Danny Rood likes his photos to show emotion and tell a story in every moment captured.

Photographer Danny Rood has been named a finalist in the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year competition.

Danny, who grew up in Johnsonville, says the photo, (pictured above), means a lot too him as he has it above his desk at home.

On an expedition to the subantarctic, the Spirit of Enderby encountered eight-metre swells between Rakiura/Stewart Island and Auckland Island.

Rather than remaining in his cabin, Danny went to the deck to document what he calls “the impressive weather” and captured an albatross gliding above the spray.

National award looms for talented photographer Continued from page 1.

“The big goal was to see the wildlife but the big thing I got out of the trip was how important our oceans are.

“With the photo, I just wanted to capture the scale of the waves, the way the wind was lashing the water and then the albatross just made the photo.”

Danny is one of 54 finalists across six categories having beaten out more than 6000 entries to make the final cut.

The winners will be announced in Auckland in October.

“Naturally I was pretty shocked and pretty chuffed.

“It was something I had been entering for a few years and had some disappointment in the past so it’s nice to be a finalist.”

Danny has the photo blown up behind his desk so it is a meaningful photo.

“That trip really helped me understand the importance, the power and impressiveness of our oceans.”

The 12-day trip was something Danny described as a trip of a lifetime.

Danny says he felt he had taken a strong photo in the seconds after he took it but he was thrilled people would now get a chance to see it.

As well as the landscape category which will be judged, Danny is part of the People’s Choice Award.

The photos will be displayed in Britomart later this month.

Stay vigilant during lockdown

Level four restrictions have been no deterrent for criminals in the neighbourhood with blatant stealing occurring even when residents are at home.

Vice president of the Onslow Residents Community Association Ray Chung believes there is still crime happening under the level 4 lockdown and it is more noticeable.

He says because residents are only allowed to exercise in their home area, strangers walking around the neighbourhood looking to commit a crime are more noticeable.

“There are a lot more people out there walking around and they are seeing people in their neighbourhood who they haven’t seen before and who are a little bit suspicious,” Ray says.

“Usually we have had people knocking on doors and if no one answers they go around the back of the house and look in the windows but under lockdown they can’t do that because there are likely to be people at home.”

What is happening Ray says is

because people are at home they are taking the opportunity to work around the house and they are opening up the garage door, and leaving it open while working elsewhere on the property.

“What we have had is one of the people who lives up the road from me was cleaning out his garage and then working on the garden and some opportunist went into the garage, took a box of things and walked up the road with it and after checking to see if there was anything they wanted from the box they dumped what they didn’t want on the side of the road,” he says.

“We spotted the box during a walk around the neighbourhood and when we walked with one of these neighbours the next day, it was still there and he recognised it as coming from his garage.”

According to data released by the New Zealand Police theft and related crime numbers in the Wellington Policing area from June 2019 to June 2020 were 1657 and from June 2020 to June 2021 their has been a reported drop in the number to 1200.

Buying local a key at level 3

People are being urged to buy local as many businesses reopen for click and collect orders under alert level 3.

With the drop in levels comes the prospect of takeaways and some specialty shops offering a click and collect function.

Karori Business Association manager Gary Holmes says businesses he deals with have followed the rules at level 4 and are excited to get back to work.

“You can feel the anticipation and we’ve seen many businesses are prepared for this because they went through it last year and

have the practices in place.

“The shining light of the lockdown last year was that people really supported their local community and I feel we will see the same outpouring of love this time around.”

For customer-facing businesses which cannot open at level 3, Gary says many are hopeful the restrictions will ease quickly.

“We saw last time that as long as the restrictions ease quickly, that the bounce back can be equally as fast.

“Having spoken to a number of Wellington business associations, we are all urging people to buy local and do their bit to get things back on track.”

To bee or not to bee is no longer a question September is Bee Aware Month – an opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the vital contribution honey bees make for the environment, on our economy, and for the future of urban ecology.

Once again, Wellington City Council is partnering with Apiculture NZ (ApiNZ) in this nationwide campaign and encouraging everyone to get involved with a hive of activities online and events around the Capital.

