Last week, Predator Free Karori brought

the three weta hotels along with them to Karori Brownies. The weta hotels are made of recycled Totara and the hope is they will be durable in Fairy Lane.

The Brownies went for a walk to find places to put them so that the weta would be safe and see their hard work in action.

They found three great places around Fairy Lane in Karori Park.

One night, two solo Circa shows Wellington’s Circa Theatre is in for a double treat of wartime storytelling from April 22 to May 14.

I’ll Tell You This for Nothing tells the tale of Phyllis Garvin an Irish QA nurse on the WWII battlefields who lived most of her life in New Zealand, was honoured with France’s highest decoration, the Légion d’Honneur for extreme bravery.

Sent to the front lines on D-Day, Phyllis’s hospital followed the battles through Europe and finally to the liberation of Belsen Concentration Camp. Amidst this drama she found the love of her life, a Catholic, thus igniting a new and personal war with her mother, a Protestant. In a solo performance written and acted by her daughter Kate Jason-Smith, I’ll Tell you this for Nothing presents the dramatic and often humorous tale of her mother’s life in an acclaimed show about war, courage, danger and romance.

During this time, he was looked after by a kind and courageous Italian family who nicknamed him Milord Goffredo. Jan wrote this play to honour her father’s generation, men whose lives were shaped by their war experiences, and who turned to each other for

support and comradeship in the post war years. Tom is also regularly seen performing around Wellington and was most recently seen playing Shakespeare’s King John in the New Zealand Fringe Festival.

Maddie has been a long standing and very proactive member of Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand. At the tender age of only 18, she has already worked for most of Wellington’s professional theatres, as well as being chosen to perform and learn at the Globe Theatre in London.

Easter double-header looms for North Wellington

There’s no easy game in the Men’s Central League and so round two proved to be over the weekend.

TFS North Wellington FC were mentally preparing for tomato sandwiches and an 8 hour round bus trip to face Napier City Rovers but the tricky little virus that is Covid 19 caused the game to be postponed.

NZF regulations rumbled into play when it became clear that the team from Park Island could not muster anywhere near a full-strength side due to illness.

The match has been rescheduled for Easter Monday in what will now be a double header weekend for Norths.

New entrants, Havelock North, could not escape a bus ride of their own though and set Google Maps for Karori Park.

It may have been a long ride home though as they reflected on losing 4-1 to Waterside Karori.

Home advantage meant nothing for Western Suburbs though and there will be a call for a Stewards Enquiry in the aftermath of an 8-0 hiding courtesy of Miramar Rangers.

Wellington Phoenix Reserves were comfortable in their 3-0 win over Petone and the same can be said for

Wellington Olympic who were untroubled in their 4-0 win over Wellington United.

Warnie gets amazing farewell Watching the State Memorial for Shane Warne on television from the Melbourne Cricket Ground was an emotional ride I won’t soon forget.

The formality demanded he be called Mr Shane Warne for the evening but the Mr just seemed far too uptight for a celebration of Warne.

No celebrity death has affected me emotionally as much as this or for as long as this.

It still doesn’t feel right to have witnessed the end of Warnie at such a young age.

For me, it still feels like a shocking and early end to a large chapter of my childhood.

For people that didn’t know the type of bloke Warne was beyond his win-at-all-costs cricket approach or his tabloid-selling offfield life, the part-time magician

and fulltime showman clearly had a heart of gold and enough flaws that he was always relatable.

What was most admirable about Warne on the field was how he made classy batsman look foolish when he got them out.

It appeared he could get batsmen out by his mere presence at the tip of his mark, spinning the ball from one hand to another as he waited to bowl.

He didn’t care about the cult status of the baggy green Australian test cap, he was happier in a wide-brim hat with a bit of zinc on his chops.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain, who looked on the verge of tears while talking about the spin king before the event, said the English played the name and not the spinning ball.

That was the showmanship of

Warne and a month on from his death, I still find myself, as a cricket tragic, baffled that he has left us at just 52-years-old.

For a man who hung around guys like Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Mick Jagger, he remained someone who had a common man’s aura.

One of the highlights of the night for me was the realisation the United Nations sent a representative to acknowledge the passing because Warne was involved with wildlife endeavours with them, who knew?

The photos of him with sick and underprivileged children with whom he worked with illustrated the bloke he was.

His smiles in all those photos are absolutely genuine, they are smiles of a man who was clearly happy to brighten someone’s day,

not because it was good PR to do so but because he wanted to do it.

That was the special nature of Warnie.

Yes, he’s an Aussie and on this side of the Tasman you aren’t meant to naturally like them but Warne was different.

A larrikin for sure, Shane was always willing to use his star power for good.

Make A Wish children, Tsunami relief and earthquake games were something he flew all round the world to be part of when he did not need to.

Hopefully, this past month has given people the chance to get to know the classy guy Warnie was off the field and why his death was and is such a shame.

and a cheeky smoke, he broke the mould and revolutionised cricket and rejuvenated the art of leg spin.

Adam Gilchrist hoped last Wednesday’s MCG tribute would be a full stop on the grieving but the celebrations of a career and a character would continue for years to come.

I feel for his kids, who have had to share their grieving process with millions around the world who felt, on a lesser level, they had lost a part of their lives.

As I mentioned in my previous column, I have a signed Shane Warne and Richard Hadlee cricket ball, purchased days before Warne’s death and I’ll cherish it as a small reminder of the greatness of Shane Keith Warne - certain to be the best cricketer I’ll see in my lifetime.

Allegra wins gold at Maadi Cup Onslow College rower Allegra Leonard provided the golden moment for her school at the Maadi Cup National Secondary Schools’ regatta on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel.

Allegra won the Under-16 girls single sculls title in dominant fashion to record Onslow’s first ever gold medal at the regatta.

She won her heat, quarter-final and semi-final in convincing fashion before prevailing in the final in a time of 8:55:43, more than

a second clear of Waitaki Girls’ High School’s Emma Spittle.

Onslow’s under-17 single sculler Tessa Thomson finished fifth in her A final, 10 seconds outside the medals.

She also made the North Island squad to race against the South Island.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate rowers had a great time on the water with their single sculls girls making C and D finals.

Highlights included Sophie

Zhang finishing fourth in the under-16 C final and Amy Harvey-Green finishing first in the under-18 D final.

The event sees 1200 secondary school rowers compete in the week-long regatta in what is the pinnacle event of their season.

RIGHT: Onslow College rower Allegra Leonard won the under-16 girls single sculls title in dominant fashion at the Maadi Cup.