“Wellington City Council is committed to protecting the whole environment for its own intrinsic sake and for everyone to enjoy now – and in the future,” says Mayor Andy Foster.

“As guardians or kaitiaki of the

natural environment around us, we support hundreds of initiatives, volunteer groups, projects and funding streams. Together these form part of our remarkable environmental restoration journey, protecting, restoring and preserving the City’s local ecology from the sea to the trees to the bees.

“Bees are estimated to be worth $5 billion a year to the New Zealand economy – and that’s without including the priceless investment they make towards our parks and gardens.

“This is a team effort, and every bit counts so let’s all do our bit and help feed the bees!”

Mayor Andy Foster says the shift to Level 3 means there is a bit more flexibility with our general movements, but most services and facilities will remain the same.

“Our bubbles can now include close family and w nau, but transmission risk is still high so we need to heed the advice of the Ministry of Health and ensure we follow the guidelines around social distancing, wearing masks and mandatory scanning of QR codes.

“We are not out of the woods yet and need to remain vigilant to ensure the safety and well-being of our community, especially the more vulnerable members of the city.

“For Wellington City Council, Alert Level 3 means our staff

and contractors will be following safety protocols to keep themselves and the community safe. This includes limiting contact with the public and providing more services online or over the phone wherever we can.

“Rubbish and recycling kerbside collections will be fully operational under Level 3, whereas at Alert Level 4 because of the high level of handling required to sort materials and health and safety risk, there has been no glass collection, and any comingled recycling (wheelie bins/ recycling bags – paper, plastic, cans) put out was collected but went to landfill. Thank you to everyone who has washed and stored their recycling over Level 4,” says Mayor Foster.

“The Southern Landfill will be open to the public, but our recreation facilities, libraries, and other community venues will remain closed.

significant construction projects like the T kina Convention Centre, Town Hall, and the St James, plus Wellington Water projects on important infrastructure can start again with safety protocols in place.

Routine or planned maintenance work will recommence across the city on our roads, infrastructure and parks and reserves network, along with many smaller construction projects.

I’ve really enjoyed watching Down to Earth with Zac Efron and Working Moms.

A movie called Fury. A bit of history… World War II.

We watched a great country movie last night called.. Let Him Go about an elderly couple set out to save their ex-daughter-inlaw and their grandson from the clutches of her abusive husband and in-laws.

I liked Amazing Grace recently but also looking forward to the return of Wentworth. Same leading lady but completely different shows!

Dream Horse. An entertaining comedy drama based on a true story tells of an unlikely racehorse bred by a Welsh bartender who creates a community syndicate with their small savings.

The best show I’ve watched recently would have to be “Clarksons Farm” on Amazon Prime TV. A hilarious watch, looking forward to season two.

New Traffic and Parking Bylaw adopted Around 400 Wellingtonians shared their views on a new Traffic and Parking Bylaw which was unanimously adopted by the Council and came into effect on Friday.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says the previous bylaw was no longer fit for purpose so consultation with the public and stakeholder groups was carried out in May and June as part of the process to update it.

“Last year we adopted the new Parking Policy which prioritises safe and efficient movement of people, active and public transport over private vehicles and the use of public road

space based on a new parking space hierarchy.

“That policy is now reflected in the new bylaw and ensures we can protect, promote and maintain public safety on roads or parking areas owned or managed by the Council.”

The new bylaw includes a range of changes and additions. For example, it makes it easier for temporary road changes for pilot/trial schemes such as shared pathways, and simpler for parking officers to remove non-motorised vehicles that park on the street for longer than seven days such as trailers, boats and caravans. It also regulates the

parking of vehicles for advertising or selling purposes and manages mobile trading in roads and public places.

New tools to manage driving, riding or parking of vehicles on beaches and unformed legal roads are covered in the bylaw, as is the definition of taxi which has been updated to include small passenger service vehicles for services like Uber, Ola and Zoomy.

Wellingtonians were also asked to share personal experiences of engine braking noise or cruising activity disturbance, their thoughts on whether motorcycles should be able to park in car-sized parking spaces and how the

Council could best manage pedestrian and vehicle access and parking on narrow streets.

Almost 250 people provided suggestions of alternatives to parking on footpaths, which ranged from installing more broken yellow lines on the road, parking on one side of the street only, creating a shared use space or widening roads.

Over time the Council will work with communities to implement feasible solutions that give effect to the Parking Policy. As Wellington works towards becoming a net zero carbon capital by 2050 these solutions will increasingly

look to support active and public transport modes over private vehicle use.

Many of the new bylaw provisions require a Council traffic resolution prior to the changes coming into effect. Traffic resolutions require a 14-day notification period during which the public may submit their views to Council on the proposals.

The Importance of Lockdown Tasks? YIP! social connection The importance of social connection is often underestimated until our country is once again plunged into lockdown – and that’s when the brutal reality of isolation comes crashing into our lives.

One of the most important aspects of Age Concerns’ work around the country has a lot to do with seniors’ social connection. Not only do these connections help people to remain healthy physically and mentally, but they help to create communities that are resilient for times like these.

Age Concern Wellington services have been adapted to Level 4 restrictions where possible. Hundreds of volunteers around the region are now phoning their older friends rather than going for walks or visits together.

Collaboration is also key for Age Concern’s work in the community – particularly in times of crisis. Some of Age Concern’s clients get help with their shopping.

One volunteer was due to fetch her client’s shopping this week but as she had just returned from Auckland, it was safer to isolate. The Salvation Army agreed to deliver a food parcel instead.

Wellington City Mission and many other organisations are all strengthened by these types of collaborations. They can help many more people by working together.

Age Concern Wellington Region also collaborates closely with Wellington City Council. Together, the organisations are helping more seniors get Covid-19 vaccines.

Hey everyone! Hope you all made it home and hunkering down for the next few days. With all that is happening in the world, with all the war, covid, disasters etc, I think we are so lucky to be living in this wonderful country. Sure, we aren’t perfect and there is always room for improvement, but I can’t think of any other country I’d rather be in right now.

As we can learn from all that is going on in Australia, we shouldn’t be thinking of everyone being ‘stuck’ at home, rather being ‘safe’ at home. The next 3 day is a perfect chance to get up to speed with any maintenance tasks! Here are a few tasks / home work for your homeowners out there!

1. Clean your gutters! Ok, I’m repeating myself here, but with all the bad weather we’ve had if you haven’t cleaned your gutters yet, you are gambling with your property! So for that one point, here is another reminder!

2. Light fittings – If you haven’t switched to LED, the build-up of dust and dead bugs can be a hazard. Give all your light fitting a good clean! And while you are up there, check your smoke alarms as well.

3. Moved insulation – If it is a cool day head up into your attic space and check all your insulation is in place, don’t leave any gaps! Even the smallest gaps will affect the efficiency of your home.

4. Paint Touch Up – Hopefully, if by some small miracle we have some clear/ dry weather, head on outside and look for cracks in your cladding. Make sure your cladding is in good condition! If you see any fractures, seal them properly and paint over! This ensure your cladding does its job and stays weathertight!

Lets Get Welly Moving - “the cart before the horse” Opinion Decisions on mass rapid transit and improvements to State Highway 1 must be made before LGWM tinkers with city street scape improvements, according to a group of independent Wellington City Councillors (Diane Calvert, Wharangi Onslow/Western Ward; Sean Rush, Motukairangi Eastern Ward; Simon Woolf, Wharangi Onslow/Western; and Nicola Young, Pukeh nau Lambton Ward).

We are concerned about the lack of a clear plan for Wellington’s transport system, as creating a more people-centric central city first depends on the selection of any mass rapid transit (MRT) route and removing the central city traffic bottlenecks.

Last week we wrote to the Mayor (Andy Foster) who belongs to the LGWM Governance Reference Group and Council’s Chief Executive (Barbara McKerrow) who is a member of the LGWM Partnership Board.

Recently Council’s Planning and Environment Committee approved a business case for LGWM to include a ‘City Streets’ a package of public transport, walking, cycling and amenity improvements before decisions are made around the core purpose of the programme.

Councillors Calvert, Rush, Sparrow, Woolf and Young did not support as they wanted to see the “horse before the cart” with a better sequence and compatibility of projects.

Councillor Diane Calvert says “Most Wellingtonians, with the exception of several vocal lobbying groups, have lost confidence in LGWM delivering what really matters and minimising disruption on our city.

“Smaller city street improvements, such as peak bus priority lanes and other similar improvements

between the CBD and Karori, have now been swept up into the LGWM programme resulting in these improvements not due to be completed until 2030. This type of council work could easily remain within WCC without unnecessary overheads and time delays.”

The indicative business cases for MRT and SH1 were meant to be delivered in early 2021 – where are they?’ said Sean Rush. ‘The Gehl Public Space Public Life study has not been completed; the projects are disjointed and over-engineered; and many rely on MRT and strategic highway decisions yet to be decided’.

‘It’s like buying new curtains when your house needs re-piling,’ said Nicola Young. ‘LGWM must decide on the big issues first – starting with reducing traffic in the central city.

“The programme has already cost millions, and there’s nothing to show for it. Wellingtonians have just received their latest rates bill; many people have had increases over 16 percent and the Council already has incurred $1 billion debt – and rising’.

Business owners are vital to our city’s success; right now the retail, hospitality and travel sectors are struggling to survive due to the effects of Covid.

‘LGWM does not have the social licence to experiment further with the CBD’s streets and footpaths.

The negative feedback on the Council’s Long-Term Plan; results from the Residents’ Monitoring Survey; and the LGWM’s much-criticised engagement on Thorndon Quay, Lambton Quay and the Cobham Drive crossing proposal should be more than sufficient for LGWM’s Board to pause and take stock’, says Simon Woolf.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Tomatoes: By Wally Richards Every year we dream of picking fresh ripe tomatoes before Christmas and to have lots of this wonderful crop to eat, preserve and give away.

We are spoilt for types to grow; if you care to check out seed catalogs from Egmont and Kings Seeds.

Most people have their favorite ones which they grow every season and may add to this a new one for variety. So we can grow red ones, yellow ones, black ones and even green ones when ripe.

In the last few seasons for some gardeners the poor results have been the ‘New Normal’ which is caused by the pest insect ‘The Psyllid’ This miniature beastie harbors over in the winter and as the temperatures rise up will start emerging and laying eggs to cause you lots of headaches.

The more that survived the winter the worse it will be for you this season as your plants will likely die later in the season in front of your eyes.

There is two true aspects; if you had psyllids last season they are going to be 10 times worse this season.

If you did not have psyllid problems last season there is every chance you will have this season.

Neem Oil, Neem Power, chemical insecticide sprays will help with low populations in the beginning of the season but even if you spray 2 or 3 times a week they will beat you.

One female lays 500 eggs and given reasonable conditions those 500 can be 250,000 in 6 to 8 weeks.

Nymphs and adults secrete psyllid sugars while feeding. A small number of them can produce a large amount of psyllid sugars.

Psyllid sugars can be an obvious sign of infestation, and may occur well before any symptoms can be seen.

First symptoms of an infection

by Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum are yellowing of the edges of young leaves together with an upward cupping of the leaves which becomes more obvious with time.

stem elongation may be reduced, and plant growth stunted.

In New Zealand’s spring numbers on infested plants will begin to build up and reach a peak in late summer/ early autumn.

Adult psyllids have wings and in New Zealand, dispersal tends to be limited, 100 m or more in three days. They will invade new areas and plants, especially in summer.

When dispersing they will often land on non-host plants.

So what can you do to have great tomatoes, potatoes, tamarillos, capsicum, kumera and okra again?

Council adopts Aho Tini 2030 – Arts, Culture and Creativity Strategy Wellington City Council has today unanimously adopted Aho Tini 2030 – Arts, Culture and Creativity Strategy, designed to further support the arts and the artists in the Capital.

The strategy focuses on access and inclusion, higher visibility of Ng Toi M ori, and the success of the city’s artists and arts organisations, and includes a key theme of activating the city’s places and spaces.

The strategy was a genuine co-creation between the Council, community and the arts and creative sector, including extensive engagement with specific groups such as independent and indigenous arts communities and artists experiencing barriers to participation.

Mayor Andy Foster says Wellingtonians are passionate and very supportive of the arts, culture, and creativity, and the city attracts thinkers, creators and innovators because of that.

“In this year’s Residents Monitoring Survey, 86% of Wellingtonians agreed that the city has a culturally rich and diverse arts scene, and the same number was also satisfied with Council delivered arts and cultural events.

“But this bold new strategy will lead Wellington through the next ten years of innovation and creation in our city. It’s one of a number of plans and strategies which will help us to deliver on our 2040 vision for the city.”

Aho Tini means weaving the many threads that bind us together within our culture and community.

“Wellington’s creative heart and identity has become the city’s beating pulse; that’s why this strategy will add such value to us all,” says Councillor Nicola Young.

“Aho Tini provides direction for the Council and council-controlled organisations (CCOs) in partnership

with mana whenua, in supporting and investing in our city’s creative future.

“All Council arts and cultural activities will be aligned to Aho Tini 2030, including programmes, projects, funding and policies.

The action plan includes increased grants allocations, subsidies and better access to venues, and more opportunities for the arts world to participate in making decisions.”

Aho Tini is the first arts and creative sector strategy since 2011 and has been widely welcomed by the sector with over 90 percent support after a year of consultation.

Kahukura CEO / Artistic Director T nemahuta Gray says there have been huge jumps in development within the M ri arts sector in the past six years, but welcomes the strategy as there’s still a need for ongoing support and resources to keep this momentum going.

“We risk losing artists due to the high costs of living in Wellington,

and we don’t want to lose this grassroots base of our community.

But with an average income of only $13,000 per year for artists, we want to keep supporting the M ori and independent sector through these challenging COVID-19 times.”

Foster, NZRU feel the public pressure So it is Ian Foster to the end of the next Rugby World Cup. A logical yet uninspiring move when it comes to the All Blacks coaching role.

The knowledgeable rugby folk outside of Hamilton likely will not be thrilled by the reappointment but it was always going to happen once Foster’s team retained the Bledisloe Cup for another year.

Foster and the NZRU have a few public relations issues on their hands.

Can Foster get the public on his side? Only convincing wins will do that and that simply has not happened yet.

He does not have the player depth of the previous 10 years, that cannot be denied but wins are all fans care about in this country.

The NZRU continue to shoot themselves in the foot.

The latest effort came when they hosted back-to-back games at Auckland’s Eden Park pre-lockdown 2.0.

The second of those games saw the stadium only half full.

Prices for tickets have never been higher, many tickets priced between $80 and $200 which is a lot for one

game yet alone two games in as many weeks.

The move to play both games in Auckland has left a taste of arrogance in the mouths of many fans with quite a few happy to see fellow fans vote with their wallets and not go to game two.

A divided New Zealand rugby public usually does not end well for the head coach.

Surely Foster feels the pressure from the disenchanted rugby public who feel their voices are either not being heard or simply dismissed altogether at this point.

As rough as it sounds, the only way this Foster/Cane era will ever be considered a success, is if the All Blacks win a World Cup in 2023.

That seems a long way away at the moment.

It’s sound advice for surviving the boredom of lockdown and prior to Level 4 fueled a killer instinct in front of goal.

In 2021 the Onslow College First XI football striker, is the leading goal scorer in all premier competitions with 11 goals.

Should the season resume, Onslow only needs a draw against second-placed Wellington Girls’ to guarantee their place in the final.

“I love being a part of the first division and helping my team to play good football,” Ingham said.

“We are strong all-round. Our defensive third is really solid and

with Nicola Ross and Pepi Oliver Bell attacking we have a strong link when pushing forward.”

The searing pace of Ross combined with the vision and creativity of Oliver Bell has helped Onslow score 25 goals in nine games this season. Ingham is responsible for nearly half of them.

“My favorite goals would have to be the two I scored against Wellington East. We were down 1-0 and I scored outside the 18yard box to level the scores. It was a really tight game and in injury time we won a free kick and the cross landed in the middle of the box. I ran and headed it with the last play of the game. We won 2-1 which was really awesome.”

She netted four goals against Paraparaumu College a feat not bettered by any player this season.

academy Her goal scoring prowess hasn’t gone unrecognised. She is in the Wellington Phoenix Academy training with boys and in October last year and April and July this year was a part of the New Zealand Under-17 training squad.

“It was really cool to be invited to those camps. I learned heaps and want to take football as far as I can,” Ingham said.

The Phoenix have been pushing hard for inclusion in the Australia women’s league with a development side seen as key in securing a license.

Ingham plays for Lower Hutt who are affiliated with the Phoenix, developing youth talent.

She previously played for North Wellington FC whose seniors evidently won the Capital Premiership in July.

Onslow College striker Olivia Ingham has been in top form in front of goal this season.

Kiwi Athletic Club approached 95th birthday

Kiwi Athletic Club’s top masters athlete Petra Stoveken. The club celebrates its 95th birthday next month.

The Kiwi Athletic Club is nearing a grand old birthday.

The club, now one of the oldest in the Athletic Wellington Centre, started on October 13 1926 at the old YMCA Building in Willis St. It has gone through wars, an economic depression, and a number of other world setbacks including this Covid-19 pandemic but has survived as a strong competitive summer Athletic Club.

From the beginning, many of the club’s members came from the northern and western suburbs of this city.

Notable members and administrators include Geoff and Marion Jackman, Dr Blair Leslie, Dr Vaughan Poutawera, Sandra Owens, Niki Hercus and now top ranked masters athletes Petra Stoevenken.

One of the club’s top ranked women was Judy Wilkins, a New Zealand representative in 1968 and winner of many titles, who came from Karori as was Paddy Sheerin, Andy and Doug Braddock, Peter Chapman and in recent seasons, javelin throwers Cam and Tim Robinson.

A top national ranked thrower Dick Harris was the winner of New Zealand discus title in 1960 and he won many titles, open and masters, as did Jack Lang.

Alan Singer, Karen Barbara, Bert Witt, Kelly Bates, Kevin Campbell also made meaningful contributions.

The Johnsonville suburb saw the likes of top thrower and administrator, Bryan Mahony, his brother Pat, Dr Paul Young and Don McGaughran.

Khandallah has seen current active Club Captain, Graham McPhail and son Jack and current Sports Wellington Disabled Sportsperson winner, Corran Hanning, and females Stephanie Jones and Lisa Graham are all from the suburb.

An Inter Club competition was started in 1945 between Kiwi AAC and Karori AAC for The Challenge Cup, and from 1950 a Synnott Cup for women.

They were on a home and away pre-Christmas basis till 1959.

The club is proud that 13 of its members have royal honours with Geoff Jackman (OBE), Marion

Jackman (MBE), Bryan Mahony (OBE) and David Synnott (ONZM) from the Northern and Western regions.

Two of it’s NZ representatives in June Schoch (1950) and Bevan Smith (!974) won silver and bronze medal respectively at the Empire/ Commonwealth Games.

Cam Robinson (Karori) won age grade titles in both Oceania and nationally in the javelin event.

The club still holds 48 Wellington centre Records from M15 to M70.

Wellington College has also produced a number of quality members including Howard Yip, Barren Blaylock, Rupert Lambert and both Tristan Meo and Andrew Wells.

In recent seasons Dylan Hoare, Harry Sellwood, Xander Manktelow, Finley Tohill and the last two successful McEvedy Shield captains in Liam Webb and Harley Patel-Muxlow.
